I work nearby but hadn't ventured to Nosh until very recently for a lunch date with my mister. I definitely will go back! Nosh has a good selection of menu offerings for even the most indecisive of orderers, including breakfast, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and smoothies. They also have coffee bar drinks. I'm a big fan of their house blend coffee. Nosh is a fast casual restaurant, so the menu board is posted right when you walk in and you order at the counter. I love that the table number signs have photos and bios of adoptable pets. Such a sweet idea. I tried the razzmatazz burger and the sweet potato fries. The burger was deliciously huge and fair warning will put you in a food coma afterward. Seriously, I just wanted to take a nap at work. I was a bit indifferent about the sweet potato fries. The people who worked there - yeah, they have "grunt jobs" - yet they take pride in their work and recognize that humans aren't necessarily best served by the fast food chains in the U.S. - and work to provide something different, creative, healthy, and tasty. With industrial decor underpinnings it reminds me of a sandwich shop decorated with inspiration from Chipolte, but the found art and bold colors adds charm. I stopped being a hipster when it became cool, but this place brings me back to my roots. The prices might even make my old hipster wallet crack a smile. The pasta salad seemed like it was missing something but the deLaca tasted clean and simple and elegant. I was amazed at the cleanliness of this place. I like the whole Mix match concept of Nosh, but I definetly do not like their customer service. It took a while Just for the older lady at the cash register to recognize we were standing there in front of her because she was too busy talking. Also, while waiting for the food, one of the servers proceeded to clean, touch her hair constantly, drink her soda then decided to bring our food with her dirty hands. Not very sanitary! ! They have so many choices to choose from! I got the chopper salad which had hard boiled eggs, candied walnuts, tomatoes, blue cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon w balsamic vinegarette and it was good! I like Nosh for it's salads. My favorite is the Try Nosher - I pretty much always get the tuna salad, egg salad and the curried couscous. I've also enjoyed the other salads on their menu. I've had a few other items, such as Maggie's Scramble, which was awesome the first time I had it and was really lacking ingredients other than eggs the second time. And I've tried Coach's Queso, which is pretty yummy but a little messy and pretty one-note in flavor. The service seems to be hit or miss, but considering it is just counter service, it hasn't bothered me that the employees are sometimes not the warmest. We took 8 people here on a Monday night and it was fantastic. So, we decided to order in a few nights later and have this restaurant deliver. Huge Mistake! We had difficulty getting them to 1) understand our location (on the Duke campus) and 2) that we wanted a Ginger Beer (both the receptionist and manager had difficulty understanding the difference between an alcoholic beverage and a soft drink made from ginger root... which is on THEIR menu). We called to have them provide 7 full meals on a Friday at 5pm. Then we were asked what time we wanted the delivery. So, we explained again, in great detail, that we had a very specific delivery window. Then we were asked how many orders were involved... again. The person on the phone told us, at that point, that they only delivered to parties of 10 or more despite a menu stating explicitly that they catered to "parties of 5 to 500". After finally agreeing to deliver our order, they told us that they had another order at 5pm and could not deliver unless it was 4:30pm or 5:30pm, neither of which would work for our specific situation. This whole discussion lasted 15 minutes. In the end we had to cancel our order, as they were neither organized enough nor communicative enough to handle what we were asking. Unfortunate, of course, because their food was enjoyable on Monday... too bad their Customer Service was so awful. read more

A last minute rescheduling landed us at Nosh for a business lunch and I must say 'Well done, Nosh!'. The parking area near the actual front of Nosh is quite limited, but there are tiers of parking lots that dribble down from the main building, so there will be a spot - just plan a few extra minutes if you're meeting someone during peak eating hours. You enter and are immediately in the ordering area. The menus are well displayed and offer breakfast ('till 3pm!), salads, burgers and sandwiches - all at a decent price point. We both opted for breakfast. I got the special: "The Slammer" and she got 'Maggie's Scramble', a large tasty looking vegetarian dish. We decided to share our sides (curried potatoes and fresh fruit) and I suggest you do the same if you have the option. There was some confusion as to where we get our water / silverware / etc., but nothing too worrying or inconvenient. It was really hoppin' too, and despite the high traffic we were able to speak at normal volume and use the wifi without issue. There are still menu items I'd like to try and if I lived closer would make it a regular spot to play, work and eat delicious food! read more

