In the spirit of full disclosure I chose to use my two free trial days because this really beautiful young woman works out there. Before you can get your Lululemons all up in a bunch, we both thought it would be fun to try it out and have a workout buddy. The last time I was at a YMCA it was at "minnow" swimming lessons when I was a little kid. I always thought of the place as a place you take your kids to swim and a place for grandpa and grandma to play bingo and learn the fine art of flower arranging. To my surprise, the Nu'uanu YMCA has a newly remodeled gym! Tons of new workout machines including stationary bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, and weight machines. The facility provides towels, is nice and clean, has a pool, lockers and showers, basketball courts, racquetball courts, and a weight room. There are Zumba classes, judo, boot camp and some other group workout activities. There is also a Subway if you're hungry (but I'm not really a fan of Subway, sorry). One of the big benefits for younger members is that the membership is largely skewed toward middle aged adults and up. That being said, unless your workout consists mainly of ellipticals and stationary bikes, the machines and free weights you're used to will be open most of the time. A few gym rats and crossfit junkies will be doing dumbbell curls and deadlifts, but for the average gym member, the flat bench, incline bench, seated row, tricep dip, lat pulldown, leg extension, ab crunch, oblique twist, chest press, pec fly, calf raise, and shoulder press machines will be open to use. Ok, ok the first question on everybody's mind is how much it costs. So they have this very structured cost system to become a member. If you're a "young adult" like me, you can pay $33 per month up until your 27th birthday. If you're between 27 and senior citizen, you pay based on your income starting as low as $33/month. The next question is how are their hours? Well, they're open 7 days a week and open very early in the morning and close pretty late at night. Weekdays they close at 10pm, 7pm Saturdays, and 5pm Sundays. While not as flexible as a 24 Hour Fitness, these hours work for most people. Now that you're ok with price and hours, yes they provide towels. Usually warm and freshly folded, Hazel is the friendliest Y team member and I always enjoy seeing her smiling face when we go to workout. Chris is another of my favorite Y team members and he does membership signups. They don't exactly allow for photos to be taken in the gym so I can't show you how great it is, but take my word for it, it's pretty awesome. The Nuuanu Y is a great place to work out. Why? 1. It's not a meat market pick-up joint disguised as a gym. 2. Too young to drink? It's okay, you're here to work out. 3. Old enough (like me) to join AARP? It's okay, you're here to work out. 4. There are plenty of classes for adults from Tai Chi to Yoga to Aikido. 5. There are plenty of classes for kids from swimming to Hula to Karate. 6. They open early in the morning so you can exercise before work. 7. It's very convenient to the freeway and to downtown. 8. Not a bunch of "posers" walking around making loud grunting noises. 9. The staff at the front desk are friendly and professional. 10. Nobody cares how you look or sweat when you work out. The only negative is the price, which is a bit steep for a person of modest means. But perhaps that keeps out some who are just looking for a pick-up scene. Like the Central YMCA, this one has an executive men's locker room that you pay extra for. I have no idea what you get for the extra cash--maybe cocktails with pink umbrellas in them? A massage? Or perhaps just the distinction of having to enter a special code in the door, to keep the "commoners" like me from coming in! read more

I totally agree with Norm G.'s review. I actually signed up to the Y on Nuuanu because of his review, and I'd say it's pretty damn accurate. Previously I was a member of 24H Fitness, but I hated the feeling... I don't know, it's just not a friendly atmosphere. Honestly, at the Y you feel like some L&L drivein. It's come as you are, not come to be seen. I'm a people watcher, I like to see what people are doing. At 24H everyone is so self-aware. Here, you see little old ladies that look like your grandma and kids that look like they're on the chess team following each other on an abs machine. I guess I just feel like I fit in and don't stand out. I'm a skinny guy, so I tend to feel out of place at the gym with so many guys who are top heavy. The machines are freaking awesome too! I think these are newer than 24H. Most of the cardio machines have personal TV's on them, and you can plug your headphones and watch CNN, the Cartoon Network, ABC, or even Fox News (if you're into biased republican perspectives, but that's a whole other review). For me that's kind of a big deal because I get really bored on cardio machines. The lockeroom is...hmm...stinky, but really I what do you expect? Yes, the 24H's has a much nicer locker room, but is that the place you're going to the gym for? So unlike Norm G. I pay the extra few bucks for the Men's Aloha Locker Room. For $16 more you get your own assigned locker, with a combination lock, a few extra stuff in the locker room that they don't have in the free one (hair dryer, tv room, a few cardio machines and weights, iron, and a steam room). The big thing is that you get your laundry done every day. You just throw in your workout clothes in a bag, stick it in a hole, and they put your laundry back into your locker before you're back. I would totally recommend this if you think you'll be going to gym directly to/from work because you can leave things like your deodorant and shampoo, and have your work out clothes done for you. I haven't taken any of the classes, but I actually want to. That says a lot, because I'd be the first person running away from classes. I don't use any of the racketball or basketballl court options so I don't know about them. Haven't tried the pool, but at night it seems kind of empty during family swim. And it's heated! You also get 1 or 2 small towels when you arrive, so no need to bring towels like you do at 24H. I would always forget mine and have to buy one. The workers are very nice and very friendly. When I signed up a very nice, albeit confused, woman signed us up. Checking in and out is a breeze. Honestly, this place makes me feel good about myself. It motivates me because I see regular people here working out, and if they can do it so can I. Ken and Barbie at 24H don't motivate me because I don't have 7 hours to be at the gym everyday so I know I'll never look like them, but the little mamasan with her walking cane doing ab crunches is not only uplifting but comforting. read more

