This was the happiest meal I had in Montreal. Quebec must have a different definition of hipster than the US, because this place was not hipster at all. The outside looks unpromising, and the inside is no better - it resembles a 1970's basement den, complete with taxidermy (hi, stuffed fox in back corner). But true hipsterdom requires that the ambiance be intentional and ironic. This was just a little lazy. Even the menu is understated, with only a few options, none of which are described in detail. At lunchtime, there were just 2 or 3 other tables occupied. I was eyeing the fried chicken sandwich and our very sweet waitress confirmed that it was her favorite, "depending on how indulgent you feel." Psh, I always feel indulgent. We also opted for a beef sandwich au jus with hot peppers. Both came with a side of fries and slaw for $3 extra. First of all, even their homemade mayo is delicious - smooth and rich. The fries are the skinnier kind, which is odd to see in a big fat frites town. Also, they give you two slaw options: NYC style (creamy) or MTL style (vinegary). Get the MTL. It has a faint Asian taste I can't identify. But it is so fresh and so good. The two versions are actually not too different in taste, but why not try something newish. Our food came after a brief wait. I don't remember the next 20 minutes clearly - I was sitting on a challah bread bun cloud, with juicy and crunchy fried chicken (boneless, dark meat, if you care) and cucumber slices all around me. Oh, it was also raining chipotle mayo. That's probably too descriptive. The sandwich was mindblowingly delicious. You may consider the fact that we walked 3 miles on empty stomachs to get here, but actually that probably made little difference. Fried chicken sandwich good. Get it. The beef sandwich was a big thing sitting in a pool of lovely au jus. I had a yummy bite of it but mostly focused on my fried chicken. I'd intended to try the matzo ball soup but am glad I didn't. There just isn't the gastric real estate. If you're looking for any old diner, you have a glut of other options (see what I did there). If you want comforting, delicious food obviously prepared fresh with thought and playfulness, in a low-key neighborhood setting, come to Nouveau Palais. The kicker is that prices are SO reasonable. Also of note is that Nouveau Palais is a 5 minute walk from both famous Montreal bagel shops (St. Viateur and Fairmount). Think ahead. Wear your stretchy pants.

The late night menu of this place (only served on Thu/Fri/Sat) keeps it simple and delicious: cheeseburgers, fries and pierogies. The selection is short but whatever you pick you'll be very happy. The restaurant is open until 3 am (again only Thu/Fri/Sat) and also serves alcohol in case you're looking for a last minute drink with your food. The service is great and the ambiance is very cozy. If you order the cheeseburger I would recommend ordering with double patty. The meat is packed with flavour and tastes very fresh, so definitely double down if u can. Both pierogies are delicious and I don't prefer one over the other. The cheese fries are very good but you don't really taste the cheese. I would surely recommend this place for anyone with a late night craving.

Trudged the few blocks through the April snow with my freshly arrived houseguest for food and drink. Its a consistent kinda burger and fries magic. Love this low key, cool diner.

Eaten here a few times now and haven't been disappointed. Walk inside and experience a bit of a time warp, the decor reminding one of Montreal days past, combined with a younger hipster twist. The burger is one of the better ones I've had in Montreal. Also tried the ricotta beignets with maple caramel sauce and they were amazing. Also came once for brunch and had a tasty chicken and waffles plate. The staff is quite kind and attentive, the dishes are solid, and you can even get a drink. They have some funny work hours sometimes so double check that they're open.

I've always been a fan of the Winneburger and their snack sized burger so visiting the actual restaurant was something that needed to be done... what I expected was a burger that would be a bit bigger than the one I was used to but that day... I met the big brother burger. Same great taste and feel to the burger in an XL format, I loved it.

Retro throwback spot complete with barstools and vinyl-covered booths. Great atmosphere and food

Honesty over good sense here. sigh. I LOVE THIS JOINT! I live in Outremont and this is my little escape when I want a solo breakfast or lunch. The waffles are otherworldly. It's the only time in my life I've ordered waffles and actually been thrilled with them. The burgers are killer and the chicken (which came with my waffle...crazy but great) was so good I ordered more as take-out to nosh on while I watched NHL playoffs later in the night. Why honesty over good sense you ask? Because the more honest I am the more business goes to this little hideaway (I haven't told my neighbours yet)...and the more business they get, the harder it becomes for little ole me to get a seat.

Pooh and I loved our drinks but for the price there should have been more alcohol and less ice. Marie wasn't crazy about her drink. She thought it was more like a cherry juice drink We shared the Calamari platter which was piping hot and had a delicious dipping sauce which Marie kept for her fries. For our main meal I ordered their Fried Chicken Salad. Pooh ordered Apollo à la Brasa, and Marie had Lobster Roll with fries and salad. I liked my salad but since it was "fried chicken " I thought the chicken would be hot. It was just warm so the skin wasn't crispy; more loose like sagging skin. Pooh loved his dish but it was a tad salty and greasy. Marie loved everything. Each of us had a Brazilian coffee which was delicious. After we shared an order of their Beignets. These beignets were huge and came with two dipping sauces: caramel and whipped Nutella. They were heavenly Service was fast and friendly and the ambiance was lively - great music too We would definitely return. I will try a different dish.