Anyway, any having heard great praises about their cupcakes, I decided to give it a shot. The icing wasn't smooth and way too sugary. It reminded me of food lion grocery frosting. The cake was too dense, and it was basically a chocolate muffin with red dye. The original red velvet cake has only a pinch of cocoa powder in it to counter balance the bitterness of the red dye. It is NOT red chocolate cake. It was a little shy of $2, so it wasn't unreasonably expensive. I will definitely come back to try their other foods though, because the service was great and the guy behind the counter was very friendly. =) read more

I used to love Nosh, but I have no idea what has happened to them lately. A number of vegetarian options and it's always nice to feel like you're not relegated to a salad on a bun. But the egg salad is fairly bland. I suppose in theory, egg salad is bland by default. But at a shop that prides itself on tasty twists, there's nothing special about it. Nosh kicks ass because they offer daily soups - one vegetarian, one non. And usually, they're pretty darn delicious. But recently, Nosh must have been off their game. I ordered delivery for the veggie soup of the day and was delivered the meat broth one by mistake. So I called, and after a bit of a hassle, they agreed to deliver the veggie one. But instead, they delivered yet another crock of the meat broth soup. So, instead of pulling them back out to my apartment, I opted to swing by once I finished lunch. But the lady at the counter refused to budge, insisting that I was mistaken. Sure, it's feasible that I cannot tell the difference between zucchini parmesan and a potato/curry/chicken/carrot soup... but in this case, having had the zucchini parmesan before and knowing the fundamental taste difference between a potato and a zucchini, I beg to differ. Oh, Nosh! Seriously? Seriously?! I once had a crazy infatuation with Nosh, but I've slowly realized that the place I once thought was special is not quite. The sandwiches are alright, and the restaurant atmosphere is refreshing while a tad oddball. But it's like most other shops in the Erwin Square center --- overpriced and lacking the flavor to justify it. And being so fond of their delivery, I have to agree with Megan M.'s review --- too often, I wind up on the phone with an agitated woman who seems annoyed that I want to give her my money in exchange for subpar food. read more

Nothing about this place stands out: bad or good. It's like Top Chef, do you want to be #1 or just get by in the middle of the pack? I've only tried the Owney's Crunchy Chicken sandwich, which again was average, not much flavor to the chicken and the slaw takes over. I was really excited about their homemade kettle chips, which I even paid extra for, but was disappointed with. The Kettle Chips brand is by far better than Nosh's. I always really REALLY wanted to like this place. It's a charming little bistro that served fun upscale sandwiches... what's not to like? But somehow the food was generally only mediocre for me. The bread for the toasted sandwiches was always a little too greasy, and the only side I really love is the homemade kettle chips (which, by the way, it's a total crock that upcharge for these --- it's freaking fried potatoes). But the redemption for this place (and the reason it gets 4 stars instead of 3) is the cookies. The cookies are to DIE for. I mostly come here for coffee when I work closeby. For that purpose, Nosh is great. I've enjoyed breakfast. I especially like their pancakes--fluffy, buttery, and served with yummy syrup. Biscuits are a good option, too. Nothing on the lunch or dinner menu has ever impressed me, however. In the 20-30 times I've been here, service has been consistently above average. I really wanted to like the food more than I did because the service and space are so nice. The people working here were super friendly and happy to be there. That matters a lot to me and is really what I liked about this place. The food, unfortunately, was a big miss for me. I have tried several things here: the Owen's crispy chicken sandwich and the deluca panini. The chicken sandwich wasn't bad but did not come on a Kaiser roll and the cheese and dijonaisse were not detectable. It did come with the slaw that I put on there but without enough cheese or condiment it was pretty dry. The deluca was described as a panini but it was doughy like a calzone. It was mostly dough and the filling was hard to get too with the undercooked calzone type wrapping. I wasn't able to eat much of either of those sandwiches, I tried the pasta salad and it was probably one of the worst I've had. It consisted of little more than some rotini with a minuscule of some substance stuck on some of the pieces. It took me a minute to even realize it was supposed to be the pasta salad. So, for me the three stars goes to the service. I do think maybe I could find a winner on the menu but it's hard to say if and when I would be back. read more