So, I'm hitting my two month mark since joining the Y and I've got to say that I am an absolute fan! The Y is replacing my fried/chocolate/sugary pit stops as a haven for "Me Time" and I couldn't feel more better about it. This is a review for the two YMCA's that I frequent: LEEWARD I think this is the newer YMCA out of all of those on Oahu and it's absolutely fantastic. I've gone both in the early morning hours (5:30 am) and in the evening hours (6-7 pm) and both times weren't overly crowded. This location is clean and air conditioned, and there's enough space and equipment to keep everyone happy. They also offer a heated pool, lockers, treadmills w/ mini TV sets, and towel service. So nice! The people who work here are genuinely friendly and give helpful tips on your technique without being pushy. NUUANU I take a class here, but I've gone to their gym a few times to wait out bad traffic. It's a HUGE place. They've got everything Leeward has plus courts, more group exercise classes, a pool, a FRICKING SUBWAY RESTAURANT, and so much more. I think their weight room is a little more intimidating than the Leeward one, but I will say that they have the most updated equipment. The class that I take is phenomenal, albeit a tad bit cramped due to limited room space and lots of eager students. ABOUT THE YMCA IN GENERAL - The YMCA stands for "Young Men's Christian Association" but every time I go here, I see different walks of life and have yet to feel uncomfortable about being a woman or a non-christian. Everyone I've encountered has been really nice (Staff and guests!) - I pay $33 a month, but this is based off of the amount of money that I make in a year, my tax documentation, and whether or not I live with someone. You have to show them physical documentation. After the second year (and assuming your salary is the same) the price goes down. - I work out AT LEAST 3 times a week and take one class a week in addition. The gym that I'm a regular at is two minutes away from my home, so this is definitely worth it to me. It may not be worth it to you for various reasons, so price around your area and really think about what you intend to gain out of it. TIPS FOR YMCA NEWBIES - Start in the Healthy Start Room! The one in Leeward is air conditioned, small, and very quiet. I actually continue to use this room because it is much cooler and continues to meet my needs. - After using the equipment, wipe it down. Throughout the gym, there are spray bottles and paper towels or regular wipe cloths for you to use. Don't leave your stickiness behind. - Don't feel pressured! Everyone needs to start somewhere so know your limit. The machines normally have a guide to show you how to use it. You can follow that guide or ask a representative to help you. Remember to adjust the equipment to your height/build and exercise in correct form to prevent injury. - You might feel shame the first time around because you don't know what you're doing, but KEEP GOING! Nobody is judging you and if they are, they can kiss your fabulous ass :) read more

