McDonald's was a proud volunteer today, helping to package food items. Today, we sorted and repacked pancake mix to go out to various organizations. You also have to label the items with nutritional information as well as a cooking label. What's good is that anyone can volunteer to share your time by working with them. Only requirement is that you're 16 years of age with an adult or 18 years or older. So come by yourself as Devon did or come as a group. It is a great way to give back to the community. They also give tours so you can truly understand the impact hunger has on the community, the state. I truly was blessed by this event.

You're also required to take a financial course (I think it's 2 hours long for 6 sessions?) that literally goes through everything: savings, debt, how to's, traps, emergency funds, etc. it gives you a lot to think about and if you're starting from no where, it helps get you on the right track. When the reality was not tenable for us we had to drop out and they refunded to refund all the fees we paid even though it was long before the school year started. I thought I'd be doing 1-2 days a month in my kids classroom but because they couldn't get enough students enrolled, I and other parents had to pick up even more shifts. I would be weary if you don't have a lot of time on your hands. Also if they tell you you'll get into a morning class from the waitlist it's a lie. They'll say just about anything to get you enrolled. That's my experience.

SJFS is an amazing place! They provide food to so many people! Everybody walks away with bags…read moreoverflowing with many types of food. They have frozen meat (beef, chicken, pork), dairy, eggs (sometimes), lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, ready-made meals, canned goods, dry food, dessert, and more. Since their model is based on donations, you never know what you're going to get- but that's part of the fun. I love seeing what unusual vegetables and fruits they have. The volunteers are great, and they help new clients figure out the store's layout. They're always available to answer questions. Most of the volunteers only speak English, but a few are fluent (at least at a conversational level) in Spanish and other languages. There is a line, so be prepared to wait awhile. The volunteers set up tents to cover people in line if it's raining. I definitely recommend going here if you are struggling to afford food. It's a lifesaver. It's 100% free to use and doesn't have income barriers.
