I was craving Taiwanese fan Tuan but this place doesn't really have the Taiwanese flavor. There's a wide variety of rice roll flavors and different sauces you can pick. I liked the use of the purple rice and the filling flavor is not bad. However, the ratio of rice and filling was quite disappointing, the first few bites and the last few bites were all just rice. The filling was just in the center and the rice by itself is quite plain. I was disappointed there wasn't fried dough (you tiao) inside the rice roll despite the descriptions, instead there were small fried pieces kind of like the stuff you'll see as a poke topping. The size was also smaller than I expected. Overall, I would say it's not bad for a snack but the flavor doesn't fix my Taiwanese fan Tuan itch. read more

I ordered take out about a week ago from this place. I got 2 eel rolls, 1 shrimp roll, and 1 pork roll. The eel ones seemed to make bones inside it as I felt something sharp when I ate it. As for the shrimp rolls, it tastes good, but there is not enough shrimp. It seemed like they took a shrimp, boiled it, and cut it in half and added it to the roll. I've tried Nuan Xin Rice Roll once before, via Uber Eats delivery, and didn't like it, but my dad really enjoys their rice rolls. He's tried their Beef and Eel Rice Rolls from the Eldridge Street, Chinatown location, and loves the eel one in particular. Since my sister and I were in the area, we decided to stop by and buy an Eel Rice Roll home for him, which he completely devoured. Their rice rolls are huge, hefty, and packed with ingredients-- just one is incredibly filling, so you definitely get the best bang for your buck. Pretty decent rice rolls! For the price and the amount of food (mainly rice) but considerable amount of filling, it makes a good snack or a meal. Got to try the chicken, crabmeat and shrimp rice rolls and all of them were pretty tasty. I think one of the fillings they use is preserved daikon or carrots- either way, I think its this that makes the roll stand out, otherwise I can see how it can be bland without using additional sauces. My office has ordered from this restaurant a couple of times and both times even though I desperately wanted to like them, both times have been pretty mediocre to average unfortunately. What I have tried: --WATERMELON JUICE WUTH CREAM TOPPING: Light watermelon juice with a delicious cream topping. The juice is not too sweet which is nice. As for the rice rolls the fillings are pretty good; however, the ratio of the rice and filling is pretty disappointing. There needs to be more filling than what you are given. Additionally, for the fillings make sure you add sauce as well - because that helps to flavor the rice better and helps improve the ratio of rice to toppings. I have tried the braised pork with preserved veggies, eel and the black pepper beef rice rolls. The braised pork one is my favorite one. The fatty pieces of pork really added a nice texture in conjunction with the crunchy veggies. The eel could have used slightly more flavor and was really not that much for a roll. I did really like the black pepper flavor as well but again was not enough filling. All of the rice rolls also come with lettuce and Mayo which though not traditional is a nice addition to the fillings. All in all, a fairly average non traditional rice roll store but with some yummy juices read more

It was a bad mix. Yes, it's super convenient to get and hold since it doesn't fall apart. I love the prices and packaging but I won't be coming here again. Going into this I thought it would be reminiscent of a fan tuan from Taiwan but it wasn't. The flavors just didn't go well together. The bland rice flavor overrode what little flavor from the pork floss and duck I could get. There was also unnecessary sauce in it (the ones from Taiwan don't have any sauce on theirs). I'm not a mayo person and it tasted like mayo so I literally just threw it back up. Mind you, the duck rice roll is one of their popular ones. The same can be said about the cheesy crab meat rice roll. The cheese was really weird. It was like watery cheese- not even melted cheese. I am a big fan of this place because I love the ice rice here (冰饭). It is a sweet, dessert with rice and different toppings like boba, jelly, watermelon, peanuts and more. It is very popular in Asia. It is super refreshing in the summer to try and this is one place that does it well and has reasonable prices. I have been here so many times and still would go back. The fan tuan is also very good. I use to go to this chain/franchise on 51st Street, but that one closed down. This chain has been popping up everywhere, but they keep closing locations and opening up trying to find the perfect spot to open, so it's getting confusing and hard to keep up with. The one on 97 Elizabeth Street in Chinatown recently closed, but they have one near that location at 67 Eldridge. I'm glad they at least kept this location open on 8th Avenue since they closed the one on 51st Street. The service is good, no complaints. It's a quick order-and-go type of place. Overall, Nuan Xin Rice Roll is a great, grab-and-go, quick snack type of place. I've never had an issue with their food and it has always been delicious and up to par. I think, the rice roll idea is pretty unique and fun, but that's pretty much the only thing I'd purchase here. There are too many drink options in the area competing. read more

