This time, I took class with Amber, and she is truly a 10 out of 10 -- from her character to her teaching style, choreography, and ability to educate dancers in real time. She doesn't just teach steps; she teaches movement vocabulary and helps you understand how to inhabit the choreography as it unfolds. That presence and clarity make the experience special. A lot of what I enjoy about Sass Class comes down to both the choreographers and the energy of the space. That said, there are some practical considerations. There is no elevator, which can be challenging because of the number of stairs you have to go up and down. The studio itself is small but functional. There's a small waiting area, a check-in desk, two bathrooms, and a spot to quickly change if needed. There are two studios, which allows classes to run smoothly without feeling crowded. The location is central, not far from Moynihan Train Hall or Port Authority, and there are plenty of food options nearby for before or after class. Overall, SASS Class continues to be a space I value. I fully intend to take more classes there in the future. For me, it's about the quality of instruction, the intentionality of the movement, and the community -- and that keeps drawing me back.

They have a schedule updated monthly, with separate sign-up options for both member and non-members. As a non member, I paid for the drop-in class, which was $25. The class runs for an hour with around 10+ students, where an instructor first starts up with a quick warm-up and then jumps into teaching you a choreo to the song. The choreo is broken into several routines, so you learn them slowly in detail, and then piece them all together with the song incrementally. Dancing is as challenging for your brain as it is for your body, as you need to really exercise your memory and mind body coordination! The whole class went by super fast. Everyone who went seemed to be regulars and quite experienced, but you'd be too busy trying to master the dance to care. At the end, we are placed into two groups, where we are given a chance to perform and record ourselves. DivaDance emphasizes community as they have a whole FB group where you can see past dance classes and meet new members as well! Sign in process was easy and simple and they told me the room the class was going to be in. They also gave the brief reminder not to enter the class until the class that is currently in session is finished and everybody has exit from the class. The hallways of the studio is a bit tight so we had to shuffle around with the people that were coming out and the people that were waiting for the next class but we may do. The size of the class room is a decent size for the amount of people that showed up. The teacher was very informative and assisted with steps and would go over steps as well just for the people that may have missed steps. There was also apart in the class where you got to work with a partner that was fun you got to meet different people. Afterwards for like 5 minutes we had a little dance "party" where you could do anything that you learned from the class.

I understand the classes are popular but I do think it's doing a disservice to the instructors and students when you make a class so crowded. I hope PMT will please take this into consideration and reduce the number of students in a class to make beginner and adv beginner classes actually beginner and adv beginner friendly!

This place is deserving of it's glowing reviews…read more I signed up for a Friday evening Beginner's hip hop class with Ryan who was covering for Rob that day. As someone with zero dance experience, I found the pace of the class too quick and had a hard time keeping up, but that's not anyone's fault. If you have two left feet like me, it can feel intimidating and honestly, discouraging because all the students are great dancers (seriously, have you seen the class videos?), but as Ryan said..practice makes perfect and you just have to keep at it. Despite the nerves, I'd come again because the classes would be a great way to get out of your comfort zone (if you're not a dancer and/or have stage fright) and build confidence. I also recommend dragging a friend to go with you if it's your first time. For you first timers, the building is right to Taco Bell (burritos after class, anyone? Haha) and staples is on the corner of the same block. classes are on the 4th floor. When you get into the building, show your ID to the front desk and they'll give you elevator access. Classes are on the 4th floor and you don't need to check in with them at the front desk. Once the class begins, the receptionist in your studio will check you in. There's a changing room and you leave your belongings in the studio. As for dress code, wear athleisure or something comfortable. I saw jeggings, shorts, tanks, leggings, and sweats. I'm not sure if all the classes are like this so don't take my word for it, but it begins with a 15-20 minute warmup, followed by 45-60 minutes of learning choreography, and ending with 10-15 minutes of "groups" where students are split up to have more room, followed by the opportunity to get your groove on with an even smaller group. Each group goes twice--once with the instructor guiding you, the second time without. You'll also be shuffling to different ends of the room so you can get closer if you need to. Also, each instructor chooses what they're teaching so you don't know the song choice beforehand. Now onto the actual class..Ryan is a great instructor. He breaks down all the steps clearly and at a reasonable pace. He'll repeat them as many times as you need. Again, I struggled because I take longer to learn, but despite that, I enjoyed the class. The room is small for a class with about 40 people but the high energy and positive vibes you'll get more than make up for it. Overall, I'd go again. FYI, If the class is full, you get put on the waitlist (max of up to 10 people can be on this list) and you'll be added to the class as people drop out. If you haven't heard by 11am the next day via email (cut off time to drop a class before late cancellation penalty), you can use that credit towards a different time unless you want to continue waiting to see if the class frees up.

