    Beef and Guinness
    Blythe S.

I had a lot of fish n chips and a lot of haggis during my time in Ireland and Scotland. One of my most memorable meals though was actually this beef and Guinness pie at O'Connell's. We were seated fairly quickly. They seem to have a decent amount of seating both downstairs and upstairs. Lots of photos on the walls and windows to look out of at the water at Howth. I was pleasantly surprised when the meal came out of the kitchen. The thing was huge! Beautiful, golden, puffy crust. Rich, flavorful, tender Irish beef filling. And served with a heaping helping of hot and tasty mashed potatoes. It was a chilly day and this warmed my soul. Comfort food at its finest. The staff was friendly and checked in on us throughout our meal. I'd love to stop here again if I ever go back.

Only stopped here for a beer and to hold out til the rain stopped. One might say a typical upscale Irish Pub. I would say the locals like it, it must be good. Perfect pour on the Guinness I would add. Fantastic Irish Coffees. A bit different than down the street. Using fresh espresso vs drip coffee. So it seems everyone has a small difference in how they make it, excellent nonetheless. Friendly service. I'd come back to try the food for sure

A short work trip ended at O'Connells! Wow did we have a great time. The servers were very nice and helped me order. I'm not sure why it's rated expensive, because it's not. They accept Euro, or a card for all transactions. I would say the pricing is $$. We had a view of the harbor and a cozy place to hide from the rain. O'Connells is a locals hangout and there's covered seating outside, there are two floors and a bar located on each floor. It's cozy, it could be romantic, casual, and lively. I had the seafood chowder and it was incredible!! The best chowder I've ever had in my life! Full of fresh seafood, and very filling. If you get a chance take a trip to Howth, the train goes directly there from Dublin, there are a lot of restaurants (mostly seafood). And some cute stores.

Great spot in Howth for drinks. They have a lovely cocktail menu! The service was friendly and fast and the prices were reasonable. This is a typical Irish pub with the lovely Irish pub vibe. You will meet many locals here which is great! I have the gin bramble which was delicious and not too sweet. This was my first time here and would stop here again when in Howth.

I would have loved to have eat dinner here (had a reservation already!). Very cool casual pub vibe. In an excellent location and for whatever other reason, most surrounding businesses were closed so this place was packing up. I had hiked 12km and earned my pint - Rockshore Lager which was perfectly ice cold

A great place for lunch post walking the cliff walk! They have indoor and bar seating, but they also have a covered outdoor space with heat lamps thats super nice. We went on a Friday around 1:30pm and we didn't need a reservation or anything. Large drink menu and then we started with the mussels. Wow! They were seriously amazing, definitely get them for the table. We ordered a fish sandwich which was delicious, and we also got the Guinness beef stew which was phenomenal! The pastry was so flaky and the meat just melted. The perfect spot for some Irish food while in Howth, and the staff is super nice.

This was my second time at O'Connells bar in Howth I brought my boyfriend because it was his first time in Dublin. And he wanted some Guinness and fish and chips. We came with a coworker. I ordered the Guinness and beef pie which was thick and hearty rich with flavor was definitely full after I had that. That mashed potatoes that came with them had great texture they were very simple not like the mashed potatoes in the u.s that are loaded with all the extras I got some of the beef and sauce and mixed it in to add more flavor. Clam chowder was a bit watery to me but it had all the right flavor and the chunks of the seafood were there My boyfriend loved the fish and chips. The fish was not over battered. Service I had to say was a bit slow and they were not really busy but I think they only had one server available. Bar ambiance was relaxing nice place to come get away from the cold and have some quite conversation with friends. O'Connells is a classic I know they have another location in Galway that is where ed Sheeran shot part of his video for Galway girl! Will definitely be back!

Food was excellent! My girlfriend had crab and mash potatoes and I had pasta with chicken and chorizo. Once I saw my girlfriend's food I wanted to trade plates with her. Excellent choice and tasted phenomenal. Will definitely come back here again when I'm back in Dublin.

    Wings and chips perfection!

