I did not look at the reviews before attending an appointment at Nova Eye Care Center, but upon reviewing them now, I am not surprised that many express negative experiences at this office. I, too, had a negative experience, and would not recommend this office. This review is purely based on customer service. It appears the owner is very active in response, so I anticipate a response to this, and honestly just hope for some accountability. My PCP scheduled this appointment for me. NOVA Eye called to confirm my apt a few days prior to my appointment, to which I confirmed I would be attending. They said they need my insurance and I expressed I would provide it before my service, but at the time I was very busy with work. No other information or polices were discussed during that phone call or at any other time before my appointment. I received 4 texts messages confirming my appointment after that call. I attempted to yse one of the text links to add my insurance the hour before the appointment but it required a picture of my insurance card and did not have an upload function. I only had an electronic card, so I figured I would just provide my insurance at the front desk (as done at every single other doctors office I have ever been too). I arrived 15 minutes early in anticipation of doing so. Upon arriving at my appointment, I was surprised to learn that my appointment had been cancelled because I did not call and provide my insurance ahead of time (despite confirming my appointment). Karla (a front desk associate) was pleasant and expressed that this was the policy. I explained that no one communicated this to me, as I was obviously there for my appointment that I confirmed (and with insurance in hand/or the option to pay out of pocket). She rescheduled me for a later appointment, which required me to move several meetings at work. Fine ok. The appointment went fine. What was disappointing was the response I received from Doctor Jennifer Lee, upon explaining to her this situation. She acknowledged that the "admin" system will continue to send you messages as if you are confirmed, but without submitting insurance, the office will cancel your apt. This is out of fear for non-payment. I explained to her that the issue was this "policy" was never communicated to me. She proceeded to deflect blame onto me for seemingly not knowing this policy and speculated the cancellation was because I did not confirm I would pay out of pocket when the front desk confirmed my appointment. In my experience it is not uncommon to give the office your insurance at the first appointment. In my opinion, she seemed to become defensive and agitative and acted as if I was the problem. I consider this to be very bad customer service, as an apology would have totally put me at bay. It was the continued deflection and blame that made this experience so negative. Not once did she apologize for the inconvenience. Dr. Lee then left the room to get the owner for us to chat. After waiting 10minutes, the receptionist collected me to let me know the owner was with a client and I could check out. Karla (receptionist) did apologize and said she would bring it up at a staff meeting today. And that was that. I will not be returning or purchasing the "preventative" glasses recommended as, it is unclear to me whether this office is more focused on the clients, or the collections. I understand getting paid is important, and they should be rightfully paid for their services (no contest). My issue is solely with the bedside manner of Dr. Lee (ie deflection of blame) and the issues with the policy that was not communicated to me and wasted my time (and seemingly others as well). And honestly, had Dr. Lee just apologized and taken responsibility, I likely would have just moved on with my day and not wasted more of my time writing this review. read more

Dr Lee and her staff are wonderful! I appreciate feeling welcomed at the front and how they preconfirmed all my information so I didn't have to waste too much time waiting. This year was my second time come back to see Dr Lee at Nova Eye Care Center. I used to see her at another practice in Merrifield and just had to follow her to her new place. This time, I brought my six year old son with me and they were very accommodating to doing our exams concurrently so I could stay with him the whole time. We were able to get a copy of our prescription immediately (not the case at other practices) and we're not pressured to buy our glasses from their selection. My only concern (just cause of covid) was that the front area seems a little tight for the multiple staff members and customer. read more

I have read some of the negative reviews and am quite surprised. I called this morning with an eye issue that did not require an ophthalmologist but was beyond a Family Doctor. They got me in within 2 hrs of my call with Dr. Lee. Front Desk staff were very polite as were the Technicians. Dr. Lee was great. Very professional with an very upbeat and pleasant (dare I say fun?) personality. I don't render praise easily, but this write up is well deserved. As a side note, the fact that the Practice's Senior Doctor takes thee time to respond to every complaint lends credibility to the Practice as a whole. read more