Let's start with the bad: You know that feeling of triumph you get when you snag A parking spot at Ala Moana during Christmas time? I'm not even talking about a good spot right next to the entrance of Nordstrom or Macy's, I'm talking about A singular parking spot. Finding parking during peak hours at the Y is almost just as headache inducing, requiring you to stalk anyone that looks like they are leaving, or camp out waiting for someone to finish. One time I had to wait 20 minutes in my car just to get a space. If you can, I would avoid coming here between 5-6pm. One time my friend gave up and just turned around and went home. I wouldn't advise doing that either though, lol. Now for the good: -Ample equipment in the weight room and cardio room. The cardio machines have a time limit so people don't hog them... I think people are considerate for the most part and abide by the rules if there are people waiting for machines. KOKUA, people! At first I didn't know how to get to the cardio room, but you just have to go down the stairs by the locker room and you'll see the way. -I've been satisfied with the exercise classes as a whole. Sometimes the quality of the Zumba classes vary with the instructor, but in general I find them fun if anything. Not the most strenuous workout, but it's fun. The cardio classes are also good and the one time I went to the kickboxing class, I was impressed with the instructor. -The workers at the front desk are friendly, which is always a plus for people like me who often have to drag themselves to the gym. -The locker facilities are fairly clean -Great for families because of the family plan. I switched the the Y (used to be a 24 member) because my mom had Y membership so my sister and I just went with a family plan. -Don't have to deal with too many of "those people" who get all dolled up to go to the gym and don't actually work out or go on the elliptical for 45 min on level 1 while fiddling with their hair or talking on their phone... thank god. Just remember, the hardest part about working out is getting to the gym first! Don't be disuaded if you can't find parking... wait it out! read more

I'll be honest, I HATE EXERCISING. There, I said it! Yeah, I feel good after but only because it's finally done and I can go about my day without feeling guilty. So take it from someone who hates to exercise when I say that the Nuuanu YMCA is great. I had a membership to another gym before but I never felt as motivated there as I do at the Y. It could be the friendly staff, free towel service, or the affordable monthly rate but honestly, I think it's the individual TVs attached to most of the cardio machines. Let's face it, it's hard enough (to force yourself) to run but it's even harder when you're stuck watching some boring financial analyst talk about the ups and downs of Wall Street. Thanks for the info but it's not distracting enough for me to stop focusing on the burn in my legs. At the Y, I can watch all the distracting, trashy reality TV I want, which makes the minutes on the elliptical and treadmill tick a lot faster. One random thing that I never noticed until I read another review of this place, at the Y, no one cares what you look like when you're exercising. The meatheads don't walk around, flexing all the time, and the women don't wear ten pounds of makeup on the Stairmaster. Ahhh, gotta love the YMCA! read more

The reason I stick to ymca rather than any other gym is because of the friendly environment. I used to go to Nuuanu frequently in the past and usually go to Waipahu ymca now.. Tonight I went there for the first time in about half a year and all I can say is WTF... I mean, the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming but the atmosphere in the weight room was EXTREMELY unfriendly.. First of all, do these people know what a smile is and how to do so? That stuck up rich attitude needs to go.. Also the fact that the weight room babysitters/staff allow the loud unavoidable grunting by the sassy powerlifting posse that hogs TWO (2) mats. I thinks it's because they're friends.. But whatever.. So much for enforcing the big board of rules on the wall.. Nuuanu used to be such a friendly happy environment.. Wtf happened? read more

I'm a member of the Y and choose Nu'uanu Y for two reasons. 1: The facilities capacity and equipment. Even though there is a newer branch Khalihi side, Nu'uanu beats them by a long shot with the availability in equipment and the facility size itself. Not mention they have the pool. 2: aurora: I don't want to be looking at skinny girls in tiny shorts and guys beefed out while I work on my overweight body to get there. I need to feel comfortable about my body and focus on myself and bit worry about someone else flashing their perfect figure while I sweat buckets over here. This Y is filled with a nix bag if people but mainly your everyday folk just doing the same thing you're doing. No competition. So if either if the above statements are what you are looking for, choose the Nu'uanu y. read more

