I have had 3 surgeries there starting 15 years ago. My last surgery at Northwest was in July, 2025. The care and communication has fallen off to where I would never return. My pet got better care at our Vet. This IS NOT the best hospital in the area, as they claim. When I tried to get some answers regarding discharge practices and procedures, I was given the run around. When I did get through to someone and asked for a name, I was told they were not at liberty to say. When I asked why I was being forwarded to security I was told, because they Don't Like Your Questions. I got a call from the head of security who threatened to have me arrested if I called again, then hung up on me. You will be better served at another of the many hospitals in the area Coeur d Alene, Spokane Valley or Spokane. I previously gave a great review to the hospital. Unfortunately after my wife's recent total knee replacement I have had to revise my review. They have severe issues with staffing, competence. After her surgery she was brought to her room in uncontrollable pain. It appears the nerve block that was administered did not take, and The CRNA failed to inform the surgeon. He was also directed to perform a block after the surgery. He did not. I asked the staff for the next 5 hours to bring in a doctor or anesthesiologist. This never happened. It was only when I went to the nurses station and told them to prepare her to leave AMA, and I would be calling an ambulance to pick her up, did I finally get some help. Before leaving, the Doctor called in a prescription pain relief to Walgreens. When we arrived there, the pharmacist told me he couldn't fill narcotics with in 24hrs. It was very fortunate that I had recently had surgery and had pain medication with me. We also cancelled additional surgeries because of poor treatment with pain management , and staffing concerns. I would never have a procedure there again. I later had a procedure at another facility, and My wife later had 2 other surgeries at Holy Family. OMG, what a difference. She received the very best care, and actually left the hospital laughing. I would not recommend this campus to anyone considering a surgical procedure. read more

worst place ever physical therapy people are ok not all of them but a couple there are maybe 2or3 nurses but that's it nobody else is qualified to do this job, they need to close the doors before they kill somebody. honestly not one person knows what the other is doing, ever . This is only about the billing department. They continue to have issues with incompetence. Over billing, applying payments to wrong accounts, threatening collections without doing their job. Im not sure if its laziness or a system issue or both. Im not sure why payments are not attached to the patients name as a whole but it seems it's just the visit number, which is definitely problematic especially if there is a data entry problem. The company puts all responsibility on the patient to identify and fix the problem but in the meantime you are required to double or triple pay or go to collections. How do you not see one account with a positive balance and one with a negative and not realize you applied it to the wrong account? How can you trust these finance people when simple data entry eludes them? read more

Horrible place to have surgery. Don't be fooled by the admitting staff. The post care was non-existent. The nurse reporting was non factual. They over medicated me and caused liver trauma and no memory of two days. If I could prove their negligence I would hold them accountable. read more

I had my Total Hip Replacement surgery here just 3 weeks ago. It was one of the best experiences I've had. All of the nurse staff, therapists and my surgeon were truly exceptional. I cant rave enough about the wonderful care I received while here. read more

Some of the employees at this hospital are extremely rude and unprofessional. I was treated very badly before and during the day of my surgery which resulted in a significant mix-up concerning my procedure. Saw Dr John Swanson in Urgent Care on 6/28/2024 after waiting 2 hours. Came in with what I thought was a pinched nerve. Could hardly move my shoulder. The only time he laid hands on me was to listen to heart and lungs. Asked me to perform ZERO range of motion exercises and told me I was having a muscle spasm. Wrote for Flexeril, Toradol and Hydrocodone (even tho I told him I wasn't interested in Hydros as they do nothing for pain, they just numb your brain, and the Toradol shot I had the day before had done nothing). Billed a 99203, which, if you're in the medical field you know that typically this code is a new patient code, which requires a DETAILED exam and typically 30 minutes with the patient. I also got an EOB for "pathology and laboratory services and DME" for which no lab tests were ordered or performed and no DME was given. Turns out, after seeing another MD, I have a pinched nerve!! Clearly we are only interested in dishing out narcs and billing as high as possible. I would advise going somewhere else. read more