I stopped by Nosh recently on a Saturday for lunch. The location is close to Duke Hospital off of Erwin Road. When I went it was fairly crowded, but not overly so. This place looked to be a hot spot for rich college kids hailing from New York or New Jersey (aka Duke students). This was my first visit and the variety of menu items was pretty impressive. (Deli sandwiches, heated sandwiches, salads, soups, pizza, smoothies) and that's just lunch! They also serve breakfast items. After perusing the menu for a bit, I decided to get the 'Deluca'.( I felt kind of silly ordering something called a 'Deluca', but it sounded good). The nice lady took my order to go and stated with a smile "It will be just a minute". I went to the take out counter area and waited...and waited. It looked like they got slammed all at once and were trying to get out a big to go order, but this was a serious wait. They told me they were backed up (duh), and did apologize. Around 30 minutes later I finally get my Deluca sammich. It was pretty nosh-able with ham, turkey, cheese and Russian dressing in between what looked and tasted like pizza dough, very calzone-esque without the Italian ingredients. My side selection was potato salad and that made an acceptable side companion. While I was waiting I passed the time thinking about what I would write in my Yelp review and also I watched the other orders hit the counter and leave. I must say the pancakes looked pretty bangin' , and they were HUGE with bacon and fruit on the side. I think next time I might give their breakfast a go. Nosh officially gets 5-stars from me. I love this place and I finally got to eat brunch here last weekend and it was fantabulous. You have to try their "Piper's Patties" which is basically gigantic egg pancakes with yummy insides like cheese and bacon. It's super fresh and comes with flavorful curry (?) potatoes. Nosh rocks my world. I love the fact that they have free internet, free refills and that it's so low-key. They have tons of options, including rotating dinner entrees and the menu is super fresh and flavorful. Scrambled eggs, fruit, and a big buttermilk biscuit with jam were the perfect way to start my morning the other day. I felt like the portion was right on tap with what I paid for it, and the owner was really friendly. There is a lot of patio seating which is great now that the weather is starting to cool off. This is an eclectic restaurant that I come to for two reasons: brunch and carrot cake cupcakes. This place is close to Duke and has a bit of a hipster vibe. They have some unusual selections but most of what I have had here had been good. I have loved coming here for brunch, for which they have large portion sizes. Also sometimes in the afternoons I will stop by for a carrot cupcake which are as delicious as they are pretty. I always have them warm it up a little and have always enjoyed them. The staff are friendly and keep the place neat. I have never had to wait very long for my food but I also tend to come at off hours. My only cons here are it is a tad expensive here, and I do not really like the smoothies here. I have tried two or three of them and find them a bit flavorless. read more

Most of my dissertation was written on weekday mornings at the big wooden table in the back corner, while drinking lots of coffee and rocking out to 1990s jams. The free wifi network exists, but is not the most reliable (which is actually good for reading/writing!). I usually tether to my phone if I needed the internet. I was looking for a tasty lunch. I was pleasantly surprised when my friend brought me to nosh. While noshing away on my beef wrap and potato salad (pun intended) I was pleasantly surprised. The beef was surprisingly tender and the ranch dressing was nice and tangy. I was slightly disappointed by the potato salad. Compared to the wrap it was rather tasteless and just bland. I also got to sample a friend's peanut butter banana shake- which was excellent! I wanted one but couldn't bring myself to splurge. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. It was colorful with games scattered around. It would definitely be a fun place to hang out, grab a coffee and some food and play games. Maybe next time. Overall a good experience. We had a great experience at Nosh. We felt extremely welcome with our 2.5 year old in tow, and the food was excellent. Our sandwiches were well made and tasty. Because of the location in a commercial strip across from Duke's campus, I think I was expecting something chain-y and anonymous, but Nosh has the feeling of an eclectic, local restaurant. The board games, toys and books for kids are an especially welcome touch. I think I was sold on Nosh when I saw the card they give you to put on your table so they can find you with your food. Instead of just having a number, they have photos and descriptions of animals up for adoption. What a great way to use that space and help do something worthwhile for the community. read more

What can i say about NOSH .... oh, I LOVE YOU!!! Working in Durham on the ambulance, we don't get very many chances to get to eat good. Stumbled into NOSH one day just out of randomness, I'm so glad i did!! The first time i ate there was for dinner. I had the Turkey BLT ( I forget the name they call it), anyways, NOT your typical BLT. The Bacon was thick and peppered, the turkey was real turkey meat carved off the bird, the bread was nice and hearty with the perfect toast to it. I also had the kettle chips as my side, OMG! Pure heaven!!! Went back another time with my husband for breakfast and was impressed again. I had the blueberry pancakes. WOW, they were HUGE!! 3 huge pancakes with FRESH blueberries in them, I was a happy girl! My husband had the french toast, which has peanut butter, banana, and honey. So So So good as well! We had to take leftovers home with us! I love to tell all my friends about NOSH because it's a great local place to get a great meal! Keep up the great work guys!! read more

