Before writing my review. I would like to state I normally give a 3 strike review. Unless it's a bad experience I know could affect other Yelpers, future customers or clients. I rarely do bad reviews but today drawers the line. That being said, we pay money to workout. Sometimes we answer the phone, sometimes where certain things that other gym allows that I guess YMCA doesn't. I get it, gym protocols. I have always had gym etiquette due to propped up bringing and the uncles reminding us growing up. However, if you gonna be policing members like no tomorrow. That's not a gym, it's an institution. You can't control the flux of drug addicts coming in and taking peoples gym equipment. But people are breaking into the lockers. Making the environment unsafe? To me please make it make sense. This is why I'm happy I have, Iron Hawaiian fitness and UFC gym. Even though the parking is crazy. The environment is so awesome. I'm glad this is my last year at YMCA. It's definitely not like it used to be before. But I hope it gets better and they start treating their members better. read more

The largest YMCA branch on Oahu, and it's just outside the heart of Downtown Honolulu. I don't come here very often, but the regular weight room is the largest I have seen along with the free weight room. There are plenty of cross-trainers and exercise bikes but the only downside is that they lack treadmills. The stretching area is in a separate room. Going through the entire building can feel like being in a maze and it might be somewhat easy to get lost. My family and I were very active with our local YMCA back in Virginia, so we were looking forward to finding a similar experience at a YMCA in Honolulu once we got settled here. My husband selected the Nu'uanu location because it's the closest to our apartment and they have hula classes for kids on Saturdays. The facility is spacious and I love how welcoming it is for keiki. My husband likes to use the child-watch service and reported that our two kids have fun in the child-watch room which is larger than our former one. However, the pros end there. My husband has to be vigilant about signing the kids up in child-watch before they get booked up, and it gets booked up super quickly. He signed up our 3-year for hula classes for the month of November. When we arrived on Saturday, it turned out the class was canceled due to a belated Halloween event for kids. We did not receive a notice in advance and our daughter was crushed. We were also super confused when we arrived because a group of elderly women who were signing in the kids kept asking pointing us in different directions about what to do and where to go. All we wanted to know was whether the hula class was still on. We didn't get our answer until the hula teacher came up to us and explained that the class was canceled. We were so upset, my husband requested a refund for the November classes. Looking at other reviews, it seems that poor communication is a prevalent theme. read more

Growing up, the Y is where I learned to swim! Nice pool, clean water, lots of adult and children aquatic programs is what makes this Y a win. There are a lot of classes, equipment, and offerings here that compare to other fitness clubs. But one of things that sets them apart is the wide range of programs for both children and kupunas! The facility itself is a little tired, but recent lobby enhancements, fresh paint, and the addition of an Urgent Care facility within the building serves the surrounding community well. read more

An amazing community center. Every Saturday, the facility is booming with people of all ages. They provide many classes including Hawaiian Studies for our Keiki. My daughter loves her halau and her kumu. The fitness center is busy but I do see that they don't over crowd. Their pool looks amazing. read more

COVID-19 UPDATE Mayor Kirk Caldwell issued an order to close gyms for the next 14 days, starting 12:00 A.M. Thursday, August 26, 2020. Today, me and about 30 Nuuanu YMCA members enjoyed working out at our reserved time of 6:00 A.M. because we all knew there would be a 14 day shutdown of the Y because of Mayor Caldwell's order. After completing my workout and before exiting the facility, Debbie, the personable and always smiling Y check-in person said goodbye. To clarify. Karl Fritz is not effective with communicating between his employees and their schedule. Do not ever take swim lessons with Terrin if you have a young three year old. He is not good with young children and teaching them how to swim. The director of aquatics thinks it's okay to push people off with a refund but it's not about a refund it's about the experience and time invested. I would highly not recommend group swim lessons or private lessons. There are good instructors but the chances are few and far between. check out wikiwiki instead. read more