My GF is a member here and I got a 7-Visit Pass. There are so many classes that I wanted to try but I got to try only some. I loved Ultimate Boot Camp by Steph. C. and Steph. G. and Spin and Body Conditioning by Liberdy. Circuit Training by Herb and Steph. G. were nice too for muscles. Really push you to work harder!!! Determined to seek out the slender me that I am certain still resides somewhere in my body, I joined the YMCA. Alas, the mere fact that I am a member of the Y did not make my chiseled six pack instantly return. That may also be because I've never had one, but that is irrelevant. Thus far I have only taken zumba classes. Coerced just last week by my senior citizen mother to try zumba as I've been illogically stubborn about experiencing this fitness craze, I have since become addicted to the dance workout. Maile is the BEST! She appears physically fit, which I appreciate in my fitness instructors as flabby arms and jiggling tummies are not all that inspiring, and her class is intense. Two songs in I felt my body had completely run out of fluid reserves and the concrete in my thighs had set. My mind was willing but the flesh oh so weak and despite chest pumping being one of my greater resume skills there were several instances in which the ribcage just refused to go. I also experienced heat radiating off my right buttock directly after class, an unusual sensation that assured me at least half of my booty had been thoroughly used. BTW, if you have a dance background Maile's class will not leave you bored! I love love love it. LOVE it. Love. It. The Nu'uana Y provides you with a towel (or two if you're a sweat machine), and also the Y offers free babysitting! Not that I could leave my stranger anxiety ridden baby with them as she would scream to high heaven, but it's nice to have the option. So far I am enjoying our $85 family membership. I love this place. PLENTY TO DO. Machines, treadmills, free weights, a small power-lifting area, seated bikes with TVs, punching bag, swimming pool, basketball court, handball. There are also lots of classes: hula, dance fitness, aquatic exercise... I'm not 100% sure what classes there are because I've never taken one, but there's a schedule up every week. GOOD PRICE. The regular price is $45/mo, but I get a killer special rate from my insurance. Look up "Active and Fit" if you have HMSA. Note: towel service now costs an additional $6/mo, I think. SUBWAY + LOUNGE + WIFI. There's a Subway inside to get a meal. There's also plenty of seats to hangout, eat, relax after your workout. I actually come here, workout, eat, and do work on my laptop. SOME CONS. I often see cars waiting for spots to open during busier times. There is a 2nd lot I think further down the block. There's just a bunch of kids running around. But they go to classes, so if you're in the weight room, you won't see them at all. You will feel a bit of seismic activity. So here is my review of Nuuana YMCA. I would like to start off by saying how much I enjoy this YMCA over the others I been to (Windward and Kalihi). The location is ideal if you live/work in town, like I do. The parking lot is a medium/ large lot, and there was lots of stalls open when I got there (315pm). This was my second time there but the first time actually working out. The gym is split into two parts, freeweights and machines. Its an alrigh set up, but makes it a bit hard waking from one end of the gym to the other. But overall its a great feel to it. The free weights are almost new, and look to be kept in good condition. The machines look the same. Cardio....not enough of it, and I wish there was more. Since I get there around 3pm there is more then enough cardio machines open to use. When you enter the gym (bottom floor) there are 5 or 6 bikes, in the middle and rear (by the machines) there are eliptical trainers (each on with your own personal TV). Then its a short walk up to the tredmills which are about 10 I wanna say?. The locker rooms give you a "high school" feel with rows of lockers, and open shower rooms. No frills....shower, change, and get on with your day. There is also a "mens aloha locker room" but it costs extra because they hand out gold towels and the lockers are made of marble (just jokes). But I have no idea what's in it. There is also a pool, heated, may I add. I always see lap swimmers and the like in there, it looks olympic if you wanted to know. It's a beautiful establishment in a central location. I frequent this Y, during the week after work as it is a short drive from my work place. Parking can sometimes be an issue, but they have two lots. An open lot in front of the building and a garage on Pali just behind the building. I usually get pretty lucky and never have to search too long for a spot *knock on wood*. The gym itself is very clean and spacious, and most of the equipment is new. The women's locker room is always kept clean and they also provide towel service, which comes in handy when you are dripping sweat from one of the handful of fun classes they offer. The classes are hit and miss though, some are better than others, but most of them will still get your heart pumping. I prefer the TKB classes and Savina's Wednesday night Zumba class. Savina is a great instructor, she is very energetic and always makes class fun and interesting. I love her choice of music too, it really gives you the energy to give it your all and it makes the time go by so fast. I'm always sad when her class is over because it really is a lot of fun, but for the sake of not wanting overcrowding you should stay far away from this class because it's really not that great at all. read more

I just got a massage from Roselyn Okubo (she prefers being called 'Roz') at the Nu'uanu YMCA in the room just between the two men's locker rooms. She is very experienced and thorough, and most of all, she remains professional and very friendly. You couldn't expect more from the YMCA. Another thing, she doesn't use any oils and yet you can feel heat emanating from her hands so naturally and she has quite the strength to prove it. I would've stayed for a full hour, but she told me I would have to come back because the problem was deeper and my body wasn't ready for a full treatment. Very professional yet relaxed and no strings attached. Also, very calming and peaceful background sounds during the service. Member discounts apply although it is independent of the Y. But worth every dollar! It's no wonder she's been doing this for the last 18 years! read more