Best chicken wings on the north side of Dublin. FACT. What can I say about O'Connels that hasn't been said before? Great Craic, unreal staff, ocean views and absolutely fantastic grub? The only thing I don't like about the place is that it's really lacking a "cosy" feel, or any atmosphere at all. But I'm willing to forgo that because the food is just that good! Ultimate hangover cure!

This place was perfect. Great atmosphere, if you are in the mood for good food in a little nicer setting. Best fish and chips I had in Dublin! And the Chicken Wings might be the best I've had too. Worth the visit. Sit upstairs with a view of water.

Stoped here for a few pints and some hot wings

Even though this pub is near a major tourist destination, it mainly a pub for the locals. Great food and excellent pints of guinness. Beautiful decor and outdoor seating. After a long hike in the cliffs, this is a must stop to relax, have pint and a bite. Excellent customer service without being fussy.

Only got there once, but of the many, many bars I stumbled out of on this trip, I recall this as the one I'd most want to see again. The photos cannot do it justice. It's in Houth, a gorgeous coastal village just a short train ride from Dublin. The exterior photo is actually the rear entrance, while the street entrance is down the stairs. Like a secret path to a private lair. Fantastic bar! Stone and ancient wood floors. Built in 1042, I'm told. 24 taps, and all the Irish whiskey there is. A few of the better bottles showed prices by the glass, €15 and up. Sorely tempted to try one, but we had a long day ahead. Normally, an $18 glass of whiskey is just fine with me, but as I had moderated my intake, I had found myself less able to drink all day. Plus, it was about 10 am. Great service from a young bartender, who assured me NO hour was too early to drink in Ireland. Pro tip: Fly into Dublin Airport, skip that town, and head to Houth. Seafood galore, and The Abbey. Bonus review: Five minutes away is Ann's Ice Cream just off the Irish Sea. Worth it for the view. My child, a very particular eater, just loved a huge waffle cone with "Double Cream Vanilla" which is apparently quite tasty. Most notable for the "No Toilet's" door. Grammar be damned.

This wasn't exactly a planned pitstop -- but after he took me trekking through a bog, over a few cliffs and it started raining in a sideways fashion, he probably thought it wise to situate me with some booze inside for awhile. Luckily, Summit Inn is perfectly positioned as a halfway point for hikers/walkers that have started near the train station and are making their long loop back. We enjoyed a few pints, warmed up a bit, used the restroom and were on our way. I highly recommend the hike (there are shorter versions!)...and making this a little respite to gather your bearings before being on your way back to Howth. It's all on its own up here, quite cozy. And, if you get a bit too drunk/full to complete the hike -- there are taxis that seem to be milling about, and a bus line that goes straight back to the town center/train station. So there you have it! Howth is a 25 minute train trip from Dublin on the DART -- about 5 euro return, give or take. Really nice side trip that can be done easily. Beautiful area.

My top two observations are: 1) They serve one of the creamiest Guinness I've had to date, and 2) The place is always full of locals, but quite a few tourists pop their heads in too. I'm not sure what is meant when one says one felt out of place, or that the old men were made uncomfortable by one's outfit. Really, no one here gives a rat's ass how you're dressed or where you're from. They're busy watching darts or horse racing or whatever else on the televisions. Basically, if you're there, you're there, so you're welcome to be there! The locals here keep to themselves, in the sense that they've got conversations going (as one does with one's friends), but they don't give off any sort of exclusionary vibe. The barman treated me no differently than any other person. Really, before I'd finished my first pint I had already come to feel like it was my new favourite neighbourhood bar. If only that were indeed my neighbourhood! Food can be ordered at the bar. They offer selections from the Waterside menu as well as a small selection from the El Paso menu (two neighbouring restaurants). In addition, they offer "bar snacks" from 4PM to 7PM, along the lines of chili, wings, chowder, etcetera. We arrived at about 2:30PM and so had the fish and chips (Waterside) and were really pleased with it. Chips were nice and crispy, fish was big and not too greasy. It came served with a little salad with a quite flavourful dressing, an impressively concocted tartar sauce, and the compulsory mushed peas. Come one, come all, and make yourselves at home.
