I absolutely hate the dentist. I hate to admit that I had to get a bit of work done on my tooth. However, the staff dealt with my extreme fear by continuously calming me down and using laughing gas (my first time ever, and the only way I will continue to get work done) to make it enjoyable. I have now referred several friends to them. Although it can be hard to watch tv while getting work done, it is enough distraction to make the time fly by. After years using this dentist for many years we are pulling our business and moving to another. Her rates are very expensive and excessive as well recently going to another dentist for an examination I found out what more modern dentist do and provide in detail vs. the ho hum services we had been receiving and didn't know better. I actually got to see each tooth in detail on a computer screen in front of me and a explanation vs. the non consultative service we had been receiving. Also found out the cavities they said I needed filling the other dentist said it was some build up in the tooth and just did a cleaning with the camera in my mouth I got to see it before and after...wow. That alone saved me about $400.00. Dont get me wrong, very nice, all smiles at this place but they charge like attorneys I would look at others before using them. read more

After years of bouncing around to different dentists, I've finally found an office (and a dentist!) that I really love going to! Dr Karla Aylen is caring and has a great manner with patients. She explains everything to you in terms you can understand. Her staff is fantastic too! Tammy, the hygienist, is quick, efficient, thorough and gentle. She's also great to "talk" to while I'm lying in the chair - those cleaning sessions fly by in such a comfortable atmosphere. Office building on the outside reminded me of dentist building I use to go to as a kid... not a good experience so a little nervous since I had to change dentist for insurance reasons. Inside was clean and modern with TVs in every room and they used the same TV for my digital xrays. Little more current than my last dentist. The hygenist was friendly and did explain everything to me which was nice but I don't know if she really cleanned them as well as others? I guess because I didn't leave with a sore mouth? Dr Karla Aylen was friendly but I didn't really talk to her very long. She pointed out that I need a filling replaced and a new crown. I'm not thrilled about it because of the cost but also because of my last crown experience. She did shave down my last crown that I got in December (from previous dentist) which did make it fit better in my mouth. Reception was friendly but I do wonder why the cost was $200 more than the other dentist in December? I'm supposed to be covered by insurance, in network so don't understand the cost. The previous dentist not in network but also did a crown and filling.... Getting a crown next week so we will see how this one goes. read more

I had to go to an emergency dental clinic over the weekend, the work they said I needed done was quite extensive so I called Northgate Smiles with the quotes. They got me in right away to get my abscess taken care of and gave me the root canal I needed. I had a very visible cavity but they decided to just focus on the cavity, however, 10 days later my cavity started to hurt so they squeezed me in and did a filling. The staff and dentists here have been so great, I appreciate that I don't feel judged here. I tend to have a great deal of anxiety about going to the dentist because of the shame I feel for the condition my teeth are in. read more

My visit to this office was even better than I was prepared for after finding them on Yelp, and checking out the website. I'm a sucker for beautifully designed things/spaces, as well as the red-carpet treatment and customer service. This place has all of this in spades. I knew I was in for a pretty unpleasant diagnosis (wisdom teeth need to come out, gnarly root canal needs done) so I was already shaking in my boots. But when I was escorted to the exam chair by Angela, I knew I was going to be OK. She took amazing care of me from the moment she politely asked me to swish w/mouthwash, all the way to inserting bite-wing x-rays. Which by the way, make you want to gag, but not if you're looking at and listening to her soothing directions and voice. I swear, I couldn't believe I was at a dentist's office. Then in came Dr. Aylen who was simultaneously looking at my x-rays from her computer in her office. She walked me through the best steps I needed to take in order to get my issues resolved. They offer a discount for cash-paying (uninsured) patients, and also accept something called creditcare that I'll look into. I actually can't wait to come back for a cleaning and some of the other cosmetic fixes I want. I even have a couple of small cavities that need attention, and I'm not scared at all! read more

