Great place, my dogs love it. I will be honest I was very reluctant to go here after reading the yelp post from 2011/2012, but I already made reservations beforehand, and the staff/day care crew seemed amazing. They greeted not only me but both my dogs by name (I know for you Internet trolls that they have a computer that tells them that, but I like when a business is professional enough to greet people/pets by name). I kenneled both Romeo (large dog) and Lizzie (medium) at northwest kennels, they both seemed clean and happy after a week under the care of NW kennels. When I picked them up they both were bright eyed and entergized but when I got home they both hit the ground and slept soundly for hours. Stars: I rated them four because a lot of local kennels did seem to include day care free with boarding, northwest didn't. But of all the kennels I called thier staff seemed the nicest/ professional that I talked too. I would recommend nw kennels read more

GREAT first grooming experience for our dog with Kati at Northwest K-9! Our pup is 9 months old, shy, and sensitive and she came out of her appointment all tail wags! She's so soft and smells amazing, and Kati did a beautiful job trimming and shaping her hair so that she kept her natural look, just more manageable and tidy. My friend said, "She's still Clover, just 40% less Einstein haha. Very cute!" Everyone we spoke to was so friendly and the whole place was beautiful and clean. We'll definitely be back! read more

I would like to highly recommend Northwest K-9 Inn and Spa - my dog has stayed there many times, but this last time was while I was recovering from surgery and could not care for my dog. While there he started feeling poorly and not eating, so they called me and kept me apprised of his status. When we jointly decided he needed to go to the vet, they took him to the emergency vet and waited with him until he could be seen. They spent several hours waiting for diagnosis and results and then brought him back to the kennel and proceeded to care for him there and gave him his special food and meds. They definitely went above and beyond for me and my dog and I truly am grateful for such caring and professional people! read more

Great place, we have used them about 3 times now when we can't travel with our small dog. Facility is great, staff has been great. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is the lack of a FREE Sunday pickup. Every time we've used them we come back from our trip on Sunday. We have been taking our two energetic, fluffy and BIG dogs to NW Kennels for a couple of years now. We have utilized their fantastic daycare program in the past and continue to use them for boarding and grooming. While our dogs haven't been at daycare in awhile, they still get excited when we drop them off for boarding. They ADORE Brandy and Melinda and the rest of the crew! All interactions with the entire staff have always been friendly, enthusiastic and professional. It puts at ease to know that our dogs are well taken care of when we are gone. We were really saddened by the turn of events at NW-- our dog used to go there for daycare and we have spent hundreds-- probably thousands at this point-- of dollars in daycare packages. They were always very accommodating to us then. But when our dog was no longer able to attend daycare and we asked for a refund on the very expensive package that we purchased, we were told no, that was against their policy to provide refunds. We asked to see paperwork that showed their policy in writing and no one ever responded. We have called multiple times and texted and management has never once returned our calls. It's not the money that matters at this point; it's that we were completely disregarded after spending a ton of money there in the past. True colors showing through, I guess. read more

