Northstar's team just installed a metal roof on our 1910 residential house in Sellwood. They did some siding, added some insulation in the attic and other work to give our house a nice upgrade. We decided to invest in a metal roof for its strength, good look, and longevity. And it can be recycled at the end of its life - that seems better than throwing asphalt shingles into a landfill. I have to admit, I was a little hesitant when I received Northstar's bid. They were scheduling work when other metal siding contractors were declining jobs for the rest of the year. Was their availability a bad sign? What was I missing? I'm so glad that I decided to check Northstar's references (glowing) and move forward. They were awesome! Their install team was professional and courteous, from repairing my home's sheathing and installing the house wrap, to interacting with the windows contractor and installing the siding. They clearly had experience installing the product (Metallion's seamless siding). (Example: They were able to disguise a 4" discrepancy in elevation between one corner of the house and an adjacent corner 30' away. Wow!) Most importantly, they were polite and accommodating to my many questions and requests. They even threw in some extra work at cost. We are delighted with the end result. We regularly receive compliments on how our house looks. We are thrilled to have new siding that never needs a drop of paint, a fact that offsets the higher materials cost than cement board. (Speaking of 'offsetting,' the siding manufacturer (SteelScape, in WA) operates on hydroelectric power, and the siding is recyclable at end of life. If you're replacing your siding, consider the material's entire lifecycle.) I would recommend NorthStar Restorations without hesitation. If you can get on their schedules, count yourself lucky. PS - If you're removing your old siding, this is the time to insulate your home. Ask Northstar to install 1" foam board onto your home's sheathing. This will help to prevent thermal bridging. The foam board increased the project cost about 20%: well worth it to increase comfort all year 'round. While you're at it, have NW Weatherization dense pack cellulose into your stud bays -- dense pack cost another 10%. Now our walls are a true R-18 -- no penalty for heat loss through the framing. I would have laid 6' of weed mat around the house and landscaping, to pick up errant shavings of siding scrap at the very end. I would have negotiated a round of touch-up work. Small bare patches, where the color coating gets scratched off during installation, seem unavoidable. read more

Tried calling the first phone number and the voicemail said to call Kirk at another number. Reached Kirk on his phone, explained the project we had and he said he was interested in quoting it. Kirk asked if he could call me back in a few minutes when he was done driving to get the details. And of course I said "Yes". A few minutes went by, an hour went by and then it was the next day. Apparently Kirk is not interested in more business or he can't just say no I'm not interested. Too bad... because we had several remodeling projects to be done. It is so hard these days to find legit, honest contractors. If someone is not interested in a project I would just rather have them say No than give me the runaround and lie. Customer service is a sign of how your project is going to be run...especially when this was one of the owners. read more

This was the 2nd project that the team at Northstar Restorations has done for our family. The Northstar team was great work with throughout the entire process. They removed my tired old cedar shingles and replaced it with a beautiful presidential shake roof that fits with the guidelines of the neighborhood association and makes the house look awesome! If customer service, respect and professional courtesy is important to you, then don't consider using North Star Restoration Roofing and Gutter service. I've hired this company on three separate occasions to install roofs and gutters on family-owned rental properties. Over the years, two of the three have had issues with leaking. Recently, my tenant at one of my properties noticed a leak and mold spot on the ceiling above the washer and dryer. The spot was in the same area of the washer drain vent on the roof. I called the owner Tom on his cell phone, and he told me, he couldn't help me and gave me another number to call. I spoke to a receptionist, and we made an appointment for Antonio to inspect the roof at 11AM. At 11:30 my tenant called and said she needed to leave and hasn't heard from NS Roofing. I called the office and the receptionist, said Antonio was talking to the owner and was running late. I again asked for a timeline, she didn't know. He finally arrived after 12:30. Later that day, I received a call from the receptionist, and she told me, that there is moss on the roof, and it will cost me $850 to have it fixed. I told aher; the moss isn't an issue. We recently sprayed for the second time. The mold isn't my concern and how can I have mold inside the home around the drain vent area unless that area wasn't sealed properly when installing the roof? I paid for a 30-year roof and now I have mold. She said she's not a roofer and doesn't know what I'm talking about. She will have Antonio call me to discuss. I wait two days and call the receptionist back. I get a message saying the voicemail isn't set up and I'm unable to leave a message. I call the office number noted on the bill that I received and Tom the owner answers. He tells me again; he can't help me and to never call him again. I explained that I've called the other numbers that he gave me with no luck. Moving on, I called the estimator also named Tom and explained my story. He told me he would talk to Antonio and will have him call me back. Again, I waited two days and didn't receive a call. I called Antonio, and he spoke to me at a heightened level stating that the roof had not been maintained and he would send me pictures in ten minutes. I explained that the roof has been maintained and this is the first time I've dealt with moss. Regardless of the moss, why is there a leak around the drainpipe and asked if had been sealed. He could not answer my questions but said, I will send you pictures and call you back. I waited several hours before he sent me pictures of the roof, but I can't identify the problem and I still haven't received a call back from Antonio. That was one week ago. Obviously, I'm not going to get answers or any kind of customer service from NS Roofing If their services are not covered in the warranty, all I expect is someone to explain why. But when the owner of the company tells me "Don't ever call me again, I'm assuming he isn't interested in future referrals. read more

When my wife and I first called Northstar Restoration we just wanted a quote on a new roof, as Kirk was doing our estimate 2 things happened first He was on time and 2nd I found out they do much more than roofs. Our house built in 1996 had the original roof, siding and windows all of which were starting to show age so after Kirk got us a bid for all 3 we signed the very competitive contract. Antonio was our lead over seeing every project which included Roof, Siding, Stonework and painting and Antonio made sure the crews did top notch work, we are very pleased with the work they did. NorthStar Restoration does a great job of following up and making sure we were always happy, Allie who is in the office called us all the time and followed up on everything going on with our home.