I had previously gone to another dentist in Seattle and by the end of the appointment, they were recommending Invisalign (my teeth are straight), they said my bite was off and I needed to have a crown redone which would have been $700 after insurance. I left feeling like you do when you take your car in for an oil change and they try to sell you on unnecessary services. So I decided to check out Northgate Smiles (based on Yelp reviews) to get a second opinion. I didn't tell them what the other dentist said just to see if they would recommend the same thing about the crown. They did not and then when I mentioned it, they took a look again and disagreed with what the other dentist had said. I love that they were honest and didn't try to gouge me and my insurance company for extra money. Kayla at the front desk has been super friendly and the office has a cozy feel to it. They also want to make sure you're comfortable, so there's a TV with headphones in each room that you can watch during your cleaning / procedure and they give you a pillow. I'm sure this makes things a lot more bearable for kids coming in too. It was nice to watch TV and not have to focus on constant drilling while I got two cavities filled. They already estimated what insurance would pay and I was able to take care of the $86 payment on my credit card before leaving. No complaints so far! Highly recommend! read more

FIRST of all I have a ridiculous fear of going to the dentist office and I'm 25... Kinda sad. But the staff at Northgate Smiles really made me feel at ease when it comes to my upcoming procedures (root canal ...ek!) FIRST LOOK Pulling into the parking lot you can't see their office. It is one semi- big building that is called "northgate dental building" which has a bunch of different denal offices throughout. I found office number 208 on the second floor, i walked in and was surprised by the smell...usually for dentist offices I expect it to smell like gross dentist chemical stuff. But this office actually smelled good... Incense... Wall flowers? Not sure what it was but it definitely didn't smell like a typical dentist office. The decor is modern, not old, and very welcoming. For anyone waiting they have a keurig machine for tea and what not and also bottles of water. The receptionist, Krystle, greeted me right away and got me signed in. I was then taken to the back room within minutes SERVICE The rooms are welcoming, the first thing I notice is the TV (yes I was excited about that). It's great because during my service I was able to watch tv and distract myself from what was being done. Dr. Aylen was great. I have a big fear of the dentist and she was able to give me many different options for my anxiety. During my root canal Dr. Aylen was able let me know exactly what she was doing with all the different instruments. This was my very first root canal and I had no pain, other than the annoying drilling sounds everything went extremely well. Once everything was done Dr. Aylen switched the TV to show me X-rays of my tooth and pointed out where the procedure was done. AFTER SERVICE I checked out with Krystle at the front desk and she is very knowledgable when it comes to payments and letting me know how my insurance works with what i pay out of pocket. she did a great job finding a good day for my next appointment and she was great at remembering what time of day I preferred. She ket me know that they would follow up with me the next day to see how I was feeling and how the area if the procedure is doing. Northgate smiles office, staff and overall experience has been a very good one. I had to have a tooth pulled and surprisingly and rarely had 3 roots holding it in place which caused for a little extra pull from the Doc! But she made it so easy and quick! I switched to Northgate Smiles after having a dentist downtown who constantly was recommending more work on my teeth (mostly cosmetic that I didn't want or felt like I needed). Northgate Smiles has been great. They are very flexible with scheduling (I don't care about seeing the same dentist every time so for me it has been very easy - if you want to stick to the same one it may be different). They have early appointments (7am) which is great to avoid missing too much work. Dr. Aylen at Northgate Smiles is terrific (and I am writing this, having just gotten home from having a root canal from her!) The office is very high tech, she explains each step of whatever the procedure is, and is as gentle as it is possible to be, given that needles are all-too-often involved. :-) The dental assistant, Sally, also is entirely wonderful. This rating relates to this particular incident only. I have been a happy and satisfied patient of Northgate Smiles for many years. During a recent routine checkup, the dentist wanted to refer me to an endodontist for evaluation of a possible problem. The front desk assured me that a referral and my x-rays would be sent to the endodontic office electronically. When I called the endodontic office for an appointment the next day, there was no referral. I called Northgate Smiles again and was told that the x-rays would be sent. Seven working days later, when I arrived at the endodontic office, they had not received my x-rays. It is baffling how this fell through the cracks with such a high-quality practice. read more