3.5 stars I've been coming here since the Atkinson location closed down. It's located right off Vineyard so it's very convenient and parking is free here. The place has a pool, basketball court, racquetball court, lifting area, Subway, locker rooms and several other rooms for classes. It is dated but they did bring in new equipment not too long ago so that was nice. The staff here is friendly but some of their processes are really slow and dated. I do like the vibe here because it's chill and there is less people than at 24 Hour Fitness. Members are friendly here too. You don't have to wait forever to use a machine or to lift. It also has a full indoor basketball court vs a miniature indoor court at 24 and Honolulu Club. Rates are decent and I believe they have financial aid. Overall, solid place! read more

This place has gone absolutely downhill in their youth department. My children used to attend all of their intercession, summer and A+ programs, but not anymore. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR KIDS. They're just there to do what they need to do to get that paycheck and clock out for the day and that's really concerning when they are responsible for the wellbeing of your children. This place fails to realize that we are a tight community with parents of children in schools around the area, which is ironic because they love to rave about how they do great work for the community. We all have the same horror stories with the same bottom line: the staff and management do not care or know what they're doing. Within the past couple of months, there was a social media crisis about a child getting abused in their A+ program, and the staff not caring about it at all. At another school, a staff member was screaming her head off to a kindergartener for eating a snack during play time. At another school, a child was climbing a pole, fell off and hit his head, and nobody told anyone anything. Most of these instances, the parents didn't get a follow up from management. Just a couple of weeks ago, I went to pick up my child and overheard the director of the whole program, Kulay, talking to the director of the school program about how much work sucks and how specific kids make it worse. The pure shock in their eyes when they saw me turn the corner should've been recorded. Don't even get me started about their intercession and summer programs. As confusing as it is, this place was at their peak best right before, during, and slowly coming out of COVID. The staff there actually knew what they were doing, cared about your kids, and actually tried to get to know you. We saw the same faces every day (they are horrible at keeping their staff now), and our children absolutely loved going to the programs and seeing the leaders and directors. The management was the best ive ever seen it with Mr.John, Mr.J, Mr.Ed, and Mr.Evandor. All of our families had the best time and NO problem referring other family friends to this place because of the work that they put in to making sure your children are SAFE AND HAVING FUN. WAKE UP YMCA!! It's not about the waitlist that you all have right now. It's about the quality of your programs because of poor management over the past couple of years. Us parents are actively trying to get all of our schools to change A+ companies because you are not cutting it. We already know some who have transferred schools because of you. I really hate to give the YMCA more money, but fortunately, we have found the schools that the old management is now responsible for and some of us have already transferred to there!! Went this morning at about 10 am not too busy front desk girl told me to wait since it's my first time but the tour was horrible I won't name this haole white balding boy with a Trainer shirt on just doing minimal explaining each room from outside but once got down stairs to locker room told me go in and check it out without him ? Was confusing l asked a member if you could go to pool area he didn't know another pointed shower stall as l went to the area shower floor was very wet as l was wearing slippers very slippery as l pushed thru heavy door half closed finally got to pool area having pool aqua class not wanting to ask the instructor saw poolside guard sitting on deck asked about pool room area didn't know anything or wanting to accommodate I finally went back out after ten minutes he was sitting waiting for me and ask All done ? Well that's it ! He definitely needs more training the Trainer as he left to the front desk saw a another member signing a form telling me she's signing up for personal training just then tour escort coming back asking or do you know her ? I said no but she was explaining me about getting a trainer which he didn't explain at all there were many more others with him but lastly l sat on bike mills for 3 miles run after coming out of the room who do l see but same tour guy with No acknowledgment No recognition staring out of space Not a Very Welcoming place to be ! What kind of trees are in the parking lot? Monkey Pod?! They make a mess! So I've been a member of the YMCA (the Y) for years, thus, having a really good grand-fathered in rate. And although the limited operational hours here blows, it would be really dumb of me to drop my membership now because of that. Instead, I've made adjustments to my schedule to where I can incorporate time to get my workouts in. If you didn't already know, the Y offers many different classes that members are welcomed to participate in. Classes like Tai