The staff honestly care about the animals they provide for! I bring my pup on occasion, when I make it across the pass, but despite the length of time between stays the staff remember my dog and are genuinely excited to see her. My dog LOVES her stays with Northwest Kennels and comes home happy and pleasantly tired from her time in daycare. After two failed dog sitter experiences in our home, I toured all of the local kennels to find a kennel to board our 2 dogs for a long weekend in Oct. 2019. I chose NW K-9 because of the cost for what they provided & for the kennel size. I filled out the online pet feeding instructions & when I packed the dog food bag, I included a written sheet of strict instructions. I provided a bag of kibble & 8 trays of wet food, enough to last the weekend. My little dog does not eat the kibble, only eats a tray of wet food at dinner. When I picked the dogs up, my little dog seemed confused, quiet, & behaving strangely. I put both dogs in the cargo area of my SUV & she jumped over all the rows of seats to my lap where she uncharacteristically fell fast asleep for the ride home. I thought this was due to being kenneled all weekend & it was new to her. We got home & it was dinnertime so I fed them. She ate a tray of wet food within 5 seconds. And begged for more so I gave her a 2nd tray. I opened the packed bag of food that I had sent for the weekend & it still contained 7 out of the 8 trays of wet food. So, my little dog did not eat all weekend. And, my big dog did not get his tray of wet food in his kibble for dinner. I immediately called & left a voicemail asking what they ate if I came home with all of their food. I got a voicemail back from them a while later indicating that they checked their feeding chart & my dogs were fed as instructed by me. I would NEVER instruct them to feed my dogs ONE tray of wet food for the whole weekend when we go through 2 each night feeding. They instructed me to contact them if I had further questions. They were closed so I sent an email with my response & I have not heard back.... it has been 3 weeks now & not a word. I gave them one star because both dogs got groomed on their last day & they were clean for their arrival home. I spent $360 there for a long weekend with grooming & my dogs were not fed. I will never use NW again & am seriously disappointed in my decision after being so careful with touring each kennel facility in Bellingham. My feeding instructions were very clear & detailed. There was no way that they could have been confused on how & what to feed my dogs. The attendant who called me back said that I had indicated that each dog gets a "sprinkling" of wet food on their nightly kibble. No. They don't & I NEVER would have said that since it is not true. Good luck in finding quality dog care. It's proving to be very difficult for us. read more

The groomer is horribly rude. Had my cat Sadie groomed twice here. First time there were no problems, and I left a nice tip. Second time, I picked up my cat to a note on bill "take cat elsewhere".. "Too old to be groomed". It made no sense my cat is only 12 years old. I was very upset and called to speak to the owner who never called me back after repeated attempts. The office manager called me back and had no help in why the groomer wrote this or why so rudely I was treated. I called my vet regarding the "too old to be groomed" note and in a nutshell they told me this was a bunch of crap and not true. It's actually vets that groom cats where it can get risky because they use anethestic...a regular good groomer should have no issue with a 12 year old cat and there's no hurt to them by being groomed. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAT HERE FOR GROOMING. I believe this place absolutely only cares about kenneling dogs. I was treated poorly and so was my cat. Found a wonderful new groomer who treats me and my animal wonderfully and has zero issues grooming her!!! read more

This is to warn others who own & love a large dog because what happened to us could happen to them. Our dog had been in daycare there for quite some time with no recent reports of undesirable behavior. Quite the opposite in fact. Then the week before Christmas our dog is expelled from daycare for bad behavior: 1. EITHER they lied to us weekly OR they lied about the reason for expulsion 2. We should have been given time to make other arrangements -- we were not. 3. Current staff places blame on past staff We knew there was a lot of part time help; but that's no reason for such unprofessional behavior. The staff member they were blaming had been gone for over 3 months. That person had no responsibility for telling us how well our dog was doing in September, October, November and the first half of December. GET REAL FOLKS! read more

I am so pleased with my Great Dane puppy's stay. Upon our arrival the front desk staff made my puppy feel very at home. I left there with the feeling of peace knowing that he would be taken care of. We boarded our Rottweiler Tyson for the first time with Northwest Kennels over the Christmas break, and we were originally nervous about how he would react to the experience. Not only was this our first time boarding in Bellingham, this was our first time boarding him period. We were very happy about his spacious kennel (Tyson is close to 130 pounds), and signed him up for the extra play time in the yard they have available. When we came to pick him up, we were greeted with a happy dog who showed no signs of stress. The staff are very nice and took quite a shine to our dog (although how could you not), and we look forward to using them again next time we come through Bellingham. read more