I would strongly recommend avoiding this practice due to shady billing practices, which is something others seem to have noted in their reviews.  Short version: during a vision exam in 2018, the doctor touched the front of my eye with a swab, allegedly to remove an eyelash. I had not asked for this procedure nor would I have agreed to it for any kind of fee---not only did it take about 5 seconds, but I'm perfectly capable of getting an eyelash off the front of my eye by myself. Nova Eyecare Center proceeded to charge me and my insurance *hundreds* of dollars for this event, claiming that they had performed a "foreign object removal." I complained and they agreed that they would not attempt to collect on the remaining fee. Nonetheless, they sent it to collections 2 years later. I'd recommend avoiding them if at all possible.  *** Longer version: I went in for a contact exam a few years ago. During the procedure, the doctor turned around, came back with a cotton swab, and, without saying what exactly it was that she was trying to accomplish, touched it to the front of my eye. She then said there was "an eyelash," and proceeded with the exam. In all, the event took about 5 seconds.  Later, I received a statement of benefits showing that Nova Eyecare Center had billed my insurance $300 for a "foreign object removal." The insurer literally coded it as a surgery. It took me a while to figure out what this could possibly be---given that it was such a minor event (and because I didn't ask for any such service) it didn't immediately come to mind. Unfortunately, my insurance had no way of knowing these facts and had already paid them ~$150 for the "removal." The kicker was that, having already been paid ~$150 for an unrequested 5 second "procedure" that I could have done on my own, I was expected to pay them another $150! I called to complain and, while they refused to formally waive the fee, they agreed that they would not send the bill to collections even if I did not pay it, which I told them I would not do. I confirmed this and gave the matter up. Last week, over two years after my original visit, I received a collections letter and a call threatening to knock my credit score over the remaining fee. I called the office again and was told that it had been too long for them to know what really happened and that they would not pull the fee back from collections. In the end, not only did they hit me with an exorbitant bill for an unnecessary and unrequested procedure that I could have done myself in a matter of seconds, they then lied to me about not sending the bill to collections. This seems to be one of those places that will try to nickel and dime you for things no sane person would think justify a separate charge (though maybe "nickel and dime" is the wrong phrase when the charge is hundreds of dollars). Avoid. *Update* Having reviewed the company's response, I still haven't the faintest idea why anyone would think that the procedure described above was "medically necessary" or that $300 is a remotely reasonable fee for it. read more

Better than the chain stores. I've used pretty much all the chain stores over the years (LensCrafters, MyEyeDr, America's Best, etc) and haven't ever been thrilled. The doctors usually either don't seem to care and/or don't seem competent. The glasses people always seem super pushy and the quality of the product is always "meh". I've been coming to Nova Eye Care for a few years now and it's consistently better than my chain store experiences (although more expensive...get what you pay for!). The doctors know what they are doing and seem to actually like their job, the front office folks are friendly and helpful without being pushy, and the glasses selection has a lot of stuff that I've never even seen before. I'll take this over the chain store experience any day, even though it costs a bit more. read more

Avoid! I called and made an appointment after finding them on my insurance providers page. They don't have any earlier appointments than 9am. They also asked me to send in a picture of my insurance card and sent me a questionnaire that took 15 minutes to fill out with my entire vision history and medical insurance information. For my appointment I arrived at 8:50am and wasn't seen until 9:20. Part of that delay was confirming my insurance, which should have been done already? They told me they had provided the approved list of contact lenses to the doctor. The actual exam went ok, I told the doctor I didn't want dailies and preferred my 30 day night and day. He gave me daily samples anyways. I checked out and honestly didn't pay enough attention to the cost at check out because I was trying to schedule my follow up for dilation. The women at the front desk took the doctors words of "within two weeks" to mean scheduling me for a month out despite me trying to explain what within meant. This also meant I missed when they charged me $90 at check out instead of the $10 my insurance would have required. I sent an email asking for a receipt and the explanation for the cost once I saw my statement. They called and left a message saying I had accepted samples that were not on my insurance list, the dailies (5 days worth) had cost me $80. After a few emails and calls I finally got someone to acknowledge they had made a mistake and they would refund me. They also helped me schedule my dilation in a reasonable window, my samples had expired and I would need an appointment sooner than later. The follow up appointment went fine but I have yet to receive my refund, it's been 9 days so far and a month since my original appointment. I don't have a lot of hope. read more