Chi, Cycling, Aikido, Escrima, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Water Aerobics, Kickboxing, and many more that I'm sure I'm overlooking, are all included in your membership. Just check out the monthly schedule posted at the gym or online. I come here mostly just to workout in the weight room because the other gym that I belong to seriously lacks in this area. Here, the machines are plentiful and so are the free weights. Some areas here are in need of a serious face-lift for sure. The locker room for one is in desperate need of it. But honestly, I don't care about the aesthetics as long as the workout equipment is functional. And it is so there are no complaints from me. NO CELL PHONE zones! Love it! The use of cell phones are not permitted in any of the workout areas. This way, selfie freaks and smart phone addicts can't be hogging up the equipment because they're too busy screwing around on their phone. I hear that monthly memberships here are pretty steep these days. However, I have also heard that they have financial assistance and corporate rates for those who meet the criteria for discounted memberships. Sweet, huh? Go check it out. Really wanted to take a Lindsey class and since she relocated to the Nuuanu YMCA I decided to go to her Saturday 8:00 am HIIT class. this was my first time at the Nuuanu YMCA. I was really impressed with what they had to offer their members. It's a big facility and I enjoy group classes (I need someone to motivate me) and they offer many group classes Monday-Sunday at all different times. The pool is huge and the member service desk staff was super friendly and accommodating. I noticed an ATM machine, lots of hand weights, mats, stationary bikes were cool looking and antibacterial wipes! This is a way easier way to clean what you used then a spray bottle. Definitely more sanitary. Back to Lindsey's HIIT class. If you have taken a Lindsey class you know that you are going to workout hard, not be bored, laugh, moan out of pain and hurt for about 3 days. The main thing is to not give up and keep coming back. I was absolutely not disappointed and it was worth the drive. Can I just say that I am currently loving this YMCA! The first time I came here it was a terrible experience, this was pre Covid and let me tell u how packed this gym was!!!!! The weight room was disgustingly busyyyy I just wanted to throw up. BUT POST COVID...... it is amazing!!! All the machines are spaced out and that front desk woman that I see every single time I check in, she's so amazing. I just love her energy so much!!!! Also the members aren't bad, I had to workout and I felt really uncomfortable facing random dudes to me left and right ( this was for a hip thrust circuit rep, I know, yikes!) but the guy I spoke to had his son and they where in the area before me so I felt really bad. But you gatta do what you have to to get the best workout ya know! So he switched spots with me and they moved all their things too! Super nice! Also I used the cable machine for the kickback workout and they don't have ankle straps so I suggest bringing your own! Any who, another guy saw that I didn't have one and he lent it to me. How nice! Of course I need to start bringing my own things but sometimes I think going to the lockers are a little humbug. But I'll start bringing my gym bag down. I love working out here now! I used to go to the Kalihi YMCA but haven't been back there since everything shut down so I'm glad I reopened my membership. My only advice is, if you're waiting for a machine like the smith Machines to do squats is to wait there because people often do that. Or else if it's a busier day, you'll never get on it. After losing 50+ pounds from hiking Diamond Head and Koko Head Crater on a regular basis in a little over a two-year period, it was time to tone the body so I joined Nu'uanu YMCA. I also looked into Bishop 24 Hour Fitness but found the Y to be more family-oriented with people of all sorts. Another plus is that it's slightly closer to my home. I feel more comfortable at the Y as there were too many Ken's and Barbie's walking around when I visited Bishop 24 Hour Fitness... Because it has been years (since the mid 90's) that I joined a gym, I am not that acquainted with the weights and facilities so I signed up for a personal trainer to get me into a regimen. I have been working w/ Jedd for about 6 months now and am glad to report decent progress. I highly recommend people to hire a personal trainer because in my case, he gets me out of my comfort zone and pushes me to the next level. I'll admit it - I'm human and tend to be lazy at times so I need that push. At times it is difficult to motivate myself to drag my body here but end up digging deep for strength and motivation. I have also made friends since coming to the Y and do my best to come here about 4x - 5x a week. This place is a GREAT outlet for stress release. It is key that I am not expecting instant results. It took years for me to balloon to 260 lbs (I'm 5'7). It is not realistic for me to have my weight shed and body tone up in a short period of time. I am taking things gradually and will continue this program. I now weigh at about 157 and hoping to tone more but I definitely don't want to bulk up. There is a lot of parking here but can be a problem when they have a swim meet. I also like to participate in their car wash and bake sale to help their Youth Program. It is a good cause to help the keiki's. Not to mention, at times they have some great baked goods at such reasonable prices. read more

