Don't gloss over this discrete sign on the window or you'll miss a cozy wine spot.

We happened to stumble upon this hidden gem of a wine bar while waiting for a table at neighboring Nudel. This is a quaint little bookshop that very fortunately for all of us began serving wine not too long ago. I can't think of a better way to pass the time while waiting for a table than chatting with the owner and his daughter. Both were extremely friendly and had a nice selection of reasonably priced wines by the glass. The atmosphere is very intimate and cozy and the company is very pleasant. The owner is very happy to chat with anyone at the bar which makes for very welcome stimulating conversation. I think our experience was a bit unique since we were able to sip and chat until about 8 or 9 (which was like burning the midnight oil when compared to their regular hours). I believe the summer hours are a bit later, so something to look forward to. 4 stars for great concept and people, however, limited hours.

Great independent bookstore. Always interesting books on display. Smart, friendly staff. A good store for browsing & finding your next favorite read.

Ombra -- Subtle. Seductive. Memorable…read more When you are a wine afficionada you seek out the best wine bars wherever you go. Welcome to Ombra in Lenox, MA. Lenox has some really cool spots and Ombra is one of them. Recommended by a local, we stopped here on Valentine's Day after our dinner for a nice glass of wine. The place was crowded but luckily a few people were leaving so we scored some seats at the bar. I ordered a glass of Nebbiolo from Italy which was good. My husband had a beer. The place is so cute and very romantic with dim lights, a great wine selection and their food looked so good. Unfortunately, we were so full that we did not end up ordering anything. Although, the french fries were calling my name. Ombra is a place that I could see us coming to almost every week and not getting tired of it. We met a local who is very nice and told us how Ombra is very popular. I think we will have to come back in the spring/summer to get those french fries :) If you are ever in Lenox definitely make your way to Ombra for a nice glass of wine or try a cocktail. This is the perfect date night spot for sure whether you start or end your evening here, you will be happy! Cheers~

A Valentine's dinner that did not impress!…read more Valentine's has always been a very special holiday for me. My husband and I decided to spend the weekend in the Berkshires, which was lovely and quiet. I made reservations ahead of time for this highly rated wine bar and very close to where we were staying. First off, due to the previous weather/storms they had no street parking. But luckily we parked in a nearby lot. Upon arrival, the restaurant bar area was very nice and romantic. The server brought us to our table but I was a bit disappointed in the ambiance. I mean the bar area was a bit darker and the table that we were being seated at had a lot of light. Now, don't get me wrong, It was Valentine's day which screams romantic and there was no romantic vibe to this restaurant. After mentioning this to our server she did move us and turned down the lights a bit which was much better. Food/Drinks: The menu was not big at all which was nice. I ordered a dirty martini to start which needed more olive juice and my husband ordered a rum cocktail which he enjoyed. For starters, I ordered their Over Roasted Parsnip which was very good and filling. My husband had their Beet Salad which he said was excellent. For entrees, I had their Seared Duck Breast. I really enjoyed the caramel sauce but did not love the duck itself. My husband had the Oven Roasted Chicken Statler which was very dry he could barley eat it. Also, since this is a wine bar I will say the wines were nothing special which was also a bit disappointing. I wish they had something unique and special to offer especially being on a Valentine's Day. I feel this place may be more of a summer destination. Service: Service was excellent I will say. Our server was always asking how things were, checking on us and if we needed anything and asking about any additional drinks. etc. Also, the Manager came over to ask how everything was but he spefically looked at me. I think my husband would've mentioned his meal being dry if he looked at him as well but my husband could've spoken up too. We did say something to our server after she asked about the chicken dish, which they ended up taken off the bill which was very nice. Overall: I didn't love Alta Wine Bar my first time here, but I would come back in the spring or summer months when the weather is warm to try it again. Cheers~

(I've been to Florence in the last 6 months...and I don't recall that the food is like this necessarily, but that's beside the point). The salads are interesting yet there remain classics like Caprese, and the pastas are varied and well executed. They even have some classics like rigatoni in a meat ragu (in case you bring your very old mother who misses her era of Italian food). We waited for some time for our food and weren't offered any bread. Which at first I thought was kind of different compared to other Italian restaurants or steakhouses which is fine BUT At the end of the meal, we saw the server proactively giving bread to all the tables around us. When I asked why we weren't offered any, he just said it was 'by request only.' Which is inaccurate coz I heard him say --here's some bread and olive oil to eat while you guys are waiting. We were well-dressed, smiling, polite, respectful and noticed we were the only Asians in the room. It honestly felt were singled out or ignored, especially seeing everyone else get better service. It was an unwelcoming experience. Even when we first came in we weren't accompanied to our table the guys just pointed --there that's your table. We didn't sit yet because the table was plated for 4 people and there's 5 of us. So when he noticed we're still standing he approached us and I said sorry I wasn't sure if this is for us because there's 5 of us and he said unapologetically "well you didn't call to reserve". Well even if we didn't reserve it doesn't mean we cannot get a little customer service.. like " I apologize for the inconvenience it's the only table available " or is there anything else I can offer to make it a little more comfortable for you and your family. Overall is a 3 over 5. Steak was good. The bread itself wasn't really a big deal it's just the being treated differently.

Even after trying many other restaurants in the area over the years, this has remained one of our most reliable favorites. Tonight, we were seated at a cozy booth in the back, which was much quieter and more relaxing away from the vibrant bar area in the front. We each ordered a cocktail. Hubby had the Berry Tootsie and enjoyed it very much, while I ordered the Lavender Lemon Drop. My cocktail was light, refreshing, citrusy, and very easy to enjoy. Both cocktails were generously poured and filled right to the brim. For our mains, I ordered the full-size Linguine Zuppa di Pesce, while hubby had the Chicken Parmigiana with a side of Brussels sprouts. My pasta was hearty, flavorful, and generously loaded with fresh seafood. Every bite felt comforting and satisfying without being overly heavy. The Chicken Parm was tender inside and topped with a flavorful tomato sauce and perfectly melted cheese. It was classic Italian comfort food done very well. Despite already having enough leftover pasta to take back to the resort, I still could not pass up the mango gelato for dessert. It was absolutely delicious -- light, refreshing, and perfectly balanced in sweetness, making for a wonderful ending to the meal. The hospitality was superb. Tiffin, our server, was wonderful throughout the evening. She was gracious, engaging, and attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcomed with her warm smile and thoughtful service from start to finish. The restaurant ambiance is a traditional nice dark wood and brass trim environment. We decided to order their grilled Halibut special over potato gnocchi. Very Delicious. As for their service, that was the weak point of the meal. Our server was not very friendly and customer driven. When we noticed other tables being taken care of more professionally, an example was when we asked for some EVOO for our bread and the server brings us an oil/vinegar rack used for salads. Other tables were given their special EVOO garlic upgrade. Overall the food was prepared perfectly by their kitchen culinary staff. Thank you. They do need to work with this one server because she was not their shining star.