After seeing this chain pop up in my favorite foodtubers' videos, this store has been on my radar for a while now. Alas, I had a chance to visit. The store was small, more of an order-and-go. The staff practiced COVID-19 protocols, and were super respectful! I ordered a Duck Rice Roll ($4.50). Food aside, the presentation was so neat! The brown bag and wrapper covering the food were both made of such sturdy material. Even the rice roll was tucked neatly, with no fuss or messiness upon unraveling. It was also quite big so you know just one is going to be filling. The first couple bites, it tasted no different from a sushi burrito. But I soon started to taste the subtle sweetness of the purple sticky rice. Inside had cabbage, duck pieces (including skin), pickled veggies, and shredded pork jerky. I never had such a concoction before! While it tasted alright at first, the mayo AND sticky rice became too heavy for me, that I had trouble finishing. This is a rice roll spot in Brooklyn's Chinatown. There's another location about 7-8 blocks down, on the same avenue. This spot on 59th street is tiny! For such a small operation, they have a decent sized menu with plenty of fillings for their rice rolls, as well as, a good sized drink menu. I ordered a rice roll with duck and a purple rice milk tea drink. Rice roll was reasonably priced and was a good size too. I really liked the duck meat as a filling; I thought it was moist and quite tasty. Purple rice had a nice flavor and texture as well! That purple rice milk tea was pretty bland. Because the drink was cold, the purple rice kernels was quite hard and crunchy. The milk tea was quite watered down and tasteless. As I sat inside, I noticed most people would call ahead, place their order and bounce. Overall, the rice roll was definitely yummy and worth trying. I just wish they'd open up a location in Flushing. after i tried this place 2 summers ago, i found myself craving their rice rolls way too often. i love how they use purple rice, and i've never been disappointed with any of my orders from here. -they're available for delivery on grubhub and seamless. -they accept both cash and card. -the service here isn't the best. you're not going to get the best treatment from the workers, but it's no big deal. -there is no outdoor seating. -i waited around less than 10 minutes for my food after ordering. 8/28/20 -eel rice roll: the inside of this seaweed wrap comes with purple rice, grilled eel, lettuce, cucumber, crispy radish, crispy fried dough, pork floss, and their special sauce. i really think that their special sauce is what makes their rice rolls taste so good, because the creaminess really makes each bite so satisfying. the crunchiness from the other vegetables and add-ins have a great texture as well. the grilled eel tasted just like the ones in eel sushi rolls, and had such a good flavor. while i do think that they could've added more eel, i was just glad that they didn't stuff this with too much rice. their rice rolls are pretty small and not filling enough for a full meal usually. this rice roll is more expensive than their other ones, since it was $6; but, i still thought that it was worth the price. If you had no idea what a fan tuan is, then you're in good company. It's a Taiwanese food item, consisting of purple sticky rice with meat/protein filling, wrapped with seaweed. Kind of like a sushi burrito. They're pretty filling due to all the rice, so a full one is probably enough if you're not *too* hungry. For two people, we split the eel, duck, and beef rolls. The eel was the best of the three. The duck was just standard Chinese BBQ duck. And the beef was meh, and meat distribution was spotty. Poor and rude customer service. The cashier got my order wrong twice and I kept correcting her but she ignored me. Then I had to reorder again and do this whole refund process because she got the order wrong. She was rolling her eyes and giving an unpleasant attitude. I remembered finding this place on Yelp a while ago and thought hey, why not give them a try. Staff here were really nice and helpful. I ordered the Eel Rice Roll without the pork floss / meat floss, because I'm really not a fan of them. My roll came out quick and it was super hot and fresh. It's also really, really big for the price. For something that's under $5, it was really filling and such a good deal. I love the purple sticky rice! When you can't find onigiri near, besides Formosa Cafe, this is the place you'd want to go for rice rolls. Not rice noodle but like a rice burrito. There are less than 10 options of fillings and they use purple rice instead of regular white rice. Prices are from $2.95 to $3.95 for the rice rolls. They also have a sweet one, which sounds interesting, and they have drinks so if you need to be hydrated, grab a drink from here. Highly recommend the eel rice roll. Regular spot for me. Usually get the beef rice roll without radish and pork floss. Spicy mayo is also a free and tasty alternative to