I was a member years ago, but stopped because we moved away from the area and my workplace provided a gym so it was more convenient. Now that we moved back in the area and my oldest son now being old enough to start banging some free weights with his old man, I figure why not? The membership allows my whole family and I to go to any other YMCA facility too. I believe this location maybe the only one that has a swimming pool, but I'm not too sure. They have locker rooms, but you have to bring your own padlocks. They have laundry and towel service for a small fee a month or you can just bring your own. They now have a Subway restaurant right in the lobby area! There are ample parking lot right in front for free or in the back garage with the first 3 hours for free and every hour after that is $4. All the staff here are friendly and informational. We took a tour held by Hazel who was every friendly. The tour lasted about 15-20 minutes. We ended up signing up for the family plan for $79 a month. This would allow almost all access to majority of their classes, facility, and other features. There are a few classes that cost an additional fee which varies. For those with little kiddies, the parents can workout while their kiddies can be watched in either of their 2 Fun Zone rooms which is pretty much like a day care center. What I love about this place is that it really does feel like it's for the community. The building does show some age, but that's why I feel like it's comfortable for some reason lol. It has everything that we need so I'm fine with that and I think their rates are very reasonable. The YMCA is a non-profit company so come and support. read more

The more I work out, the less guilty I feel when stuffing my face... Luckily for me, the Nu'uanu Y is conveniently located close to work and home, making it convenient to burn a few calories before and after a stationary day in the office. The atmosphere is pleasant, people are nice, and overall it's a pretty great place to get in a good workout. The Nu'uanu Y's facilities aren't the greatest or the nicest but, they definitely look a lot better than they did before and are definitely better than the other YMCA's. For the most part, this place is clean and the AC always works (that's all that matters to me). I don't use a lot of the various facilities; I mainly go to for their group exercise classes. My personal favorites include Yoga with Joelle, HIIT and Core Fusion with Lee, Strong 30 and Barre with Maile, and MOSSA-Strength Training with Patty, Frannie, and Kathy. The instructors are awesome, knowledgable, and always friendly. Parking is always easy to find. However, in the event of a packed day (a.k.a. The first few days of the New Year), they also have extra parking in the back. read more

An awesome place to workout. Membership dues for families can't be beat here! So reasonable. There weights, cardio classes, swimming and full size gym! The parking can be an issue in the late afternoons and on the weekends with all the kids swimming classes going on but what can you do. I been a member for years and I think I always will be. One of the bonuses that I forgot to mention was that when traveling and there happens to be a YMCA nearby you can use your card to gain entry for free a few days and a small fee for an extended trip! The open gym for basketball is unfair and players insist on the rules even though it differs from the posted rules. For example, newcomers step-on as soon as they arrive, even if there are people waiting. I've waited two hours for a game only to find 5 new players arrive late and cut in front of me. I don't think players should be rewarded for arriving late. It's winners stay on, so the regulars stack the teams and will sub-out their friends to improve their team. It's absolutely impossible to tire out the 'king of the court' since they keep subbing out tired players for fresh ones of their choosing! The rules create a lot of arguments that slow down the game, which makes it frustrating for those who are waiting. If you do still love basketball and want to play at this location, go on Saturday mornings. Most of the ballers on Saturdays used to play at the Central Y location that closed recently. When they moved locations, they brought unity, sportsmanship, and comrade with them. *The Nuuanu Y charges extra membership fees for towels (new this year). The Subway inside makes it convenient, but does not open as early as the gym itself. read more

