I took two bikes in for repair. One was just a flat tire and when I went to pick the bike up, the tire was still flat and the mechanic did a repair on the spot. The second bike needed a rear wheel, and tire and required more work. It took approximately two week for the part to come in and they wanted a deposit. I went ahead and paid in full. The deposit amount requested "was almost as much as the repair. I got the bike back yesterday and noticed that it had a used tire on the rear. I asked about it and was told that my nephew "could get a few good rides out of it." I was not okay with that and then I was quoted $79 for a new tire and I said no way. I was never told that they would be putting a used tire on the bike and was not asked if that was okay. I was referred to this shop by a friend but I am highly disappointed in the service. Not only the service on the bike but when I first went to the shop and was waited on by an employee, I had to tell that employee several times what I needed done. Excellent bike shop and an excellent throw-back to the downtown Raleigh that is evaporating from the rapid redevelopment. Although there's no direct connection to the old North Road Bicycle Co, or Flythe, there's a clear lineage that is good to see. Their selection of new bicycles is limited to the space they have. The new location may offer more inventory options--I haven't dropped in since the move. The service/repair side of the business is top-notch and the staff is very friendly and helpful--no cycling-related elitism detected. There's a ton of other really great things about this establishment--especially related to creating a cycling community. Definitely drop by if you have an opportunity. read more

This is a great shop. The prices are competitive, mechanics are knowledgeable, and they are very helpful in getting you what you're looking for. I've been ordering parts from OCCP to build up a new bike and they've been able to order everything I'm looking for. The shop is stocked with brands you can't always get other places - Bern helmets, DZR shoes. Just ask and they'll gladly get it for you at a good price. They also have stands that you can rent to work on your bike, or if you buy something from them and want to install it yourself before you go, they will let you work on your bike in the shop. It's often lively on Wednesday nights when they stay open until 10PM; it's also nice to see a shop that is open for some hours on Sunday, too. Bicycle brands that they have include -- Public Bikes, Jamis, Bianchi, Cinelli, Soma The staff is involved in bringing together the community and putting on events around cycling. For the longest time I though the Oak City Cycling Project was a gathering place and promoter of cycling, with their sponsored bike rides and how-to classes. In addition to these worthy offerings, its also full blown bike shop for maintenance and parts, bikes, and apparel! If only i'd known sooner, I wouldn't have jumped around from shop to shop until now. These guys are super chill and friendly and moreover know what they are doing. My boyfriend and I recently had our bikes tuned up here after attending one of their free maintenance classes. They were professional with communication, explained their suggestions for work to be done, and clearly outlined the pricing. There was no guessing work from our end. Prices are reasonable to average. I love their mission to educate and promote cycling. We are completely satisfied with our free class and tune-up experiences and will return. They sold me a bike on consignment. I am not in NC so didn't get the chance to inspect personally (which saw me overpay by probably $500...). They sold the bike as "only 6 months old" - they didn't mention that the discs were rusty, the brooks saddle was rusted and the leather collapsed, and rack bolts had rusted in place. Partly my fault for not being able to inspect (which is why this isn't one star), but also feels like lying by omission when I paid very close to full retail for a second hand bike, and the obvious faults weren't disclosed. read more

UPDATE: After having now worked with 3 other cycling shops/businesses, I'm revising my rating now that I know more. This was the most expensive in terms of the service provided. Also, their inventory and stock is very limited compared to other local bike shops. However, I'm still grateful that they were very welcoming and helpful. I was kind of uptight going into a cycling shop -- I'm old enough to be the mothers of most people there and my bike was also older than anyone working there -- made during the Carter administration. I was afraid they would want to shoot it (and me) to put us out of our misery... or at the very least, try to talk me into an "old lady trike" or something like that... Nope -- they didn't bat an eye when I walked in with my bike and instantly assessed it and gave me several options to think about. My bike is a 1978 Vintage Raleigh Road bike that I road when I was a teenager and I preferred it to today's mountain/road bike hybrids with straight handle bars. At the low end of the estimate was a tuneup, new tires, brake pads, handlebar tape, and chain. I asked if putting more modern wheels or saddle etc would be a good idea and they didn't try to upsell me at all, which I appreciated. Gave the pros and cons of each. Expected turn around time is reasonable -- about a week. Yeah, there was your share of lycra-clad college chicks who looked at me with a bit of horror in their eyes (look carefully girls -- 20 years and 2 kids later, and you could be glimpsing your future!) However, I was just glad to be able to get in and out of there with a shred of dignity and my bank account in tact -- not to mention hope for my beloved road bike... Highly recommend if you are not a hard-core hard-body Tour De France type and you just want to get your ride working again. read more

