A very refreshing drink, and I got an Asiago cheese bagel with veggie cream cheese. It sounds plain, but it wasn't. And my daughter got a chocolate chip muffin. Beautiful little spot in a tiny, yet fantastic downtown. It brings some character. Service was fast and this place is so inviting and cozy. The coffee is actually strong and very flavorful. So cozy and cute! It's a small coffee shop next to the Utica Police station. It's a great place to study, have a coffee date, or quickly grab some food and drinks. I usually get an Iced caramel latte with oak milk! They have one of the best coffee, it strong and smooth. The baristas are always friendly and helpful if you have questions! I wandered into the gem with my partner the day after Thanksgiving and was greeted by the cutest, sweetest barista in a pink hat. She was already tending to other customers, but she was quick to let us know she saw us and was back in a flash to help us out. She took the time to help me figure out how I could sweeten my drink a tad more, but not kill the healthy - which I greatly appreciated! I ordered the ChagaMatcha and it was DEEEEEEELICIOUS! My partner ordered a drink they had run out of a few ingredients for, but she promised they would be back within a few days time and her friendly demeanor and kind smile just made ya' nod your head and say, "we'll be back!" The cafe itself is cute and cozy. They had chess, checkers, and a cozy couch for snuggling on. We didn't get anything to munch on this trip, but everything smelled delicious. The prices are reasonable and the selection is perfect for light bites and drinks for both plant based and omnivores. The gentleman at the counter was super nice and helpful. This morning, my hubby was craving the Lox Bagel, so we made a trip back to Nothern Grind. It was a completely different experience from our first time, and while our first time wasn't terrible, this visit blew us out of the water. The manager was extremely friendly and welcoming. Took our orders and even made some suggestions along the way. I was apprehensive to try another iced coffee, but I figured WTH. My Iced Filthy Chai Tea Latte was exactly everything I never knew I needed. My husband tried another smoothie (Peach), and he said he couldn't drink it fast enough. She was even kind enough to give me a sample of the Chaga Matcha (with lavender & honey) OMG now I HAVE to go back..if only for that drink. It was a great way to start our rainy Sunday morning. I was pretty excited to try this place since it is so close and brining more business to downtown Utica. I don't like coffee but this is what my husband had to say about it: "it's a bakery that sells coffee". He was not impressed with the coffee (he is a "coffee snob" as I call it but he roasts at a local roastery). He says Michigan has tons of great roasteries and they should have chosen a different one. He also commented on the lack of pour over style coffees. I got the raspberry iced tea, which was very sweet. He enjoyed his cookie and it was very moist. My muffin was a little dry and tasted "day old". Overall I hope they succeed and we will likely be back to try the other desserts and ice cream. read more

Downtown Utica finally got what it has been missing for so long: a coffee shop. This small strip of Utica has had a plethora of bars and hair/nail salons...but never a coffee shop (at least while I've lived around there). I was very pleased to see that someone wanted to fill my veins with caffeine...and it wasn't Starbuck's. When I walked into this little place the first time, I got that quaint small town feel. I've been to several small coffee shops up north and I feel like the owners of Northern Grind really captured that feel. The coffee menu isn't extensive, but I feel like there's a little something for everyone. Northern Grind also has a cold brew option for those who are trendy (much unlike myself). Me? I like a nice vanilla latte. The Northern Grind vanilla latte is quite tasty. I personally don't have any qualms with regard to the roasted bean quality. In my most humblest of opinions, this latte is good. Don't take my word for it, hop on in and try one for yourself. The Northern Grind beverage of choice is called the Yooper Doodle. This concoction is a mix of caramel, vanilla and cinnamon. They even top it with whipped cream. My wife enjoys this luxurious libation whenever she can. The interior of this joint is clean and cozy. There is more comfy seating toward the back...which is a nice little spot to have a short meeting with collogues from work. All in all, I love this place. The staff is super friendly, the environment is welcoming and cozy and there are tons of options on the menu. I didn't even mention the scrumptious scones and incredible cookies. They also added a breakfast and lunch menu! If you're in the mood for some delicious coffee and you find yourself in the downtown Utica area, the Northern Grind folks would be really happy to have you. Best part about this coffee shop is you can order a regular coffee if you want one. No latte required! The berry scones are excellent also.
