My 77-year-old mother was admitted to Norton Hospital last year for a scheduled spinal fusion and…read morewas dead days later. We were told the surgery went well, though we later received inconsistent explanations from the surgical team. She was initially lucid after surgery but became increasingly delirious the next day. When I raised concerns, I was told it was Alzheimer's -- despite no prior history of dementia. Meanwhile, nursing staff mentioned plans to move her to rehab even as her mental status worsened. A nurse told my sister she did not know how to use the bed alarm monitor. That same day, my mother suffered an unwitnessed fall and was found on the floor. She had obstructive sleep apnea and brought her CPAP machine, which was marked as required on her bracelet. It was never used. Early the following morning, she went into cardiac arrest. The medical record notes that an initial attempt to defibrillate ventricular fibrillation was made, but the defibrillator malfunctioned. Although circulation was eventually restored, she suffered catastrophic hypoxic brain injury. We were told she was between a vegetative state and brain death, and we made the decision to withdraw life support. We understand that not every outcome is preventable. What has stayed with us is the repeated dismissal of concerns and apparent lapses in basic safeguards. We entrusted Norton with her care. I would not recommend other families do the same. Based on the other reviews here, it seems that we are not alone in our experience.

I would hate to be in the ICU and need attention. I would not recommend being on the 2nd floor with the current staff. After calling them out they act as if they have a attitude. Some healthcare settings are an automatic blood pressure raising experience from the start with the registration experience. This place is not so. I had a gentleman call me the day before my scheduled procedure and handle the majority of the preregistration over the phone. He politely advised me all that was left to do was show up at the correct time with my picture id, my insurance card, and my designated driver. DONE, 5 stars for admissions/registration After finishing with registration I walked into the next private office where the tech completed my day of procedure blood work. I can be difficult for a tech to find a vein to draw blood from so I always warn them not to worry if it takes several tries. WOW, this tech actually got it on the first try and within 5 minutes I was totally finished with labs. DONE, 5 stars for lab work I was then escorted to the correct side of the large waiting room to be called back for Prep. Two - three minutes and the nurse arrived to escort me back for surgical prep. She told my husband after I was prepped someone would come out to get him. The Prep nurses were polite, efficient, friendly and calming. One nurse recapped all my medications and allergies to make sure paperwork was complete and correct. The other nurse took all my vitals (blood pressure, temperature, etc.) They advised me I was next up for the doctor but that they would bring my husband back until it was my turn. DONE, 5 stars again It's my turn for the Cardiac Cath lab. The nurse walks me over and at the same time walks my husband to the waiting room. The nurses in the Cath lab all knew their jobs and were efficient yet friendly. My cardiologist arrived on the scene and the cath was done. After the procedure my husband was escorted into the room so the doctor could review the results with both of us together. DONE, PLUS GOOD NEWS, a definite 5 star experience. Then it was off to recovery. The nursing staff In this area obviously all like their jobs. In the hours it took to go through the recovery process they were caring, social and distinguished professionals. The three hours that require different stages in recovery all breezed past. I was given clear written discharge papers, my husband was sent to the garage for our car and I was wheeled out to meet him in front of the Rudd Heart & Lung Center. 5 stars Not that I want to frequent medical facilities, I would be treated here without hesitation if there was a need .

The next morning, I decided to have it evaluated. I heard Jewish had plastic surgeons on standby, so we drove down on a Saturday morning around 10 am. We were greeted and given papers to fill out while they copied insurance information. No more than 5 minutes later, I was called into triage. I hadn't even finished paperwork! From there, I was led back to a room where I saw a nurse immediately. Followed behind her was a very personable ER doctor who explained why lacerations are best treated earlier, but he went right to work on my injury. He talked thoroughly about wound care and after care for scarring. The nurses then fashioned a less than obvious cover for it. My husband and I could not believe how quick and thorough the process was. I'm healing well and still am amazed how thorough they run the ER at Jewish. I don't look forward to a future visit, but it will definitely be here!

My son's heart and lung issue worsened quickly, which landed us in the ER last week. And immediately, the nurses and docs that we encountered gave my son their full attention to find out what was wrong. Along with the ER, we spent time in the med surge area, the operating area and the cardiac ICU. And at each stop the nurses, docs, techs, volunteers and other staff were helpful and understanding to work with, even during the tougher moments, of which there were several. (A special shout out to nurse Kelie in the CICU and cardiologists Dr. Kim, Dr. McOmber and Dr. Black!) I was also impressed in the CICU with how well the nursing staff worked together to cover all their patients and how any nurse would help out even if they weren't the nurse assigned to you. The staff were all great with kids and with making space for parents and other caregivers. Some other quick things I learned: * There is no main entrance from the street. You have to enter the hospital via the parking garage. * If you visit anyone or have to stay, ask for a parking voucher from any desk to park free. * This hospital is way easier to find your way around, compared to others in the area. * Subway is the only restaurant or food area on site, but you can find more in Norton Hospital, accessible via the pedway. * The vending machines are located on the first, fourth and eighth floors. * If you use MyChart, the app changes if you are admitted, showing you your assigned nurse and care team members at any time. Six days later, we're now home and hopefully on a better track for him to feel better. I feel like we're going to land in the hospital again in the future, and this is definitely where we'll go for our kids.

We had asked a nurse for some help, after 5-6 minutes nobody showed up, we opened our door, and she was on her phone. The careness for their patients is limited to nothing. A nurse called us three times a day to give us updates on her progress and well-being while she was on the ventilator and in a medically-induced coma. They didn't just take care of my sister at this hospital, they took care of us as well with calls from the people caring for her and the chaplain's office. EVERYTHING sucks right now but for those of us who had it worse for month I can tell you that it isn't their job to check in on the family it was appreciated. These people are tired, they're working hard, and too many of y'all are rude, ungrateful, and going out of your way to make their job harder. They could have been jaded or looked to self-care first but they didn't. I appreciate it and so does my whole family. Not being able to see my sister would have been so much harder in the dark. ***My sister gave the appropriate HIPA release for them to do all this.
