Went on half day near shore bottom fishing trip. The boat got limits on rock fish and only 2…read morelings. Crew were nice and helpful when approached. Poles were lined up, all with different lures and colors. Was a little concerning as I would think they would have several lures dialed in. But what do I know. When we started fishing, they were there for when people hooked up. What I wish I would have seen was active management of what fish were biting on and changing up for those that were not getting bit, like me. One guy a couple down caught 13 with a white lure that looked like squid. I had some purple thing that caught two. I grabbed another rod that had a blue metal jig on it, but that did not work. The two I got were on the shrimp fly. I did not see effort to catch lings. But reports off other boats I saw that went out the same day got close to limits on lings. Our boat got two. I'm glad I got five rock fish, Weisheit I caught them all. They worked hard to ensure we got the boat limit. I think if they actively managed the lures, it would not have been that hard.

Every year since 2013, our extended family and close friends come to Waldport, Oregon for a fun…read morefamily crabbing vacation! We've always used McKinley's Marina in Alsea Bay for our crabbing boats and crab pots. The staff is professional, helpful and could not be nicer!!!! When we arrive at our scheduled time, they are ready to kit us out with lifejackets, crabbing boats & crab pots. The boats are fitted with a pulley to help haul in the pots full of Dungeness crab! You need to bring the bait with you (we use raw chicken quarters.) Each boat has room for up to 4 adults (and a couple of kiddos if necessary). We head out just before high tide. It's so much fun! When we get back to the dock, the staff check our crab to make sure we have legal size males (only) and they prep it and steam it right there at the docks. They even have picnic tables for us to feast on our fresh catch. Very safe for everyone who understands how to stay in the raft, so, not for the small or irresponsible. The whales show, usually, and can do spectacular displays. Cari's enthusiasm catches up everyone as she does her scientific thing, sinking cameras on ropes, making notes, etc. Always trying to find what makes this area so attractive to this particular animal. Recommend highly for those who want a good, safe intro to seacreatures! Lots of birds, too.

Ok - if you wanna have a screaming fun fest, and enjoy the heck out of yourself - take a zodiac…read moreboat out of the world's smallest harbor and go look for whales. i had SO much fun doing this. yes, i screamed almost the whole way - it was SO exhilarating and @*%* scarey at the same time. I LOVE zodiac boats, but I really didn't quite understand WHAT I was in for on this trip. First, it starts with just GETTING OUT of the harbor. The guy was hesitating when I went up to the dock. It was a little rocky out. Depoe Bay is the world's smallest harbor (see pictures). Its tiny. The big waves smash in, and well, you know zodiac boats are those orange rubber boats and are, well, er, small. You can only go out of Depoe Bay on a fairly good day, as the waves coming INTO this tiny harbor make it nigh impossible to get OUT in any boat, let alone a zodiac. Add a little bit of bad weather and well, Madness Ensues. OMG! we went VERTICAL trying to get up and over the waves to get OUT of the harbor. Once we got out, and we had to try about 3 times, he sped up the boat and well, More Madness Ensued. Its like a really fast, rocky roller coaster and you're not strapped in. Then there's the whales, petting distance, from me in the small rubber boat. Whale bigger than boat. Well, it was a rollicking good time - and I went hoarse with laffing and screaming. The boat dude was laffing his head off at me. They basically guarantee you a whale sighting, as the whales live there and hang there quite a bit. And yes, I saw em. They were BIG and beautiful. This qualifies as one of the best times I have ever had in my life! GO FOR IT! its KaRAAAzee fun. Find the zodiac guys right there on Highway 101 on the cement bridge over the dock - and No No NO, don't take the boring wooden boat trip. GET ON THAT ZODIAC!

The shop is really a bait & tackle shop, so if you wanted to catch some yourself instead, I suppose you could, but in this instance we were looking for grab-and-go... TW: the fellow who chose and cooked our crab brought it out squirming and feisty, which made some of my companions uncomfortable. Locals tweaking the city folk, so be prepared! But ultimately the two people working on July 4th were friendly and funny and nice, and the crab was epic!
