If you're looking for a spot to have a picnic, you have found the right place. Even though I spend most of time in Washington Park I do love walking to this gem especially when the leaves are changing colors. You will find some shaded grass areas, tennis courts, and a playground area if you have little ruggers. When you finish, walk around the neighborhood and be wowed by the neighborhood architecture. If you cross university you can also walk through the DU campus. read more

The park itself is spacious and well-kept, with big open lawns perfect for tossing a frisbee, reading under a tree, or setting up a picnic. There are tennis courts, a playground, shady paths, and just enough distance from traffic to feel peaceful. This is one of my favorite parks in the Denver metro area! I've been coming here since I was a child. It's home to the Chamberlain Observatory as well as tennis courts and plenty of green space. For a park that's tucked away in the middle of a residential area, it's surprisingly large. I would highly recommend coming here if you want to be outdoors without leaving the city! read more

Observatory Park is a quiet, peaceful, cheery park replete with trees, copious grass, a few paths, and like the name suggests, is home to a pair of observatories -- the full-size Chamberlin Observatory structure, and the "little brick outhouse"-sized Chamberlin Auxiliary Observatory, about 100 yds to the SSW of the main building. You can usually find parking around here pretty easily at most hours of the day, although Fillmore St (west side) is often filled with both vehicles from residents as well as park visitors. It's a great place if you want to do some star-gazing after hours to bring your own equipment, from binoculars to full telescopic setups. Otherwise during the day it's fairly small, unassuming and arguably underutilized, in one of the most peaceful, well-maintained and safe areas in Denver, University Park, just a half-dozen blocks east of DU proper. Nice place to catch some summer rays. :) Heading north across Warren towards Evans, the park is extended and contains many brushy pines, restroom facilities, and an extensive and artsy playground for any kiddos. [There is also an area called a "Star Loop" there which has facts about the sun and it's relationship to Earth (and presumably, other celestial bodies) embedded in sidewalk squares in that area. read more

Such a cool spot to check out in the spring and summer! On certain Friday nights you can go up and look out of an enormous telescope and go out on the balcony of the observatory. They have fun facts around the perimeter of the room and there's always something new to see/be learned. Their astrologists are very knowledgeable and friendly and mostly great at answering questions! On these same nights "amateur" astrologists bring out their own telescopes and set them up for the public as well! read more

The Chamberlain Observatory is located off of Evans in Observatory Park. It was part of the University of Denver but now sits on Denver Parks and Rec land. DU still runs programs at the observatory. Tuesday and Thursday nights are open to the public for viewing the Moon and Planets. On Saturday nights during first quarter moons there are a events for the public. Great place to go for eclipses and other unique celestial events because all of the local astronomy clubs descend on this place with all of their gear in place. For anyone with kids with minds ready to explore the possibilities of the universe this is a can't miss bonding experience. The big downside to this observatory is that it's in the middle of the city and the light pollution degrades the experience. My first time to O-Park was on a date. I thought that going to look at the stars would be a romantic end to the night. Sadly, the observatory was closed. We were too late for stars. Fast-forward a couple years. I Finally went back and actually got to look through the telescope. It was fantastic! The cosmologist who led the class and the viewing told us that the observatory was priceless. "If this were a violin, it would be a Stratovarius." Very cool! It's a great activity to share with science oriented friends and kids with curious minds. The park itself is a mellow sweet-spot in the big beast of a city we call Denver. I love the shade trees and a really like when the park fills with people and their telescopes on Denver Astronomical Society Star Party nights. This park has a playground, some open space, and some fine looking trees (my personal favorite). And oh yeah.. an observatory or something? This small park in the DU area is quiet and tucked away from just about everything. A remote part of the DU campus, this park surrounds the university's observatory. I don't know much about the building, but it was nice hanging out on the grass all evening. Even when the security guards roll by, they didn't kick us out. They just want to make sure nobody's in the observatory, I guess. Just mind the sprinklers after nine, okay? read more

Husband took me for Saturday date night. (We are old and nerdy). People show up with their own telescopes which you can have a look - and you get to go inside the observatory building and view the big telescope. How cool is it that the telescope is almost 90% original to the 1880's! Bad ass. We got to see specific craters on the moon really up-close and the scientist knew exactly which craters we were viewing. Then down on the lawn the star-gazing folk allowed us to view through their telescopes and I got my first ever view of Saturn. Rings and all! I can attest - It's really up there folks. Public Nights are a Denver tradition that began on the night of August 1, 1894. The Denver Astronomical Society has hosted Public Nights for over 50 years. All public nights start with an informative astronomy presentation by a DAS lecturer. Presentations are illustrated with colorful computer graphics shows, videos, and/or whatever audio/visual method is appropriate. Astronomy presentations are designed for visitors of all ages. Additionally, visitors will be treated to telescopic views of the moon, stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae, etc., through Chamberlin's historic 20-inch Alvan Clark-Saegmuller refracting telescope (weather permitting). I really like this park. The playground area is quite extensive. Two sand pits, two sets of playground equipment, swings, and even loaner toys. There is a toybox of donated toys for the sand, ride-on vehicles, etc. That takes the cake in my book. No fun to play in the sand without buckets, shovels, etc. read more

Love the observatory, and I would like the chance to go in ( i think it;s closed forever?). The park is beautiful to look at, but it's not the kind of park I would want to read a book in. There don't seem to be many trees and it would be lonely. It's the kinda park that would give way to a smokin' hot Frisbee game. It has a lot of open space. read more

Pretty Denver City Park, not too big, not real small. The Chamberlin Observatory is an excellent example of late 19th century astronomical and scientific facility. The building was designed by Colorado architect Robert Roeschlaub. read more
