Beautys is a classic (Since 1942) bustling diner with amazing food, friendly atmosphere, and attentive service (four refills of their perfect coffee and I have enough energy to take on the day). I got the big breakfast platter with potatoes, 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, bagel, and both bacon and sausage. I added some 100 percent maple and it was worth it. The pancakes are buttery and crispy, thick too; just perfect! I even broke a hot sauce bottle on accident (sorry!) and it was not an issue at all as they said "it happens", and swiftly cleaned it up. Good vibes! Highly recommend the vodka orange juice, as they fresh squeeze the OJ daily. Super yummy! They have counter space, a variety of tables, and are usually very busy, so be prepared to wait 10-15 minutes or sometimes longer. I noticed that customers are respectful and generally don't overstay here. Service is fast-paced, and it's a fresh, modern, diner experience. Highly recommend this spot! read more

THE BRUNCH FROM HELL Potential diners, proceed with caution. While visiting Montreal, I took two local friends to Beauty's Restaurant for brunch on Saturday, May 30, expecting a classic diner experience at this long-standing establishment that I have frequented for the last 10 years. Unfortunately, it turned into a complete disaster. The server was pleasant enough in the beginning when I ordered a bottle of Prosecco. She then asked my friends what they would like to drink. One ordered a cappuccino with oat milk, to which she sarcastically responded, "We're a diner; we don't do that here." He relented and ordered a cappuccino with regular milk instead. My second friend ordered a black coffee. You could tell she was not happy with us as she walked away. Several minutes later, a busser returned to the table carrying a bucket containing two unopened bottles of Prosecco. I told him, "Sorry, sir. Thank you, but I only ordered one." The confused busser walked away. Our server returned shortly thereafter and asked, "What's the problem?" I politely explained that I had only ordered one bottle, not two. She immediately became defensive, insisting that one of my friends had also ordered a bottle of Prosecco. Once again, I politely corrected her, explaining that one friend had ordered a coffee and the other a cappuccino with regular milk. She responded by pulling out her notepad and franticly flipped through her chicken-scratch writing, vigorously searching for evidence that would prove us wrong and set the record straight. She was unable to produce it. Her face turned red. Without saying a word, she abruptly grabbed one of the unopened bottles and walked away. At that precise moment, I knew we were in for the Brunch From Hell. Seven minutes passed before she returned with the coffee. The mood was tense and the atmosphere heavy. Another 25 minutes passed before the food finally arrived: a mixed green salad, a breakfast sandwich, and a smoked salmon bagel. My salmon bagel looked edible. My friend's breakfast sandwich, however, I wouldn't have fed to my dog food. These dishes were all priced between $16 and $22 before tax. Despite this, we put our heads down and ate the mediocre food. While consuming my $18 smoked salmon bagel--burnt around the edges, served on stale bread, and lacking capers or even a solitary lemon wedge--I thought to myself: if our server does the bare minimum and asks how the food is, I'll give her a 10% tip. She strategically returned about 15 minutes later, after we had finished eating. At that moment, my decision was made. I would not be tipping her. I told my friends to ask for separate bills while I stepped away to use the restroom. When I returned to the table, I was bewildered to find the server berating my friend over the amount he intended to tip. She demanded to know why he was only leaving 10%. I responded, "You really don't know why his tip is so low?" She became increasingly agitated and asked whether it was the food or the service. "Both," I replied. Her face now bright red, she snapped, "You ate all the food, so it couldn't have been the food!" I responded, "And this is how you speak to customers? You bully them into tipping more?" She fires back, "Your entitlement is outrageous. I only make $12 an hour." I repeated myself. "And this is how you speak to people? How's this working out for you? Not very well, I'm assuming." At this point, steam may as well have been coming out of her ears. She then argued, "Your friend ordered a mimosa!" To which I replied, "Mimosa is not a word that was spoken at this table." Outraged, she picked up the payment terminal and threw it down on the table in front of me. Looking at the screen, I took my time, carefully ensuring I did not tip a penny over my bill of $43.69. Growing impatient, she muttered, "Here, let me help you." Grabbing the machine aggressively, she forcefully selected the zero-tip option for me. I replied, "Thank you. That's the most helpful you've been the entire time." Taking the machine, she stormed away. The nightmare was finally over. We were free. read more