This is my favorite local bike shop. The staff is helpful and not condescending, even if you are a noob. They put effort into getting more of the community to bike. For example, they lead easy weekly rides from the shop on Thursdays and faster ones on the weekend. They host events like the alley cat race. I got pedals from Oak City and they quickly broke due to a manufacturing defect. I expected that I would have to switch back to my old pedals for a few weeks while I dealt with the manufacturer. Great staff, and a cool bike shop! They stock high quality merchandise, and some hard to find parts for older bikes. If you don't see what you need just ask. I live closer to 2 of the major big bike stores (Performance and The Bicycle Chain) in Raleigh, but I always end up going to Oak City for what I need. The other stores have 5 times the retail space, but don't stock essential parts for older road bikes. I called several stores, looking for a specific seatpost, and only Oak City had the new 26.8 alloy seat post that I needed in stock! Oak City also had brake pads for my early 80's road bike that fit my shimano 600 arabesque brake calipers. The prices on these parts have been extremely reasonable! Recently, I recently aquired a bike that has a mis-threaded freewheel, so I took it down to Oak City. Dave stopped what he was working on to put my bike on a stand and pull the back wheel off and look at it. The other 2 mechanics also took time out from what they were doing to look at the freewheel and give me advice, and options to resolve the problem. Oak City has earned my business, so I will be going directly to them for my bike needs from now on. Raleigh is blessed to have this bike shop! Give these guys a shot to help you. When I decided to start training for a sprint triathlon I quickly realized I was going to need a road bike. Road bikes don't come cheap. (Who in their right mind decides to pick up a hobby that is actually three hobbies!?) I started calling around local shops to see if anyone could put me in touch with a used bike and I discovered I am of remarkably average height. Consequently a used bike wasn't easy to come by. I left a message with Oak City and ONE DAY LATER they called me back! They let me know that they had a bike that they could get finished for me as quickly as the following day. The next day I stopped in there with my 18 month old and checked out the bike. Standing there I realized I couldn't exactly take it for a spin. As if reading my mind the fellow working the counter said "I can hang out with your kid if you want to ride it around the block." And I felt like that was a reasonable idea. I had an old 70s foldable bike made in Austria that needed a lot of love and care. I emailed them a week in advance and they got back to me ASAP and told me to bring it in. I just wanted the bike to run smoothly and safely. When I brought the bike in, they greeted me and we talked about possible alternatives and solutions . They gave me prices and possibilities for what I wanted to achieve with the bike. New wheels, new tires, new chains, new brakes, etc .They gave me the options. Fast forward a week later and I was amazed at how the bike turned out and most importantly how well she rode. It was my girlfriends bike and she loved it. Oak city was friendly, professional and most importantly honest. They never tried to pressure me into buying anything I didn't need. These are hard working individuals that know what they're doing. These dudes have it together. It always feels welcoming walking into the shop. They are knowledgeable, accessible and eager to help. When I dropped my bike off for a tune up, David went over what it would entail, how much it would cost and the turn around time. He kindly answered all of my nerdy questions: "How do you true a tired? How bad is it to use any oil to lube a chain? What's your recommendation for a commuter bike?" He never rushed me and actually showed me the setup he uses to true a tire. He was happy to share his passion and genuine in his response. The turn around time was quick and they left a voice message when it was done; they included their hours so I knew right away if I could get it that day. When I dropped off my bike, she was in rough shape: clogged up chain, misaligned tires and patchy brakes. The day I picked her up, David went over all the work they did. She looked great. Riding my trusty steed to work was a total dream: shiny new chain, functional brakes and a smooth coast made biking enjoyable again! Awesome place to rent or buy!! Rented a bike here to ride around Raleigh (only $25 for the day). The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helped adjust the bike for my height and ensured I was comfortable before leaving the shop. After a few hours of riding, I brought the bike back and searched around the rest of the store. Not only do they rent bikes, they sell new and used bikes as well. Really enjoyed my experience here. I had a "quick fix" issue. And they fixed it quickly. Brandon did a great job. My chain was skipping, and it was effecting my gears. I knew the issue could be fixed in a few minutes. I was in and out the door in 20 minutes, despite the shop being busy. $10 for labor. read more

I've only had one experience with this shop and it wasn't positive. Specifically drove a fair distance in rush hour traffic just to see one Public C7 that they told me they had in my size. Once I arrived I found the bike in the wrong size. This was a sale bike, and the only one that I was interested in. Really frustrating to have your time and gas wasted in what seemed like a ploy just to get me in the shop. Their apology didn't do much to help the situation. Get it together fellas. read more

These folks are great. I brought my bicycle in for some service and they took great care of me. I had a broken derailleur and they found a used one to fit it at a very nominal cost. This place is run by a bunch of cool dudes who are really into bikes. And you can tell! They just expanded and moved from a tiny space to large garage and now have longer hours. They are cheap and get the job done, plus they are just genuinely into bikes! What a great place to have downtown Raleigh. I was downtown on Sunday with some friends. Getting ready to do some bike riding but lucky me. My valve stem decided to leak and of course I had a flat tire. Oak City Cycling was about a block away and was open on a Sunday. The shop has a nice clean but classic look to it with tons of bikes and parts. Staff was great over the phone and in person. Really impressed with Brandon and the team at OCCP! Left my new (used)bike with them for a week (since I was out of town)to do a tuneup and service my brakes. They immediately went over the bike with me upon bringing it in and came to the same conclusion as me. The bike needed a good tuneup and could use a new brake cable and housing. This is the best place for bike repairs in all of Raleigh! I had a tire blowout and they repaired it for half what I paid another local place. Here, the guy told me what likely caused the blowout and how to prevent it in the future. He even went as far as to replace the dust cap which the previous place had removed and never placed back on. I was impressed with the selection of products, so I now know where I'm looking the next time I plan on purchasing anything bike - related. We bought 2 bikes and a bike rack for the car here after doing lots of research online. I asked a ton of questions and they patiently answered them all. Helped us pick out the right size bikes and adjust the seats. After a test ride around the block we purchased them. They set us up with their maintenance and threw in some water bottles and racks.