There is also a list of scheduled classes so you can see the instructor that is teaching each class. One of the things that I really like about the hip hop classes is how much repetition is utilized to learn a choreographed routine. As a dancer of many years, 50% of the battle is memory and repetition of each mini-sequence really helps a new dancer solidfy not only the choreography but also master the details of the steps. All the instructors are extremely friendly and approachable, not necessarily so at other places. Not to mention, they do have their own different styles to accommodate different dancers' personalities. Check-in is always a smooth process with HoM staff. All the dancers that attend are super supportive and really nice as well. Nobody ever judges. I wish HoM was out here in the Bay now that I've moved. I've come to love my HoM family in my short time living in NYC. They've only added to the love that I now have for NY.

Sunset is the most popular time to visit and draws the largest crowds. The breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Palisades make the visit even more memorable. There's also plenty of free parking, which makes getting there easy. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is that it can get fairly crowded on beautiful weekends, but it's absolutely worth visiting and returning to throughout the year.

As a former competitive swimmer, it was extremely difficult to do flip turns, not only because they closed half of the pool horizontally due to lifeguard staffing issues, but also because there were multiple people moving in different directions. It was busy when it first opened in the morning but then calm downed a bit and folks were able to do more lap swimming. Water was pretty clean and temperature was good; chlorine levels weren't too bad. Sounds like they close for the fall/winter so I'm hoping to come back before it gets cold.

Fantastic experience is all i can say. I married a Punjabi woman this past fall and wanted to surprise her with a Bhangra performance at our reception, but I have zero dance experience or natural ability. I took two sessions of the Beginners course, and not only did I find myself learning the moves; I was having a blast! Megha is amazing! I was very intimidated at the start, but she made the classes very welcoming and was quick to help out one-on-one if you weren't getting something. That she sent out videos of the choreography after every class was a huge help as it allowed everyone to practice at home. That coupled with some individual instruction by her made my performance at my wedding go better than I had ever dreamed (my wife loved it). No matter what your skill or experience level, if you are interested in a fun activity or a killer workout (Bhangra will make you sweat!), NYC Bhangra is worth a try. Now that the wedding is over, my wife is going to join me at another class. I imagine it will not be her last. read more

I have no words to describe how wonderful Megha is. My husband and I took personal bhangra classes with Megha to prep for my brother's wedding sangeet performance. I came to her saying please help, my husband does NOT dance at all, and I want this performance to shock all those that know my husband (note: I love to dance, but not good at it at all). She went above and beyond, she did so well that my husband danced all throughout the reception party in addition to our sangeet performance being a HUGE success! She is very professional, on time, and most of all has a lot of patience! She was so patient with us especially with us being beginners. Always encouraged and bought the best out of both of us. I've been coming to NYC Bhangra for ~1.5 yrs now, since Feb 2017. Echoing another review's comment, this is definitely the biggest highlight of my week- I absolutely love it! Megha's energy is contagious, and she hasn't lost her enthusiasm for Bhangra even after several yrs of doing this. She genuinely cares for the dance form, and for her students. This GENUINE commitment shouldn't be taken lightly. I've been to other dance classes in the city with numerous instructors who over time lost the drive and enthusiasm to teach, and it invariably showed in their classes. It didn't help they charged a ton. I've taken both the workout classes as well as performance classes, and they're both equally kick ass (amazing workout+amazing dance form refinement). I now find myself dancing most days on my way to work on the subway, and kick-starting most of my days with Punjabi music :) Come take a class and you won't regret it, I promise! read more

