There's nothing like some good ol butt-sniffing and Oakwood Park's dog area is the perfect place for some action! This off-leash dog park is free and nicely laid out. Small dog area to the left, area for the big dogz on the right, double gated entry to prevent any Great Escapes. Inside Oakwood Dog Park they've got pine chips laid down and LOTS of space and trees for doggie nirvana! There's also some bowls and water if your pooch gets thirsty. As for the clientele, most everyone was pretty well-behaved outside of a couple of over-excited canines. There's wasn't much nipping or territorial behavior and my friend's smallish beagle got along fine even with the bigger ones. They've even got some lawn chairs for owners to lounge on and a sizable parking lot. If you've got a doggie, great space to visit, even on a hot sunny day with all the tree cover. Maybe it's just me, but I am not a fan of just dirt & some mulch as a "dog park." I had a 16+ Maltese who I would take to Millbrook Park & same scenario. My new Maltese puppy is now venturing out with me & we decided to check out Oakwood. While there is much more shade to this park, I was disappointed in SO MUCH DIRT. Poor Cooper was filthy when we left there. (Yes, I understand dogs are meant to get dirty) Really the only plus was the amount of area for play - on both the small dog side & the large dog side. read more

Ok, so I've been putting this off because I don't want to jinx myself, but here it goes. I really like Oakwood, like, a whole bunch. It's huge, and they do have a smaller section that can be utilized for smaller dogs or dogs that do not want to be as social. They say it's not 'if' your dog will get hurt at the dog park, but 'when'. I've had good days and not so good days with some owners and their furbabies, but if you keep an eye on your pup, and he's well trained, this can be a great spot. I always make sure too to speak with the owners of the pups who are interacting with mine. You get to know them and their puppies temperaments, it builds rapport and keeps you clued in with who your pup is playing with. I'd be the same way if I had a human baby on a playground. This park has an ample supply of poop bags and waste bins, as well as fresh water and plenty of buckets so the dogs don't go thirsty. There are also chairs and benches so plenty of seating is available. The park as a whole is a really great set up and location. And there have definitely been more positive than negative experiences. read more

Very suitable dog park.. The area is large and there is a separate area for smaller dogs which I believe is pretty much the norm. Oakwood is pretty well kept with plenty of water buckets for the dogs and chairs/benches for owners. My favorite dog park is the one in N Raleigh at Millbrook Exchange because they have lights and it is the most well kept of the ones that I've seen. However, the location of this one is tough to beat (especially for me, since we usually just walk!) so we go here probably 90% of the time! read more

So far, this is the best dog park I've found in the Triangle. My pup LOVES it here because there are so many playmates for her to run around with. I love it for the same reason she loves it: there are always dogs. I've gone at different times, on different days of the week, and found a solid handful of dogs to several dozen dogs. A very nice dog park hidden away in historic Oakwood! Taking advantage of last week's nice weather the pup and I decided to try this park over our usual spot at Millbrook (I used to live much closer to that park). I was happy to find a very chill, but nice, park filled with happy pups and mostly responsible pet owners. No one said anything against me bringing my tiny pooch (a toy poodle) in the big dog area which is something i've been fussed at in Millbrook before (the little dog area is always empty which is a bummer). Louie has always preferred playing with bigger dogs, but I am careful to stay close just in case. A few pups were over-excited seeing such a small dog (thus scaring my pup a bit), but they all meant well and Louie was fine within a few minutes! The park was also very clean and stocked with doggy bags and water. All in all we'll definitely be back soon! read more

We love this place! Lots of shade, lots of room to run. Most of the pet parents are cool. Occasionally you will run into an irresponsible parent with an unaltered aggressive male, but for the most part everyone is responsible. I'm tired of hearing the negative comments about pit bulls from biases owners. I have two and they have never hurt anyone. The important thing to remember, is that this is a public park, and you come here at your own risk. read more

This is definitely one of the better dog parks in we've seen in Raleigh. There's a smaller section for the smaller, less aggressive dogs, and a HUGE space for the bigger dogs to run around. We've been a couple of times now and met some of the regulars who all seem really nice. In general it seems most of the people who go are good about cleaning up after their dogs and the place looks well maintained. There's a few buckets of water spread out for the dogs to drink from. It's so fun watching the dogs run around and play. If you've never been it's worth a look! read more

One of the best dog parks I've been to, and definitely the best since leaving California. It is pretty big, shaded and lots of seating. I drive 30 minutes to take my two dogs here every weekend with my daughter (3y/o) and everyone has a good time. Most of the dogs and owners are pretty laid back, when some of the dogs get in a frenzy people will intervene and all is well. Can tell some people are put off by how busy it is but that's why we come. There's a few parks that are closer but they are not as nice and don't have many furry friends. If you're anxious and want good order and/or show dogs, this isn't the park for you. read more