Wow, the best service I have received in Montreal! Food is delicious and love the retro feel. The booth seats are reserved for parties over 3 and they won't seat you until your entire party has arrived. Got the beauty's special & rye special. Both give you a good amount of lox, cream cheese, and tomatoes. Bagel from the beauty's special was delicious. Can't believe I'm saying this but I prefer the rye special more because it really enhances the umami from the lox and the tomatoes. I never doubt my friend to pick a good spot, so when I woke up in Montreal and my friend wanted to come here for breakfast, there were no questions asked. Beautys is presenting old school standard American diner, with a twist. The twist is Montreal obviously. The menu is vast, as expected from a diner. You can do a lot of things with eggs and bread. I am not a huge breakfast person so I usually order the very standard "two eggs with meat" breakfast. Theirs wasn't too much different than other diners, but it included an excellent treat, it was served with a fresh bagel from St. Viateur, which we did visit the day before as a must stop. The rest of the breakfast was good and standard. I thought my friend's breakfast sandwich looked a little underwhelming since it wasn't served with any sides for like $13, but he seemed content. The meal was good, coffee was good, service was excellent. Our casual conversation with the server was great and definitely added to the experience. Such a bright, fun, welcoming spot to find yourself in. While it might not be a destination worthy restaurant, it's worth a visit while in Montreal for a solid breakfast. read more

Seinfeld-cosplay, with a Quebecois twist, Beautys is one of my favorite restaurants ever and most likely the best diner in the world. Beauty's was on our list while in town on essentially a Jewish food tour, and was by far the stand-out. We stepped into this out-of-the-way corner spot for a weekday lunch, and were immediately greeted by the congenial host and given, quite possibly, the best booth in the city, with a full view of the busy street corner outside. After admiring the interior, which is essentially a recreation of Mel's, we settled on lunch. To start, a tiny bottle of prosecco for her, and for me, a self-service Bloody Caesar station, with clamato, Worcestershire, a teensy bottle of absolute - the works - all served in a cute little caddy. Let's just say, it was heaven on earth. For lunch, she had the delectable omellette du fromage, while I went traditional with the tuna club, a veritable stack of all my favorite classics - egg salad and tuna salad, on rye, with a hearty helping of Montreal-style vinegar coleslaw. An experience I will never forget and an absolute must for any Jewish food lover, Beautys is a winner. read more

This place is a beloved institution in Montreal for good reason. A sun-filled diner with friendly service, a wide menu, and most importantly, excellent food. Our crew tried the egg and bacon bagel, Russian black plate (lox, tomato, cream cheese, and red onion sandwich on Russian black bread), the chopped liver sandwich on Russian black bread (comes with caramelized onions, lettuce, and tomato, and the liver seems homemade and tastes great), and the granola (really crispy, not too sweet, great with banana and yoghurt). We visited Beauty's on a Friday around 1:30. We were seated right away although they were almost full. Smaller and retro style Luncheonette. Ordered coffee for Brunch which was strong and bold. A good amount of options for breakfast and lunch. My friend ordered the Tuna Melt. Cheddar cheese and balanced tuna salad made for a tasty sandwich. I ended up ordering Mish Mash and didn't regret it. Invented here although other local breakfast spots offer it. As the name suggests, it is an Omelette with a few ingredients (Hot Dog, Salami, onions, green peppers) that work nicely together and make for a delicious Brunch entree. Not that sides are necessary but it comes with Home Fries and Bagel or Toast. Delicious and a must try! Our server, Maite, took great care of us. She talked us into having dessert. Specifically, their house made Banana bread. They warm and crisp it on the grill. We got one with chocolate chips and one sans. Tasty and not too sweet and was perfect with our coffee. Loved the ambiance of old diner feel mixed with modern vibes of MTL, overlooking the sidewalks and busy streets. Food was fresh and not greasy. I rolled in with six friends after a brutal road trip, desperate for a real sit down meal. The stylish dining room looked promising, but the food was cafeteria level. Overcooked eggs, limp bacon, dry toast, watery coffee, and a bill that felt like downtown hotel prices. We paid premium money for dishes that tasted like they had sat under heat lamps all morning. The real disaster started when we split the check. The first card went through without a tip and the server immediately groaned and asked, loud enough for the room, "No tip at all?" She repeated the performance after every tap, eye rolling and muttering so everyone could hear. Then she summoned the manager, who lectured us about how the waitress is a single mother who depends on tips to pay rent. I respect hard working staff, but humiliating guests to make up for low wages is the restaurant's responsibility, not mine. The entire dining room watched this shame fest. We left embarrassed, still hungry, and determined never to return. Montreal is full of cafés that serve real breakfasts and treat people with basic respect. Go to any of them instead. read more