Update: the investigation shows they actually billed my health and vision insurance, two different companies, for the same eye exam on the same date. Yikes. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure double billing is a problem. Went in for routine annual exams for glasses and contacts. Costs $60 through my vision insurance. I specifically told the front desk I didn't want anything that isn't included in that. I told the doctor I have dry eyes and so I'd prefer contacts that account for this. She proceeded to give me eye drops and continued with the exam. Well, apparently the eye drops were $175 and billed through my medical insurance. I never gave consent because I knew I have a high deductible insurance, but of course, her office disagrees and insists it's my bill to pay. We don't go into grocery stores and have surprise charges, so why is that the case here? I should have taken these other Yelp reviews into account; clearly this is how this office operates - with fake, fraudulent charges. Not okay, and I will not be paying. I've submitted complaints for the Virginia Department of Health Professions along with my health insurance. I guess they weren't looking for a repeat customer here, because without an apology and removing this from my account, I won't be coming back. I've never posted to Yelp before, but I sincerely hope this helps someone find a different eye doctor. Trust the reviews and learn from my mistake. read more

I was pretty happy about my experience here. Dr. Vu's office is right next to the Sear's optics, but you enter through a small door from outside. I got an eye exam and a contact fitting since this is my first time using contacts. Here is a list of things that I liked about her office: 1). One of the common complaint about optometrists at some of the large chain stores is that they act too much like a sales person. Dr. Vu's office doesn't sell glasses or contacts, so there is no pressure to buy. 2). Her office is really small and she's the only one working right now. You will get more personal attention here than one of those large clinic own by an association of optometrists with a dozen assistants and a separate billing department. 3). She is a young doctor, who is still trying to establish her patient base. She is well connected electronically (facebook, email, twitter). Setting up an appointment online was easy. The only change the clinic needs right now is to have a receptionist to do the mundane stuff like answering the phone and filing paperworks. read more

I've been doing my annual eye exam with Dr. Kelly for a few years now- and while the visit has been standard, the billing always seemed to be a nuisance. I'd do a co-pay but somehow always end up with a bill mailed to me home for a tad more (some that turned out justified but was still billed incorrectly), which seems to be the only place that happens for all my usual annual medical check up exams. Despite this, and being too lazy to switch since it was just $10 - $25 off, I was going to sign up my partner to come here since he was now under my (new) company insurance and there were appointment available with the new Dr. I put in the general information for service provider and my member ID in their online appointment form, only to get a call that since we're an HMO, we needed a doc to refer us for an annual eye exam prior to the appointment or else they would bill as a medical visit! I told the rep that I have paid for vision insurance and it should not be billed as medical-- I call and verify with my HR that this is not the case. After knowing that I'd probably be randomly billed incorrectly (but who knows how much since they now think its a medical billing), I finally decided to look for new eye doctor in the area. They were able to schedule an appointment and simply asked for my insurance card and phone number. So essentially rather than getting a new patient, they have also lost an old one. I read the other yelp reviews prior to posting mine, and it seems like there's something wrong with their payment billing system that they don't have a good way to fix themselves, but just an explanation. I appreciate their attempt to be more thorough prior to a visit and obtaining the info, but whatever process they put in place, it was more of a hassle since they didn't ask the right information - so that my partner asked me to cancel the appointment instead. So, we are going to check out another doctor to see if they have the same issue and hope I don't get random bills in my mail like I did from NOVA eye care. read more