Don't be fooled by the exterior- it needs paint and the YMCA letters have yet to be replaced. But inside its clean and air conditioned in all the right places. There is an open air courtyard with a Subway Sandwich shop if you need to refuel. The folks who work there are friendly and helpful. Don't be shy if you need help with a machine- there is a myriad of them and some are quite confusing. I swear I almost got pretzled by a Nautilus machine! My bad... Soon help arrived and explained how to use. There is a huge outdoor pool (its Hawaii folks!) which has been recently renovated. There are 3 floors including locker rooms, humongous gymnasium and machines of every kind. Some have Bluetooth or bring your own headphones and watch cable, sports, scenic, etc. Free weights, universal gym and free classes for all (even those with Parkinson's). All inclusive, friendly and clean. Grab your workout gear, buy a lock and get motivated! Remember, the more we work out the less guilt we feel when pigging out! read more

Machines are great, much better selection of machines than Windward YMCA keeps me coming to Nuuanu to work out. Gotta have my circuit/routine and ab machine. Sauna in locker room is a selling point too but I wish these dang old ladies would stop hanging their stinky chlorine soaked bathing suits to dry in the sauna... right over the sign that says DO NOT HANG CLOTHES, etc. Y'all need to shower off before entering the sauna and... Leave your clothes either on your body or outside thank you very much. there's a device specifically made for spinning your bathing suit dry right outside the sauna door. Only bad experience in 10+ years was this couple of weeks a few months ago when an extremely mentally-ill lady was crying and howling really loudly in the locker rooms for hours every day. When approached by staff who asked if she was okay she said yes, and when asked if there was anything they could do to help she said no, and as soon as the staff left she went back to howling again. Very disturbing. I feel for her. It would be nice if more YMCA's had saltwater pools, as well. Chlorine is toxic. Oh well that's why I go to the beach with the sharkies. read more

I've been coming to this gym for over a year and half. I like the free parking and classes offered. I've attended some of the classes such as the circuit training and gut-cut courses. I've noticed a difference (consistency is key). Attending classes really helps to connect with other members as well as the staff. Nice when they remember your name. I really don't want to go to another gym. The only thing I would like is earlier hours on Sundays (they open at 7am). Also, this gym closes early on the weekends. I wish they would extend this time. Other than that, I like what is offered and they recently added new machines. read more

I love the people here at the Nuuanu YMCA. Everyone, from the staff, to the instructors, to the people here working out, are beyond nice. There have been a few times I didn't know how a machine worked and someone would just come up next to me and teach me! I've tried going to other gyms, but the people here are just the best! I don't feel like I'm being silently judged here and I always see everyone wipe down the machines after they've used it. I also love the variety and frequency of the classes here: from yoga to kickboxing to foam rolling... There's something for everyone. Like everyone said, the parking here is horrible during peak times (4:30pm - 7:30pm). I tend to avoid the gym during these times because not only is parking terrible, all the machines I want to use are taken as well. If you qualify for Kaiser's Active and Fit program, this gym participates in the program! read more

This is the best YMCA on the island. The YMCA is family/community oriented, which is great but it means that it gets a little crowded after normal work/school hours. I love coming in around 10-2 when my schedule allows, because I rarely have to wait for equipment then. This location is very handicap accessible and has a large-semi open area with a Subway sandwich shop just inside the entrance. They offer cheap massages by appointment. Workout areas include a sizeable fitness machine area, cardio machine area, free weight area, yoga/calisthenic rooms, and they even have a small heavy bag. There is a pool, with a relatively unbusied schedule; lots of opportunities for free swim/laps etc. Small locker rental is only $5/mo., which is great for me, because I don't like carrying goggles, gloves, bag gloves, etc. around all the time. 5 star functionality but it's a lil old and outdated. Loved the Subway shop in the lobby! A bit cavernous and oddly designed. Clearly this is a product of a different era/different building layout. The swimming class needs to get their shit together! My son grandmother took my son to his swimming class. So, she went to the instructor to ask where he needs to go cuz they got their early. The instructor Matt told her she need to wait they gona call the kids when they are ready. Mind you my sons class supposed to start at 11:00am but it was already 11:30 and she was still waiting for my son to be called. Puzzled, she went up to Matt and said I'm waiting for my grandson to be called and no one called him. Curt as he was, Matt said you need to pay attention when they call. Then I asked Matt, well since he missed can my son make up? Matt said no we are to busy! Note to them: maybe you should be more organized and give better directions as to where we need to be, with which teacher and maybe speak louder so we can hear you call them! Went to the Y this afternoon for a workout. They've definitely taken measures to keep everyone safe. However with the change of the women's locker room into a unisex bathroom is very unnerving, especially when there's no camera or someone in there at all times. While the showers and sauna room is closed, there should be a staff member in there. It's a huge liability on the Y to not provide security in there especially if you're going to make that a unisex bathroom. Suspending my membership until things change.. With all that's going on with assault, I'm not taking my chances. read more