There is one question you need to ask when considering Northwest Speciality Hospital. Dr. Corey Richardson and his PA, Brian, in particular. Just one, "What happens when, Whoopsies! You nick an artery"? I did not ask that one and more more than a year after having my gallbladder removed, I'm gonna give you the answer. Your life will be so drastically changed you may never recover. I hope I'm wrong about the never part. When you plead to know why you hurt badly and why you've admitted, they send in PA Brain to stand, arms crossed at the end of your bed, to answer, "You had you're gallbladder removed. Sometimes that hurts. It's not like we nicked an artery anything." Dr. Corey Richardson will sit in front of you months after and assure you, "We want to make you feel better", lies. They'll tell you they will cover your imagining to see why there's no progression in healing but when you show up try to make you pay for. Even if you've lost your insurance because you require 24/7 home care and so your spouse has to quit their job to provide it. So, ask. "What happens to me when, Whoopsie! We thought this place was great and reasonably priced for those who do not have insurance coverage, until a month later when we received another bill - after being told everything was paid in full - for hundreds of dollars more! We needed 3 simple stitches and the cost ended up being over $600 when they quoted us (and charged us at time of service) for $115. Quite a difference!!! And not worth the charge. Didn't even get a band aid for that price. read more

"We [#NWSHIdaho] did more damage to this patient than good." A fine synopsis by one of the medical staff at Northwest Specialty Hospital. They are, or more accurately WERE, a 5 star hospital specializing in elective surgeries ; offering gourmet meals (no longer available) and top notch care (including saline bags that were 6 months out of date, expired; and injecting an incorrect medication into the feed tube which began to crystallize immediately in the tube, not a good sign and a possible code blue had it not been noticed - by the patient!! Details on this debacle of professional treatment and educated staff include the following gaffs, errors and pure stupidity demonstrated by the doctors and medical teams at #NWSHBaratric - Dr Pennings experienced an error when stapling the #Roux-en-y and caused a leakage that was not believed or acknowledged by the hospital until the patient has to return due to excessive white blood cell count done by local doctor. - Dr Pennings placed a #Stent in the problem area, not doing a flush or cleansing of the leakage material. Turned out the stent broke and caused another emergency return visit to #NWSHIdaho - Dr Pennings' PA Brian demonstrated derogatory and insensitive attitude and care due to personal beliefs against the patients lifestyle. - With multiple emergency issues , #DrPennings decided to continue a "conversative approach" and appeared to regard prayer and religion as key factors in healing... odd, considering he is a medically trained physician and not a religious scholar , at least not at #NWSHIdaho - Due to sharing the true story of what happened, the comedy of errors that the hospital perpetrated on a patient, the weekly REQUIRED Support Group was "cancelled due to less than positive feedback" until January 2023 when it will be held only once a month. Such a truly nice thing to do to people struggling with their weight loss during the holiday season - gotta admire the guts (pun intended) it took do pull that mental and emotionally damaging step that all potential bariatric patients will suffer from. It seems the truth of a mistake in surgery is not going to be allowed to be shared in a private, safe and confidential environment like they claim... hmmm - Yes, form signed that warned against risk of death, injury, infection but NOT against incompetence and/or inferior medical equipment that failed or was installed incorrectly and certainly not warned against LEAKAGE which apparently can and may have shortened my life span as it could cause future problems due to the length of time it was ignored by Dr Pennings and his PA Brian - A final follow up resulted in Pennings stating "You lived. My experience at NWSH was better than I could have hoped. I saw Dr. Duke for potential endometriosis in February of 2019. At our first appointment he was able to pre-diagnose me with adenomyosis, as well as diagnose me with two other conditions that I had no idea I was suffering from. I was booked for surgery the next month, and the care and attention I received in between was phenomenal. Dr. Duke and his staff answered all of my questions and concerns, I was sent to physical therapy in order to prepare my body for major surgery, and I was confident in my doctor and supporting staff. The day of my surgery went by in a blur, but everyone was friendly and helpful. The nurse that put in my IV was going to place it in my hand, but after expressing some concern, she happily put it in my arm instead. I was offered anti-anxiety meds before surgery, and all of the potential side effects were explained. They kept my husband and parents in the loop throughout the day, and I don't think any one of us had a concern or complaint come up. Before, during, and after my surgery, I never felt alone. I have had multiple follow up's with Dr. Duke to make sure that my recovery is on track, I was fully informed of the results of my biopsies, and was even given photos as a "souvenir"! The entire staff that I encountered over these last few months has been nothing short of professional, caring, and kind. The nurses even celebrated with me when I was finally able to use the bathroom post-op. I would highly recommend NWSH to anyone who has to have any sort of procedure done. My wife went here for a serious operative procedure. She was an inpatient for three days. From the admission, surgery, recovery, and everything in between, the staff---(when I say Staff, I mean EVERYONE involved in the hospital right down to housekeeping) were courteous, attentive, and enthusiastic professionals! The infection control is amazing. They live their infection control regime like it was gospel. The patient to nurse ratio is 4:1 or less. To top off this multi-tiered cake, THE FOOD IS WONDERFUL!! Everything is homemade and tasty. I would take my wife here on date-night for a good dinner! When have you EVER heard that said of a hospital?? The people make this place. It's everything other hospitals SHOULD be but ARENT. My expectations were shattered in a delightful manner. The bad comments I read on this site are more than likely people whose capability of satisfaction is impossible to fulfill. read more