I got the big breakfast platter with potatoes, 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, bagel, and both bacon and sausage. I added some 100 percent maple and it was worth it. The pancakes are buttery and crispy, thick too; just perfect! I even broke a hot sauce bottle on accident (sorry!) and it was not an issue at all as they said "it happens", and swiftly cleaned it up. Good vibes! Highly recommend the vodka orange juice, as they fresh squeeze the OJ daily. Super yummy! They have counter space, a variety of tables, and are usually very busy, so be prepared to wait 10-15 minutes or sometimes longer. I noticed that customers are respectful and generally don't overstay here. Service is fast-paced, and it's a fresh, modern, diner experience. Highly recommend this spot!

THE BRUNCH FROM HELL Potential diners, proceed with caution…read more While visiting Montreal, I took two local friends to Beauty's Restaurant for brunch on Saturday, May 30, expecting a classic diner experience at this long-standing establishment that I have frequented for the last 10 years. Unfortunately, it turned into a complete disaster. The server was pleasant enough in the beginning when I ordered a bottle of Prosecco. She then asked my friends what they would like to drink. One ordered a cappuccino with oat milk, to which she sarcastically responded, "We're a diner; we don't do that here." He relented and ordered a cappuccino with regular milk instead. My second friend ordered a black coffee. You could tell she was not happy with us as she walked away. Several minutes later, a busser returned to the table carrying a bucket containing two unopened bottles of Prosecco. I told him, "Sorry, sir. Thank you, but I only ordered one." The confused busser walked away. Our server returned shortly thereafter and asked, "What's the problem?" I politely explained that I had only ordered one bottle, not two. She immediately became defensive, insisting that one of my friends had also ordered a bottle of Prosecco. Once again, I politely corrected her, explaining that one friend had ordered a coffee and the other a cappuccino with regular milk. She responded by pulling out her notepad and franticly flipped through her chicken-scratch writing, vigorously searching for evidence that would prove us wrong and set the record straight. She was unable to produce it. Her face turned red. Without saying a word, she abruptly grabbed one of the unopened bottles and walked away. At that precise moment, I knew we were in for the Brunch From Hell. Seven minutes passed before she returned with the coffee. The mood was tense and the atmosphere heavy. Another 25 minutes passed before the food finally arrived: a mixed green salad, a breakfast sandwich, and a smoked salmon bagel. My salmon bagel looked edible. My friend's breakfast sandwich, however, I wouldn't have fed to my dog food. These dishes were all priced between $16 and $22 before tax. Despite this, we put our heads down and ate the mediocre food. While consuming my $18 smoked salmon bagel--burnt around the edges, served on stale bread, and lacking capers or even a solitary lemon wedge--I thought to myself: if our server does the bare minimum and asks how the food is, I'll give her a 10% tip. She strategically returned about 15 minutes later, after we had finished eating. At that moment, my decision was made. I would not be tipping her. I told my friends to ask for separate bills while I stepped away to use the restroom. When I returned to the table, I was bewildered to find the server berating my friend over the amount he intended to tip. She demanded to know why he was only leaving 10%. I responded, "You really don't know why his tip is so low?" She became increasingly agitated and asked whether it was the food or the service. "Both," I replied. Her face now bright red, she snapped, "You ate all the food, so it couldn't have been the food!" I responded, "And this is how you speak to customers? You bully them into tipping more?" She fires back, "Your entitlement is outrageous. I only make $12 an hour." I repeated myself. "And this is how you speak to people? How's this working out for you? Not very well, I'm assuming." At this point, steam may as well have been coming out of her ears. She then argued, "Your friend ordered a mimosa!" To which I replied, "Mimosa is not a word that was spoken at this table." Outraged, she picked up the payment terminal and threw it down on the table in front of me. Looking at the screen, I took my time, carefully ensuring I did not tip a penny over my bill of $43.69. Growing impatient, she muttered, "Here, let me help you." Grabbing the machine aggressively, she forcefully selected the zero-tip option for me. I replied, "Thank you. That's the most helpful you've been the entire time." Taking the machine, she stormed away. The nightmare was finally over. We were free.

It's a family-owned institution that serves up warmth, tradition and is famous for pizza, smoked meat, seafood, grilled meats, salads, desserts, cheesecake, and more. Open late when most other places are closed, it's an unpretentious diner where my friends and I were glad to share some laughs, jokes with the waitstaff, and good food. We couldn't decide on what to order, so we defaulted to a poutine and a smoked meat platter with extra coleslaw. It felt like being in one of those late night diners with a large menu with lots of choices. The poutine didn't make the honour roll; it didn't fail, but I'd say it was decent and it passed. The smoked meat coming in as the valedictorian was not surprising since it's the namesake of the place. My friends prefer their smoked meat with a little bit of melt-in-your-mouth fat whereas I prefer it lean. Our waitress was kind enough to put both buttery, fatty and lean pieces on the platter so we were all happy. There was mustard ready to go at our booth table, we were ready to slather it on the rye bread. The smoked meat was warm, tender, tasty and delicious! The coleslaw also was good too with a good amount of sourness and garlic flavour. It's an alternative to Lester's, Snowdon Deli, or Schwartz's. I'd definitely return for the cozy ambiance and smoked meat.
