We walked in for Temple's First Friday celebration for pizza. A friendly staff and a fabulous Irish Pub made us feel well-received. We had the Iriahman Pizza, chips, and a Beer Cheese and Mushroom burger. The pizza is my wife's favorite, with tangy sauerkraut and a tasty, thin, well-toasted crust. My 18-year-old said the burger was pretty good, which is a resounding endorsement. The rock star of the meal was the chips and beer cheese. The cheese is delicious, and the chips are crisp, fresh, and strong enough to pair with a big scoop of cheese. The place has a super cool feel right from the start. Came to O'Briens today after seeing ads on Facebook of their "SHEPHERDS PIE". First and foremost the bartender Shelby is an amazing bartender/server & very knowledgeable of everything o'Briens related. The atmosphere is very relaxed and right now is the Christmas season so it was very season festive. Now the food.... Let me tell you THE FOOD IS AMAZEBALLS!!! Shepherd pie or really they told me it's actually called Cottage pie is perfect for the upcoming cold months ahead with ground beef and potatoes flavored to the nines. The pizza was something I did not expect to be as good as it was in an Irish pub but here we are and my tastebuds were just taken on a vacation. Definitely stop by O'Briens for some really good food. Walking in just after open, Ryan was kind enough to tell us about what was on tap and make suggestions. The atmosphere is welcoming and there are plenty of seating options. There for the Fish-n-Chips, we ordered two and a Ribeye for Mom. We also ordered Cheese Curds. Everything was well made and delicious. The beer selection was diverse with lots of choices for us. So I venture to you know, the only Irish place around here ... O'Brien's .... On st Patrick's day, arrived at 1115 ... noticed 3 bartenders behind the bar and approx 5 other workers just kinda standing around , they told us to have a seat anywhere ( we were the only ones here ) after waiting 5 mins I'm like I guess I'll go order at the bar.... I ask if they have a Reuben , the guy says ummm is it on our menu? I said I don't know I don't have a menu. He handed me the tiny st patty's day special menu which was unbelievably pricy. No Reuben. Ok whatever. I know I wasn't gonna spend 17 bucks on fish and chips plate ... so I go up again and ask for the 4'dollar live oak Hefeweizen , and ask if they have good coloring to make it green, cause you know. That's what bars usually do ? She looks around Asks around. Says no sorry we don't have the green food coloring ... ok cool? The guy bartender chimes in me points out the 2 tap handles that have the Irish flag on them , saying. Those are our green beers, I said ok cool, what kinda beer is it ? His reply "green beer". went for the first time Saturday night 11/8. had SO much fun!! My daughter and her friend had been a few time before and loved it. I tried it out and had a blast. The live music was really fun... food was really good. my friend's drinks were ok, margarita didn't taste the greatest but she said the Malibu and pineapple was great. My girlfriend and I found our way to O'Brien's on the last "First Friday". We appreciated the live music and after an evening of bar-hopping, this spot made the best drinks we had all night! Both the owner and our bar tender were super friendly. Tips: If you order the fish and chips, have them make the fries garlic Parmesan and ask for extra ranch! O'briens is a very traditional Irish Pub that I was surprised to find in the downtown area of Temple, TX. We stopped on our way home from Austin to Dallas. I would say they probably have about 40-50 beers on tap, and about that same amount in bottles. The bartender seemed knowledgeable on the drinks and made a cheese cake shot for us that I never had before. Yum! The food menu looked impressive and I noticed that they have bands on certain nights. Whenever I travel South again, I'm going to definitely stop back here!! read more