A perfect breakfast on all counts. We arrived around 11am to no line and opted to sit at the counter. Our server was super friendly and attentive. We had the Santorini omelette with potatoes and a bagel and the smoked salmon and cream cheese on a bagel. The omelette was one of the best I've ever had. Every bite had filling and an excellent mix of ingredients (spinach, feta, red onion). The potatoes were so delicious as well, not greasy at all. This breakfast restaurant has been there for 80 years. Now run by the second-generation family, I can see why it continues to attract lineup. I arrived and the owner was arranging the people waiting in the lineup so everyone can get into the restaurant sooner. I even had a little bit of time to chat with the owner. I got a Beauty's Double and I almost couldn't finish it because there's so much on the plate. The interesting part is the potatoes. It's not boiled, it's not mashed. It's mashed and fried. Very cool take on that part. You can tell the staff are motivated. Even the owner pitched in to take away dirty plates. Overall a wonderful experience. read more

Unless you are known to the key waitstaff who seat you, you are treated as second class citizens. First, I was rudely brought to a booth next to several loud and annoying children. I asked to be moved and finally, begrudgingly was moved. I must say, the waitress we finally had was very sweet. However she asked us to leave eventhough there were empty booths and tables. People who knew the waitstaff or the regulars were treated in a much nicer way. I used to frequent Beauty's many years ago when I was attending McGill university. It was a nicer, kinder and mire gracious establishment. I will NEVER go to Beauty's again and will discourage anyone visiting Montreal to visit. I hadn't been to Beauty's for a while, I guess since before the fire and wow was I shocked. Beauty's is clearly just riding the coattails of their reputation with no attempt to live up to it. I was so thoroughly disappointed that I doubt that I will ever go back. We ordered that Beauty's Special and the potato latkes. The latkes seemed to be pre-made patties made mostly with filler. There was hardly any potatoes in them at all. When they arrived, one was warmish and the other was cold. As for the Beauty's Special, a cream cheese and smoked salmon sandwich served on a bagel. This use to a be a thick sandwich piled high with smoked salmon. The sandwich I received was very thick, however it was the many thick slices of tomatoes that made this sandwich so thick. In addition to the tomatoes and onions there was some cream cheese spread and one and a half paper thin slices of smoked salmon. There was so little smoked salmon in the bagel you couldn't really taste it. Overall I was tremendously disappointed in Beauty's and it was really sad to see how far, this onetime Montréal institution, had fallen. There are plenty of great restos killing themselves to provide great breakfast and brunch options around town. And although they may not have the history of a spot like Beauty's I can assure you that there are currently an endless number of better places to spend you money than Beauty's. read more

Never realized this place was here until I was doing my groceries at the provigo out front and I was waiting for my bus which is right in front of this restaurant. A cool old school brunch place! The decor is great. Only downside is it's really hot inside, it doesn't help that it's been way more humid than usual in Montreal lately. There was also flies flying around everywhere so the dining in experience wasn't great. I ordered a chocolate milkshake (good), the mac and cheese (only soso) and Adam got the salami sandwich and the blueberry milkshake (Good blueberry flavour and interesting aftertaste). This brunch place is a Montreal classic. It is a must try when living in/visiting Montreal. We arrived on a weekend at noon and were seated within 20 minutes (for a group of 4, that's pretty good). The line was not so bad considering it was a weekend and the perfect time for brunch. The hostess was super friendly and kept trying to get as many people inside the restaurant as possible to keep them warm. I ordered the salami omelette and was quite satisfied. It