I think it might be helpful to update this review. COVID essentially ended kid's stay in residential treatment in 2021, and I ended up with still-aggressive 15 year old who needed further care. We brought wrap around services back in, and while schools were closed/remote, we managed him at home with some psych admissions to Del Amo, with in person return to Switzer Learning Center, but transitioned him to a full public school for the last two years of high school where he graduated with high honors and Dean's List. Hang in there, it's worth it. read more

Oak Grove Center is a great place that helps at-risk youth. The staff are attentive and trauma-focused trained. The dorms are clean and organized. The events they hold are amazing and benefit the kids so much. If you're considering treatment based care for your child I highly recommend Oak Grove. To be fair, I attended Oak Grove back in 2004-2005. Hopefully it has improved since then. The reasons I was sent to OGI from age 17-18 was excessive school truancy, multiple psychiatric hospitalizations, struggles with my mental health/bipolar depression and self harm (just to provide context). I didn't mind my time there that much. I don't think anyone really WANTS to be in a RTC and I definitely didn't, but for me it was better than my stays in the psych hospital as far as how staff treated me. I did see my peers proned and I was proned once. In the few instances I saw others proned, staff often had valid reasons (an AWOL attempt, damage to property, someone trying to harm themselves). I realize with teens and children having their rights and essentially autonomy stripped from them though, there is the susceptibility in these types of institutions for abuse and mistreatment so I'm only speaking from my own experience and definitely not discounting or invalidating anyone else's shared on here. OGI's work experience opportunities for teens, in retrospect, were very exploitative. I worked in the cafeteria and a local secondhand store and recall receiving less than $1 each time I worked. I was definitely at that store for multiple hours sorting and pricing donations. The cafeteria work involved more labor and you were expected to operate a big dishwashing machine that used incredibly hot water to sanitize the dishes. That likely would be similar to the kind of work a teen would perform at a fast food restaurant, but that teen would also be paid more than a dollar. If these jobs were meant to be for work experience and to build a resume they should have paid minimum wage. If that was not financially feasible for OGI or the second hand store OGI provided workers to, then make it volunteer work to add to a resume and pay nothing at all. To claim it's for work experience and even go so far as providing payment, but not have that payment be equivalent to what a teen would receive in an actual job is exploitation. While OGI may have reservations about giving teens that much money (especially those struggling with drug addiction), they could place it in an account for when clients leave to educate them on saving. Some of what was considered contraband seemed excessive. For example, Q-tips weren't allowed, even with supervision. As a result I got compacted ear wax and had to go to the doctor who prescribed fluid to be put in my ear to remove the wax. This fluid was administered by staff in the dorm and when I loudly cussed because of the uncomfortable pop in my ear, I had that marked against me, dropping me down a level, which sucked. I also didn't like the level system. It made sense in regards to gaining dorm privileges like staying up late or going off campus, but it prevented me from participating in programs like driver's ed as I struggled to stay at the level needed to take the course. OGI's education program, at least for a high school senior needing to meet CA graduation requirements, was entirely insufficient. I didn't get the full education I should have to graduate high school despite getting a diploma when I left OGI. This I believe was due to being lumped into a class with teenage girls of various ages and educational levels. I gained no education in history, English, science or math. Science and math are two areas I have always struggled in, so to not learn everything I needed to in those subjects has had a detrimental impact on my educational experience now that I am working to complete general ed requirements in college. I recall doing a lot of very basic spelling and math worksheets that were incredibly easy for me. The material provided was not at all what would normally be given to a high school senior, even to one in special education. The special education program I was in prior to OGI was actually teaching me the material I needed to graduate. If you are a parent of a teenager 16-18 and their education is important to you and if OGI still conduct their classes this way, I'd definitely send your kid elsewhere. It was not until I eventually attended community college that I actually gained the education I didn't receive at OGI. It's ironic because my school system is the one who sent me to OGI and in doing so they failed in their responsibility to make certain I received a proper education as well. Hopefully, OGI now accommodate all grade levels and provide the educational materials necessary for high school seniors to graduate. If not, then they are continuing to set up generations of students for academic struggles and failure. read more

