This is an absolutely delightful tea experience. When you open the door, you come into the display area showing the shop's tea wares - gaiwans, tea cups, tea sets, and tea pots including some lovely Yixing pottery. When you come a little further in, you line up at the counter to order. Staff will let you smell the teas if you're having trouble deciding. After you order, you pick a table. There are tables with a sturdy little kettle built in for folks drinking gongfu style, and a few without for folks who don't need that. It's a lovely, quiet space with a big fish tank. It's worth noting that they want to keep the space quiet and ask people not to bring laptops though it's fine to read quietly on a tablet. Onto the tea. The tea selection here is frankly fantastic. Everything is well-chosen, and I had to remind myself that there isn't going to be a bad choice. I chose a Taiwanese black tea for my first experience here, the sun moon lake, though I will be back to sample their matcha, which they mill in-house. The selection covers white through pu'er and everything in between. I drank gongfu style, so they gave me a little tiny gongfu tray, a gaiwan, and enough tiny cups for everyone at the table. For people who want to try gongfu style but haven't done it before, they are happy to show you. The only downside is that all of their snacks have gluten in them. I'm hoping that this will change going forward, getting GF mochi or even mochi donuts would be perfect. Overall, this is my new favorite spot in the city, and I only wish I'd discovered it sooner. This is such a unique place! They have their own matcha mill and many different types of tea. You can have them prepare it for you or purchase a tin to make it at home yourself. It's very peaceful and relaxing inside. Each table has a kettle of hot water so you can add it to your tea. They don't have any milk or sweeteners to add, but the matcha was really good without it. I love Northeast Tea House. When you walk in, you are greeted by an aquarium, a traditional Chinese tea seating area, a matcha setup, and plenty of seating. One of the coolest parts is that they actually grind their own matcha, which is not something you see very often. There are tons of tea options ranging from black to green to white, and they also serve traditional Chinese tea in a gong fu style. Located in the very walkable part or northeast you can stop in and try a whole host of fresh brewed teas and sip on them for hours at any of their tables each stationed with an electric kettle to keep your tea warm. When a friend told me that the Northeast Tea House in NE Mpls has the "best tea anywhere", I had to try it. It did not disappoint. Located near East Hennepin and University Ave, the Tea House offered sushi bar style seating where you can watch them make your tea, traditional tables or even a Japanese style tea table with comfy floor seating and warmers for your hot water. The service was friendly, patient and instructive, especially for those of us whose only experience with tea comes from a box in the pantry or a 16oz can from Kwik Trip. Go to northeast tea house if you're looking for teas served authentically! Cannot recommend this place enough for not only their top tier matcha (that they mill themselves) but also their ambiance. They highly recommend putting away phones, tablets, and laptops to just enjoy being in the moment. Each table comes with an inset heated kettle, that they preset for you to match whatever tea you order. They give you strict instructions on how to prepare your tea (for example: every consecutive steep, you add another 5 seconds to the steeping time). I love their matcha! I get all my matcha powder from this place because I know it's sustainably sourced and milled fresh. This is a great tea experience for those wanting an authentically prepared drink with a very zen ambiance. For matcha lovers, they mill their matcha in house where you can watch! I can imagine this is any tea lover's dream spot in Minneapolis. The tea and desserts are top notch -- it can be hard to find more authentic Asian foods and drinks but I feel like this place definitely fills that gap. I ordered the iced single house-milled matcha "Samidori" flavor and it was basically what I anticipated: matcha over ice. I usually enjoy a matcha latte with sweetener but I did know what to expect before coming. I wouldn't say my palate is refined enough to be able to discern different matcha flavors so I can't speak too much on that, but the description of the flavor profile was "Apple, rose water, pastry." My friend ordered an iced "Silly Rabbit" (Yunnan Yellow Tea w/ Lychee and Soursop Syrups) and that one was my favorite. It tasted kind of like a peach green tea lemonade from Starbucks, but fresher. We also ordered the chocolate chip banana bread (yum!) and melon and yuzu mochi. I was pleasantly surprised with the mochi. I had never had the yuzu flavor, but it was a citrus-like flavor and I really liked it! The place itself is well decorated and feels like you stepped into a whole different atmosphere than the bustling and busy construction-filled streets outside. They have nice, calming music playing inside as well as a big fish tank with cool fish. It's a very relaxing space to be in. They had a long table with floor cushions for people to sit on and there are tea pots placed on every table there. A lovely and unique tea house for the Twin Cities. Great place to relax and enjoy a conversation. It was busy when we were there and took awhile to get our tea but there was only one worker there (the only reason for my 4 out of 5 stars). However tea is not something to be rushed so go with that in mind and you won't be disappointed. We went with our son and he didn't get too bored thanks to the large fish tank. Update for 2022, we love to stop here monthly for a gong fu tea service and I love seeing how steady their patronage has been. On a weekend we have had to cram into a spot since they've been so full. We have a few gift cards here so we'll continue to stop by but I am eternally sad that they don't have vegan vitals any longer. Their mochi is made with gelatin and none of their baked goods have been dairy free when I ask, I loved their mochi before and I don't believe they always used to make them with gelatin (you can tell because there's marshmallow like filling). Anyway, I hope their snack menu gets a more inclusive update soon since I don't plan on returning after our gift cards run out. I love the small tea samplings you can buy! This was such a cool find and it reminded me exactly of the tea-houses that you find in Asia! Of note, the place is more of a place to have meetings with others and they request that laptops aren't used here (I was originally going to come here earlier in the day to get some work done, but I saw the notice and decided to stop by a bit later). This was my first visit to this place, despite not living all that far from it. As a tea aficionado, I felt silly having not known about it. I had my backpack with me when I entered and was told that they don't allow laptops. I'd read that on the door on my way in. I don't bring my computer with me, so I didn't feel anything about this rule. I did appreciate that they had it, though, because it means that the space would be quiet and full of good energy. I ordered an iced Osmanthus black and went to my table to wait for my friend to arrive. This tea is exactly what tea is supposed to be: Delicious and infusing my cells with a goodness that cannot be found with any other beverage. Tea is a Food of the Gods, as far as I'm concerned. After my friend came in, I got a Silly Rabbit. This, too, was gift to my palate. My friend got a min-tea service of a Pu'er. She loved it, too. The tea and energy of this place is so welcoming and refreshing. I felt energized by the tea, my friend, and the atmosphere of the shop. I will be back. I love that they have a community table and lots of smaller tables to sit at. Each table has its own kettle so you can experience the authentic Gongfu tea service. I had a delicious white tea and tried their house milled matcha. While I'm not really a matcha person, it was surprisingly good. If you like matcha, you HAVE to try their matcha. A true tea lover's spot. I avoided coming here for a long time because I thought it was matcha only, which didn't interest me, but their tea menu is in fact much more extensive. The tea is perfectly steeped and ready to enjoy quickly from the small cups. It has flavor! Discernible fruit or toasted rice or grass or milky notes. Most tea served at coffee shops is scalded, over steeped or too much leaf to water ratio, and therefore bitter or tannic. It's an afterthought to a coffee focused service, which is what makes a tea house like Northeast so special. Another remarkable thing about this business is the focus on enjoying the experience. Patrons are not on their laptops - there is no in house wifi. People are socializing, or reading, or counting how many hermit crabs are in the aquarium.
