Long post alert! This is a note for folks of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels: So. I was the person who talked to countless gyms after my own gym closed without notice (Burst! Fitness). Prior to Burst! I was kind of a gym drifter. EOS, LA Fit, Planet Fit, Crunch Fit. I tried them all on for size. Didn't like them (nothing wrong with them, just didn't quite meet my needs). The search continued. I started deep-diving on the internet. There had to be an existing place out there that fit my needs right?? Over several months and consultations with private gyms in Tempe, Phoenix, and Scottsdale- Underground Fitness showed up on my radar. Leading up to my initial meeting with them, I was pretty deflated. Perfection is subjective- and I'd been looking for my version of a perfect fit for months and hadn't even come close. If I was going to join a gym at this point, I needed some convincing. But not in the typical gym-salesman pitch way. I needed to be bought-in. I needed to see the passion. The knowledge, the dedication, the practicing-what-you-preach. The ability to teach. I don't know maybe I'm a tough sell with unrealistic expectations *shrugs* My meeting went well. Ron was patient. I asked so many questions I made my own self tired. He didn't get tired. All of my reservations were addressed. I was satisfied. By the end of the meeting I could tell, this guy could seriously talk about this stuff all day. Passion: check. The program I selected felt like it would work with my schedule, the price was comfortable, and so far the customer service was on point. Ok...ok...willing to give these guys a chance. What's 9 weeks, am I right? That was in September 2019. It is now February 2020, 5 months later- I'm fully bought in. It did take some time to realize that this was the place for me, so I encourage readers of this review to keep that in mind. From my very beginning the team at Underground Fitness was communicative, invested in my success, flexible, creative, and believed in me more than I did. For those who I've worked with: Ron never blinked an eye when I needed to talk to him about absolutely anything at all (literally anything). Camille comes to my aide with worksheets, resources and meal ideas as I struggle with meeting my macros. She checks in on my off days, finger always on the pulse. She gently pushes me when I'm being a huge baby. She throws fun creative workouts our way, during which I can be observed smiling from ear to ear. They are so fun! The hour is over before I even know it! Daniel challenges every inch of air available in my lungs with creative circuits, helping me learn to use my body as an extension of myself. Teaching me how to stay grounded in my workouts (I can be super ADD). Each of them keeping a critical eye on form and technique. They are patient when I am low energy and have a sad workout. They are excited for me when I make progress. Even though these team members have spent years learning the fitness do's and don'ts for themselves, I never feel anything but encouraged when demonstrating my own lack of knowledge in nutrition and physiology. I can't tell you how many times I got talked off of the cliffs I put myself on. Active listening here folks! Guys, I didn't know what a fitness partnership looked or felt like until I met the U-fit team. You just have to let them be part of your journey, you won't regret it! The End read more

I have had the pleasure of being trained by Roxanne who challenged me, motivated me and really helped me transition back into the gym after a couple year hiatus due to me becoming a mom. She is very knowledgeable and also considered and modified movements for my knee issues in each workout. In just a month, Ive felt my body making huge improvements and feel better every day. I was interested in their 63 day challenge, but I needed to know the price. They wanted me to come in for a consult, but if I couldn't afford the price, it would just waste their time and mine. I asked for just a ballpark figure, just something to go on to make sure I could afford it. But, no dice. Apparently this information is not known by those who communicate with you. All communication was done by text; I'd rather speak to someone instead of texting. So, hence the 2 Star review. Just give me a price!!!! I used to be a member here, and my coach was really good. I quit going at the start of the pandemic and worked out at home. I wanted to sign back up but the owner was super weird and creepy when my husband and I visited, and tried to to shame me for not writing a five-paragraph essay in this very strange intake form explaining the reasons for my goals that he'd sent a few hours before the appointment. The owner also kept telling me I didn't show up when I was a past member (untrue, and I have all the stats in my fitness app to prove it) and seemed to be giving an elaborate spiel because (we guess) they raised their prices even higher and had to find a way to justify it. (We don't know for sure if it was due to a price raise because we left before we got the sales pitch, since were so weirded out by the vibes and pressure and weirdness that we left shortly after the owner told me I "wasn't ready" to join the gym I'd already been a member of and asked my husband if he wanted to join). For the past year I've been driving by this gym multiple times a week on the way to my NEW gym and am really glad I dodged the bullet. The description of how the program had changed definitely raised both of our hackles and seemed more cult-like than just a place to go and get a good workout in, which explains why they try to break down people wanting to sign up and berate them over not filling out a form the way they want. read more