Best eye doctor I've had. Been coming here consistently for 4 years now! This is the relocated location (from Landmark Mall) on the second floor. These are the pluses that make this place stand out: (1) convenient location---if you come with a buddy or family member he or she will have plenty of places nearby to eat, including Subway, Baja Fresh, Noodles & Co., and Panera Bread, and Starbucks. Just be aware that the shopping center has very limited parking. (2) easy scheduling---I never have to wait a long time to make an appointment. It's fast, appointment times are aplenty, and cancellation is easy, and they are very understandable. Last week I had to cancel an appointment because I needed to go to urgent care, so I was able to reschedule for this week, same time, so I was quite pleased. (3) clean, pleasant office--this office is bigger than its previous one, and I admire a doctor who takes pride in the appearance and look of the waiting area. (4) short wait for doctor--I never have to wait a long time for my scheduled appointment. The doctor is thorough and diligent and keenly aware of appointment times, which helps my often hectic and busy schedule. (5) courteous staff--always friendly, understanding, and accommodating. Multiple insurances are accepted, and getting all the initial forms completed is easy peasy. (6) dr. vu is certainly calm, congenial, and caring. Eye exams are comprehensive, unrushed, and addresses all my vision-related concerns. Even though I've moved to DC, I still drive 30 min to visit this eye doctor. (7) e-mail, phone, and text reminders for appointments--to facilitate communication. I'm glad their tech-savvy and forward-thinking. I had PRK about ten years ago and I noticed that my vision had started going recently to get a checkup. After a quick reminder about how important it is to get regular checkups they started the process. It was quick and painless and everybody was super nice and helpful to answer all my questions along the way. I originally wanted to see if contacts were a good fit, but Dr. Reynolds-Temple informed me of the difficultly of fitting contacts post PRK. She suggested that I try glasses for a bit, and she would be willing to work with me on the process if I really wanted them. I really appreciated the honest advice and the friendly attitude. It was a great visit and I appreciated not being pressured to get glasses at their in house shop. It would be a nice convenience, but it can get expensive, especially given the online options out there. read more

