Were given the recommendation to stop here while in Howth, by our Uber Driver and I was very happy we did! We were told they had great fish and chips and each day its prepared fresh with the catch of the day which just so happened to be haddock. It came with peas and tartar sauce and French fries and a lemon wedge. The fish was soooo tasty and incredibly tender, the batter on the fish was very very mild and could have used some seasoning. I also appreciated the fact that a waiter was able to adjust tables to seat our large party and everyone that waited on us was very kind. It's a good spot and if you're in the area like we were I recommend ! The location is also nice and I love how it's decked out with a lot of old and local bar and brewery signage. read more

Fun place after the Howth Cliff walk. We enjoyed some pints and a cocktail. The service wasn't anything spectacular but we weren't in a hurry so it was all good. The beer was cold! Our taxi driver from the airport convinced us to visit Howth instead of the Temple Bar district. Too touristy. he said. Same distance, same fare. Sounds good, we said. In Dublin, a Guinness is a Guinness. What we loved about the bar was the cozy, wood interior and gas fireplace. The conviviality of the locals. I had a lot of fish n chips and a lot of haggis during my time in Ireland and Scotland. One of my most memorable meals though was actually this beef and Guinness pie at O'Connell's. We were seated fairly quickly. They seem to have a decent amount of seating both downstairs and upstairs. Lots of photos on the walls and windows to look out of at the water at Howth. I was pleasantly surprised when the meal came out of the kitchen. The thing was huge! Beautiful, golden, puffy crust. Rich, flavorful, tender Irish beef filling. And served with a heaping helping of hot and tasty mashed potatoes. It was a chilly day and this warmed my soul. Comfort food at its finest. A short work trip ended at O'Connells! Wow did we have a great time. The servers were very nice and helped me order. I'm not sure why it's rated expensive, because it's not. They accept Euro, or a card for all transactions. I would say the pricing is $$. We had a view of the harbor and a cozy place to hide from the rain. O'Connells is a locals hangout and there's covered seating outside, there are two floors and a bar located on each floor. It's cozy, it could be romantic, casual, and lively. I had the seafood chowder and it was incredible!! The best chowder I've ever had in my life! Full of fresh seafood, and very filling. If you get a chance take a trip to Howth, the train goes directly there from Dublin, there are a lot of restaurants (mostly seafood). And some cute stores. read more