Although it isn't as top notch as a private gym or bigger owned gyms it still definitely gets the job done. The equipment is good enough to get you through a good workout. Sometimes you have to adapt to the machines they have however you can always find a substitute for what you are looking for if it's not already there. It's not too crowded, especially in the morning and if you have gym anxiety this is a good place to start. Everyone is lowkey and just minds their own business, but if you need help with something, anyone is willing to help you. Such irony! The "Welcome Desk" still does not welcome. Very few, not enough, associates smile and greet members. There's this guy, his name starts with a "J," who mans the desk before or around lunch time into the afternoon. I come in almost daily and he has NEVER greeted me or anybody ahead or behind me. I visit daily. Today the staff let some lady pass out in a massage chair as it constantly spouted out "Please insert money to start your massage. Thank you." 90 minutes have passed and 3 people have complained. The manager doesn't care to react. Considering cancelling. I can't relaxing over this massage chair noise. read more

In the spirit of full disclosure I chose to use my two free trial days because this really beautiful young woman works out there. Before you can get your Lululemons all up in a bunch, we both thought it would be fun to try it out and have a workout buddy. The last time I was at a YMCA it was at "minnow" swimming lessons when I was a little kid. I always thought of the place as a place you take your kids to swim and a place for grandpa and grandma to play bingo and learn the fine art of flower arranging. To my surprise, the Nu'uanu YMCA has a newly remodeled gym! Tons of new workout machines including stationary bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, and weight machines. The facility provides towels, is nice and clean, has a pool, lockers and showers, basketball courts, racquetball courts, and a weight room. There are Zumba classes, judo, boot camp and some other group workout activities. There is also a Subway if you're hungry (but I'm not really a fan of Subway, sorry). One of the big benefits for younger members is that the membership is largely skewed toward middle aged adults and up. That being said, unless your workout consists mainly of ellipticals and stationary bikes, the machines and free weights you're used to will be open most of the time. A few gym rats and crossfit junkies will be doing dumbbell curls and deadlifts, but for the average gym member, the flat bench, incline bench, seated row, tricep dip, lat pulldown, leg extension, ab crunch, oblique twist, chest press, pec fly, calf raise, and shoulder press machines will be open to use. Ok, ok the first question on everybody's mind is how much it costs. So they have this very structured cost system to become a member. If you're a "young adult" like me, you can pay $33 per month up until your 27th birthday. If you're between 27 and senior citizen, you pay based on your income starting as low as $33/month. The next question is how are their hours? Well, they're open 7 days a week and open very early in the morning and close pretty late at night. Weekdays they close at 10pm, 7pm Saturdays, and 5pm Sundays. While not as flexible as a 24 Hour Fitness, these hours work for most people. Now that you're ok with price and hours, yes they provide towels. Usually warm and freshly folded, Hazel is the friendliest Y team member and I always enjoy seeing her smiling face when we go to workout. Chris is another of my favorite Y team members and he does membership signups. They don't exactly allow for photos to be taken in the gym so I can't show you how great it is, but take my word for it, it's pretty awesome. And don't forget to get a gym buddy, keeps you on track and pushes you to do more! read more
