We were feeling snack-ish and realized we hadn't had fish and chips the entire time we've been in Scotland so we decided to stop by Oban Fish and Chip Shop, hearing that it's the best in the town. We sat in instead of doing take out because we had been out in the sun all day, on the water. Our server was nice and didn't seem to mind that we were sharing food, instead of both ordering a meal. We shared a large portion of haddock and chips and man it was large. We were just looking for a snack but this could have been a whole meal for the both of us. I'm curious to how big the regular portion is. I didn't mind though, I needed the carbs to soak up the whisky I was about to have. The fish was fried perfectly and it was moist and delicious. So very, very fresh. The chips were good. I liked their tartar sauce a lot, and I'm not a big fan of tartar sauce. The place is clean and cute, with a lot of natural sunlight in the back. I was shocked at how clean the bathroom was. It may have been the cleanest restaurant bathroom I saw on our whole trip.
Amazing service, with outstanding speed of the best fish and chips anywhere! Strongly recommended for the freshly caught dinners no matter if you're eating in or via takeaway! I has the scallops, and this was the best I've ever eaten!
We were told that this restaurant has the best fish n chips so we decided to give this a try. I ordered a haddock and a cod fish n chips plates that came with fries. Mu mom and I really liked it. My wife wanted to try the spicy bean burger but unfortunately the entire vegetarian menu was unavailable and we were not informed before being seared. So for the vegetarian folks in the group. Onion rings were ordered which was decent. I would recommend this restaurant for the fish n chips

This place came highly recommended via my tour guide on my trip to Oban. First and foremost, I will say this is definitely the best fish and chips in town. Portions are huge and everything is deliciously fried. They do have options that don't include seafood if it's not something that's your favorite. The waitress was sweet and stayed on top of everything, despite being so busy. I ordered the regular prime haddock with chips. My food was brought out promptly and included a side of Tartar sauce. My regular sized piece was quite large and I was very full when finished. It was light and crispy. Everything overall was wonderful. I highly recommend if in Oban!

They had tables but restaurant portion closed already. I'm assuming around 8 since there were people still eating. Right when you walk in, you see the counter and the chippy making the food. I liked that the menu had a lot of different things on it and with fish and chips - you can do either cod or haddock. I decided on the cod and my BF got the haddock. We also got two orders of chips & cheese (cheese fries). They had a few chairs to sit and wait. When they finished, they asked if we wanted salt or malt vinegar. Of course. We went to our car to stuff our faces. I got a good size piece of cod for £5! It was sooo good. It was crisp and the fish juicy. The fries were delicious. The cheese was so good and the order was huge so we could've shared one order. Definitely a proper place for fish and chips.

Delicious scallops and chips! We chose to try scallops, instead of fish, since we had never have fried scallops before. They are huge and juicy inside. The chips are also huge and soft inside. The seafood chowder is hearty delicious. You can eat in or get a take away and sit by the water to enjoy (both food and view). read more

This is a busy fish and chips shop in Oban , Scotland. This is their specialty and it's great. Fish is really crispy and tasty. The chips ( fries ) are great too and the mushy peas top it all off well. We had a nice table and enjoyed our lunch there. read more

Absolutely the best place in Oban for fish and chips. Everything here is cooked to order, not held in a window waiting to be ordered. Many variations on the classic fish and chips from haddock to cod to the day's fresh catch. Additionally there are large platters to be shared by multiple people that allow you to try multiple different items from the menu. The staff is very attentive and more than happy to meet any request. The shop is a bit of a smaller place, but if that bothers you all the wonderful menu items are available for take away. The one item that stood out to me is the chowder. In a large menu it can easily go unnoticed. Do yourself a favor and order a bowl. It is rich and creamy, with a generous helping of cod and smoked haddock. The smoke is a very nice touch, offset by the fresh herb garnish, and brought together with rich creamy broth.... it's absolutely amazing. One of the best chowders I've ever had. The search function did not lead you astray, this is absolutely the best place in town for fish and chips! read more

Ate here 3 times in the 4 days I was in Oban. The standard cod is great. The local Hake is delicious. The regular size is enormous. I would get the large to split between two people. read more

Wow. Just wow. The chips were thick, almost like potato wedges in a way, and the fish was good quality! You can choose your kind of fish, as well as a small or large fish size. The portions are HUGE. My partner and I could have easily shared, but we got overzealous. The calamari is a must. Street parking difficult to find. You pay extra for tartar sauce and ketchup. Sit down or take away options available, although it costs a pound extra to sit. read more

I've been wanting to try this place ever since I saw it on an episode of VICE's Munchies. See the episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CJQph5gLeE In that episode, they catalog the rivalry between Oban Fish & Chip Shop and Nories. Sadly, I did not get to try Nories to do a head to head comparison. Inside Oban Fish & Chip Shop, there is more seating inside that I would have expected. Most fish & chips places I've been to like at Benes on Edinburgh's Royal Mile have no seating inside at all! It's take away only. The menu here is actually quite diverse. There were several specials written on the board plus mussels, burgers, lasagne (?), mac n' cheese, savory pies, black pudding, sausage, and more! For the fish & chips itself, you can choose either cod or haddock. We ordered a large haddock (£11), which was gigantic! It easily fed two very hungry adults. We also ordered the scallops (a special on the board), which was pricey and only came with six scallops (I ate one before snapping a photo). But the flavor was impeccable. They were ridiculously fresh. The vegetable side was steamed and unseasoned :/ Everything tasted very good, though nothing was mind-blowing. The fish & chips was solidly 4-star in my opinion. It was not the best fish & chips I had ever had, but it was very close. read more
Great food at reasonable prices...so good that we ate here twice during our 3 night stay in Oban. Friendly service and the cook is quite a handsome fellow too. First time: £6 crab claws and seaweed salad...delicious, healthy, and a great value! £12 kilo of mussels in Marinière sauce...delicious! The broth is amazing! £6.50 chowder...good, but I've had better. Second time: This is the best deal in town and probably the BEST value anywhere in the UK! And a very delicious one! £10.50 Fish Tea Special...a hearty serving of fish, chips, peas, bread, butter, and tea or coffee. Take Away prices are significantly cheaper too. read more

It's a fish and chip restaurant. I have no idea what all the excitement is about. My haddock and chips were well executed but was bummed they didn't add enough salt and vinegar. Certainly not transformative. Staff were friendly, service was quick read more
Came here two nights in a row while staying in Oban, and both dinners were fantastic. In total, we tried the mussels (1/2 kilo order which amounted to about 51 mussels), fresh cod fish & chips (large order, which was massive), lasagna w/ chips, Steak pie w/ chips, and the seafood chowder soup. Everything was delicious and well prepared with fantastic service by everyone. They have a takeaway counter in the front, and table service in the back area which stays open until 8:30pm (the takeaway area stays open longer). The sit down area is comfy, well lit, and welcoming. The servers were all very attentive, super friendly, and fast. They have free wifi within the restaurant as well. The food was fantastic - we had no idea how much a 1/2 kilo of mussels would be but holy crap was it a lot. Both the mussels and the soup came with delicious seeded bread. The fish & chips tasted very fresh (never frozen) - we got the cod, which after asking about the difference between cod and the haddock, we were told that the cod has a slightly fishier taste for some, but it is marginally healthier with the saturated fats. Can't recommend this place enough - definitely a place to stop by while in Oban! read more

Absolutely fantastic stop in center of Oban for fish and chips! The lightly fried fish batter made for a delicious late day lunch prior to heading back north for the night. One note, the "large" plater is big enough for two people to share! read more