Having always wanted to learn to dance and finally it was so exciting to discover NYC Bhangra Dance school . It's lot of fun with great full body workout too. The school has so much potential bcoz the instructors r great .The teachers are engaging and very inspiring especially their instructor Megha Kalia . They make sure that everyone is involved and actively learning. You really do learn the steps to dance through creative processes that increase one's ability to remember. It's a unique way of learning that really works! My husband and I were looking for someone to teach us a Bhangra routine for our first dance at our wedding- going in with almost no experience. We found a few bhangra classes in NYC on google and are so happy we ended up choosing NYC Bhangra. We met with Megha multiple times over the few months before our wedding and she was always super energetic, friendly, and patient. She listened to what we wanted and taught us the perfect routine for our wedding. My maid on honor knows how much I love Bollywood movies and bhangra dancing and how much I do not like traditional bachelorette parties, so she booked Megha's company to kick off our night. We were welcomed to the dance studio with open arms, smiles and costumes by Megha and her assistant. Our class lasted about an hour, and my bridal party and I learned choreography to an entire song. We had the best time laughing and dancing that I wish I would have thought to book Megha for our actual wedding 2 days later. I look back at the video from time to time to practice my moves. Megha is a fire cracker and a rockstar. I have been attending her Bhangra classes for about a year; even did a beginners performance in NYC Holi Hai 2017 organized by her. She is able to cater to all levels of dance experience in her class, including correcting your posture, improving your stamina, maintaining the grace and yet having tons of workout and fun. Her own energy and spirit itself is such a booster; you will sweat like a monster yet you will have loads of fun and keep wanting more Bhangra! I found NYC Bhangra Dance Company & School through a mutual friend and youtube videos. I reached out to Megha asking her if I could dance with her for the summer, and she decided to give me a chance to see her rehearsals! Megha has the most wonderful welcoming team at her studio. Her fitness class kept me sweating and motivated, and I realized that even after all my training, my stamina can greatly improve! NYC Bhangra! Where can I start .... I decided to join this class about 2 months ago in my pursuit to find a full body workout .. and I got so much more than just that . I have yet to come across some one more passionate , loving , dedicated than the woman behind NYC Bhangra . so full of life and it's the energy of joy and happiness she spreads while teaching the dance . My favorite part of the weekend is going to class. Megha is such an amazing instructor. Her energy is so contagious and her ability to teach and push you learn the steps is perfection. I have attended the Bhangra beginners/intermediate class for 2 1/2 semesters and I'm looking forward to the next one. It's fun, I learn something new each time and I always have a great time. Akshay did a wonderful performance exuding the energy and enthusiasm of the dances. Audiences rarely see the male dancer as a solo artist in this type of performance. Shamefully, we are used to having the female in this role and not used to thinking that the male could hold his own. The dance routine was beautifully intricate. It was a wonderful experience for me. I had no prior experience with Bhangra and dancing isn't my strong point. Megha was great. Every class is a challenge and every class builds you well. All students regardless of level can perform for events. Classes are well organized. A great atmosphere for beginners where everyone is encouraged to learn. Things start off with basic movements that slowly transition into more advanced techniques. I came in not knowing what I was doing and after a few lessons I felt a lot more confident in my ability. Things aren't sugar coated either, so you can expect constructive criticism that helps you take what you learn to the next level. I would definitely recommend these guys for newcomers! read more

