A very small investment in consultation resulted in my brother in law benefitting $35,000. Robert was right. I facilitated my brother in law to speak to Robert. He needed the prod as he's one of those guys that doesn't like attornies. I know better. They can be a necessary evil...no offense Robert. I talked to a number of attorneys and they said we did not have a case. When we spoke Robert he agreed we did not have strong legal case but suggested my brother in law call and then write a follow-up email to HR to explain his legitimate family situation. He said sometimes this really works and a phone call is more personal and believable and is better do it first before an email. An email as the first point of entry can be questioned for sincerity. The HR Director empathized with my brother in laws situation and to make a long story short, it benefitted him about $35,000. Previously a friend told my brother in law to file a harassment charge instead. Robert said that had no basis and would not work with an honest empathy strategy. So that was invaluable to know. Robert spent time outlining the key elements for the phone call and letter. Many things we did not think about and made it much more effective. Probably because Robert negotiates for a living. Now it is true he did not do any legal action but it is also true that he applied his experience to find an alternative plan that was definitely worth trying. Plus it did not cost very much in legal fees. We knew this was no guarantee but it worked great. So a small investment with a high return. And if we went the harrassment route, it would have totally backfired. Don't listen to lay people and don't try to understand something not in your expertise. Get an attorney when something critical may happen. I tell my friends this all the time. I used an estate attorney and that was a huge impact.