regular mayo. It cost about $5 (4.90 i think) for one. I tried the others, eel, duck, chicken, and pork. Personally, the beef and duck seem the healthiest to me, the favors seem most natural. The beef is very tender and the duck is soft and boneless which is a first for me. All the ingredients inside seem to work well together but the radish is a bit sour for me but still okay with it included. Pork floss is pretty good but I don't like the MSG. Black peppered option cost a bit more but doesn't taste as natural for me. The food is a quick, simple but tasty meal. No mess and not heavy. I particularly like the purple rice, it's a bit crunchy and adds texture. Rice rolls to me are quite similar to sushi hand rolls with more rice and structure. Great choice for a quick snack. Small walkin place with 3 stool chairs. Decided to stay in to eat since no one else was in the store. Makes no difference to stay or to go. They two rolls were just handed to us barely. No trays or napkins were given. All self serve. They put it in a bag if its to go. We ordered the special roll which was nothing special but this interesting crunchy texture that we can't figure out what is was made us wanting more of it. The duck roll was very tasty. Lots of duck meat. The eel roll was good but more on the sweet side. All the rolls were constructed equally amount of dressing and their ingredients. Stopped by to get a Mango Tea - refreshing, tasty, and a large is a true large! The only thing is that the staff's system of taking orders, making orders, and giving the orders out was inefficient. We stopped by this place recently and it was beyond disgusting. While waiting in line I noticed the guy taking orders touching his nose and face multiple times and then proceeding to wrap people's orders. There was also a kid playing with a toy behind the counter, where the food was being prepared. Normally that wouldn't be an issue, but considering the lack of hygiene going on behind the counter, this could only make things worse. By the time I reached the front of the line, I was so disgusted, I decided to only order drinks, which are made in a different section. My daughter ordered the passion fruit tea, which was ok, but much sweeter and not as good as ones we've had elsewhere. I ordered a honeydew slush. It was a boiling hot day and I desperately wanted something cold to drink. The slush turned out not to be a slush at all. It was some odd blend that tasted lumpy, curdled and simply weird. My friends were in search of Taiwanese style rice rolls. We squeezed 6 adults and 2 babies into a van and trekked into Brooklyn from queens just to try it. Was it worth the hour drive? No, but I still scarfed them rolls down like a starving orphan child. I tried the duck and braised pork with pickled vegetables. Both were delicious and satisfying. There's nothing complex about it. It's seaweed wrapped rice with lettuce, pork floss, cruller, and your chosen protein. My friends who had it in Taiwan said it wasn't quite authentic. These had mayonnaise. Some friends liked the addition, and other didn't. I didn't mind it and I'm sure you can request to leave it out. The other complaint was it was too heavy on the rice and not enough filling. The rice balls are good, the drinks are not bad, do avoid the cheese/salted cream topping though, as their execution of it is weaker than Moge Tee and Mi Tea in flushing. One thing to note is that they offer this rare Fujianese dessert called "Ice Rice". It's basically a quart of sweet soup, with a big block of ice on the bottom, lined with red beans, purple rice, jelly, boba, topped with peanuts and watermelon cubes on top. Oh this new spot is delicious. I decided to pick up some rice rolls for a quick bite yesterday - bacon, duck & eel. I love the rice they use, it certainly compliments the meat and the sauces perfectly wrapped in nori. The mango fresh fruit tea with jelly was average however there were tiny pieces of mango inside my tea, which was a fruity touch! I also added lychee jelly but was given a regular straw that was too small and impossible to consume the jelly with the tea together. My only other complaint is the lid they used wasn't very sturdy on the cup. The lid on my white gourd milk loosens and fell off, which caused a minor spillage. The lid wouldn't fasten back onto the cup either. Service and staff are friendly but English isn't their strong suit. They mostly speak mandarin. Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Normally don't write reviews but their attitude and customer service is terrible. They had a promotion,but I was confused so I went to ask ONE question and she started giving me attitude. It was a buy one get second on half price so I order two and she charged me for the full price of two rice rolls. They were trying to trick me because I'm a younger, she didn't even say sorry. They knew it was a promotion. My mom just asked them few minutes ago. So when I asked because I knew it was wrong she was like "oh yea" they knew but we're trying to tricking me. But that's not all, when I got my order back she literally threw it at me . They weren't just rude to me but to other customer before me . Very dissatisfied and disappointed.