I had a membership for a good year and a half before I actually started utilizing it. After a particularly bad week, I decided I was going to hire a personal trainer and lose weight. I ended up with Rey. If you're looking for a personal trainer he's the one you want. I worked with Rey religiously for 3 months and lost 30lbs. I am still working on reaching my goal weight but Rey taught me a ton of different exercises, how to use the equipment, and made it fun. The facility is clean, not super crowded like some other locations, and the staff are all super nice and remember your name. Parking can be tight right after work but the facility and it's staff are worth the effort. Plus they recently upgraded. I love this Y! read more

I came here for a trial to attend a spin class. They gave a 2 day trial and the spin class was great. you wheel out a bike and they had a big fan and a working speaker/mic system. Downstairs they have all new precor machines ! new for New Years! they have a good weight room, though full of dudes, it's pretty friendly feeling for a girl. mostly young guys that are more concentrated on their own work than on you. they have a cool water machine for ice cold filtered water. the floor work sections has foam rollers, and I think I saw a punching bag room. They have a pool and cardio stuff, but the side room of treadmills was a little awkward IMO. they have a towel service and a locker room too. for a student or financial aid, I've heard the lowest is about $35/mo. 24 hour is about $35 as well, but there's ample parking here, if you can deal with the families and shorter hours than 24. everyone was fairly nice there, I say if you have friends at this Y, it's worth checking out. read more

I came here before during high school. But I didn't come back until a couple of weeks ago. The gym has really changed since I've been there. Their entire cardio machine has mini cable TV. You can bring your earphones and watch TV while you work out. It gets busy around 5 where everyone is getting off work (just like any other gym). I like how YMCA has a punching bag and speed bag. There is towel service, a full size pool, and much much more. My friend likes it here as well because he likes to use the Olympic barbell and the chalk. You can join for a discounted rate if you show them your income taxes (only if you make under a certain threshold). Also if you have a friend who is a member you can tell them you take you there for 3 free trials. The only downside about YMCA is the hours. They only open until 10PM on the week days and around 6PM on weekends. I forgot to mention that there is free parking!!! read more

Busy! Busy! Busy! Coming here from the Central YMCA I was a bit apprehensive. Just like moving to a new city, or first time at a new school, or trying something new. Thankfully, all the staff here are very friendly and helpful that after the first day I did not have any anxiety coming here again and again. While the staff is great, the parking here is a bit of a downer if you go after work, but it is better than fighting a hour or more traffic to get back to the west side of the island. Eventually, a stall will open up. Coming here I had to alter my routine a bit because there are so many people and limited area for free weights and machines. There are plenty of machines but the number of people just overwhelms them. So I do some weights and if my next machine is being used I just hop on a cardio machine for 5 minutes and by then it'd be free. Adapt and overcome! The only downside was when I called into the YMCA I got someone who was very unenthusiastic and misinformed. If you don't know a answer just say you are not sure or go find out. If you give someone a 'yes' or a 'no' and they find out the opposite you just inconvenience them. Overall, I'll be here again and again as traffic seems to be getting worse and worse. read more

