What exactly am I paying for?…read more Seriously. I purchased a membership for lap swimming, but the reality is that members are constantly competing for access to THREE lanes. Not an entire pool. Three lanes. And apparently the expectation is that up to FOUR adults can share a single lane. Four. There was a day when a third person joined my lane and that was RIDICULOUS. Four people sharing one lap lane is not a quality swimming experience. It's overcrowding disguised as a membership benefit. Then there are the limited hours. Which I was initially fine with until everything else. There are the swim lessons and you will be removed from a lane if the instructor needs the lane you are already in. Then there is the jacuzzi, which seems to spend more time closed than open. I swim three times a week and I honestly can't remember the last time it was available. At this point, why advertise it as an amenity at all? And today I find... the facility is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for a swim meet. The only notice given was a piece of paper taped to the door. A piece of paper. In 2026. Members provide phone numbers and email addresses when signing up. Why collect that information if you're not going to communicate closures that eliminate nearly half a week's worth of access? No email. No text. No notification. Just drive over and find out when you get there. The most frustrating part is that none of these issues exist by themselves. It's the combination of all of them. Limited hours. Limited lanes. Overcrowded lanes. Frequent jacuzzi closures. Priority given elsewhere. Unexpected facility closures. Poor communication. Yet the membership price suggests you're paying for a premium aquatic facility. You're not. For less money, I can join a gym with a lap pool, a functioning jacuzzi, longer operating hours, fitness equipment, and significantly better availability. City of La Mirada wants to charge premium membership fees while delivering a consistently limited experience. The entire operation feels incredibly cheap. Cheap communication. Cheap availability. Cheap member accommodations. But somehow not cheap membership prices. If members are expected to share three overcrowded lanes, lose access for entire weekends, receive no meaningful communication, and watch amenities remain closed for weeks at a time, then management needs to answer a very simple question: What exactly are we paying for?

We came here needing to shave off about 40 seconds in his swim time for the test and he was able to do it after just one week in this program! The coaches are so caring and approachable, and they really work on giving feedback on all aspects of swimming. I could see an improvement every time we showed up to the pool. This review is for the "Mommy/Daddy and Me Session #1" which was held at the Downey High School Aquatics Center. The class was Monday - Friday, July 6 - July 17, 2015 from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. for a total of 10 sessions. Fees for residents were $55 per child and $59 for non-residents. That's basically $5.50 per class. Children were required to be older than 6-months-old but younger than 4-years-old to get in the class. To sign up, I had to enroll both of our daughters in person because their birth certificates had to be presented. This was fine since I didn't care to pay the convenience fee that applies to all online registrations. Class summary: "This class is designed to orient children to the water where they will begin to learn basic safety skills, breath control, floating, kicking and paddling. Parent or guardian must participate in the water with the child. Up to two adults per child permitted in the water." Additionally, the kiddos used life jackets, paddle boards, and squirting toys in the pool. We gathered in a circle and sang songs every once in a while. Let the kiddos sit on the wall above the pool and let them jump in "Humpty Dumpty-style." We also submerged our children's heads which I didn't think our own children would like, but they saw the older kids going (quickly) under water and did just fine. Our class started out with 15 babies/toddlers in the pool with as many or more parents. On the final day, not even half that many showed up. I think this was a bit disheartening for our instructor. Speaking of our instructor, Marissa, was great! She deserves 5 stars in her own right. She was attentive to our needs. Very courteous. Flexible - like when our youngest didn't like the life jacket she said it was fine to take it off and try something else. Nice young lady. What I liked most about Marissa, though, was she was aware of everyone in the pool around us - meaning the other classes and the kids who decided to run on the concrete just beyond the pool. Oh, and she was the only instructor who said anything to this kid who was climbing up the pole right where the canopies were. She gave a certificate of merit & a lollipop to each child after our final class. Stuff like that means all the world even to a 2-year-old. My family of four enjoyed the class. Any longer and our babies would not have handled it well. The half hour session was perfect. It was fairly chilly in the water on days that were a high of about 75 degrees Fahrenheit with a breeze. Otherwise when the temperature reached at least 90 it was nice. I'm not too privy on pool maintenance, but I don't believe it was heated. Also, I'm almost certain it is cleaned with a salt system. The reason for 3 stars is simple: The bathrooms and locker area were pretty disgusting most of the time. It's an outdoor facility, so I expected it to be mildly dirty with footprints and water splashed about. But most days the toilets were gross and the sinks and countertops were scattered with hair. Toilet paper was strung out & the bathroom stall trash cans were overflowing. Puddles of water were in various places and all along the tile where the walls met the floor. My husband said it was gross in the men's area too. I support my community no matter what, but I also know that City of Downey and Downey High Aquatics Center can do better than this. I've seen it done countless times at other places - much lesser towns than Downey. Parking can be a B to the i-t-c-h, but there's no need to drive like an ass over it - especially since high school students may be driving there too. The staff is super friendly and personable. They say hi and welcome you, which made me feel very safe and happy to be there. The men's locker room and showers are do for an upgrade and the water in the shower was freezing, or as my friend says, invigorating! I waited a bit for it to warm up with no luck. Just jumped in and jumped out as fast as possible. The pool was safe, clean, and a great place to get your swim on.

When I went, it was about a month before Halloween and they had it decorated for Halloween and the fall holidays in general, which was very fun to see. I had asked about a changing table since I have a small child and sadly they do not have a changing table, not their idea as they wanted a changing table when they remodeled the changing rooms but the city said no. (city of Bellflower if you see this, give them a changing table. In both men and women's! It is very much a necessity!!!) So even though it was possible for me to change my young child on the countertop they had I also felt very unsafe changing my wiggly child there because I was unable to strap him down. I could have changed him in a stall but no mother will want to change their child's diaper on the floor unless they know it was recently cleaned which I am sure no place has time to do constantly. (AGAIN BELLFLOWER A NECESSITY!) Outside that my son had a great time playing in the water. It was his first time in a pool and it was great. I would say I wish the water was heated for him but it isn't terrible for adults. Looking forward to going back again to play in the water.