The ABSOLUTE WORST food we've gotten here in Temple. We ordered two Rib Eye steaks with fries. The steaks were COVERED both sides in PEPPER!! The ONLY seasoning on them. SO BAD our daughter couldn't begin to eat it, my husband TRIED scraping the black pepper off...it was so much, he the forced himself to eat what he could. The steak had the texture was a piece that has been pulverized, like Chuck NOT RIB EYE I HOPED to enjoy some authentic Fish & Chips...SO DISAPPOINTED! . LONG JOHN SILVERS FAR SURPASSES O'Briens. The KEY is using Icelandic Cod. Each piece of O'Briens is maybe a 2 x 2 piece of fish...forget the authentic taste, it ain't there. This was an EXPENSIVE lesson, $51 dollars!!! As far as independent bars are concerned, there aren't many in Temple that don't garner that "oh God, we're going to be stabbed on the way in" feeling. If you arrive at O'Brien's after dark, you'll probably get that feeling just based on it's downtown location, sketchy foot traffic and odd parking structure. Parking is limited - VERY limited - in close proximity to the bar, but there is plenty, usually, around the corner or down the street a bit. As far as being a "traditional" Irish Pub, well, they've got some Irish stuff adorning the walls. That's about it. It's a BAR, full stop. It manages to do what bars do best: serve alcohol. Skip the food offerings; they're extremely over-priced, the food service is slow at best and the food is... well, just go to dinner somewhere else afterwards. It's located in a beautiful historic building downtown and has a respectable selection of beer, lager and cider on tap - I'd say between 30 and 40 offerings, and probably almost as many bottled choices as well. While the bartenders seem to be knowledgeable, the wait staff is only so-so... You'll wonder if they're even old enough to be working in a bar, and then you'll wonder where they went... The wait staff is very friendly, they're just not very accessible. It's great for a cold cider - I recommend the Woodchuck Pear or Apple draught Ciders , or a half-and-half Apple-Pear. The Chocolate covered Apple is pretty tasty too: Woodchuck draught Apple Cider topped with draught Guinness. And they make a respectable Irish Car Bomb if you're goal is to get completely smashed. Conversations downstairs usually require shouting a bit to be heard above the din, but if you're upstairs it's a bit quieter. Expect to NEVER see your wait person if you're upstairs; I find shouting over the ledge directly to the bartender is the best way to get a refill. They don't like it, but that's what works. The atmosphere is... well, I covered this a little bit earlier, but it strives to be an authentic Irish Pub and I suppose it does a fairly decent job insomuch as this is smack in the middle of Central Texas... green, white and orange can be found as well as a few Gaelic blessings on the rich, dark wood-paneled walls. It does have a lot of charm. The bathrooms are usually pretty clean and relatively ornate, which is odd and a bit disarming for a Texas pub. There is live music on several nights of the week, and it is L-O-U-D. The high ceilings provide for major amplification, so it's loud everywhere, upstairs or on the floor, but upstairs seems to be a little less murderous on the ears. read more

She didn't even try to humor me and attempt to make it better. Granted it was Valentine's Day, but it wasn't that busy at the bar. Typical Irish pub. Decent menu and pub fare. We went there to watch a K-State game. The bar tender was nice and changed the TV so we could watch the game but did not turn the audio on because it 'wasn't a big game', understandable if the bar was packed-- but there were 5 of us total. Main reason why the 2 rating is that it is a smoking bar! GROSS! Having lived in major cities that have banned smoking-- it seems archaic and unhealthy to have smoking in public places. read more

But what's bringing me back is the history and atmosphere of this place. So relaxing. A place where a gentleman can relax, enjoy his drink and appreciate where he is in the world. Music is tasteful. O'Brian is actually one of the nicest bars in Temple, and let me tell you the competition isn't stiff. So don't hold it to super high standards. The entire bar is carpeted and has an upstairs which provides a decent view of the stage for the live music without blasting your ear drums. There is seating on the floor in front of the stage but sit at your own risk. The beer selection is quite extensive but ordered a Gin & Tonic instead. *Wrinkles nose* Not good. Barely could finish it. There was a $7 cover charge on Saturday night for the live music but ladies got in free. Woohoo. Most likely will come back here when returning to visit old college friends since bar options are slim. read more

I went there for Hallowe'en and paid the cover (that wasn't advertised anywhere) to get in, place was hard to get through, not because of the amount of people, but the poorly designed seating area downstairs. Went upstairs to get a set, waited five minutes to get asked about drinks, no drink menu available, just go to the website I was told, or get their app...yeah, I don't own a cell phone, don't really want or need one, so thanks for that, ordered drinks, and food. Food took forever, and the one order of fries came 20 minutes after we received our order. The food is overpriced for what you get, both the amount and quality of it...looked like frozen food served to us. After we ate, good luck finding a waitress, because no one came upstairs for a long time, finally I asked about a drink and was told that they don't make frozen drinks...what!?!?! The waitress never asked about or offered an alternative and walked away, I went downstairs and waited for ten minutes at the bar to be served, again, not because of other patrons, but because the bar staff was busy talking to each other at the other end of the bar. Finally got my drink, watched the end of the band playing and went to the bathroom as we left, and no paper in the ladies room to use, and the men's was just smelly and dirty...nice. I was also told that this isn't a pub really, more of a concert venue on weekends, so I will try to find a pub to go for drinks around here. read more