My son graduated the day program here and they were incredible. The team here took their time and really got through to my son. They even had an event Under the Oaks, Where they allowed my son to participate and perform during a "play". After he graduated, they sent him a little certificate for his participation. When he would do well at group, They would send him home with little gift cards as an incentive...so thoughtful! He trusted them and Never once complained about going. They even provide transportation.They really are world class! I don't know why people have so many negative reviews, but take it from a concerned parent... I was skeptical upon reading the reviews but seriously none of it is true. Yes kids are restrained if they act in a way that can hurt them And the staff must intervene and protect them. However, if your child is not acting in that manner, they would never do anything like that. My son was there for 4 months and never had a problem and believe me, he can be DIFFICULT. They really do keep the kids on task here and help them tremendously. They keep up on weekly therapy, where they engage the family. They keep up on medication. You always hope you don't have to send your kid to one of these programs. But if I ever had to do it again, Oakgrove would be our first choice. read more

I was voluntary admitted here at the age of 15-16 because the state was threatening to make me a ward of the state due to me missing school and being in and out of mental facilities because I was mis-diagnosed multiple times as a young child and put on so many medications I can't remember the names of most of them. If they can't figure out the issue properly they just bounce around on what medications may work and if they force you to take them , because if you don't take the medications you are considered "uncooperative" and they take away certain privileges, and take you into total psychosis. They just "prone" you and lock you into a padded room that is extremely unsanitary for hours sometimes the whole day. At one point when they were having me switch rooms . They had put me in a room with another "patient" who had been known to try and touch other "patients" in the middle of the night. I vividly remember being woken up by said patient who was trying to have a "tickle war" which ended up with him trying to forcefully remove my clothing and as I was screaming at the top of my lungs which seemed to be forever (in reality it was about 10-15 minutes) until a staff member finally felt the need to come check on my room. By the time he had gotten there I had almost been completely stripped and was holding my boxers on for dear life....... The next day it was blamed on me and I had to be put in another room by the next morning and they had never spoken to my parents about this incident. If anyone has similar stories please come forward. This location should not be staffed the way it is or should be shut down entirely. read more

By far the worst company I have ever worked with. While working in the autism department, they mistreated the staff to get them to quit by making their job intentionally more difficult, reducing hours to 12 hours a week for employees. I was working 40hrs and requesting less hours while trying to further my education. We went 6 months without any funding towards the classroom in which the school profited the most from, did not provide adequate resources for the children, nor required prior experience of staff. They hire employees with the intention of them quitting because it looks better on paper than firing someone. If they do not quit, they make the employee want to quit by transferring them, reducing hours, increasing hours, not providing break or unreasonable work conditions. My supervisor at the Murrieta location had 2 direct family members and 1 extended member working at the same location. The chain of command was all within the family and they abused this for self interest. read more