Being that this was the first dog park I have EVER been to, I was not disappointed! Free to the public (sunrise to sundown) and your dog(s), as long as your pup is at least 4 months old with a Rabies tag attached to their collar. Ample parking lot. There's a double-gated entrance (awesome for dogs who try to escape). You lift latch, pull open, enter with your dog(s), and choose whether you want to go to the "Small Dog" or "Large Dog" yard (each has separate latched door). Unfortunately, there was only one dog in the Small Dog yard (there were small dogs in the Large yard, though). I ended up choosing the Large Dog area because I wanted to socialize my puppy with a LOT of dogs. Well, the moment I set my unleashed puppy down, he got SWARMED by about fifteen dogs (including a massive Great Dane) -- backed into a corner. Of course, he was TERRIFIED, so he snarled and barked at the dogs to get away -- meanwhile, the dogs' owners all stood around amusedly. Instead of being responsible owners and guiding their dogs away from mine, they just stood there, commenting about how mean my dog was. Super peeved, I had to scoop my pup up and move him to a more central location, so he could have some space. After that brief fiasco, everything was mostly okay -- sans a couple dogs chasing my poor puppy around. My puppy spent most of the hour-and-a-half hiding under my chair and other owners' chairs. Most dog owners were friendly and chatty (they all seemed to know each other), with a few antisocial owners who sat quietly, reading books (with their dogs straight-up chillin' at their feet). There's a HUGE amount of space for dogs to romp around, lounging chairs, tables, and a plastic pool (next to a huge muddy puddle) -- all under gorgeous shade. There are buckets of water abound -- perfect for taller dogs. If you bring a smaller dog, be sure to bring your own bowl. The grounds seemed pretty well-kept (didn't spot a pile of un-scooped poop). Be sure to remember to spray yourself with bug spray -- there were mosquitos everywhere! All and all, I was happy with the dog park, but disappointed that some owners weren't responsible. Some overly sensitive two-legs with little understanding of dog behavior (like not all growls are threats, herding nips and actual bites are totally different, it's not automatically the big dog's fault when a little one gets into it with him) just from my observations but most are okay and the dogs seem to have a great time so I can't really complain. read more

Please pick up after your dog!! Every time i go here, i step on big pile of fresh dog poo at least twice! And get your big ass dog out of the small dog area. It is for small dog as it said not for the place to train your vicious pit bull. Racism is the pits!! Love that this park is bull friendly and leash free. My 7 month old pit puppy has never had an issue with another dog, and I hate the bad reputation that the dogs get because of their breed. No, they don't play like multi-poos but their form of play is safe and fun for them!!! I moved recently from PA to NC. My gf and I got our first dog a few months ago. Updated on his vaccinations we decided to socialism him. We have been trying different dog park and narrowed it to two. This one and another close to our house. In our past visits we liked this park and found the people very nice and attentive to their pets. Well that changed. Dog parents started to bring more aggressive dogs and started to neglect them around the park. My pup got attacked twice in two different visits. We thought it was due to the excitement of running around. Until we noticed that no one was claiming these aggressive dogs. Parents would just stand around and keep talking and chuck it up to "play behavior" well I do dog day camp and those are not "playing behaviors. I went there yesterday afternoon and found two pet parents openly drinking and chatting it up while their dog "roughed" played with mine. In two occasions I had to pull their dog off of mine and they would just laugh. My dog has bite mark on his lower back. What kind of parents go to a dog park and drinks? More, what kind of dog park allows pet parents to drink? As of a result you definitely lost a pet parent and I will advice future pet parents to not bring their pups there unless they want neglected dogs attacking their dogs. read more

This is a great, free, dog park. But you just have to be smart about it. I don't come when it's crowded and if another dog is aggressive - we leave. I take a minute to look around at the other dogs (and owners!) behavior before my dog goes off leash. There is lots of seating and the trees keep it cooler here than in full sun. I go at off peak times and have never had a problem. Just like a playground for kids there is sometimes a trouble-maker or one bad apple that ruins everyone's time. Just be aware and be ready to leave if necessary. read more

I am a frequent patron of this park and love it- but heed these warnings.... 1) "Regulars" will sit around and chat while their dogs just run wild. Understandably, the seating is great and convenient, but keeping an eye on ALL dogs is crucial. 2) Use your judgement when picking a time to go. I avoid high traffic weekday times (4:30-7pm) and will never set foot in the park on the weekend. The larger the play group- the harder to control the pack. 3) For those with younger dogs ( less than 2 years), there are known outbreaks of Papillomas in the area- so the community water buckets can carry this virus. Make sure you are checking your dogs regularly and keeping them up to date on shots. 4) DO NOT BRING YOUNG PUPS. From my experience, the 5-6mo range is the earliest someone should be introducing their pup to so many dogs. Plus, your precious pup will be up against LARGE dogs who want to play rough, don't get upset if my fully grown dog wants to run with your six week pup. 5) Bring bug spray in the summer. Lots of little critters. However it does stay about 5 degrees cooler in the park- so that's an added bonus! 6) If you bring children, know that these dogs will RUN and JUMP. This is their park. To conclude, be a good dog parent. Use good judgement. Keep an eye on your dog. Enjoy this free, downtown park. read more

I'm so glad to have a good dog park near me that is free! It's great that they have water in buckets everywhere for the dogs but a lot of dogs won't touch it unless its fresh and my dog is too short to reach his head in the bucket if he wanted to. Watch out though - don't let your dog chew on the bark. I'm pretty convinced that's how Odin contracted his second bout of round worm. I have been to several dog parks in the area including the one in Cary and I always find myself referring people to this one if they are in Raleigh. The large dog section is a true large dog section and not just a divider with the same amount of space as the small dog like you see in others. It is also nice how covered in trees the park is so it doesn't get too hot even on the hottest days. it would be nice if they regulated vaccinations more strictly but if it turns into the Cary dog park where you pay to go and receive no maintenance then no thanks. read more

After 13 years of attending this park, I have had enough. The incidences, especially with pit bulls, have gotten increasing worse. The brutal attack on the corgi in November was scary enough. Today both myself and my 8 mo old puppy were bitten by a pit bull, with the owner looking on and doing nothing. Luckily neither of us were harmed, however, the lack of responsibility taken by this owner was unacceptable. We proceeded to the small dog park side where there were 3 other pit bull puppies, which I soon learned were both sick and only 4 weeks old. Yep 4 weeks.