I've been going to train at underground for 8 months now and the results I've gotten are nothing short of incredible. If you are ready to put in the work they will help you change your life. I train with Aaron and I can honestly say he cares about his people and goes out of his way to make sure they are taken care of properly. 4 star rating due to cost of personal training(65-85$). Even with a package deal the price is still too steep. I have a friend that trains there and said price depends on who you talk to. The trainer Vickie deserves 5stars. She put me through a workout that addressed my needs and it flat out kicked my butt. Again if it wasn't for cost and distance to gym I would totally be there. The gym itself is really small. I was there at 5am when few people are there, not sure sure what 6-8am or rush hour times would be like there. Check it out. Where do I start! Before Underground Fitness I was in a very unstructured place with my health and fitness. I thought I had the right idea and was on the right path BUT none of my efforts were breeding any results. Just maintaining! I knew I needed something and a regular gym was not going to cut it with my health/fitness ignorance and misconceptions. I joined Underground Fitness in the beginning of October 2020 to lose weight and get toned again. My trainer has been Kelsey and Ron has provided me with weekly nutritional guidance. I started the program at 221 pounds. After two months of working with them, I'm done to 201 pounds. The exercises are challenging, but not overwhelming. Kelsey has done a fantastic job of constantly changing my exercise routine; I new do the same sets of exercises day-to-day. I'm amazed how fast my one hour sessions go. Kelsey keeps me engaged during it session that, before I know it, the hour is up. Ron has done a remarkable job of guiding my nutritional habits. I've been so pleased with them that I signed up for another two months to keep my momentum going. When I first started, Ron spent a good hour with me discussing my fitness goals, medical history, and past workout history. From there he was able to extrapolate a general outline that Kelsey has used to create my daily workout routines. As they're told me, it took a long time to gain the weight, and so it takes time to lose the weight. I've pretty much averaged loosing two to three pounds each week. I have been working with the team at Underground since November 2017 and from the first consultation, with Scott, I knew Underground was going to be different than any other gym I have been to. A lot of gyms make the claim of offering the true support, nutrition and mentoring, that is needed to reach your goals but they all have come up short for me. 5 months, with this awesome team, and I have lost 12 lbs, 5 percent body fat, and several inches. They have helped me truly understand how to fuel my body to get the best results. I could not be happier! Now to the best trainer there is...Camille. All the trainers here are great but Camille is just amazing. She has taken the time to really understand my goals and push me to reach them. She doesn't take it easy on me and I love that. I train with her a couple of times a week and then she has a really great booty kicking boot camp on Saturdays. Aside from the great training she's also just a really great person. She's got such a great heart and she cares about all of her clients. It's not uncommon for me to get texts from her in the middle of the day telling me she is proud of me or sending me information about how to better hit my macros. This place is super clean. The trainers are all great and nice not just the one I've worked with but the others I've had interactions with as well. They care about you they want the best for your body and health and do what they can to make it happen. I'm still in the process of my first contract about nine weeks I think I've lost about six or 7 pounds but I feel super strong and healthy and look forward to see what the next four weeks bring. read more

