Tiny restaurant close to parking lots. There's two shops next to each other- one is take out and one is dine in. The tiny restaurant has a few tables on the first floor and a few on the second floor. We sat on the second floor. Servers were nice. Quiet. I had to ask for a lot of things at different times (eg napkins, spoons, plates, water refill 2xs, etc) but I know they were busy. We ordered a plate that had 3 different grilled fish on it- it was good. Tiny pieces of fish but good. We also got a fried platter (eg fried shrimp) which was also good. I really liked the chips - my partner wasn't a fan- he said they were too mushy but that's how I like my chips. Tartar sauce is REALLY good. The toffee pudding was OUT OF THIS WORLD AMAZING. Ya know, it's funny. I looked for an open restaurant as I came back into Oban on the ferry. It gave me a few choices, one of which sounded good: Oban Fish & Chips. Except I walked over there and found nothing, just open waterfront. Whoops. Fortunately, I walked right past this other open restaurant that also had fish & chips at a reasonable price, and more importantly, HAGGIS! I can tell you now, they should rename to Fish, Chips, and Haggis. Because this fried haggis sausage is da bomb. I think when they named that one sandwich "da bomb", they were wrong. It's this. Delicious haggis, perfectly deep fried, just the right amount of breading. Classic, timeless, Scotland. The dinner includes plenty of chips, light fried, not dripping with oil - some of the best I've ever had. So get that, not the single. In the end, the only downside is it's takeout-only. This place has indoor dining and take out. People line up for take out fish and chips, so we figured it must be good. Dining inside was nice, where they had a full menu, but we both got the fish and chips. I'm getting sick and tired of chips, but I enjoy the fish, and the restaurant offered it with different fish varieties. I could not give five stars, though, because we ordered Cole slaw as a side. In the USA the Cole slaw we are used to is a nice bunch of cabbage with a slight and light dressing. I don't know what was in this, and perhaps in Scotland it is how Cole slaw is made, but it appeared more like mayo soup. I couldn't eat it. Go for the fish, and the chips if you aren't tired of wedge fries, but avoid the slaw. read more

We sat down at our table and ordered a bottle of Merlot. After it was poured and we held our glasses up to our noses, the wine had a very strong sewage smell. When we mentioned the wine was not good and had a horrible smell the waitress took the bottle to the manager. He returned to our table to tell us he smelled the wine and tasted it and it was totally fine! He would not allow us to try a different bottle. Shortly after that we asked if we could order and purchase a different bottle and he said no! He asked us to pay for the original bottle of wine that we did not drink and then leave their restaurant! Like others have mentioned, the haddock, fish and chips was absolutely amazing. Hand cut chips, and the crispiest haddock I have ever had. Plus, really good tartar sauce. The white wine list was short, but I found a really nice one. Would have loved to have had one of the puddings but the fish and chips sufficed. Service was friendly and very quick. We asked locals at coffee shops and gift shops where they would get their fish and chips. Most said George Street Fish Restaurant. They were correct! We ate in the sit down restaurant portion; as they also have a walk-up take away that was very busy. Nice table sitting, good service and a selection of the various types of fish you could choose to have you fish and chips made from. The server explained the differences. Eat here. You will thank me later. This place always has a line outside; that is your first clue that it's good. The wait is never long; less than a minute in line and then five minutes while they INDIVIDUALLY PREPARE your meal. The fish is very fresh. Fresher than you would ever expect. The batter is like a tempura. The chips are OK, and are better than the typical frozen French fries that we're stuck with in the States. (Although the ones they offer are originally frozen too) A "supper" includes fries, er, "chips". The person taking your money will offer to put salt and malt vinegar on your order. I recommend that option. Whatever you choose will be less than $10.00 and better than you would expect. Take the box (they place your order in a cardboard box) back to your hotel room and chow down. (We washed it down with wine from the nearby Tesco) You can easily spend double the money for dinner, but it won't be any better. Don't forget to take some free napkins. You'll need them. read more

The best fried plaice I've had since I was a child and spent my summers in west England seaside towns. We don't get plaice in the United States - light, creamy flat fish that somewhat resembles flounder but just cannot be found on the other side of the pond. In my opinion, it's the best fish for battering and frying because it's thin enough that it cooks quickly and doesn't dry out - the ratio of soft meat to battery crunch is always perfect. George perfected this in the most endearing way. Light as a feather, moist, and accompanied by perfect chips. Douse in malt vinegar, add a few generous shakes of salt, and you have heaven. Fantastic fish restaurant by the water in Oban. It was a chilly day when Mary and I popped in for some lunch, and the fresh fish smell as we walked in was very nice indeed. Mary just had chips, which were absolutely fantastic- freshly cooked, hot, crispy. Just excellent. I had had quite a lot of fish in the preceding days, so I decided to go for haggis and chips on this occasion, which was very tasty. However, I wish I did choose some haddock or cod- the fish looked and smelled amazing. The constant flow of customers into the place is testament to the quality of food at a reasonable price. Before we set off on our train journey back to Glasgow we decided to grab a fish supper between us. We decided on the cod which was £7. The container it comes in is about a foot long.... And the fish was as long as the container and pretty much as wide. The fish was cooked to order and they had just popped a fresh batch of chips on andimwas well worth the wait, it also came with a big wedge of lemon. We sat on the sea front with a ton of people who had also had the same idea and every bite was delicious, my only complaint is they provide you with those teeny tiny wooden forks that are useful for nothing but annihilating your food. I couldn't see and option for paying extra for a bigger fork so we just ate with our fingers and dusted off the wet wipes :-) every bite was delicious, the fish was crisp,on the outside and succulent and the chips were perfectly cooked and lovely and fluffy :-) another one added to the list for our next visit. read more

Word in Oban was this is the best fish 'n' chip shop in the town, and certainly going by the amount of people sat round the harbour wall eating them from the distinctive cardboard box/tray, the shop must be doing something right! £6 for battered cod & chips (which seemed a little steep - but my good lady tells me is about the going rate!) but they were beautiful! Large tasty fish in a light crisp batter - initial thought that chips portion was skimpy, but guessing size of box makes it look less than is, as was just the right amount to eat (personal note - now into 'new potato' season, which I don't think make as good chips - but these were as nice as 'new potatoes' taste chipped and fried). Staff jovial & friendly, and very efficient - this is fast food after all - taking your order as soon as you enter the door, even when it was very busy. No seating in Take Away - but harbour wall allows limitless 'covers' and the best views! read more