I'm going to admit that I'm a gym junkie. The habit is like pringles to me if you know what i mean... Previous to using the nuuanu location, I was a regular at the waipahu one for a good 5+ years. I loved the facility and its convenience so much that I became loyal to the ymca. I'm not one to want to compete or wait for certain workout stations and the ymca was the perfect place to fulfill this need of mine to be able to get to where I want, when i want, to do what i want. On top of that, I enjoy the convenience of their free towel service which allows me to walk in whenever I do without having to worry about forgetting to bring one more thing in addition to the many other things that i already bring in with me. The nuuanu location has a bit more to offer than the waipahu one. There are more free weights and machines. Cardiovascular equipment I would have to say is about equal with the leeward ymca. Various other things are also available that are not available at the leeward location such as a powerlifting mat with setups for squatting and deadlifting. I love it... I would recommend the ymca for those who are looking for such amenities like those that i mentioned. Also, in addition, the ymca offers financial assistance for those that qualify...big thumbs up! If you're serious about your workout then this is the place to be. On the other hand however, the ymca does offer numerous other services to accomodate the needs of a variety of people out there. So this summer I've committed my time to working out. YMCA is definitely my choice in terms of location (walking distance since I don't drive). I come here as often as I could so I remain active. Nu'uanu's location contains more work out equipment than does the YMCA in Kalihi (which I live closer to). I planned on giving YMCA 4 stars but it's not their fault they accept muscle heads who tend to give you stares because of your figure. I got that question always flying at me when they look, "Do you even lift?" I don't. I don't lift. I'm not there to let my muscles take over my body. I'm just there to burn fat. Just that uncomfortable feeling I get all the time I go there, makes me not want to go there. But like I said, it's not YMCA's fault. People just don't know how to smile. I have spurts of gym workouts here & there. There is one thing I know for sure is this gym rocks. The atmosphere is very family friendly with a good mix of younger kids, older active adults, and businesspeople. The group exercise schedule offers a good variety of fun workouts along with the standard weight room and cardio equipment. They have a Subway within the facility. The locker room area is pretty decent. There's a TV for the kids while they wait for you to shower and built in hair dryers. In addition, there's a youth room for child care at limited times. Parking and the gym itself gets slammed around pau hana time (especially in the summer time when they run youth summer fun programs). I thought I'd wait a few weeks of being a member to get the a full sample before I made my review. I switched over from 24 Hour Fitness to YMCA, and I don't regret it at all! My main reason for switching was that the YMCA offered more classes that I was interested in (Karate, boxing, different Yoga classes). Other great perks: +You get a free towel every visit +There are more rooms for classes +The bikes have TVs attached +There's a stretching mat +There are punching bags and speed bags +Easy and free parking +A nice pool +Financial aid is available +There's a subway and tables to relax and eat on To be fair, here are the downsides: -They have limited hours and are closed on many holidays -More expensive (but less expensive if you sign your family up) When I go to the fitness room, I find that I'm never waiting for a bench or for the free weights that I need. There's a younger crowd here and more families, which feels like of nice because it just makes the place have a warmer atmosphere. I'm very happy with my decision to switch to the Y! read more

In high school, I paid $12/month from financial aid. Gym for $12 a month? Yes please. Where can you find that in Oahu? Location, Staff, Equipment all excellent. Best place to go for the entire gym experience. There are many classes available and also can't beat the free towel service. Air coniditioned exercise facilities and locker room, free parking, free locker useage with your own lock. The list goes on and on. I wish I could keep this gem to myself. I will not purchase a membership here. Brought my grandkids for the first time, the girl there kick us out because I did not have a family plan I explained this was there first time and I wanted to make sure they were comfortable in the kids place which she in replied kept saying I did not have a family plan so the kids must leave. As I walked out with my grandchildren they asked why we had to leave... Please explain to me how am I suppose to tell a 5 and 6 year old that the YMCA policy SUCKS when it comes to new members trying to see if it works for the family with out trying first... 2nd review! Why!?! Because the Y is AWESOME! Love this place. Staff- friendly as can be. Facility- clean & good variety in equipment. Parking - adequate (depends on the hour of the day). Group Classes- great group instructors, decent hours of classes, great variety. Members - majority are great, some meat heads, some who are too into themselves but majority are respectful and nice. Great networking. There is a subway within the Y. Decent hours of operation with a great staff. There's also FREE Wifi! Great spot to do some light reading or work. Stay FOCUS people. I travel a lot and swim for exercise. I am a Y member and that helps a lot on the road. The staff was friendly and it was easy to get in as they were able to access my membership by computer. The pool was clean and everyone swimming was knowledgeable about lap swimming etiquette. There are kickboards available as well as towels. This place opens at 4:30 am so if you need an early workout you got it!! For summer you may want to call ahead or check their website for schedules as they do have lessons and other water classes going on. read more

I had a good work out today. Certainly got my heart rate elevated. Received a notice in the mail that my account was not current. I immediately called and left a message. Never received a call back. Today I go in and tell them that there must be a problem and that I wished to resolve it. The young woman tried to be helpful but she appeared to be new at her job. She explained that my account was over due, and there would be a $25 charge in addition to the amount owed. I asked what was the problem. Like a car salesman, she had to disappear and consult the "supervisor". So the expiration date had changed on my credit card. Had they mentioned this in the two months that I have been coming and this was an issue? No. Instead they send me a statement two months later when there is now a $25 fee that is conveniently not listed on the statement. She begins her litany of apologies, as she proceeds to run up the charges. Next she informs me that they had cancelled my account, that I have had for perhaps a decade and thus there would be an additional $50 fee to rejoin. After twenty minutes of her running back and forth to see the wizard, I have had enough. Plus with the all the propaganda about Christian values, I think it is time to bring back the lions. I will go to one of the other gyms equally close to my office. Time to shake up my work out routine and limit the amount of bureaucratic nonsense. read more