Update as of March 2018: very sad that I have to leave this gym since I'm moving to another state otherwise I would be a customer for life. I've been training with Camille three days a week over the last 6 months and the results have been amazing. Her Saturday high energy circuit boot camp is just the icing on the cake. Thank you Camille and Underground Fitness! If you're looking for a great Personal Training gym in the valley then look no further. After years of back pain it's taken only three months to be almost 100% pain free. I've been working with Scott and LJ and both are excellent trainers. If you want trainers that not only care about the work you put in the gym, but the fuel you put inside your body outside of the gym, this is your place. I've done "big box" gyms, who only care about the bottom line. I've done mass bootcamps, 30+ people and 1 trainer which do not provide 1:1 attention. This place doesn't up-sell you, there is no crazy add-on; it provides 1:1, small group classes, and mini-bootcamps. The best part is that the owners have hired trainers that actually care about your progress and your fitness goals. I train with LJ and Camille and they are absolutely amazing! LJ makes my workouts fun (on no conditions have I ever thought working out was "fun") but they are with him! He encourages me with each week that I progress to push myself to do even better than last week. Camille is the kindest, sweetest, most motivational trainer I have ever met. She truly listens to you, and customizes the workouts to meet your needs. You know sometimes when something seems impossible? And you trap yourself inside your own head, thinking you can't do it? Camille pulls you out of that dark place, and helps you understand what your body is capable of. She has gotten me started on a whole new way of looking at my nutrition, and understanding that you truly can't "out exercise a bad diet!" On Saturdays she offers a bootcamp, which is always new, fun, and an insanely intense circuit. The small environment allows you to get to know the "regulars" who are all very kind and encouraging. There isn't the random "bro" in the corner throwing his weights on the ground, screaming for all to hear, like you see in the big places. Rather, everyone is working on their own stations, pushing their own limits, and encouraging one another when something gets tough. Underground Fitness has now served as the jump off for two different fitness transformations for me. The first was a successful attempt to get leaner after a knee surgery. My husband and I have been training with trainer Miles and we both agree that he is definitely the best trainer we've been with and we've both, together and separate, been with many trainers. He combines cardio with strength and works all your muscles! He really pays attention to the both of us while we work out so we get the optimal benefits from every move and watches to make sure we are lifting correctly. He is always asking for feed back to ensure we've are getting what we want from each workout. We are so impressed by the cleanliness of the gym and the overall atmosphere. I found this place by chance on the internet and I gave it a try. The first thing that's cool about it is that it's not a traditional gym. It's only trainers and trainees working. It's also a very social environment where people talk to each other while working hard. When you sign up, they ask you a bunch of questions and then they pair you up with a trainer than is suited towards your fitness goals and schedule. The first session has you do some exercises to gauge your strength and flexibility and the trainer spend some time probing deeper into your specific objectives in between sets. Subsequent sessions are built on the progress of the previous sessions. Very close attention is spent to proper form so that you don't hurt yourself. The exercises change every session so that it keeps it interesting and so that the supporting muscles around the primary muscles get well developed. I also learn a ton about fitness and strength training. I am taught exactly how to do something and why I'm doing it. I started noticing improvements in my strength and flexibility in my regular life after a couple weeks. After a couple months my wife was really impressed with the improvements in my physique and I feel a lot straighter, broader, and balanced. For me it was the perfect match up for what I wanted and I look forward to going to my sessions. I see it as a worthwhile investment in my future to be able to stay strong and mobile as I get older. After several years attending, I can give an updated review and before I start I should describe my relationship with the gym itself. I got to know Scott Carpenter just as the gym was going though a transition of management back in 2012. I have gotten to know a variety of trainers very well and made life long friends here. With it came the opportunity to work with awesome trainers through out the years, each with their own uniqueness and their own style of coaching. I particularly grew fond of Ron Edwards training style. He brings a certain creative element to each workout and workout combinations. A more unorthodox approach to training that manifests the "underground" element to the session at the same time keeping the workouts fun and spontaneous. Underground