The bulk is this rating is based on staff, customer service always makes the place. The girls are nice and informative. Tanning salon front desks are generally staffed by high school to mid 20's girls, some, if not most I have found can be snotty or have a lack of professional communication skills. I have not found this with the girls at Desert Sun in Yelm. I prefer this location to the other one I go to in Kirkland.

According to her you must be 18 to get a spray tan or have parental consent by signature. Even though we had already gotten a spray tan there last year and her employees did not ask for a parental signature. I asked if this was a new policy because I was confused due to us not having this issue last year. She replied "No I've been the manager for 8 years" with no further explanation or customer service and a rude tone. So clearly she does not train her employees correctly and make sure they are following the law. When I went into another location later that evening with my mother to sign the form the lady there told me that the manager from this location had written a note on my account saying I had attitude and to make sure I had parental permission before spraying. Completely unprofessional behavior on her part and dramatized our interaction because I was not rude to her just confused and looking for clarity. I will never go back to this location and I advise others not to as well. The tumwater location had fabulous customer service, very friendly, good communication skills and helpful. Let me assure you, it's not the polished trendy Desert Sun by any stretch of the imagination, but it does get the job done and the girls at the front are very nice and very knowledgeable about tanning and lotions. I don't even tell them my name when I go in at this point so I feel like a valued customer. Both a blessing and a curse is that the place can get really hot at times. When I'm freezing cold it's wonderful to walk in there and get warm finally, but during the warm months, I hesitate to go tanning because it's so hot in there. All in all, this is a nice little local tanning shop that's an alternative to the big chain.
