Small but beautiful and a nearly magical selection of collector quality books mixed with used from a subculture of true intellect. I felt transported to Berkeley when in the Asian and occult sections, was actually a real shock! They've a truly impressive children's classics section too and anyone in need of spending some time browsing or seeking a travel book won't be disappointed. Yellow House is a wonderful local used bookstore with excellent prices. I love their slightly esoteric selection: I always find something I want whenever I come in. Their speciality seems to be old travel and adventure books and super-nostaligic children's books, including such hard-to-find authors as Richard Halliburton and Albert Payson Terhune - often in beautiful first editions. They also have a wide selection of poetry, cookbooks, and nature writing - right up my alley. Everything is very well priced, and I have picked up books in splendid condition for two bucks or less here. Even hardcovers can go for as little as seven. What a deal. The store is small but very cozy, and there is a cat to visit with when you're done perusing the literary selections. There's a 15 dollar minimum to use a debit or credit card, so either pick out more books (not hard) or bring some cash. Support indie bookstores! read more

This is a fairly small used book store, right on Main Street in Great Barrington. The front room is filled with art books, new acquisitions and local material. I have found many books in here, all in excellent condition. The second room is devoted to children's books. They have everything from paperbacks to Bobbsey Twins to rare first editions for the collector. I bought a lot of paperbacks to send to an African orphans program, and the selection was strong but the prices were high. (It was worth it, though. The kids hardly have any books and love getting anything at all.) The last room in back has fiction and nonfiction. They have a small selection related to book collecting in here. I have bought some reading material for myself, but do look closely. Some of the jackets have been price clipped and sometimes you'll see the owner's name inside. In general, the condition of these books is excellent. You can often find current best sellers for about half the listed price. They will buy your unwanted books for store credit or for cash, which is nice if you are feeling broke or bored with your current reading material. You will not find any overlooked or rare treasures in here and I find the prices to be quite steep compared to some nearby places, particularly Rodger's Book Barn in Hillsdale, NY which is about a half an hour away at most. read more

We're up in the Great Barrington area twice a year and always stop at the Yellow House Bookstore. The selection changes all the time, but the general organization is always the same, so you feel instantly as if you've come back to visit your family home. They have fiction, but this is more a place to find a philosophy or history or poetry or art book. The selections are well curated and well priced. I always find something I can't imagine living without, and it's always in a different category. Last week I picked up a book on cognitive neuroscience. Last year I found a classic book on color design. And, before that, it was a Greek cook book. Why not? Also, the people working there are helpful without being pushy. And, unlike some book stores, the front isn't cluttered with cute stationery tchotchkes and overpriced cards. read more

The weekend of my birthday I decided I wanted to do a family camping trip. My mother, not a camping fan, insisted we go shopping in town. I hate shopping, unless it's for books! I spotted this adorable little shop called Yellow House Books and just had to visit! The exterior of the building is so cute. They even have a porch. When you walk inside, it's not a big place and not much room to walk around. Unforunately, I visited on a busy day and had to wait to view most of the shelves. The books are organized, shelves are nicely labeled, and the staff are super helpful. I found a book called Tolkien Treasures, and being a huge Tolkien fan, I just couldn't pass up this opportunity. The prices were good and checkout was fast and easy. Definitely going to be visiting this hidden gem again! read more

For an antiquarian bookstore that's relatively small (3 rooms), Yellow House packs quite a wallop in terms of content and quality. The bookcases are laid out in a way to maximize space and yet allow easy passage. The content was also different enough from what you might see in larger antiquarian bookstores to keep it interesting. As I purchased my book, the owner mentioned how she had almost kept that book for herself. The friend with whom I was shopping also picked up a nearby book and mentioned it was the first novel he had read by that author, and the two of us said it was for us also. She said she enjoyed chatting with us, and it felt like she was sending us good vibes that her books were going to good homes. The best part of shopping and buying at an antiquarian bookstore is owners who appreciate their wares not just as a financial investment. read more

Yay, used book store! Very nicely maintained and pleasant for browsing. I was impressed with the selection of mid-twentieth-century-and-earlier series books - quite a few Tom Swift Jr, a number of original Tom Swifts, some Beverly Gray and a Vicki Barr (by which I was quite tempted, having been extremely and anachronistically fond of the author's other series, Cherry Ames, when I was a preteen in the late 1980s). However, I opted instead for a paperback copy of _Hitty_ in excellent condition. $15 minimum for credit cards, but there's a TD Bank across the street so fear not. read more

Great selection of art books in the front room, nice philosophy section, and a broader range than your standard literature section. Am a big supporter of local businesses and was very disappointed by my treatment by the store's owner. Have a friend who thinks highly of the place and has brought in several of my books to sell. So brought in some more books in excellent condition. Left them there and came back in a half hour. They were highly desirable children's books. Guess the owner didn't think so because he put them in the street by the curb. Took them somewhere else and they were readily accepted. Try the Book Loft in Kmart Plaza. Treated with courtesy and never had a problem with them. read more