Nosh is a pretty sweet place because the service is great and the ambiance is really chill and welcoming with some character. It's a cool spot for a nice, tranquil breakfast in Durham. They also have board games to play and the cashiers are very friendly. As for the food, I ordered a chicken biscuit with some curried potatoes and a smoothie. All were good and decently priced. The potatoes went well with the chicken biscuit, which tasted fresh and wasn't too oily. The smoothie tasted yogurt-y and delicious. I ordered the resolution omelette and a biscuit, and my husband ordered the Maggie's Scramble. The scramble was HUGE and fresh, and came with perfectly seasoned potatoes. The omelette was full of veggies and Parmesan cheese, and the biscuit was large, fluffy, and perfectly buttered. I haven't really been wowed by any of their regular menu items, but I usually get their lunch/dinner special of the day, which is usually delicious (pork loin & sweet potatoes, bbq ribs, crabcake sandwich). The decor is fun (modern feel, a bench made out of skis, games scattered around to play while waiting) and the wait staff is super friendly. Nosh is adorable and delicious, and it's close to our place. There are a good number of vegetarian options, though not so many for vegans. I had the Gonzalo, which is billed as a panini but is more like a calzone or pita pocket. I'm not complaining; I'm just letting you know in case you really wanted it on sliced bread that was squished in a panini press. It came in a pocket of fluffy rosemary bread. Personally, I thought my meal was better the way it was served. It was a little rich, so I might ask them to go lighter on the cheese next time, but the combination of hummus, roasted peppers, and caramelized onions is really delicious. The curried couscous is also excellent. I think I enjoyed it more than the sandwich. It has slivered almonds, carrots, small dried fruits (currants?), and other herbs and veggies. I could eat a big bowl of the couscous by itself. I'm also a fan of the table cards that have shelter pets on them. I'm guessing that the cards have been there for long enough that those particular animals might not be at the shelter anymore, but it might encourage people to adopt a different pet. read more

They serve it all, which is probably why -- pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads, breakfast, smoothies, baked goods... Cheerful atmosphere. I liked that there was plentiful seating indoors and out. Holy biscuits, this was a delightful place. I went there in March when a group of us went to visit friend at Duke. After a late night staying up for the Hunger Games midnight screening (nerds unite!), I woke up extra famished and consequently needing an extra impressive breakfast to start the day right. It was a short walk from my friend's apartment complex, and -- HALLELUJAH -- they were serving breakfast until 3 pm on Fridays, which saved the day for myself and everyone else around me. NOSH is a bright, eclectic place located in a nice shopping/dining center by a main road. There's a respectable amount of seating indoors and out, and there's a tempting selection of board games for you to play. The staff is very friendly. Their breakfast and lunch menu isn't insanely varied, but has just enough options to keep things interesting. They have an extensive drink menu of smoothies, juices, and coffee/espresso beverages. Prices are QUITE reasonable. On our trip, I ordered an iced coffee, and one of their standard breakfast selections. You chose between bagel, toast, English muffin, or biscuit; two eggs cooked to order; bacon, ham, or turkey sausage; and either fruit or home fries. I'm a sucker for options, so I was all about this breakfast. I chose biscuit with butter and jam, sunny side up eggs, turkey sausage, and fruit. We all ordered and took a seat outside. Isn't it nice to just be completely satisfied with your food? My breakfast was wonderful. Eggs were cooked perfectly with a wonderfully oozy, hot yolk, the homemade biscuit was giant, fluffy, and so tender (the accompanying homemade strawberry jam was delicious too!), the turkey sausage was juicy, flavorful, and crackling hot, and the fruit was actually RIPE and FRESH. In gymnastics terms, a perfect 10. My companions' breakfasts were similarly wonderful -- one ordered a variation of the breakfast special I got, and one ordered a massive breakfast burrito that had me drooling. Breakfast is my life, and I could NOT have been more pleased with the one I had at NOSH. Passing through the area? New student? Visiting friends or family in Durham? I had to order last among my group of friends, not only because it was my first time, but also because nothing looked very appealing (I'm a vegetarian and a slightly picky eater). But since the line was piling up behind me, I just decided to order the Gonzalo. I asked the guy who was taking my order if he like the curry couscous better or the pasta salad (I always like to ask if I'm indecisive), and he was really cool about it and honestly said he liked the couscous, so I got that with my Gonzalo. I was pleasantly surprised by how yummy and fairly inexpensive my lunch was. I even liked the eclectic decor and the doggie tickets (instead of the boring numbers). The food is bangin'. I was surprised at how delicious my sandwich(?...it looked more like a calzone) tasted. Even the couscous was yummy. Although be warned: that Gonzalo is not a pretty sight to eat. So if you're on a date, and you don't care if strings of caramelized onions hang down your chin and you don't mind if your breath kicks with garlic, go crazy and devour that goodness.