came with a bagel and potatoes on the side and I found it to be priced fairly reasonable for such an establishment. The bagel came out toasted and so the butter melted right on top of it. The potatoes were sort of mashed up and crisped to get some crunchy texture which I found to be amazing and very different from most brunch restaurants. As for the salami omelette, I loved it. It had enough saltiness from the salami that it did not need additional seasoning. The salami pieces were not cut up into pieces allowing you to actually taste it and size then yourself. Also, there was much more salami than I had expected but not too much that it was overpowering. Overall, delicious meal. The service, however, was alright. I found that each request I made was not received so pleasantly. For example, I requested a plate so that I can have a bite of my girlfriend's challah French toast and felt like it was a sin to do so! It did get better though. I requested some more water later on and found that our waitress made more of an effort of being more friendly. The challah French toast by the way was amazing! It was cooked perfectly and had the perfect texture that it would just melt in your mouth. The syrup was also given "on tap" which is now, unfortunately, a plus! (Some restaurants now charge for syrup...). Overall, I really loved coming here as a kid and still do love coming here as an adult. Their portions are perfect and their prices are still reasonable. Look this place really gives you that true Diner feel. Like you stepped back in time to the 1950s, and I loved it. It was great. But they sure make you pay for it. I got the MishMash omelet with potatoes and it came with (what I thought was the best part of the meal) the St. Viateur Bagel. I asked for cream cheese and that was an additional 3 bucks. I also had coffee with that. 20 bucks later I'm looking down at my food and wondering, really all this for 20 bucks. This better be delicious. And, it was ok at best. It wasn't terrible. It just wasn't great. Like I said the best part of my meal was the bagel I could down the street for 90 cents. All in all I'm not saying I would not come back here. I would. I would just order differently. My best advice, just order a bagel sandwich and enjoy. I do hope this place sticks around though. Places that hold on to history and heritage are more important than ever nowadays. read more

Smoked salmon bagels were fab and the breakfast specials were amazing. Hash browns are awesome. Sausage. Yes. Scrambled eggs are made just right. Toasted bagels come with jelly and butter. Milkshakes and smoothies were fab (I was with hungry teens!). Pancakes are a big thumbs up. I would eat just about anything off the menu. Staff was kind and helpful with dairy allergy. I stumbled upon Beauty's by happenstance when all of the restaurants I had bookmarked on Yelp were closed on New Year's Day. They do not take reservations or take your name upon arrival... you simply stand in line the old fashioned way to be seated. Naturally, it was packed, yet the wait for bar seating was only 15 minutes or so. I ordered a Bloody Mary and was served a tray with all of the fixings to assemble myself. The presentation was adorable and I actually prefer to make my own so I can load up on the horseradish and hot sauce. After a night out for New Year's Eve, we were ready for a feast and Beauty's delivered. To start, we shared a Montreal style bagel. It came with with complimentary jelly but we opted to order cream cheese. I was very excited to try this bagel considering they are known to rival New York style. The Montreal bagel was fluffy, sweet, and coated with sesame seeds. Enjoyable, but not as good as NY... sorry not sorry! For my entree, I had the bacon egg tomato and cheese sandwich which was HUGE and served on buttery garlicky toast (dare I say Texas toast?) I also ordered a side of chicken salad thinking I would combine but the chicken salad was delicious on its own.. on the sweeter side, good crunch, and a hint of dill. My dining partner had the super beauty which was basically a grand slam.. also huge. Note- certain things you have to order separately for an up charge like cream cheese and maple syrup. The service was extremely friendly. It's a family owned business that has been passed down from generation to generation. I love diners. Nothing like finding a good diner when travelling. This one was a real Beauty! An old school diner classic in Montreal. Retro look and feel, along with a menu of diner staples. People around these parts told me to get something on a bagel. They actually have pretty decent bagels in Montreal so I took their advice. Get the do it yourself Bloody Mary's and the "Beauty's Special" lox on a bagel. Thank me later. It's more than enough to satisfy. Yum! Cool and simple, and it was a lot of fun to get a tray of ingredients to build our own bloody's. I was able to squeak out a few with what they gave us. Perfect way to spend a