The staff are abusive and police are constantly called to the facility because the kids keep running away. There are plenty of other programs in California for children with mental illness. Pros: A small handful of staff cares about the kids. They don't last there. Cons: Too many to list. Upper management in the school enjoys restraining children. They're all related with the same mindset. My son ended up being pushed into cement for mouthing off to another kid. Nothing physical. He cried because his head hurt and the untrained staff laughed at him. This is not why I agreed to have him attend the place. Not for staff violence. During a time there it seemed like some staff were wannabe prison guards but with no training! I would've appreciated a heads up on his progress too. Just a sheet with numbers from some inexperienced child staff member isn't enough. They claim to want to help behavioral issues but when staff laugh when your kid is having his faced smacked into concrete? It's called abuse. I don't recommend this place to anyone unless you're looking for grooming to an adult jail. P.S. I'll get the stock reply to this review. Just wait! I attended here around 2010 for about 8 months. Maybe it's just retrospect but I had a great time and met a life long friend there. Be careful they don't just try to put your child on a ton of meds. That seemed to be a trend there. If your child does end up at this facility - do your best to be in close touch with administrative staff to make sure things are going okay. I was a smart kid Back then and bullshitted my way through almost the entire thing. I don't think I was any more 'controllable' after the experience of boarding there, but since have become very successful. Keep an eye on your kids for yourself and do your best and they will end up great. Especially if they are troublemakers. We tend to do the best, so long as we don't end up on hard drugs. the amount of stress this place put me under made me develop anxiety tics, IBS, Insomnia, Paranoia, and an eating disorder! dont ever send your kids here. you will ruin your kids. constant safety violations, 0 privacy ever and there are ants in the cafeteria food as well as hair and mold, there are ants in your shower, in your bed, roaches too, oh and not to mention deadly spiders! the staff there do not give a care in the world about you and will even add on to your trauma. a staff there told me that my life was bad because "i didnt believe in god". The system is a joke. if you do bad you stay longer. if you do good you stay longer. kids are constantly screaming and stealing your stuff and the staff dont care. have valuble items? not anymore! not to mention they force you to work for 2 dollars an hour in deadly weather. I got heatstroke on my birthday from having to sit outside. my job made me clean up people's dirty feminine products :) oh and they dont give you enough food. they give you less food than you burn off with all the physical activity they make mandatory, im talking walking around a gym for 2 hours straight EVERY DAY. you will be sore. you will be hungry. you will be miserable. at one point i had to call 911 just to get medical attention. oak grove if you're reading this you know me as "damien" I hate all of you. read more

We have had very good results with the Wraparound Team. Our team consists of Miesha, Sherice and Pam. We absolutely love them. My son is in the Autism Spectrum and a High School age student. This is the first year that there has been some significant struggles with my son and the Wraparound Team has really stepped in to help not only my son, but myself with learning how to cope with daily stresses. They also work with my son and set little goals for him to reach to build his confidence. During the six months that The Wraparound Team has been working with us, I have seen a big difference in my son's communication skills and self confidence. I truly love these ladies and they really are there for me and my son when those stressful situations come up. If you are thinking about services for your child, give Wraparound a try. read more

Fyi, I wrote a review some months back, just to have them delete it. "They" obviously did not like what I had to say. Its was in regard to my son. Just know that my son came out of there with more problems then he had when i brought him there. He was 12 yrs old...He was there for 5 or 6 mos. I thought I was being proactive...they loaded him on meds for mental issues he didnt have...He was bullied by staff and older patients....somthing horrible happened to my son while in Oak Groves care that my son WILL NOT TALK ABOUT, TO THIS DAY...JUST THAT SOMETHING HAPPENED!! MY insurance decided they were done paying...so I had to take my son home, SCARED TO DEATH ON HOW I WAS GOING TO DEAL WITH HIM!! My son is now 25 yrs old and has more mental problems and is a drug addict...because I sent him there thinking I was being proactive in getting him some help...all they did for him was load him on meds for several different illnesses that he didnt have. And when you give meds for MENTAL illness that a person doesn't have, it messes with them for life. IM GOING TO LOSE MY SON, HE IS GOING TO DIE!! He has OVERDOSED 3 TIMES NOW!! This facility is very unorganized,not a place for youngsters receive help nor guidance, it's a discipline facility. Not a professional environment, its mini jail before big jail,some residents are court ordered that's ...all residents are mixed up ...the ones needing help with ones needing severe discipline! If your youngster only needs intense therapy,he-she will come out needing help in other aspects and will shut down ! This place is horrible! read more

Oak Grove saved my family. They are caring and professional. The care our daughter received while there from October 2016 through October 2017 was top notch. The Staff use rating systems and are very objective. They provide transportation to public school and Dr appointments. The Treatment Team meetings were educational and showed her progress. We really felt a part of the team. Her meds were changed as needed with input from us, not just the Psychiatrist. The family therapy was convenient and beneficial. We were lost as there are not many facilities for teens with mental health issues. If you are unsure about what to do with your child, please consider Oak Grove. Go visit the dorms and see how they treat their clients. You will be impressed! I researched many facilities in and out of state. Oak Grove was by far the superior. read more