At NW Specialty Hospital I found great professionalism, hospitality and customer service from the moment Dr. Keese and I decided to schedule surgery. Multiple phone calls came in with perfect timing to review insurance details, pre-op protocols, and billing always with friendly supportive administrative staff. The main lobby was well appointed and comfortable, very much like a living room, even with the medically necessary CoVID safety measures in place, one barely notices. On this topic I will provide this friendly feedback to one of the pre op nurses, Cory... as a healthcare professional myself, I want to remind you we have an ethical obligation to keep personal beliefs on this subject out of your workplace. The last thing a patient wants to hear is conflicts you may have with medical masking practices that protect everyone. Particularly when they are relying on your medical competence. Voicing such beliefs that imply a disregard for medical safety practices erode basic professionalism. Outside of that, the pre-op team was great! Shout out to Tim for his calming voice, deliberate and conscious movement around my plethora of tubes, wires, and needles, his humor, and his fun conversation, all the while keeping his focus on my needs and making me feel like his priority, even though I'm sure his caseload was full. Eric my anesthesiologist provided a seamless array of medications that made my "twilight" state, (though I can't remember a majority of it ) painless, side-effect free, and quickly recoverable. In Post-op I was greeted by star powered nurse Amanda who has that perfect combination of medical professional, friendly neighbor you finally got to meet and hang out with, and hostess-with-the-mostest. She was watchful, informed, anticipated my needs, leaned into my sense of humor while on drugs , and offered bedside tea service!!! After a 24 hour fast she offered the best tea and toast I ever had complete with strawberry jam and vanilla yogurt on the side, exactly what I needed. The next day, I received a follow up call from yet another friendly voice who heard this review first!!! Truly, I have had less pain during this entire surgery and recovery process than I did living with this injury. Thanks NW Specialty Hospital! Your care and attention to detail, and prioritizing the patient right down to my door to door wheelchair ride made my insurance deductible worth every penny. read more