Northwest Kennels has been a special place for us and our pets. We have always found it to be spotless and the staff to be very helpful and friendly. The owners are on site, and hands on. We wouldn't leave our pets with anyone else. I noticed in a prior review that someone had a problem with the groomer, and we understand that she is no longer there, and that they have an awesome groomer now. NW kennels has been a great place for our dog. He loves being able to play and run with the other dogs. My wife and I began using the kennel when we went on vacation. The people at the kennel were great with him, they let us know if anything was going with him. Our dog enjoyed his time there so much that we decided to try the day care, and we've been taking him 1-2 days a week. He runs to the door with excitement, and is picked up tired. Its great to see the video's/photos on Facebook of his activities. We're big fans of Northwest Kennels. read more

I've deleted my previous review of Northwest Kennels, because they have taken a giant step backwards and become more like another doggie day care place I don't like. While we have been loyal customers for a year, we were abruptly told today that our business was no longer of interest to them. They recently changed their "top dog" position, because the previous one, Michelle, departed for greener pastures. Apparently the new person doesn't like big dogs. She abruptly kicked us out of day care, along with several other large dogs. We didn't even get our towels and dog toy back. What was most upsetting is that we were getting positive feedback as to how our German Sheppard was doing. Then Bang! We're persona non grata. Here are some other things I don't like about this place. First, two of the staff spent a lot of time ragging on how terrible Michelle was. This is very unprofessional. From our perspective Michelle was a gem. Second, they only have one room for the dogs, so small and large dogs must coexist. Third, their new trainer has an abrasive and overly assertive personality. Fourth, they have strange hours. They don't open until 8 AM, which means that if you work you might have a hard time dropping off your dog. Most of the other places open at 6:30. Fifth, the owners are not very involved in the day care side of the business. I suspect that this place would run smoother if they were. I could go on, but you get the idea. It's so sad to see a good place going downhill, but that's what's happening at Northwest Kennels. read more

Northwest Kennels is a very standard looking boarding and daycare facility but what sets these guys apart from the competition is the incredible staff. I know this because I currently work as a kennel attendant, so I have first hand experience! The manager, Brandy, puts so much love and effort into each and every animal that walks through that door and is always happy to accommodate for any kind of special needs that the animal or their person might need, as well as always going above and beyond to provide the best experience ever! Shauna, the groomer, is not only great and efficient at her job grooming the animals, but always takes extra care for the more anxious or timid critters that visit her. I always hear her sweet talking the more scared pups in her tub, taking it slower for them and making sure they're always comfortable. And then, of course,the girls in daycare, Annika and Kazia are always wonderful. They spend time with these dogs nearly every day and really have a special connection with all of the regulars and are very quick to fall in love with new pack members! Not only do they make sure all of the animals are feeling loved and happy, but they're quick on their toes and are great at breaking up any arguments that might break out between the dogs in a fast and efficient way so that there is little to no harm done! Fights are inevitable sometimes in daycare but they are pros that you can trust your dogs with! And lastly, the staff that Brandy seeks out to hire for the kennel attendant positions are always loving and compassionate for animals so that you know your pets are getting the quality, personal care that you are paying for! I just moved to the area and was in a no pets aloud place :( So I kept my cat Tokki at Northwest kennel for about two weeks while I looked for a place to live that was pet friendly. All the staff that I encountered here were really friendly and I felt at ease leaving him there under their care. They require vet records for pets to stay, but I had left his record at my parents home in Ca. The morning I brought him in I had to go to work shortly after so the staff took care of calling the clinic I took him to and verifying that his medical records were up to date. Furthermore they let me come multiple times to visit and play with him during his stay and allowed me to use the play room as well as walk him around the property. (yes he is a leashed trained cat) The facilities are very nice and well kept. Every time I came he and his cage were nice and clean and he always looked comfortable. Several of the staff commented on how much they liked him, which is a plus of course :D Since I didn't know how long I would have him there, there was no decided pickup day. I called about half an hour before and picked him with no delay. He was clean (as usual) and smelled good too! In my opinion this is an excellent place to keep pets. If I ever need boarding for my cat again I will definitely take him to Northwest Kennel. They went above and beyond my expectations! Thank you! read more