I was sent to this facility from December 2021 to March 2022 and had an awful experience. The staff were unprofessional and one staff even made a gesture of putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger with his hand. Often times instead of doing actual therapy we would be asked an icebreaker and then be sent to the gym to play basketball because that's what the staff wanted. It is important to note that this was in the male dorm so it could be different in the female dorm but I highly doubt that. The policy handbook was outdated and I was actually told that "It's a lot of effort to update our handbook." The Drug and Alcohol position was not filled so I didn't receive the help I needed in that area, even though I was told I would. You are treated differently based on your funding. For instance I was not able to participate in the horse therapy because my funding was insurance and usually insurance residents don't stay long. When I voiced my complaints about the outdated handbook, lack of Drug and Alcohol counselor, unprofessionalness from the staff, and a general feeling of just "winging it" I was told "well this isn't a summer camp you aren't supposed to enjoy it." I cannot recommend you to stay away from this place enough. There are so much better facilities that will help you. read more

This "Institute" does not have the psychological support for mentally ill minors. Their interns that act as the "counselor" are not skilled in any "real" mental healing. Once they are backed into a corner and asked to give examples of what they are teaching, they call you a bully and consider you the source of conflict. Our son is mentally ill and in need of constant care. This particular residential inpatient care facility didn't maintain any level of responsibility for his care mentally or physically. They did not make him shower or wash himself. They did not have a psychiatrist working with his prior diagnosis nor did they test him to figure out what his mental state was. They were intent in teaching "deep breathing." A mentally ill child needs more help then deep breathing. Once he was released to our care and we tried to get him reunified with our home and family, we were greeted with the police. Our mentally ill son was upset at coming home so he claimed physical abuse and instead of trying to figure out the truth in our multi family meetings, they reported the lie that changed each time it was told. This particular facility is not going to help your family. It is a holding facility while they eat up your medical benefits. BEWARE AND DONTO LEAVE YOR CHILD HERE!! read more

They took my brother off his medication as a disciplinary measure. The result was him going into a depression while the staff took off for thanksgiving (and would not let him go home for the holiday). The psychiatrist, Dr. Harinder Grewal, is unreachable and would force my brother to have mental health problems for disciplinary reasons. There is no way it is professionally responsible to take a kid off of a medication he needs for two weeks and not be available. I try calling every night and they sometimes make it hard to speak with him. They took away his money, ipod, and video games. The depression makes him unable to do his only passion--playing guitar. The director wouldn't call me back after we left multiple messages on his answering machine. They are irresponsible and not to be trusted to care for the welfare of your children. read more

