We had the salmon patties with tomato gravy, scrambled eggs with cheese grits and red links. I don't normally drink tea but their sweet tea with a splash of lemonade is a good combo. We went last week for the first time since the pandemic. In the past we've always enjoyed their food and they have good prices. That day we waited over an hour to be served. When we got to the front of the line we saw what the problem was. For whatever reason they had a literal child serving the customers. She was doing the best she could but she was still a child. I got the turkey and dressing. The dressing was burnt and I got one tiny turkey chunk. I like to patronize local businesses so I'll be back, just not very soon. read more

While camping at Indian Springs explored the good options in nearby Jackson. Hunters Cafe was the Winner Winner Chicken Dinner (literally) !!! Nice spot owned and operated by the friendliest family providing some delicious true southern cooking cafeteria style. You walk in and greeted warmly with smiles and sincere hellos, my only issue was what to choose with the lunch special - LOL - My wife picked Fried Chicken and I picked Baked, between the two of us we had several sides (green beans and mashed potatoes) that just complemented our finger licking chicken. The food was so incredible we made a second visit on our way home the next day, the food was even better as we hit it right at lunch rush and super fresh- different selection of sides to include turnip greens that melted in my mouth, blackeye peas and lima beans and of couse cornbread which we topped off with most yellow cake with chocolate frosting. If you visit Jackson and don't eat at Hunter's, then you're missing something special. Miss Hunter makes the best fried chicken I have ever eaten in my life. The meat is so fresh, and so tender, and so savory, and the fried and breaded skin is so good that even someone who usually thinks fried chicken skin is gross (such as myself) will gobble it up and ask for more. The fried catfish is also delicious and so expertly prepared that you can crunch up the bones, fins, and tail like potato chips. I know this sounds savage, but if you embrace it you're in for a treat. The vegetable side dishes aren't vegetarian (they're cooked with bacon and pork fat), but don't let that deter you from digging into the best black eyed peas, turnip greens, collard greens, fried okra, and scalloped potatoes you will ever encounter in this world or the next. The cornbread is good, the hushpuppies are good, and the donuts (when they have them) are excellent. Miss Hunter's cooking is what all other soul food aspires to be. The only problem with eating here is that you will forever after be unable to eat self-proclaimed Southern food with knowing just how far it falls short of what it's supposed to taste like. These guys are super-busy on Sunday after church lets out, so heads up. If you don't want to eat in, the take-out is great. They'll also prepare large orders (like for a wake or for a family Thanksgiving meal) in advance if you call ahead. The to-go cups for sweet ice tea are enormous and probably shouldn't be placed in the hands of small children unless you're prepared to deal with the ensuing sugar high. read more

Forgotten in time, it stands apart as the last destination as you leave the town. It's cafeteria service but prices are so cheap and food so good you won't mind the community tables and faux country decor. The eggs were watery and powdery. The meat were overdone, looked like jerky and tasted worse. In order to cut cost, they decided to fry everything in the same oil as the catfish. So if you are in the mood for catfish tater tots, you are in luck. No coffee was available. We asked the attendant who proceeds to reuse the previously brewed coffee grounds which turned into coffee flavor water. read more

I haven't ate here much the only time I did was to go. I had a chicken biscuit which tasted good. I don't like the surroundings though because there's a gun/appliance store beside it. But parking was good and there's a nice patch of grass to the left which is fun to play on. read more
