I've been coming here for over 3 years now and anytime I'm in the area, I'll pop in to say hi to Frances and Steve. Since we've established a friendship, they now know me well enough to stop me from wasting money on certain products by reminding me that I'm already taking a similar supplement; or that I won't like the side effects. I never feel rushed or pressured as they always take their time explaining products and helping me make decisions. There are health food stores much closer to me but I will always go to Ginkgo- whether it's shopping online or making the trip to Yorkville.

I mostly buy my biodegradable shampoo and conditioner from them, along with other soaps, but they also offer food stuffs (on top of vitamins, powders, etc.) including a great variety of gluten free snacks. They also make smoothies chock full of fruit and other boosters you might need. Oh and ladies, they ALSO sell the DIVA CUP (!) and bleach free, biodegradable "feminine napkins and tampons".

That day finally happened after months of telling myself that, and boy did I wish I had gone there sooner! The shop itself is a decent size -- quaint and cozy, but very clean, easy to navigate, and just overall feels very nice! The staff there is also super friendly, really easy going, incredibly knowledgable, and extraordinarily helpful. Be advised though, the staff is small but mighty! if there are a lot of people in the store, it'll obviously be difficult for them (2? 3 staff at a time) to deal with like, 15 customers. Upon my first visit, one of the staff members that helped me also brought me around and had me sample some stuff. For example, I did NOT know that I liked walnuts until they explained exactly what's up (usually) with store-bought walnuts. Now turns out I do like walnuts, but only if I get them super fresh from this place! Another HUGE plus is that they have a good number of bulk items that have prices that were fixed a while ago. Usually when I go into more eco-conscious and earth friendly establishments, I'm prepared for it to be a tad more expensive than a normal grocery store. What's great about The Source Bulk Foods is that a lot of the staples ended up actually being cheaper than buying them at other stores! Don't get me wrong, they also have amazing organic and artisanal style goods that are pricier, but if you are budgeting for some treats, it's SO worth it. My favourite parts are probably the fact that you can get fresh nut butters -- literally grind it up and jar it yourself! As well as a small, but well-equipped home goods section (think laundry detergent, toilet bowl cleaner, hand soap, etc!)

Strictly Bulk is a godsend for the terribly grocery-deprived Bloorcourt area. The store carries everything from organic laundry soap to bulk candy (whoo!). Despite the name, they do carry a few non-bulk and prepackaged items, including my beloved Fontaine Sante hummus. The prices are more than competitive, and they beat out the bulk sections of some of the large grocery stores nearby (such as No Frills at Dufferin Mall or the Sobeys at Ossington and Dupont). You'll never want to buy steel cut oats at Whole Foods again! The savings are definitely there, whether you are buying for a large family or just one person. You aren't paying for packaging, marketing, etc. One time, for fun, I compared my bag of whole salted almonds to the prepackaged brand at Shoppers, and the price came out to nearly three dollars more per pound (!) if I had purchased the Life brand. And they were on sale! Spices are another incredible savings, if you only need a few tablespoons of something for one recipe you will pay pennies on the dollar with nothing left to lose its potency while it collects dust in your cabinet for months or years. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They will always check to make sure that they are charging the correct price for your items. I noticed tonight that they just put their staff holiday stockings up, so if you're a regular try to show them some love! There are plenty of people who love this place so much they seem to hang out at the tables up front drinking coffee all the time! Watch out for their limited weekend hours, I have been mid-recipe cooking Sunday dinner and popped over only to have forgotten that they close at 5pm. Recommended buys: Fontaine Sante dips, handmade face and body soaps, veggie pate, grind-it-yourself coffee (I like the Turkish kind). Best value is in spices and staples (rice, beans, etc). Needs some work: Very small cheese/refrigerated selection, not the most kid-friendly store - today I saw a little boy accidentally spill about a quarter pound of pasta on the floor, and I watched in horrified anticipation as he gathered it together if he was going to take it to the trash can or put it back in the bin. He ended up listening to his mom and left it for the cashiers to clean up.

The lady is glued behind the register, difficult to pry her away from there when you need help in finding a product, she usually points to where it is and when she does leave the register, she scurries back quickly.