A great place for lunch post walking the cliff walk! They have indoor and bar seating, but they also have a covered outdoor space with heat lamps thats super nice. We went on a Friday around 1:30pm and we didn't need a reservation or anything. Large drink menu and then we started with the mussels. Wow! This was my second time at O'Connells bar in Howth I brought my boyfriend because it was his first time in Dublin. And he wanted some Guinness and fish and chips. We came with a coworker. I ordered the Guinness and beef pie which was thick and hearty rich with flavor was definitely full after I had that. That mashed potatoes that came with them had great texture they were very simple not like the mashed potatoes in the u.s that are loaded with all the extras I got some of the beef and sauce and mixed it in to add more flavor. Clam chowder was a bit watery to me but it had all the right flavor and the chunks of the seafood were there My boyfriend loved the fish and chips. The fish was not over battered. Service I had to say was a bit slow and they were not really busy but I think they only had one server available. Bar ambiance was relaxing nice place to come get away from the cold and have some quite conversation with friends. We had decided before even leaving the States that our annual trip to Dublin would have to include a visit to O'Connell's. We went on a beautiful, sunny, somewhat-warm day, and found the entire village swarmed with tourists. Not a bother, though. We made our way to O'Connell's, which was absolutely packed, and were quickly accommodated by a very friendly member of the waitstaff. There were only four of us this year, not twelve like last, but we still managed to order enough for twenty. Between us we had Guinness, wine, chicken tenders, lobster, seafood chowder, a hearty salad, a fish and chips, and it was all delicious and plentiful. Even though this pub is near a major tourist destination, it mainly a pub for the locals. Great food and excellent pints of guinness. Beautiful decor and outdoor seating. One of my go-to places in Howth. The wings have achieved legendary status in the area and I would have to agree, they are exceptional (if you don't mind a bit of spice!). The helpings are very substantial and good value for money too. The staff are really attentive and most of them are local so that adds a nice homely feel to the place. Upstairs and downstairs are 2 different vibes. Downstairs has a more upmarket pub feel and is quite cosy while upstairs is more of a bar dynamic and probably better for a catch up because it's not as noisy and there are some lovely views of the East pier and Ireland's eye to enjoy! Eat here!!! This pub served us the best food we had in Ireland (and maybe on our whole trip to Paris, Belgium and Dublin!)! Walking in on a very busy Sunday in Howth we could only find seats at the bar, but we had a view of the harbor (awesome!) and there was an older group of Irishman playing Irish music (who looked to be just friends who meet up to do so each Sunday...awesome music and ambiance!). We started with the seafood chowder - which was out of this world! We then enjoyed the beer and Guinness stew pie - which was rich, delicious and so full of flavor that I'm certain it's what Irish stew is meant to be...plus the top pastry was light, airy and perfectly cooked...they should serve this stuff at the Guinness brewery for sure! We also enjoyed literally the best fish and chips of my life. The fries were fine but the fish was out of this world - light, flaky and perfectly fried in a delicious batter...it melted in your mouth! All this was accompanied by a perfectly poured Guinness and Smithick's blonde. We ended with a strong and perfect Irish coffee - dreamy! We will remember this meal for years to come! I had done a bit of research before we came to Howth, however O'connells wasn't a place that popped up in my querries. All the restaurants on the pier were over priced and packed. We grabbed a couple seats at the bar at one but no one made it to us in 20 minutes so we left and started walking again. Oconnells is basically the 2nd to the last restaurant on the far side of Howth but it was a wonderful gem we uncovered. My wife had the fish and chips with guiness and was quite pleased with it. I had a few pints of Oconnells Pale Ale, which was absolutely refreshing and delicious, along with a bowl of mussels and brown bread. OMG...these were the best I have ever had. The sauce in which they cooked them in was amazing. So good that I ordered a second. The bread and butter dipped exceptionally well in the sauce. Great place to relax after a day of walking around the quaint town of Howth. It has a nice view of the harbour from the 2nd floor. The downstairs seating area was sort of dimly lit but I liked it that way! We had an Irish coffee & Guinness to drink and ordered fried cheese, hot wings & beef & Guinness stew. I wasn't crazy about the fried cheese (tasted bland to me but husband liked it), the hot wings were exceptional - the sauce not too spicy and tasted so well balanced. The stew had a great flavor as well. Overall my favorite was the wings. The staff were extremely friendly and checked on us often. Had a gorgeous day in Howth - impossible not to. But then....  Landed at O'Connells for a beer and eats and that pretty much ruined it. Misogyny? Racism? Homophobia? Not sure which it was, or what combination. But had to beg for a beer and food took forever. Put it this way: if you aren't a man, white, and/or straight, don't expect to be treated like your money means something. Popped in here after a trek around Howth Head. Decent selection on the menu including the a fresh seafood special, as well as the usual soup and sambo combo. I had the chicken and chirizo pasta... one word... DELISH. Covered in a rich, creamy, cheesy sauce and not at all stodgy. Himself had the cheese burger which also got the thumbs up. Good atmosphere, nice mix of locals and tourists. Would have given this place 4 star only for it is a little over priced... Pub steak is €30 !! But I guess it is Howth :) read more

We were invited by a local and the same group that has been there for years was there playing irish music. Its not a set up music crew...it is locals and different people who come together. Lovely place, right in the center of the harbor area. We went for a late lunch after touring around town. Their Mussels were the best that we had in Ireland, and actually the best I've ever had, period! We all enjoyed our meals, but the mussels stuck out as particularly special. A group of 18 of us (school trip) had such a memorable lunch here. Lovely restaurant, very friendly and accommodating servers and bar staff. It seemed to be a hangout for the locals, too. Prices are about what you'd pay anywhere in Howth and the food is superb! I ordered the fish pie and will be raving about it back home.