I have been with NYC Bhangra for a little more than a month and I am loving it. To begin with, I joined the fitness class which was a workout with dance and music!! So basically its a lot of fun! Megha has a lot of energy and enthusiasm which she spreads around. This review is for all the folks who haven't tap danced in 20+ years... you know who you are…read more Yup... you sure do. Perhaps we told ourselves after that back injury that there was simply no use, there was no way we'd be able to hop around anymore, much less create an actual sound that didn't sound like hooves (at a slaughterhouse). We threw out the leotards and tights years ago. They wouldn't have fit our larger, aged bodies anyway. Besides, we hated them, they never quite fit anyway. But for some reason we couldn't throw out the tap shoes. We loved our tap shoes. And so, they sat, in the back of the closet. Why? Because, in the back of our minds we thought maybe... and then we talked ourselves out of it... but still we wondered... but nah... there's simply no way. NO WAY. NO WAY IN HELL. Until one day... we decide to challenge ourselves. Because deep inside, we needed to see if all was lost. I mean, our body literally twitches when we watch others tapping on tv, the muscle fibers still trying to do what we KNOW we used to do. We have a an actual iTunes Playlist dedicated to "great songs to tap to". We secretly lie in bed trying to remember old combinations. We stalk and save OTHER PEOPLE'S tap dancing videos from Facebook.... we need to challenge ourselves... because of all of this. And because we LOVE those tap shoes. We decide to commit to the challenge, to see if we can handle 5 minutes of it (or 10 minutes... or...?!?) ... and so we make our way to Max McGuier's Adult Beginner class at The Bridge for Dance. Just getting up those 3 STEEP flights is like the ultimate test... the Mt Everest of 20 years of repressed non-tap-dancing. The Machu Picchu of Tap Dance Dreams. We're gonna make it-- HUZZAH!! Our left knee clicks with every step. Screw it... we're gonna DO THIS, you OLD BAG!! Max's sunny disposition can easily light up a room, and he has tough competition because The Bridge is SOOO sunlit and inviting... it is actually a BEAUTIFUL space. None of those repressive, dungeon-y, dingy-windowed, flourescent lit, musty, sweaty, smelly, loud, snotty basement studios that we were used to. YOU KNOW THE ONES. THIS is different, and inviting, and NORMAL, the way a neighborhood dance studio should be, and the other folks in the class... just as warm and friendly, humble and open. It is obvious, we ALL feel comfortable INSTANTLY. There's an instant camaraderie and everyone is supportive. I literally couldn't ask for a better circumstance all around! The acoustics are wonderful... my taps sound like bells, and it is NOT because of me. The wooden floor is PERFECT for tapping. The AC is pumping (another concern that I had... no fears-- it works!!!). There are actual plants growing... greenery... and there's space for them AND us. There is space to MOVE!! (Now if only I could find a space to belt a high C in NYC.... but that's a quest for another day)... Max is doting, personable, gives everyone individual time, he's relaxed and humorous... he drills us on all the basics and then pulls it all together for a combo at the end. He inspires, and is a literal JOY to be around... he makes you want to DANCE, and when you screw up, he asks how he can help you. And he really means it. (Note to self: my mental-computer processing was circa Apple Mac 1996, but my pullbacks were flawless!!!) I am sooo grateful for Max's understanding, smile and energy, as well as The Bridge's warm and inviting atmosphere and crowd... It felt sooo good to think I aced my challenge. After 20+ years, those tap shoes were dug out of the closet and used!! I tolerated the entire hour and I WALKED HOME (I didn't hobble!) afterward.... ... and I will MOST DEFINITELY be back!

My husband and I weren't very comfortable with choreography, especially knowing we'd be dancing in front of all our family and friends. Emily broke down each move in a way that made everything feel simple and natural, and by the time our wedding day arrived, the dance felt like second nature. We started with a trial lesson and then purchased one of the dance packages, spacing our lessons out over the six months leading up to our wedding. We were even able to squeeze in one final lesson right before the big day. Emily was incredibly accommodating--flexible with scheduling and always ensuring coverage if needed. Emily was an absolute joy to work with. Her warm personality, ability to make us feel comfortable, and excellent teaching technique made the entire experience so enjoyable. We were blown away by how well Emily was able to cater towards exactly what we wanted out of our first dance, and the way she lightened the mood with empathy and humor turned our dance lessons (we're not dancers) from potentially dread-able to unforgettable. 10/10 would recommend! In-Depth Review: Before we found Emily, we had tried an intro lesson at Fred Astaire. Unfortunately they seemed more into drilling us on ballroom fundamentals and trying to sell us on big lesson packages right away, and less into understanding who we were as a couple and what kind of dance would make our special day even more special. Thankfully that's when we found Emily! What we noticed right from the intro lesson was that Emily provided a really relaxed and safe space for us to learn our first dance, and ask all sorts of questions about what we could do in the time that we had or in however many lessons we wanted to take. We even showed up with no first dance song picked, and Emily was fully prepared for us to still take full use of that time. Over the course of a handful of lessons Emily helped us with: 1) figuring out graceful, aesthetic choreography that would be impressive and match the song but could also be reasonably learned by two amateurs in only a handful of lessons; Emily showed us different moves at every step of the way as options for where we could go next, and never pushed us into anything we didn't feel comfortable with. - practicing and getting confident with flashy moves like dips and lifts; Emily knew that we wanted something in our dance that would look great for photos, and walked us through moves of varying difficulty while making sure we felt safe the entire time (P.S. these moves ended up looking amazing in our wedding photography afterwards) - determining how much of the song we wanted to dance to and where to cut it so that it felt seamless, and even trimming the song on her own time so that all we had to do was send the cut she'd made straight to our DJ - and so much more that we can't even fit into this review. Our first dance went amazingly and all of our guests were blown away! Most importantly though, we had so much fun learning it, practicing for it, and then performing it on the day of. None of that would've been possible without Emily's patience, expertise and kindness. Thanks for helping us make our special day even more special :) J&J
