Every since the Bookworm closed some years back, I was looking for an affordable used book store…read more This definitely scratches that itch though this store is perhaps not as good in niche areas like science fiction and 1970s and 1980s pulp fiction. But that may be just reading habits are changing. The book operates on donations and over the past year I've donated probably a dozen books to them. Some books get tossed if they can't get sold but it is great to see the books getting reused to help the library system. I'd absolutely continue to donate my books here when I need to and absolutely would recommed going here for all your paperback needs.

The volunteer staff does a remarkable job of curating their donations and the front desk folks are both friendly and helpful. Just a word of warning: Beware of brief visits to the store after you have cleaned up your house and dropped off new donations at the nearby outside pod! The staff is always helpful, and do a beautiful wrapping job if requested for gifts. You'll find tags with staff recs hidden around the store which is fun. The kids section is a bit limited, but the wall of books it's behind is creative and the selection that is there has great classics mixed in with some great newer publications.

I noticed a wonderful collection of art books, not just of the coffee-table variety, but really fantastic old painting/drawing/photography tomes. There's also a large collection of first editions, autographed books, and very old - i.e. 1800's - books too. You won't find cheap paperbacks or sci-fi or "Garfield" books here. They do have sales of cheaper books from a large tent outside, but you still won't find cheap paperbacks, sci-fi, or "Garfield" books there. The prices are not crazy, but they are not low, either. I suppose you pay for the quality and service of a local, small bookstore. It's nice just to browse. I understand they could order new books for you too, or search for old books too.

In many ways, you'll feel like you are in a museum dedicated to books, as his displays are so neat and well organized. No dusty ripped Book of the Month Club items in here. There's a warm and inviting vibe as you enter, and a terrific and varied assortment of books displayed nicely throughout. Additional merchandise includes flowers and other interesting gifts. (Miniature garden kits, for instance, when we were there.) And if you're lucky, you can meet the resident "grumpy" cat, Rudie. If you're up for the weekend, it's a great place to find an interesting read, along with some flowers, and certainly a must-visit on your next stop through Rosendale. He is very knowledgable of all things current in the comic world, knows people in the industry, has artist appearances to sign books and will happily talk to you about any comic related issue you may have. He will happily set up your pull list with discount prices for doing so. The very large inventory of current and near current books, both majors and independents, are neatly bagged and boarded on shelves. You can frequently find the last ten issues of any story available on the shelf for their cover price. While there are not boxes and boxes of back issues in the store, they will always happily track down any issue(s) you need to acquire. The store also has a good selection of "kids" comics for the young readers. Additionally, Alterniverse has a large supply of all the card games, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon: decks, boosters and singles. And what comic store would be complete without the action figures and "higher end" collectables that are nicely displayed. The store has moved across the street from its former home and is very spacious. I am actually surprised not to see more comments here, as the store is invariably full of people all the time. There is a constant schedule of MAgic and Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments going all week. Frankly, I love this store and only wish I lived closer to it. When you find a book he has some kid who has no idea what he's looking at look up prices. Not taking into consideration the condition of the comic. Tried to charge me 17 dollars for 4 defenders comics that were in horrible condition. They can be found in a dollar bin in better condition. You can't ask anyone for help because they have no idea where anything is. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time. They also seem to only care about the people buying their scalped Pokémon cards.