Purchased glasses. Insurance covered a portion and I paid the balance owed when the glasses were delivered, no problem. Two and half months later I get a bill claiming I owe additional money for the glasses. I call and after some run around I am told the staff made a mistake and did not collect the correct amount. I suggested it was their mistake, I paid what was previously said to be owed and that I should not receive a bill months after service with no explanation. As a follow up to my original review. I left a request that Dr. Kelly give me a call at any time that was convenient for her. I wanted to see if there was some way that the entirely incorrect, totally wrong, completely non-helpful lenses for which I paid $1750 could be corrected so that I would get at least some value for the money I spent. That was almost a month ago and I'm still waiting. I could have done more good with that $1750 by donating it to some needy organization. I made an appointment at my "old" optometrist, was there for over an hour, had a complete eye exam, had a complete fitting for new lenses, and the total was over $400 less. Bottom line up front---Great people and great service! I had Lasik several years ago, but my age is catching up with me, and I needed a checkup, since it had been over 15 years since I had an exam. I called and they fit me into the schedule the same day, and from the staff all the way to Dr. Kelly, everyone is top notch! There was a very exhaustive process, and then Dr, Kelly spent some time explaining the way ahead and some additional tests she suggested based on my age (ouch!). There is a limited selection of eyewear, and if insurance does not cover it, it can be quite pricey, but their service is so good I went ahead and ordered a pair of Oakley eyeglasses, and they should be done next week. AVOID at all costs! This place is the most unprofessional and unorganized business I've encountered. I stopped going there years ago, yet received a collections notice for a small amount of money for a service they claim I had in 2011. 9 YEARS AGO! When I called the office, the said that the agency had the wrong info and it was from 2015 and they also provided me a different amount that they claim I owe. They have never attempted to send me an invoice, call or email me, but now suddenly say I owe them $79. Instead of returning my phone call, they took the easy route and emailed me, not even knowing if I had the same email. It's totally unprofessional to put someone in collections but yet provide the agency false information. They are clearly desperate for business or money if they are providing credit agencies with inaccurate information to try to collect on. Had an annual eye exam. The Dr. Schermer was nice, however my eye exam felt a little rushed and my prescription came out as if my eyes got better even though my vision is worse than my last exam. The selection of glasses seems limited. I waited 2 weeks for my glases to arrive. I picked them up Saturday, by Monday I went to put them on the lens had split in multiple places. Not due to a drop or mishandling. the lens simply started splitting from putting them on and off. I called, they don't do refunds. they said they will keep replacing the cheap lenses at no cost for a year. Not only are the lenses cheap after I paid for the more expensive polycarmobate ones, they also are impossible to clean ( smudges will not come off) and are just terrible overall. the office doesn't even offer leans cleaning solution.... I actually came here because i was looking for a new eye doctor and was impressed with the great yelp reviews on dr vu. However, I've had an awful experience here. I ordered hard contacts from her more than 2 months ago and still don't have my lenses. Ive been to her office at least 6 times already, all without success. Time one: receptionist calls, says my lenses are in, and I can come in anytime to pick them up. I asked if I needed an appointment, and she said no. I went in that weekend, only to be told dr vu was not in the office and the contacts were with her. She would also not be in next weekend. (my work schedule makes it impossible to come in before they close t 6 pm during the week). I was frustrated, because I had specifically asked if I needed to schedule something, and had been told no. Time 2 - I call ahead to ensure she's in the office, and am told she is, and to come in anytime. When i go in later that day, she cannot find the lenses she ordered for me. She says that they're in another one of her bags, which she must have forgotten at home. Another wasted trip for me. Time 3: I go in, she has my lenses, tries them on, and says they don't fit my eyes right, so must be sent back to the lab. This may not be her fault, but this is the third time I leave her office without lenses. Time 4: she says my contacts are back from the lab, and should fit. I try them on and everything is incredibly blurry. I can't read the biggest line on the chart, much less see two feet in front of me. I ask if they switched the rx for the right and left eyes, she checks and they haven't, but they're clearly completely wrong. She cannot find the lenses I tried last week, which I could see out of, even if they didn't sit on my eyes perfectly. I leave again with nothing. Time 5 - she calls back because she's found the contacts and asks me to come back so she can reassess. She sends me home with these but says she will re order them so that they fit. I wear these for one day, and end up with a headache by afternoon because my vision is blurry. Back to wearing my original contacts. Time 6: should there even be a time 6?! How ridiculous is this?? I schedule an appointment for 1230. It is now 1:30 and I'm still sitting here, with at least 2 other people ahead of me. How much time have I cumulatively wasted here in the last 2 months?? Dr vu is not here, so another doctor will see me. UPDATE: finally received my lenses, but not after the second doctor telling me at first that she didn't know if they had been re-ordered and couldn't find them anywhere... If you have other options, I'd go elsewhere. Not much in the way of apologies or any gestures to acknowledge the inconvenience of the whole experience, either! I had come here for a general eye exam with my wife which was covered by our healthcare. Since my wife has contacts they decided to do a separate eye exam and did not tell us there would be a fee for that. As we were getting ready to leave they told us there was a payment for her exam because she wears contacts. We didn't mind paying but had they just told us what services they were going to provide and charge for we would have been comfortable. Second, I called them to release my records to me for my other doctor would like to examine the results. They told me there is a fee for $.50 per page, or $10 fee to email them to you. WTF?! I brought my business to you, paid you fair and square for the services you provided, and now you are going to charge me for MY RESULTS?? They tell me thats the normal practice. I had my previous doctor provide me my results just the week before without charging me a penny, and with a smile because they know this is a cheap and sleazy way to make a few extra bucks and you will loose business. Needless to say just after my first eye exam with them I am paying for my records and going somewhere else. She's nice, young, cool, and very very very thorough! Eye disease runs in my family, so she took the time to run an extra (different than normal for me) glaucoma test. I went here because they had a good review in Yelp. However, I had an awful experience with them. Be very careful to go to this place. The Doctor advised my son to start wearing glasses. But I felt that the Doctor was really making him read letters that are way too small. She was also treating my child like an adult, no patience nor effort to work with a kid. So I am not comfortable with this. This place is all about business not really about building lasting client relationship. They will not really help nor advise you when picking a pair of glasses especially for kids. I feel that their staff are hired to be ignorant in helping you to pick the right frames so that they can get the 30% re-stocking fee!! I paid almost $100 for nothing!! I just went to Dr. Vu for the first time and really liked her. She is young and seems very knowledgeable, professional and sweet. The physical office is tucked away, seemingly as an afterthought, in the back corner of the building, next to Sears Optical Department at Landmark Mall (it's very near the pickup area/covered parking). It is a really small office (and waiting room) and is truly a one person/doctor show. On the day I was there, her receptionist was out and Dr. Vu handled all of the new patient paperwork. I mean, how many doctors could you find who are willing/able to do the front office work? That in itself told me a lot about her down-to-earth personality. Kudos to her for that. Her office does not sell glasses so there is no hard sell from that quarter. But that does mean a trip elsewhere to get glasses, if needed. There was also no hard sell on treatments I may or may not need, that was highly appreciated. I will definitely use her again for any eye related needs and highly recommend her. read more