Everybody is extremely welcoming and comforting, I get really anxious even thinking about dental work but they have made it an easy experience. If you are looking for a great dentist, Dr. Karla Aylen is one of the best. I consider myself a "tough guy" but am timid when it comes to dentistry. Karla was extremely gentle, walked through every step, and has changed my opinion and nervousness associated. My husband and I have tried a few dentists over the years - giving them the benefit of the doubt, and patiently just letting time pass without question despite lingering dental issues. But the time came for me to research a new dentist as my husband was not getting answers to his dental problems. I happily chanced upon Dr Aylen and sent myself in first as the guinea pig for my husband (who had no time to try out a new dentist). The office staff are great: friendly, informative, welcoming, honest. Dr Aylen is kind, super informative, sees things fast, explains issues clearly, works quickly to find solutions - and offers options. She is professional and does not force expensive options (as many other dentists, sad to say, do). What is key is her honest feedback - and this can be terribly hard to find as we put ourselves in their hands, at our most vulnerable. My husband was delighted with my find and totally relieved after years of not getting solutions. This dentist found several things that needed attention - just as my husband suspected - but never had relief nor answers in the past few years. I recently went for a cleaning and was told I had 3 cavities despite always having very healthy and taking good care of them. These cavities were diagnosed with a "magic wand" type instrument that read off a number which apparently indicated cavity or not. I was never shown my X-rays. I left with a bad feeling about the whole situation and ended up going to a different dentist for a second opinion. The new dentist took new X-rays (which he actually went over with me) and examined my mouth. He found NO cavities, but did comment that I needed a cleaning, which had been done a few weeks earlier at Northgate Smiles. In many of these other reviews people talk about needing pretty significant dental work. Be wary of any procedures they suggest and be warned the cleanings are sub-par. While Dr. Aylen was professional and efficient, the front office and their communication left a lot to be desired. I had been told that I would be updated with the progress of my insurance - but received one letter which after receiving - I called both the office and my insurance - did not receive a call from Northgate Smiles, but was told that my claim was being processed by my insurance company. I just received notice from Northgate Smiles that they have turned it over to collections. They did far less than the bare minimum to do a fair job of treating a patient. read more

I have been coming here since I was a little girl. I am now 30, and although my original dentist has retired (Miss ya Dr. Smart!), the two dentists he sold his practice to, Carla Aylen and Gabriela Aluas, and their assistants are anal retentive perfectionists who are efficient and professional! AWESOME to have such talent keeping my smile pretty. Even the receptionists are super helpful and very knowlegeable. If you need an estimate, they are on it and usually right on with the prices! I was very happy with my first experience with Dr. Aylen at Northgate Smiles. Beginning with my first phone call to the office to make appointments for 2 of my kids and ending with the treatment plans laid out and clearly explained to me by the dentist and the office staff. Been coming here since 2007. Until then, I have neglected my teeth.. no insurance and blah blah. And then I hated being lectured and judged so I was avoiding going to the dentist for awhile. My co-workers recommended and been coming ever since. I love that they don't judge or lecture. They give you advise but doesn't feel like judging or lectures. Of all the dentists I've had throughout my life, Dr Aylen and Northgate Smiles has been my favorite. They have a very clean and bright office plenty to read in the waiting room. I never have time to read anything because they always call me in for my appointment within 5 minutes of me arriving. I haven't had any major work done there, just the standard cleaning and minor filling work. I like how the rooms are fairly private. I've been to dentists before in which the chairs that patients sit in are only blocked off by a row of cabinets from the next patient over. Dr Aylen is always bright and cheerful and always makes sure that I am comfortable. It's a tad on the cold side in their offices but they have huge windows. I just wear a jacket when I go (and i wore a hat this time, too!) so its not that big of a deal to me. I don't know what else to say other than they do good work, everybody is always cheerful and talkative, and I've never had a problem there! I will continue using them as my regular dentist. read more

Dr. Karla Aylen and Northgate Smiles are terrific. First, I did not have to wait. I was brought back promptly after checking in at the front. I would not have minded waiting; the office is really bright, pretty and airy, but it was a nice surprise to be seen right at my appointment time. Second, the dental hygenist was thorough, gentle, and told me exactly what to expect as she went through the process. Third, Dr. Aylen spent a lot of time talking to me before she looked at my teeth and during her work on my teeth. She did not seem to be in a hurry as some dentists I've seen have been. Dr. Aylen spent time looking at my teeth and my x rays with the hygenist working to record notes at the same time. Dr. Aylen explained what else needed to be done, what I need to watch out for, and when I should come back. She was super communicative and open to my questions. Fourth, When I had to see a dentist in another city, I asked that dentist about what Dr. Karla Aylen had told me. The other dentist confirmed everything I had been told. That gave me great comfort that Dr. Karla Aylen and her staff were not only nice and communicative but doing great work and giving me good advice. Between her, her assistant Monique, and the friendly front desk staff, I always felt my needs were met and I was treated with compassion and respect.
