To give some back ground, this is the 3rd gym I've attended and signed up for. (My first one has officially closed and the second one is too far away from my new house!) I was so nervous about finding a new gym, that it took me months to even set foot in this one, despite the fact it was close to work. Finally I gave it a shot. I originally started attending classes as part of the "nutrition challenge" last year. I only attended the specialty classes (yoga, gymnastics, barbells, redline) which definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. The nutrition aspect, the working with a team part, and the trying new types of classes was AMAZING! I knew I wanted to sign up for this gym by the time the challenge was over. My nerves about not fitting in or inadequacy went FLYING out the window after my first couple of classes. The diversity of coaches, people, and personalities makes this a great place to work out. It's this diversity helps everyone feel welcome and "trusting" to start their fitness routine. Whether your new and scaling your workouts, or advanced and pushing to the next level- this could be a great place for you. (If you're overly competitive and have a crappy attitude, this isn't the place for you!) Dead Red has a "team" feel and I appreciate how welcoming the coaches have been. The people here are personable and understand that life can be overwhelming, stressful, and downright hard. First visit Greg asked me about my fitness goals and I said "I want to save my knees and my hips" Too many people 10 or more years older than me have had them replaced. My work takes me on roofs and gives my knees all sorts of abuse. Greg designed a workout unlike any I've had before, and within the first two weeks my knees hurt less. Now they feel better than they have in years. I know the stronger muscles around the knees are making a difference. On top of all that the REAL nutrition counseling, no shame, great atmosphere, etc make Fitness Institute a perfect fit for me and people like me.

Long post alert! This is a note for folks of all ages,…read moreshapes, and fitness levels: So. I was the person who talked to countless gyms after my own gym closed without notice (Burst! Fitness). Prior to Burst! I was kind of a gym drifter. EOS, LA Fit, Planet Fit, Crunch Fit. I tried them all on for size. Didn't like them (nothing wrong with them, just didn't quite meet my needs). The search continued. I started deep-diving on the internet. There had to be an existing place out there that fit my needs right?? Over several months and consultations with private gyms in Tempe, Phoenix, and Scottsdale- Underground Fitness showed up on my radar. Leading up to my initial meeting with them, I was pretty deflated. Perfection is subjective- and I'd been looking for my version of a perfect fit for months and hadn't even come close. If I was going to join a gym at this point, I needed some convincing. But not in the typical gym-salesman pitch way. I needed to be bought-in. I needed to see the passion. The knowledge, the dedication, the practicing-what-you-preach. The ability to teach. I don't know maybe I'm a tough sell with unrealistic expectations *shrugs* My meeting went well. Ron was patient. I asked so many questions I made my own self tired. He didn't get tired. All of my reservations were addressed. I was satisfied. By the end of the meeting I could tell, this guy could seriously talk about this stuff all day. Passion: check. The program I selected felt like it would work with my schedule, the price was comfortable, and so far the customer service was on point. Ok...ok...willing to give these guys a chance. What's 9 weeks, am I right? That was in September 2019. It is now February 2020, 5 months later- I'm fully bought in. It did take some time to realize that this was the place for me, so I encourage readers of this review to keep that in mind. From my very beginning the team at Underground Fitness was communicative, invested in my success, flexible, creative, and believed in me more than I did. For those who I've worked with: Ron never blinked an eye when I needed to talk to him about absolutely anything at all (literally anything). Camille comes to my aide with worksheets, resources and meal ideas as I struggle with meeting my macros. She checks in on my off days, finger always on the pulse. She gently pushes me when I'm being a huge baby. She throws fun creative workouts our way, during which I can be observed smiling from ear to ear. They are so fun! The hour is over before I even know it! Daniel challenges every inch of air available in my lungs with creative circuits, helping me learn to use my body as an extension of myself. Teaching me how to stay grounded in my workouts (I can be super ADD). Each of them keeping a critical eye on form and technique. They are patient when I am low energy and have a sad workout. They are excited for me when I make progress. Even though these team members have spent years learning the fitness do's and don'ts for themselves, I never feel anything but encouraged when demonstrating my own lack of knowledge in nutrition and physiology. I can't tell you how many times I got talked off of the cliffs I put myself on. Active listening here folks! Although a friend brought me here by telling me about their awesome free Saturday boot camps she's…read morebeen attending, as I was signing up for today's class, one of their flyers captured my attention. It asked "Are you bored of your regular workout routine?" and then I don't know what the rest said, because I was already thinking, "Heck yeah! I always do get bored easily!" After today's boxing boot camp with Alex, they definitely "walk the walk" when making fitness challenging yet fun. The energy level of the trainers here is incredible. The theme is, "Never give up." Today was just a taste of what their boxing classes are actually like. We did boxing drills, but the true working out with boxing gloves and contact occur on Thursday evenings, but even though this class was just a "sample," it definitely kicked everyone's derriere. There were grimaces, sweat flying everywhere, groans, and then also laughter. Not the typical combination you would get when you're working out hard. That's what makes this place unique. You can tell they are striving for a fun, yet motivational atmosphere. I know you may not feel that way when doing plank jumping jacks or boxing squats, but you'll feel amazing at the end. If I didn't live a light year away in the west valley, I would be here on a daily basis if I could! But when I'm in the area, I will definitely return and get some pointers about how to improve my fitness routine. There's always room for improvement, and the staff here loves to show you how (after all, that's what they're "trained" for)!!!