They had every opportunity to apologize for delay and make it right but instead I had to deal with bad attitudes and a couldn't care less demeanor. Horrible customer service. Won't be returning. This eye clinic is one of the worst in Alexandria area. I had an appointment with Dr. Reynolds but the prescription was not correct and I had headaches after using the glasses. So they scheduled me with Dr. Kelly for the next visit. During the eye exam I told Dr. Kelly that I cannot see the exam chart clearly and she told me that she does not know why!! I've been going to Dr. Kelly since she was Dr. Vu at Sears. She was very good, thorough and patient. That's why I stayed with her. In the past few years, things have changed. The office is dirty and cluttered with supplies. The front office people have trouble focusing on details. I really like this little eye shop. The exam seemed very thorough and I really liked that they alcohol-wiped everything down before I used it to show that it was sterile. I saw Dr. Kelly and she did a great job explaining that my Rx had only changed 0.25 so it was up to me if I wanted new glasses or not. There was not any pressure to buy new glasses on the spot which is great since I would want my wife's opinion anyhow. The front office staff were very nice and helpful with insurance information, too. I'd definitely recommend this place - even though it had been 6 years since my last eye visit, I'll be coming back to see Dr. Kelly annually. And it was a breeze scheduling an appointment through their website email. Dr. Reynolds ran me off from this practice. She put nasty things about me in my appointment notes after I requested a copy of my records to get a second opinion from another doctor. As a patient, I have the right to get a second opinion and I should be free to do so without having notes in my records that would lead another doctor to believe that I am a problematic patient (which I am not). read more

After going a few years without updating my prescription, I realized that things were much blurrier than I remembered them being and figured it was time to fix that. Driving at night became a little adventurous unless I tilted my glasses forward on my face to increase the effective refraction, which just looked silly. I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Kelly to get new glasses. In general, the appointment booking (I called in) and exam process was a breeze, and they even emailed appointment reminders/confirmations before the day-of. While everything was great on their end, I'm sure they thought opposite of me since apparently my eyes are sensitive AF to changes. I basically had to go back 3 or 4 times to figure out why the new glasses I got were still straining my eyes (my eyes are finicky, not NECC's fault). Dr. Kelly and the staff were extremely patient with re-examining the glasses on me and submitting the changes so I could get the updated pair(s) quickly, and made sure the final iteration were perfect for my eyes. I'm sure most places would have been super annoyed after the second re-visit, but Dr. Kelly and co were awesome and accommodating! Only annoying thing is that, for HSA/FSA purposes, their credit card scanners are set to a health care designation versus vision care, so I have to go through some weird reimbursement and re-charge process with my insurance. But for the service provided by this team, I don't mind a bit! read more

Very pleased! Dr. Kelly is very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. Appointments were no hassle. Staff printed and emailed scripts. Dr. Kelly pointed out that I was over-wearing my contacts, saw that the new glasses and contact prescriptions would be inaccurate, so she gave my drops and without hesitation made time for a second a appointment at np charge. My old eye doctor had also done the same, but I am still very grateful for the generosity with her time and dedication to getting me the best prescription. Thank you! read more
