My boyfriend and I were out on a mission, looking for engagement rings, and this was our first stop. Novak Jewelers is located in a brand new shopping mall on Clayton Rd., fairly close to Hwy 141. Upon entering their shop, you sense an immediate feeling of intimacy and warmth. While their jewelry selections are smaller than other stores, the quality and uniqueness of the individual items are what makes Novak Jewelers different from anywhere else. I didn't want an engagement ring that looked like everyone else's. I wanted something different. We were greeting by Greg's daughter and I immediately explained what we were looking for, what we had to work with (including a family heirloom ring), and several photos from Pinterest that I had saved. I just bought an engagement ring a few weeks ago from Novak, and here are my observations: - There are A LOT of jewelers in the St. Louis area -- part of the challenge is culling out style vs. substance, as well as actual reputation. Novak Jewelers is a clean, elegant store -- certainly not overbearing in its style -- and possess plenty of substance (more on that later). Only a few reviews of Novak exist online -- all of which were positive -- so it passed the initial "reputation" screen for me. - The impression I had of Greg Novak (owner) was immediately positive. Straight-talking, down-to-earth, patient, and honest -- those adjectives came to mind upon meeting him. At no point did he ever pressure me (if anything, I worried about pressuring him), and my initial impressions were confirmed throughout the purchasing process. - Novak was the only jeweler (out of several) who actually 1) listened to my initial requests on diamonds; and 2) followed through immediately without additional prompting or delay. Within a few days of initial contact, Greg called back to tell me of a few diamonds he received that seemed to match my specs. When those didn't work out (including one he nixed himself), he said he would look again. Voila -- in a few days, he called again, stating he found one he really liked. (This turned out to be THE ONE for me.) - His pricing was competitive. At no point were there wild fluctuations in retail prices (the slick "It sells at X dollars, but for *you* I can discount it to Y dollars" was NOT in Novak's repertoire.) What Greg stated was what he charged, and I got the sense that he trimmed his profit margin significantly in some areas to ensure the sale. - Greg's technical skills were excellent. I found out that he has nearly 40 years of experience working with jewels. He's a "bench guy" by training (as opposed to a "designer" who owns the store, but sends out everything to have it customized). Looking at my request for a custom ring, he expressed confidence he could construct it himself (for much cheaper than sending it out). He was 100% right: the final product was exactly what we wanted. (FYI: Despite my overwhelmingly glowing review, I assure you that I am in no way affiliated with Novak Jewelers. I am simply a very satisfied customer who found Novak through the dint of hard work and good fortune -- may this review make the process just a little bit easier for you! Whether it is a simple repair or coming in to browse the selection of invitingly-arrayed baubles, my experiences at the family-run Novak Jewelers have always been top notch. I have gotten a few pieces from here over the years and even when I am not in buying mode, they are willing to go above and beyond, from installing a new watch battery to a less-routine repair of a necklace. My husband and I have been customers since we got engaged in 2004. Much to our chagrin, we started out with a different jeweler who was slick and sleazy, did not listen to what we wanted, and managed to produce a ring that was exactly the opposite of what I told him I was looking for. We were directed to Novak by my husband's sister-in-law, thank goodness. Greg restyled my ring exactly to my specifications, and helped us find wedding bands we liked. In the past 8 years, we've never set foot in another jeweler. I go to Novak, less often than I should, to have my rings cleaned and checked for loose prongs. I've taken family jewelry in to make sure it is in good enough shape to wear (and had a pearl necklace restrung b/c it was not holding up well), and had pendants that I bought in Guatemala engraved for my bridal party. My husband goes there to buy me little trinkets. He has pretty good taste, so he usually has a rough design in mind and he and Greg flesh it out. I have never been disappointed! Greg, his wife, and their kids are salt-of-the-earth people. You can trust them to take care of your jewelry, find or make almost anything you want, and always give you a fair price. Plus, they are friendly and have remembered our names and personal details about us since we started patronizing their business 8 years ago. We highly recommend Novak! p.s. I have made many purchases at Novak Jewelers for gifts as well as for myself over the past 15+ years and have always enjoyed the personal service and attention given by owner Greg and his wife, as well as their daughter. I have compared prices at many different jewelry stores and I am amazed at the amount of $$ people pay in the mall for jewelry that, in my opinion, is very common and lacking in quality and originality! I took my engagement ring to be sized. It was done very quickly. After hearing some horror stories about different jewelers switching out diamonds, I was concerned about not getting my same diamond back. Novak's let me look at the diamond under loupes and identify markers on my diamond before and after it was sized to ease my concerns. Thank you! read more

This gentleman really knows his stuff! My wife and I went in to have three rings soldered together to form one ring. The rings were an odd shape but he crafted them together masterfully! Greg met us and greeted us personally each of the three times we visited his shop. He also showed us the newly forged rings to ensure we were satisfied which came back to us looking better than new. Novak Jewelers are the real deal. Greg custom makes anything you want that will fit your budget, does it well, and pretty quickly, too. As opposed to a mall jeweler or a jeweler with a big free-standing store designed for volume, Greg takes his time with you and will educate you on any aspect of jewelry that he keeps in the store or anything you can think of, and I can guarantee you'll get the most "bang for the buck" by going to Novak. Wherever you live in town, it's worth the drive, and don't believe "sale" ads from other jewelers. Talk to Greg first. I'll never go anywhere else for jewelry.