This is an update of my previous review. After I posted my review about our dog that got cut, Jane emailed me to let me know that the groomer no longer works there. This lady is so dense, she doesn't even realize that our whole ordeal wasn't about the groomer, but about HER UNPROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE and refusal to accept RESPONSIBILITY for what happened to our dog while under her care. We understand that accidents will happen with grooming, but it was Jane's irresponsible actions that prompted our negative review of her kennel. It is quite sad that she has posted 2 fictitious "good" reviews after my initial "bad" review in order to address the issue of the groomer not working there anymore. This is Jane's way of trying to make up an excuse for what happened to our dog (which is also in violation of Yelp's policy - posting positive reviews of your own business). It was never about the groomer, Jane, wake up! I would never recommend your kennel to anyone! ----- ORIGINAL REVIEW: We dropped our dog off for a 4-day stay & scheduled to have him groomed. We returned from our trip, picked up our dog & took him home. A few hours later my wife noticed that he had an open bleeding wound under his leg. I called the kennel to inform them of the injury knowing it was after business hours. I assumed I would get a return call from them first thing the next morning. Nobody from the kennel returned my call the next day during their first 4 hours of business. I called them again an hour before their scheduled closing time & no answer. I left another message telling them that we would immediately be coming to their kennel to discuss this before they closed for the day & that I was very upset that they had failed to return my call. As we were walking out the door the owner, Jane, called me & claimed there must have been some problem with the phones. I told Jane what we discovered & described our dogs injury to her over the phone. She told me she was a nurse & tried to convince me that it was probably an abscess that had just surfaced or that it was some type of cyst. I told her it looked like a cut from clippers/scissors that more than likely took place while he was getting groomed. It was obvious the wound had been bleeding for a while due to dry blood in the fur near the wound. I told Jane we were on our way. When we got there Jane brought the groomer out & they both looked at the wound & gasped. The groomer never spoke a word about whether or not she had noticed the wound while she was grooming him or if she remembered possibly cutting him. Jane told my wife that her opinion as a nurse was that we should just put gold bond powder on the cut. My wife asked Jane if she was a vet & she said no. My wife told her we wanted to get an opinion from a vet & that she expected Jane to pay for the exam given the circumstances; the injury occurred at her kennel while our dog was under her care & the injury happened at the hands of one of her employees. Jane claimed that it wasn't her responsibility & INSISTED that she should not be held liable for the injury to our dog while he was under her care. Jane said she was under the impression we came to the kennel to seek her medical opinion as a nurse. We told Jane that we wanted a vet to see our dog, not a nurse. Jane recommended a vet, but he was unable to see our dog that day. We told her we didn't want to wait until Monday due to the possibility of infection. We told Jane that we wanted to take our dog to a 24 hour emergency hospital since it was the only place open & Jane said, "no way, that will be too expensive!" My wife told her it would be less expensive than paying for the bill if our dog's injury became infected & more serious by putting the vet visit off. At this point Jane started making more excuses saying that she "couldn't make a decision like that" & that her "husband makes the financial decisions." My wife told her we would gladly wait. She left for a while & when she returned she finally reluctantly agreed to pay the vet bill. Even though Jane reluctantly agreed to pay the vet bill, she refused to accept responsibility for what happened. When she called the pet hospital to set up paying she told them that our dog had a "sore." The vet that examined our dog confirmed that the injury was indeed a cut & that it was not an abscess, a cyst or a "sore." We told the vet about Jane's recommendation to put gold bond powder on the wound & she said that applying it would not have been a good treatment for a dog. I would NEVER recommend Northwest Kennels to anyone! Jane is an irresponsible & uncaring individual who is the last person on earth that should be running a kennel. She proved to us that not only does she not care about the well being of the animals that people are paying her to care for, but that she also does not feel that she is responsible for anything that might happen to the animals while in her care at the hands of her employees.