fitness has become a significant part of my life and wether you are a beginner or an advance athlete the trainers here will work with your own pace and schedule. I particularly joined the self-defense class directed by Scott Carpenter, I was an experienced boxer in my youth and I can honestly say this is definitely worth the try. You can get a great work out with the hand to hand combat as well as an adrenaline rush with real life scenario sparring. I had a great experience at underground fitness. It is not a typical big box gym, or a personal trainer where you feel intimidated every time you go to work out. Everyone who is there wants to work hard and still have fun. Personally, I enjoy group fitness classes that still have one on one attention. The early morning bootcamp classes at underground are exactly that. They are also very challenging. I got a great workout and even learned new exercises that challenged me. I joined Underground Fitness a couple of years ago with the hopes of getting back into shape after years of not working out. The trainers recognized that I needed to start slow to rebuild the muscle that I had lost. Additionally, they were very diligent to teach proper form in an effort to reduce injury. Love this gym! The gym is smaller than the large corporate gyms I have been to in the past, which is a nice feeling. Clean and everyone is friendly. Ron the owner was super responsive when I inquired and spent a good hour with me at my initial consultation to understand my goals. I was seeking some 1:1 training after the pandemic. I've been working with trainer Roxanne Forbes for 6 weeks and she has been so great to work with. She is knowledgeable, friendly, and pushes me when she knows I need it. She is so encouraging and has helped me enjoy lifting and being in the gym again after a few years away. I have an injury that is aware of and is cognizant of when designing my workouts. Highly recommend! I also wanted to re-evaluate my nutrition so started with registered dietician Christina Kroog. I have tried most fads and trends when it has come to eating, and as a I've gotten older just become completely confused by what was going to be best for me nutritionally and serve my goals. I have several health issues and have struggled with doctors being able to address my concerns as a whole. Christina is the first person to look at me as a WHOLE PERSON and understand how she could coach me, but within the realistic demands of my busy working mom life. The struggle is real, but she gets it, and made this so simple for me without daunting dietary restrictions. We check in weekly and I enjoy her feedback, encouragement, and our morning chat! I should have hired a dietician years ago and am recommending this move to any of my friends on the nutrition struggle bus now. It doesn't have to be hard. When I first started looking for a place to workout I came across underground fitness. I definitely was struggling with body issues, mentally and physically. I have tried commercial gyms and to me they are very intimidating. So when I found this place, I was very excited to see what it was about. This place definitely gives you step by step on what to do. These guys are the best!!! I started training here with Chris about 2 months ago and couldn't be happier. I recently turned 58 and couldn't get myself to the gym on my own. Always making excuses. Now I have a set apt. 3 days a week and Chris pushes me every session making sure my form is correct on every exercise. I met with Ron initially who evaluated me and chose Chris as my trainer. Now I'm hooked. The whole staff is friendly and know what they're doing. My 17 year old son who's planning on playing baseball in college next year is now training here as well. I don't enjoy exercise in general and found this gem by chance on one of those late night google searches and I'm sooo glad I did! I work at a desk and lived a very sedentary lifestyle so I was just packing on those pounds. However, since I started working out here I've become much more active and feel better. I just wanna say I love this place! I've trained with several of the trainers and they are all fantastic! They really cater to your abilities while pushing you at the same time! They work with you and help you to push yourself further. They have a variety of times and it makes it easy to come in for their group training or boot camp classes or one on one personal training. I've gotten stronger since I started coming here and everyone here is really welcoming and supportive of your fitness goals to help keep you more accountable. I am absolutely impressed with Undergroud Fitness because their commitment to my fitness despite Covid-19 restrictions is unparalleled!! Due to social distancing during this pandemic most gyms had to close their doors and leave their clients hanging, but NOT Undergroud Fitness! I just finished a virtual full body workout with my trainer Camielle from the comfort of my living room. This amazing gym has found a way to still have