The paint makes it look more like art but seriously these two took me 3 hours and I probably got a total of 8 minutes MAYBE.

I took 1, 3 hour class and signed up for it after being recommended by a contact from the northern clay center as a good class for beginners. There were only 8 people in the entire class and me and my two friends arrived five minutes late because of traffic on the way over. We quickly sat down while others had already began their pottery and clearly had worked with the wheel before because they all made atleast 4-5 pieces while my friends and I made 2/3 pieces that I would hardly even call art. It was disappointing because the instructor spent atleast a third of their time cutting clay which obviously could have been done before the class started and because of that I felt as though no one was being helped. For 40 bucks it should have been marketed as an open wheel class, not recommended to people that have never touched the wheel.

The pottery is grouped by artist, which made it easy to limit my browsing to only the styles I liked.

Of course the president was kind enough to give a generous $500 back per semester, as if that's supposed to help over six months of classes. Most of the professors are great, some are only focused on their own tastes when in crit. The classes are long, and there is rarely time to complete any assignments as well as classes. I often found myself dropping classes to offset the workload I was given. Most professors don't care that you have 4 additional 10 hour assignments due as well as writing and research assignments, so it continues to pile on. It feels like a scam. I was so excited to be 19 and applying, but now that I'm older I see the way they take in vulnerable artists for their money promising a distinguished degree. What are they even spending it on? Facilities and amenities (especially housing) are RARELY updated. There are only two buildings, one of which is over 100 years old and has barely been touched. I understand paying faculty, but when you're charging 800+ kids 50,000+ per year... you have to wonder. Printing and parking is not free either, they take every spare penny you have. There is a reason I'm not going back next semester, the stress and pain wasn't worth it, even if I graduated, what could I expect? Assistance getting into the job market after school is non-existent. They kick you in the ass with a good luck out the door. If you're an artist, just begin your own practice. Save yourself some time and money. You don't need a degree to be a real artist. Don't waste your money.

Every time I walk through the door here, I instantly smile. The positive vibes and warm welcoming energy meets you at the door. It is located in the Casket Arts building but has its own entrance on the side. The owner, Sarah, and all of the teachers that lead classes here are very helpful and enthusiastic about seeing and help students succeed. They have multiple ways and ideas to do things. Classes start with a hand out being given and an overview of what to expect. They put you at ease and help troubleshoot issues. I gain more confidence in this craft every time I come here and am more excited and enthusiastic about continuing. If the scheduled classes don't work for you schedule or you have a group of friends with whom you'd like to have a jewelry making party, consider hosting a private class. I've done this and had a ton of fun! After taking classes and learning the basics, come back for open studio hours. I can't say enough about this place! It is an absolute joy to learn and work among the people here.

Wow. I am one lucky girl…read more I've been trying to find a creative endeavor that I enjoy and am half-way decent at (throwing ceramics wasn't it). I've done a bunch of welding and metal work, mostly on a larger scale, but I recall taking a jewelry metal smithing class back in college or high school -- not sure, it all kind of blends together now. But I liked it, and I like the idea that I can make something that I not only enjoy myself, but possibly sell at some point. Anyway, being new-ish in town, I asked around at some jewelry events where I would be able to take classes and everyone I spoke to recommended Quench. I signed up for the Bezel class to get reacquainted with the tools, and was especially excited that we would leave with a piece of jewelry we made! The teacher, Sarah, was fantastic. She demonstrated everything meticulously & expertly, emphasized safety, gave us little tricks to correct mistakes, and was all around just great -- very encouraging & supportive too. The students were too -- really varied, but everyone was supportive and sharing. A great group of ladies. There was a daughter and her mom there, friends together, people just there because they wanted to improve their skills -- women of all ages. I thought the instructor was just a really great teacher and thought that Quench was so fortunate to have someone so good on their teaching team. And the whole studio seems so well-thought out from the layout to the classes and open studios -- I thought it was maybe a large operation that several people had invested their time and money in. After asking some questions, I learned that, Sarah, my humble instructor is THE sole founder of Quench. I am impressed. I've heard the other instructors are good too, but I feel really fortunate that I got to learn from the woman who started the studio and is really a hub for the jewelry arts in the Twin Cities. I can't wait to take more classes and make more jewelry. Check out their website for classes and open bench times. If you're experienced, you can use the studio for $10 an hour on many days.

With over a decade of experience coaching all ages--especially youth--I also served as an assistant coach and videographer at Hive, supporting the school in any way I could. Unfortunately, a recent incident with a confrontational parent, Andrea Deshone, exposed serious gaps in the school's approach to conflict resolution. After a class, Andrea aggressively approached me over a complaint from her daughter, Stella, an instructor at Hive that day. Instead of addressing her concerns professionally, Stella went to her mother, who then confronted me. Despite my calm requests for space, Andrea refused to back away and even stepped closer when I expressed that I felt threatened, effectively cornering me. She got so close that I could feel her breath and spit. Mr. Froeming and another student approached, and I pleaded for help, explaining that I felt attacked and trapped. It can be as frightening for a man to feel threatened by a woman, knowing that defending oneself could have serious consequences. Unfortunately, this nuance was not acknowledged here. A trusted adult student witnessed the exchange, observing that I had simply asked a question of the only instructor in my group. Later, this student confirmed to Mr. Pallesen that I had done nothing wrong. Despite this corroboration and texts supporting my account, Mr. Pallesen never acknowledged this and chose not to address the issue. Initially, he agreed to mediate, but after I submitted a personal account explaining the incident's impact on my CPTSD--which affected me severely for two weeks and still affects me--he declined to read it and suggested I pretend the incident hadn't happened. When I asked if he would take the situation seriously if the genders were reversed, he confirmed that he would, highlighting an inconsistency. In our exchanges, Mr. Pallesen shared his own experience with Andrea, recounting how her family aggressively confronted him in 2017 about his treatment of children, saying, "What the f--k happened? Why are you treating the kids like this?" According to him, this intervention forced him to self-reflect, helping him save his business. He also explained that Andrea's family threatened him with a bad review, which he acknowledged could have impacted his business. This may explain his reluctance to address my situation directly, but I genuinely hope he learns from this experience as he did with his previous encounter so he can grow as both an instructor and a leader. This experience reflects broader concerns about leadership and standards at Hive. During one leadership lecture, Mr. Pallesen stated that "both political parties are basically the same," a comment that bothered one student, Beth, so much that she responded, "That is the definition of white privilege," highlighting a lack of sensitivity in a group that includes people of color and people of the LGBTQ+ community. While Mr. Froeming and most of the community were wonderful, the lack of professional support from leadership ultimately left my daughter and me feeling disconnected from a place we once considered family. I share this review in the hope that Hive Martial Arts can reflect and grow, strengthening its community for all.