few hours on a weekday afternoon in a classic joint chatting with the original owner Hymie and his son, the present owner Larry. This is a really neat joint. It has that old diner thing going on, that I really love. There are lots of waiters, all keeping an eye on your coffee, if you need anything else, etc. I'm from Toronto and I feel the older, family business/mom & pop places are dying out, getting replaced by new trendy joints and condos. I was really pleasantly surprised to be here in Montreal, where the smaller family businesses still exist, and this place was no exception and it felt so... home-y, so family-y. It's bustling in the diner and the waiters are joking around and from just watching how people work with one another, you can tell they like eachother's company, which is really nice to see. On to the food: I ordered the SuperBeautys 2, because I kind of felt like everything - a couple of eggs, pancakes, sausages, bacon, lovely fried potatoes, and a nice Montreal bagel (which was delicious). It was a pretty giant meal so I ended up sharing with my partner, who got a side order of eggs and a bagel cream cheese lox (also delicious), which had lovely thick and fresh slices of tomato, as well as some red onion. I'd have to say I really enjoyed the bagels, they were perfect. The potatoes were a nice touch as well because of how they were prepared - nice and fried but not dry or oily and almost mashed in some bits - really tasty! They had a dense texture which absorbed the maple syrup so well!! Ask for the bagel instead of toast. It's delicious!! Along with their freshly squeezed orange juice, they had bagels and lox which seemed to be very popular items with the locals. Decent portion size as well!! If you like chopped liver, Beauty's is the place to go. You get a scoop of chopped chicken liver, on a bed of veggies, a side of gravy, topped with clarified onions. Delicious! But Beauty's, (along with other Montreal institutions like Schwartz's), is cursed with having to live up to all the hype. Nevertheless, Beauty's offers a decent breakfast. They also make a good burger which they won't over cook if you ask for it rare. This is something most restaurants refuse to do, (citing health reasons). The line moved reasonably quickly and I was seated at the counter within about 10-15 minutes. The atmosphere was great, with an old school diner vibe and friendly service. I ordered chocolate chip waffles and eggs, bacon and home fries. My food was great, and I was absolutely stuffed full when I was finished. It was Friday at 10 and there was a line. Have been told it's a really long lineup on weekends so be prepared. I skipped it by asking for a stool at the counter. Service was friendly and efficient. Warm but barely and they seemed to be filled with a cheesy custard which was a bit too oozy and sweet for my taste. There were three of them and they were small so I was hungry a couple of hours later. Diners are my weakness. I love them. I don't know what it is. Gimme some old school nostalgic decor. Pour me a cup of joe with a saucer place. Gimme some milkshake options and standard diner grub and I'm a happy girl. Seriously though. Be still my breakfast-loving heart. This place serves soft ice cream as well. The kid in me was dying because it was socially acceptable to order a breakfast meal with ice cream. Naturally I opted for the waffle with fruit and ice cream. It was perfect. Waffle and fruit and ice cream in every bite. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right. The servings are good, big portions. Maybe its the fact that I had such a high expectation from this place. Over a year I walked by it and saw the long waiting lines during weekends. Last week I had a chance to go try it with a friend visiting from NY, Friday morning, no lines, sweet. The service was excellent, the food was great but well nothing that made me say "I MUST RE-VISIT". I was having a quick one hour meeting with a good friend of mine, we were rushed to place the order when the place was half empty. That wasn't so bad, when the food arrived, my friends smoked salmon bagel had three 1-inch slices of tomato, which was just weird. And my eggs came flooded in water and oil, and were under cooked. We were so busy in our conversation, not even finished our meal before the lady with bizarre sunglasses puts the bill on the table. I then had a moment to tell her about the food and she came out with terrible excuses of the "chef is tired" and "we never get complaints", instead of apologizing or offering to do something, she then blamed me for not saying something earlier. We hadn't even been in the restaurant 45 minutes before more staff coming up to our table and clearing our glasses of water and coffee mugs on at least two occasions. We kept saying just leave it were not finished. Honestly, since the passing of the owner. This place has turned to crap. Terrible service and that woman with sunglasses is just rude. read more