I had a knee replacement @ NWSH, and wouldn't recommend the facility. The physical therapist was good. I've got terrific veins all over my hands and arms, but the pre-op nurse placed my IV in a little tiny vein on the palm side of my wrist--one of the most painful places an IV can go--and didn't even look anywhere else for a better vein or standard site. Next, in spite of stating to the anesthetist I did not want a pre-op medication (which is given for anxiety and I was NOT anxious, plus I needed to talk to my doctor before surgery), but he slammed it into my IV anyway. In case he didn't know this goes by the legal term of "assault." Due to the surgery I was immobilized in bed. On multiple occasions the officious cafeteria wait staff would walk in the room, ask why I wasn't ordering meals off the menu, note the menu way on the other side of the room where I couldn't reach it, and turn around and leave the room. This was repeated for each meal. My grand total of food intake over 2 1/2 days was a cup of broccoli. I paid how much for that??? The nursing staff left much to be desired as well. Even though PLENTY of pain meds were ordered by my doctor, the first time I received anything for pain was 24 HOURS after my surgery--and 20 hours after my pain started. And the PCA (continuous drip of pain meds, standard for joint replacements) wasn't started for another 24 hours. My discharge nurse was the only nurse that had any sense--too bad she was only my nurse for half an hour. After reviewing my medications, she was dismayed at how little pain medication I'd gotten, and tried to apologize for the previous nurses. And the billing department sucks! I was trying to dispute some charges on my bill for medications I knew I hadn't received, but they wouldn't return my phone calls over a couple of months to get it straightened out. While trying to resolve the issue they sent me to collections and ruined my credit!!! Thanks a lot, Northwest Specialty Hospital, from start to finish my experience there was nothing I'd like to repeat. The best description of the place is AWFUL! read more

First time at this hospital. I must say it beats any hospital in spokane. All the staff were extremely attentive, professional and knowledgeable. My main complaint with the spokane hospitals is the noise and unprofessionalism. My wife was in recovery for about an hour. during that time you are subject to doctors nurses and other staff walking back and forth answering calls and waiting on other patients. There was no loud talking, laughing, telling jokes, or being direspectful to the patients. This has happened to us countless times in spokane, especially at Valley- unprofessional staff there. I hope we can go there for future operations, however unfortunately it is privately owned and not just any doctor can use the facility read more

The NWSH is horrible. I had Dr. Buchanen for a lumber stenos's. He punctured my spine and he was not prepared to stop the spinal fluid. I had to stay 4 day's in this dirty hospital. BEWARE!!! These people LIE and tell you they're in your insurance network then you get a huge bill when it's discovered they are not. Here is my letter to Northwest Specialty Hospital after a year of doing battle with them and my insurance company, I urge you to go elsewhere: April 5, 2015 Northwest Specialty Hospital PO Box 1862 Scottsbluff, NE 69363 To whom it may concern: A year ago my wife went to your facility in Post Falls, Idaho, for a colonoscopy, something that should be covered 100% through the Affordable Care Act. When she asked if the facility was in our insurance network, the receptionist replied, "Yes". That was a lie! The facility was NOT in our network and thus we got charged over $1200.00 to which the enclosed check covers. We spent the next year battling with our insurance company and your facility to no avail. Your despicable deception results in not only us never using your facility again, but telling all our friends and posting it on social media that there are other alternatives and they should use them instead. I have had three major surgeries at NW Specialty Hospital over three years. This is a 24 bed hospital built and owned by doctors, not some money hungry conglomerate. Each nurse has, I believe, a maximum of three beds assigned to her. You can count on them responding rapidly any time you make a call for help. The hospital is extra clean, the rooms are large and comfortable. The food is out of a kitchen that is managed by a gourmet chef who, believe it or not, comes around to see if you are happy with the food and if there is anything you might want. I was on a modified clear diet all three times but had the best tomato basil soup I have ever eaten. The intake nurses actually remembered me from previous visits. I can't say enough about the hospital and find myself actually choosing doctors based on their using this hospital. I have been in 4 other hospitals and can honestly say they didn't come close to the overall experience at NW Specialty. read more