SHORT VERSION: KIDS AND ADULTS ALIKE SHOULD WALK AWAY, NOW! LONG VERSION WITH MORE DETAIL(Recommended) I have attended oak grove for 10 months now. My first day was when i knew that things would not go well for me. My teacher gave me a warm welcome, then yelled "GET OUT!" at one of the kids. I ended up sitting next to him. He is very cool, and i saw no reason for her yelling. I am not 100% sure, but i think the staff and teachers there can be considered abusive. About a week or 2 ago, i had told one of my friends about my music preference (for context, i tend to listen to Black Veil Brides and Bring Me The Horizon) and a few days later, the staff assigned to our classroom came up to me and started insulting my music tastes. I quote from his choices of insults: "WTF is a Black Vile Bird?", when i explained it to him and corrected him, his response was "Ohhh, that disgusting boyband. You need to listen to real music!" Keep in mind, that this is a fully employed, adult staff member, who is insulting me, a student who is A MINOR, no less! Last i checked, abusing a student or dorm resident was grounds for termination... And somehow this crap goes unnoticed. Whenever i (or anyone else) try to confront the staff and their actions, I can get a few different replies: *Go away, we are talking *Can't you read social cues? We are discussing stuff *We don't have to listen to you *Get over it,quit being such a baby *Figure it out (At which point, when i try to deal with the issue and a student takes a swing at me for being logical, the staff restrain me from defending myself, calling me a a "milieu disturbance". i then get a few punches to my torso and occasionally face WHILE RESTRAINED! When i tell people about this, they either say they will handle/are handling it, and then nothing changes, or they threaten to hospitalize me for being a threat to others. My body is refusing to show any noticeable signs of damage, which doesn't help my case. I bring my phone to listen to my music when it gets to be too much to handle (remember my music preferences above?) and they said that it was okay. However, recently the teacher took my phone because she said my music was "Inappropriate". Now, i want you to go listen to the songs listed below, 1 by each band i listed above, and tell me how that can be inappropriate! Knives And Pens by Black Veil Brides True Friends by Bring Me The Horizon I tend to listen to stuff that reflects my mood. If i am angry, i listen to Perfect Weapon, by Black Veil Brides. If i am depressed (which i am most of the time), I listen to True Friends or Go To Hell For Heaven's Sake, by Bring Me The Horizon. And they say that my music is inappropriate while we have an autistic kid who is allowed to play rap/hip hop OUT LOUD! I also tend to draw on my arms occasionally (skulls, stitches, stuff like that. Nothing inappropriate) The teachers and staff are abusive, the kids think it is a big free-for-all, the "counselors" are faking everything they do for their next big fat paycheck. So please, don't make your child endure the absolute hell that this school puts them (and me) through on a daily basis. I have a school that i can personally say is a hell of a lot better, called Five Acres Therapeutic School. It is based in Altadena, and is better in every respect. Without Oak Grove my son wouldn't be here today. Not only did they save his life, but they made me a better parent. Talk about dedicated... The staff members there go above and beyond often sacrificing time with their own family in order to make sure the children in their care at Oak Grove are cared for and looked after. My son was still pretty young when he was admitted to Oak Grove and the staff that were there in the evening would read him bed time stories because I couldn't be there. The staff were always available when I called to give me an update. Oak Grove wasn't our first facility either. I am an extremely hard person to please overall and every single person went above and beyond my expectations. Their head psychologist, Billie, had a profound effect on our lives. No matter how busy she was or what kind of emergency was going on she always took my call, always got back to me within the day and always followed up with staff that were treating my son. From the nursing staff, to the aids, to the therapists and even the cafeteria staff, they all come together to provide for the children and to make sure they get the help they need. Even though Oak Grove is a facility that handles 75 residential children alone, they provide an atmosphere that is customized to fit the need of the child. My son has never fit the mold for treatment and this is one place that treated him and not just the label of his illness. The director of Oak Grove, Tammy, is a phenomenal woman who gives more than just her time... she eats, breaths, lives and loves Oak Grove. Her daughter is an amazing and talented young woman that helped my son find an outlet for his anger. She, like her mother, loves her job and the difference she makes. Oak Grove isn't just a facility... it is a FAMILY... a family that gives people like me hope, children like my son life... and they NEVER give up because they know that in so many instances they are the only ones that will make a difference in a child's life. I can never repay the generosity of the people at Oak Grove and words will never express my gratitude for saving the life of my child. THANK YOU EVERYONE AT OAK GROVE. There Residential program on Dorm C is a Absolute Joke i can not speak for the other dorms even though they are so similar, They do not follow through with what they say they will its an absolute nightmare to get into the psychiatrist there. The reason i believe there isnt very many reviews bad on this program is because parents can not sit in on the say because of "Confedentiality" so its hard to have an idea what its like but i guarantee you the negatives out weigh the positives i hope you take this into account when sending your child there. I do believe the autism program is doing a great job i do not see the same progress in the dorms. read more