one-on-one workouts, group workouts, nutritional coaching and much more ALL ONLINE! I truly felt like I was actually in the gym with Camielle. Of course while I can't wait to be able to go back to the brick & mortar gym I am so pleased that Undergroud Fitness has found a way for us to workout with our trainers while under quarantine at home. Would give this place 10 stars if I could! Training at this gym has been a great experience- very educational, motivational, and challenging. The trainers are all amazing: Scott, Ron, Lance, Larone. I have been out of the gym for some time and was nervous to start back again, however, the trainers made it a smooth transition by customizing the diet and workouts to meet my schedule and individual needs so that it was do-able yet challenging and results producing. You can tell the trainers care and love what they do. A lot of their clients have been going for years and consist of all ranges of ages, fitness levels, and abilities which makes it a comfortable and encouraging place to work out. This gym is awesome! I was stuck at a plateau with my weight loss from my diet and going to this gym finally broke the plateau! I am finally putting on some muscle and losing the unnecessary fat. Ron, Jake and Jenni are all really great trainers. Each of them has a personal style with training and really put you through a great workout. I workout here 5 days a week at 5:30am (2 semi-privates and 3 group classes). Always a fun crowd workin' out too. The gym has everything that you need to get a solid workout. Underground Fitness also has multiple locations around the valley which is perfect for finding the gym closest to you. They also do nutrition consultations to make sure you're eating the right things. I really suggest trying this gym out, you really wont be disappointed! read more

I started coming here in May and have absolutely loved it. From the very beginning, Ron worked with me to determine what my fitness goals are and how to work towards achieving them. This included training with Daniel, another trainer at Underground Fitness, as well as a nutrition plan that Ron formulated for me. They're very knowledgeable about health and fitness, and they have been really great at keeping me motivated. I've been really pleased with my results thus far. i.am.SO.excited! FINALLY... a really cool fitness studio that is **also** in my back yard...how cool is that? No really, it's in my back yard (or might as well be) in that it is in my 'hood and within WALKING (or sleepwalking) distance depending upon how early in the day I decide to go. Modern, light, bright and airy (and yes, it even smells good), this fitness studio is filled with brand new, really cool, state of the art equipment and offers a wide variety of programs including personalized fitness trainers and group classes, including yoga (soon), Zumba, Pilates, Bootcamp, Total Body Conditioning and something really cool called TRX Suspension Training (which, I hear, is similar to Pilates, but without the Reformer). Very clean, well organized, bright, airy and CLOSE! My biggest problem in going to the gym has always been *getting there* and now, thanks to Underground Fitness, I no longer have that excuse! And, on top of all that, there are NO monthly membership fees, just a really cool punch card system that provides access to their classes. Our 'hood has a lot of really great things, but we were lacking a fitness facility within walking distance, so Underground Fitness is truly an answer to my prayers! Now, if I can only convince Pita Jungle to open up in that other vacant space, my life will be complete ; - ). read more

I'm a chiropractor with a degree in physiology, and even I struggle with motivating and organizing an effective workout with work, family and life. The trainers at Underground are so personable and not what you think of when you think of your typical trainer. They know and respect your pace, and help you meet your goals. If you're frustrated with your level of fitness and you just aren't getting the results from the gym that you hoped...please, please, please take advantage of their free consultation and make the decision to make every day moving forward a day when you were more fit than the last. read more

I am a former long time client of underground and honestly to say I am dissatisfied is an understatement. In the beginning the gym was great. It was professional, yet welcoming. Everyone was kind, happy and the workouts - especially group classes, were great. In the past couple months there has been some very obvious disturbances amongst the staff/management that has begun to impact the clients. There are inappropriate relations that are clearly happening amongst staff/management and also the clients. When new management took over Underground, they began changing the schedule and weren't nearly as flexible. Now I hear they completely took away group classes... for spending so much time and money in one gym, I am disappointed to watch the gym spiral down. read more