We come mainly to this location for my boyfriend to play basketball. I've done the Zumba and Turbo Kick classes at this location as well and they are all great. Some staffs here are friendly and there are times when they have staffs that aren't so friendly. Sometimes they have at least one staff come up to the basketball court just to check and make sure everything's ok which is good because they want to keep the facility safe for all members. The facility is kept clean. They leave supplies needed in different areas that members could use to help keep machines and equipments clean after use. This is the biggest facility on the island so they have a bit more equipments and programs running at the same time. Price range also isn't bad at all. It ranges depends on our income and depends if you was signing up as single or family. Plus membership is island wide. read more

We just moved to Hawaii from Oklahoma. We were looking for a family place to workout at. So far we are happy with the buy in. Cons: Parking isn't great, facility is older and it shows, babysitting area is a bit too small. Pros: Lots of classes I can take part in, the people at the front desk have been very nice so far, they have a Subway to eat at, and they have good hours. Not expensive either. read more

This YMCA is very large, but also very crowded. It is hard to find parking in the evenings. You might have to wait a little before going on a particular weight machine. Also, I heard that Governor Lingle exercises here. Do you really want to share a machine with the lingle? I had a choice between joining the Y and 24 Hour Fitness. My sister goes to the Y and convinced me to give it a try. I had my reservations because I'd been to 24 hour fitness before and I loved it. The Y offers everything 24 hour does. I love that the cardio machines all have their own individual televisions, the problem is always getting one but they're not overly crowded all the time. I haven't been in the pool in years but it looks just like it did since the last time I've been there. The busiest times are later in the morning especially when it gets closer to lunch time. And later in the evening around 5 when people start leaving work. But no matter what time it is there is usually a steady flow of people. I've grown to love the YMCA. The people that go there and the staff are very friendly. I have my moments of irritation, like when there's no parking or I have to wait for an elliptical but that's nothing to do with the Y, I'd have those problems at 24 hour fitness as well. I soon hope to do a group class, they look like a lot of fun. read more

Going to the Nuuanu YMCA is always fun for me. I rarely do anything except play basketball. I enjoy this YMCA because of the full size in door basketball court. The competition is usually alright too. They don't have a gym as big as 24 or power house but they do provide a variety of things to do. This was my first time at this location and my daughter and I really enjoyed it. I recently signed up at the Kailua location and while I love the family vibe there, I found it very hard to get workouts I needed in because of space and availability. So, I decided to check out the "newer" location. I was very hesitant because of the reviews I have seen on Yelp. Especially those concerning employee's mannerism/behavior. However, my little one and I had such an amazing experience here! She loved the child care center. Usually she holds on tight to me and doesn't want me to leave her but this time she was all about it and I had to ask for a hug and kiss goodbye. That made me so happy to see her so comfortable! The two women who were watching them are also very sweet. I love that there were huge windows across the wall so people were watching at all times. It's not easy to just leave your kid with strangers so that added comfort-ability in knowing that anyone can look at any time so the chances of a kid being mistreated are minimized. I enjoyed the cardio section for a small 10 minute run, just to warm up my muscles. Then I walked out and made my way downstairs to the machines/free weight centers. I loved these spaces. So many different machines and so much space! It's definitely worth the 25 minute- half hour drive from my house!! They have mats laid out too for any free weight, medicine ball, etc., exercises or stretches that need to be done. After working out, and picking up my daughter, we went into the quad to grab some Subway. Our sandwiches were made really good. I know, it's just a sandwich, but trust me I've had some terrible experiences at Subway before lol. Overall, I love this location!! read more

It's run down and is very old. Need a bunch of upgrades. Been to one in Lincoln Nebraska and man that one smokes this one by miles. Won't be getting a membership here even though I live really close to it. They need a total makeover. read more

The people here are nice. But the parking is beyond terrible. They simply have to many classes going on at the same time. Add to that you have all the parents picking up kids and the hula halau and it makes finding a stall a maddening experience. And on top of that they block the traffic flow in the lot in such a way that if you can't find a stall the only option is to exit and go around the block to come back in. I get it, it's for 'safety'. This Y is a case of an overbooked facility with barely 1/4 the stalls to accommodate. read more