Within these 5 months my daughter has had two major suicide attempts, has awol from the campus and staff will sit there and do nothing. I have spoke to school officials as well and they don't fix any issues a parent will complain about. They lack in communication and supervision. You will not be notified about any small or major incidents. They will insist in helping your child only to make matters worse. They claim they can help your child but in reality your child will only get worse by the day. I've had my son as well attend here for behavior issues and he only got worse. So I had his district transfer him to an out of state school in Utah. And let me tell you that was the best decision ever. My son has done a complete 360 turn around in the out of state school and has succeeded expectations. My daughter came from a level 14 structure facility in Utah to only find herself back to what got her into a residential care facility. She was doing great prior to attending here to transition back to the home. They have completely brain washed her and now is in danger. I've done everything possible for school officials to hear me out. It doesn't matter what the case is. They will try keeping your child here as long as they can. They will destroy there morals, principals and values. They teach your student they have rights and to disrespect parents. They will destroy your child. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE!!! Oak Grove changed my life. I was a resident at Oak Grove for around 9-10 months, and I accomplished so many things during my stay. The staff are AMAZING, I know there are boundaries but I can truly say they are the closest thing I have had to a family in a really long time. They will do just about ANYTHING to make sure a resident was safe, I knew of a couple staff who put there OWN LIFES on the line just to make sure the resident would be safe. They sit on precautions for HOURS watching residents to make sure they are safe. The chase and follow kids all night to make sure they are safe. Most of these reviews that I have been reading are completely ignorant and kinda hurtful to read. This is coming from a PAST RESIDENTS perspective, and I only have positive things to say about Oak Grove. Yeah there was drama, yeah maybe even sometimes fights but what else do you expect? It's a treatment center filled with teenagers dealing with different issues. Even if you send your kid to any other school or facility, there's probably going to be some fights like let's be real. And when those problems do arise the staff deesculate the situation and provide FAIR consequences as needed so the resident can reflect on what had happened. I have been discharged from Oak Grove for maybe 2 months now and I can honestly say I miss Oak Grove. Even since I've been gone they make sure I'm safe. I called one day because I wasn't in a very safe living situation and I called for support and one of the supervisors of the dorm did everything in her power to make sure I was happy and healthy in a safe living environment. I call them a couple times a week just to check in and they genuinely care about how I'm doing. While living at OG I was able to aply for my own job and work, I had a lot of cool privileges because I worked my program. Those staff will bend over backwards to make sure your child is taken care of and safe. Oak Grove played a big factor in who I am today. Every single one of those staff helped me learn more about myself and actually love myself. I'm not perfect, but I'm better than I thought I would ever be. Oak Grove works if you work it. This "treatment center" is indeed an absolute joke and I can say this from personal experience. I spent a total of five weeks in Dorm A with over 20 other teen girls. I was in a very rough time in my life and had a few too many visits to the hospital. My psychiatrist and parents sought out to put me in residential care and this place was suggested by the hospital I was seen at in San Diego. I was looking forward to finally be receiving the care I thought I needed but Oak Grove did not even come close to helping me with any one of my mental disabilities. Instead I was treated as a delinquent in this group home setting.On my first night I was sexually harassed by my roommate and I had to ask more than 5 times with different people to have me room changed. I RARELY saw my personal therapist even when I sent in requests to day after day. I was subject to 6 hours a day of elementary level schooling that counted for nothing towards my high school credits. The food was horrible and came in very small portions. Most of the meals were microwaved and I found myself losing weight from not eating what was being passed off as food. None of the therapy I received was in any way therapeutic or ground breaking in my recovery. Most of the girls there were from juvie or couldn't conduct themselves as normal members of society. The staff are bullies, some manipulative and abusive even. The school claims to have a performing arts program which is their idea of a one "elective" so called mandatory choir course for half an hour twice a week. This place is a detention center for troubled youth, not a treatment center. After returning from my stay, I was back in the hospital in less than 30 days. I was sent to a real treatment center called Center for Discovery in LA after I put up much of a fight and was finally brought to a better mental health state after 30 days of intensive therapy that encouraged expression through art, exercise, DBT therapy, better eating, and individual therapy sessions.