Decent pub in the area with a decent beer selection. They used to have a significantly larger number of taps however did not appear to be well-maintained or marked. And sometimes you would find yourself spending upwards of $20 for a pint of an exotic beer. That has improved with better marking and labeling. I had a negative experience with the barkeep who accuse me of trying to rip him off after I return the beer which was obviously old And The keg had been tapped quite a while ago. This left a bad taste in my mouth and I find myself reluctant to return. Hopefully their service improves. read more

The only thing more awesome than the atmosphere is the beer selection. If you're a beer snob, this is your place. If you're not, this is your place. The cute thing behind the bar took me on a beer tour ranging from Kronenbourg to niche micros like Adelberts triple b. What I like about the atmosphere is it's casual. No one is hovering over me asking if I need another the moment I take a sip. Yet, when the glass gets down, someone's there like a beer champion ready to do battle with their beer wall of tap goodness. Two more things: 1. Food was totally surprising. I was expecting normal pub faire. When I say steak, I mean steak. Juicy yummy carnivorous man steak...or East German woman steak. 2. I actually capped off the steak with a scotch and cigar without anyone looking like I had just kicked a kitten. I like kittens. Great place. Considering we're talking Temple, it's an awesome place. Myself being an Irish girl I hate when I see places call themselves Irish pubs and not have pub feel. Anyways, this place is awesome. Rob the bartender was very hospitable. One of three bars in downtown Temple, so coming from New Orleans, we of course made our way there. It has a large variety of drinks and beers though they are sometimes out of the less common ones. A little bit pricey but at least it exists! Have had a few of the appetizers and they have been great. Service is always good and fast. Though I have never attended they have live music on the end of the week nights and from what I have been told it is pretty good. read more

Let me say first off that O'briens does not have any heavy competition in the Temple area, and the only reason it is getting 3 stars is because I happen to have an almost unhealthy obsession with the Trivia set here. If I find it available a little closer in a different locale, this place is going to get bumped out. That being said, it is a bar, and for being a bar, it does pretty good as far as drink selections are concerned. Actually, it does VERY well considering again that it's in Temple Tx. They have plenty of bottles and variety to choose from, but the problem comes in when they don't stock what they advertise, leaving you with that super annoying situation where you ask for something, then you have to pick something else, and they are out of that too, and the next option, and so on. If you don't have it available, just take the bottle down until you do, and be done with it. As far as staff is concerned, I've never had a problem with having slow service, regardless of where my group of friends sat there was a waitress coming by every 5 minutes or so. I would agree that food wise, you could do a lot better by going down the block to the Italian restaurant, or for pub grub, just hit up the green door. One strange thing that I've noticed as far as seating (and this is in ALL Temple bars / restaurants) is that there is no outdoor area. For an area that has pretty decent weather most of the time, it surprises me that they don't have more outdoor venues. While downtown Temple does look (and is) a little run down, I think it would help revitalize the downtown area to have some outdoor music or seating. But then you might have to deal with the Temple railroad gremlins and hobos panhandling you in between swigs from your coors light, and nothing kills a good laugh like a smelly and disheveled man with scurvy asking for some change. Music wise, this place annoys the living shit out of me. I don't know who picks the bands or handles the sound here, but I am beginning to suspect it is a war veteran who has lost their hearing and or ability to recognize when peoples ears are bleeding. This place plays the music WAY too loud, all the time, resulting in songs that even if you like them, are so loud that it is grating, and you can barely talk. This also is a knock on the bands, which are mostly local cover bands that attract devout followers who are blindingly entertaining to watch 'rock out'. The bands for the most part are decent, but the volume levels and overpriced cover charge (10 bucks for a local band in Temple, really?) do them in, as you can barely understand them since O'briens packed an arena sound system into a small bar. Perhaps that's where that exorbitant cover charge went.... Interestingly, these qualities all combine to make a bar that is GREAT for getting shit-house drunk in with your friends, as they have cheap beer, generally good drink specials, and they don't care if you are combatively drinking and chain smoking enough to require the purchase of government carbon credits. Overall, if you want to go tie one on, I would recommend this place. If you want to go chill and have a few beers and shoot the shit on a friday night, go someplace else. read more
