It feels like a place that simply never stopped being what it has always been. The old pit, the brick walls, the long tables, the signs on the walls, and the simple serving line all remind you that Fresh Air has been doing this for a very long time. One thing worth knowing before you arrive: this is Carolina-style pulled pork with a vinegar-forward sauce. If you're expecting sweet barbecue sauce, reset your expectations before that first bite. This is a different barbecue tradition, and that's part of what makes the experience interesting. We ordered the Deluxe Plate, which comes with pulled pork, Carolina barbecue sauce, homemade Brunswick stew, homemade coleslaw, a dill pickle spear, and two slices of plain white bread wrapped in plain white paper. That little package of white bread may not sound like much, but it perfectly fits the restaurant. Nothing here is trying to be fancy. The focus is on the food and the tradition behind it. The lady who took our order was very nice and a wonderful example of Southern hospitality. She patiently answered our questions, helped explain the menu, and recommended the lemonade. She told me it was excellent, and she was right. My cousin said the Brunswick stew may be the best she has ever had. I'll let that statement speak for itself. Fresh Air Barbecue has been serving barbecue for nearly a century. Looking around the dining room, enjoying the food, and talking with the people who work there, it is easy to understand why people keep coming back. Some restaurants serve food. First, they were out of chicken, but they made it right by letting us double up on meats of our choice. We got extra ribs and sausages, which were a great swap. The brisket? Tender and flavorful. The ribs? Smoky and satisfying. Sausage? Juicy with a snap. Honestly, the protein game was strong. My only real gripe? The mac. If that container was 12 oz, I'm the Queen of England. lol No, but seriously, it barely had enough for each of us to get a taste and it was only 3 of us. IYKYK, in the South, mac n cheese is sacred - less is not more :). The green beans were portioned similarly, but mac being the crowd fave made it feel way more noticeable. Same goes for the to-go BBQ sauces, they were tasty, but not filled equally. Still, this is a soft opening, so I'm chalking a lot of that up to early growing pains. I ordered two racks of ribs a full chicken a pint of Cole slaw, baked Beans and Mac and cheese. The sides were horrible. The Cole slaw was put in a food processor and chopped so it was like a sauce and overly sweet. The baked beens were mah and the Mac and cheese was over cooked and inedible! After waiting 45 min for my food I asked how much longer. I was told that they were out of chicken and they had to make more. I asked how much longer would it take and the woman responds with I don't know with a blank stare. I asked if she could find out. She came back with they are in the oven and there was no way to know. I sat down for another 20 min and finally was given my order. I went home opened the boxes and to my surprise the chicken was old! Not fresh and recently cooked. What they did was when I complained the cook gave me old chicken that was so dry and overcooked that I could not eat it. The ribs had to be also day old as they were dry and just bad. Short version $80 dollars worth of BBQ that went in the trash. I suspect that this at one time was great BBQ when the father ran it. Now it is run by the son and they don't care about quality food!
