The oldest public African American cemetery in western North Carolina, the South Asheville Cemetery began as a slave burial ground, and later expanded to become the resting place for congregants of the St John A Baptist church beside which it is located, though any African American citizen of Asheville could be buried there.The last burial was Robert C Watkins in 1943. The first known caretaker was a former slave named George Avery who later served in the war under the Union; though approximately two thousand people are buried in the cemetery, Mr. Avery's monument is one of only ninety-three legible headstones remaining. The markers range from elaborately carved headstones to simple inscriptions scratched into paving stones, with an array of citizens from preachers to soldiers represented among those buried. The ground is quite uneven from settling graves and toppled headstones, and during our visit some recently fallen trees threatened some of the remaining markers; definitely wear sturdy shoes and don't plan to bring strollers or wheelchairs into the area at all. It can be accessed through a short drive through a residential area, with parking in a small gravel lot across from the church. New, large homes are being built around the cemetery but due to its historical status it should be safe from further encroachment, but due to the nature of many of the burials (shrouds or pine boxes), there are many depressions in the earth and the cemetery can only be cleared or maintained by hand - it spent many decades covered in undergrowth from the 40s through the 80s, when volunteers from the church began restoration efforts. There may be larger and fancier attractions in Asheville, but if you're looking for a peaceful place to reflect on the history of the city and of our nation or to research the past, the South Asheville Cemetery is well worth locating and experiencing.

Steve Hundley greeted us with a warm smile and spent enough time with us so we could choose from among the many funeral options there are. He helped us plan for cremation exactly in accordance with her wishes. He placed obituaries in the Asheville newspaper and her local newspaper in Massachusetts. There was a wide range of urns from which to choose. The bottom line, the cost, was very reasonable. Steve was very kind and knowledgeable, and made this part of the grieving process so much less painful. We will always be a Morris Funeral Home and Cremation Care family.

The professional yet personal demeanor of the staff was so very much appreciated throughout his transport from our home to the very last moment upon entering the crematorium. The staff gave me time to spend with my Frank - as if our last minutes were just as important to them. They stood at a quiet respectful distance from us as I said my last words to him. I told them I was ready and they came up to me as we closed the casket and transported him for his cremation. John Monteith allowed me to participate in my husband's cremation as I had requested. I cannot explain how very much this meant to me. We did everything in life together and it was as comforting and appropriate as anything I could ask. The attendants were very gracious and spoke soft kind words as I turned away to leave. I know there could not have been a Funeral Home to carry out my request so respectfully. (Especially during the time Hurricane Helene was expected in the next few hours). I will always remember. The memory is precious because of the personal care all at Moody-Connolly provided for us. We had everything signed in our pre-need arrangements which assisted in making for peaceful arrangements. We had even picked out urns for both of us. Maybe others would think it not necessary but with pre-need planning we could make these kind of decisions and having matching urns was important to us.
