This was an ok trip but I had mixed feelings about it…read more Pros: The guide was nice (we had Lane), which made the ride more enjoyable. He knew all of our names before we even left the parking lot. The trail was in good shape from recent rain so a beginner would have no trouble participating. Cons: The email confirmation and website mentioned the bike shortage and that riders had to be a minimum of 4 ft tall with a 24 inch inseam but didn't really explain how to measure that, etc. Sure, I know what an inseam in pants is, but turns out an inseam measurement for bike riding is different. Would have been nice to know without having to look it up the night before and then worry my kid wouldn't be tall enough. Lots of standing around. We were on the 10-4 tour and though we arrived at 9:45 no one directed us to have our kids take the bike test to see if they could go and nobody got fitted for bikes until everyone in the booking had arrived. Then, the large 10 am group was split into two smaller groups and if you were in the second group, you had to stand around for 20 minutes killing time to give the first group a head start. Why not just stagger the starts and have a 10 am and a 10:30? From a customer perspective this sort of sucked. This was billed as a Mountain bike ride with waterfalls and slides, but it was more like, walking/hiking to see 3 waterfalls and then a very mellow 3 mile single track ride to finish. It would have been nice to sort people by skill or interest (shorter vs longer rides) as we definitely had some gung ho dudes in our group and some newbies like me. Two of the waterfalls (at least) were accessible via McKay campground, which was a little disappointing. I thought we would be off the beaten path, checking out a little known spot, etc. Overall, our young kids, 8 and 10 enjoyed it and had fun. It was their first time mountain biking. I'd rate the ride and scenery 4 stars but the administration and organization only 2 stars (I'm a fan of efficiency and customer service) , hence my 3 star rating.

From there the group will vote and you must conform to the group decision. We were the only ones who showed up. The owner, Todd, decided after getting various voice messages the day before and the morning of, but he would cancel the event. Great! No pick up the phone and call your customers to make sure they don't waste their time and come all the way out to the top of a mountain only to find your experience was canceled. He claimed to have sent a text in the early morning hours. But I didn't get it until after the fact. Oh well, not great but not terrible. Did waste a lot of our time driving out there on a horrific weather day for smoke. Talked to Todd personally later, and he said "no problem I'll give your money back." Refund it all of it except our deposit, then wouldn't answer the phone or return multiple calls. In my final message I reminded him of his neglect as a business owner and a conscientious honest human. Told him repeatedly he needed to refund my deposit, as there were no terms or discussion of anything other than a full refund. Really annoying to deal with business owners who aren't conscientious. Really detracts from your credibility. So here's the review I promise to leave you if you went another two weeks without returning my calls again. Gave you four chances Todd.

Woo-hoo! What a hoot! Spent a weekend in Bend with friends, g/f suggested that we take a ride…read morewith Outriders. Although a bit cautious, it sounded like fun and we signed up. Interestingly, our friends had tried to sign up the next morning but were told that "they'd see what they could do" because apparently Outriders only runs a limited number of 4x4's per trip. But, we found out later that day that they'd added one vehicle to the run and we were all good to go. Launch point was about a 15 minute drive from our friends in S. Bend. Just a turnoff on a forest trail off of the road, we spotted our guide and vehicles and got situated. Helmets were fitted, and we were given a clean set of instructions from Jason, our guide. And off we went. We'd signed up for the two-hour run and honestly, about 15 minutes in, I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it. It was a bit of a ride, even given the soft suspension of the 4x4's. However, it's hard to deny the beauty of the surroundings and the smiles on our faces. We got up to the top of a bluff whose same I don't recall - Sugar Bluff, maybe? - and stopped for a bit. Jason gave us a status check and a bit of history and geography info. He's very informative, and easy to talk to, very willing to answer questions. From there we headed through the forest to our next stop, some lava fields. Again, a bit of history, very informational about the age of the rocks, and some interesting facts about plant growth in relating to the lava rocks age. All in all, this was a heck of a ride. Up and down, bouncing all around, noisy, only a bit of dust (we were lucky that day so be forewarned if you do this during a dry spell). There are other options available, we're seriously considering one of them for our next trip to Bend. Don't forget to tip your guide!

Definitely one of the best highlights of our trip to Bend, Oregon over the weekend…read more Shay (maybe spelled Che) was A fantastic tour guide! Very knowledgeable, whimsical, lighthearted, and free spirited. The perfect person to lead an adventure into the Oregon wilderness. Our trip started with a short van ride from the Fred Meyer parking lot. She shared lots of knowledge about various trees in the area, wildlife, things the local government was doing to help clean up some of the territory we're gonna be going to explore the cave. She seemed like somebody who genuinely enjoys her job, likes to explore, and is just a genuine, good person all around. Going into the cave was surreal, almost like stepping into a different climate. It definitely felt like it was 45° all year round down there. Once we lost the natural lighting too it became very spooky, but everybody had headlamps so it was pretty easy to see where we were going. My wife and I saw a few baby brown bats hanging out on the walls while we were there. They were so tiny and cute! I'm glad they're able to survive down there. I really like that her tour guy gave us a choice between one of two directions into the cave. I have really bad knees, and thankfully, our tour guide, and our group was able to respect that. We had a very good lighthearted adventure down in the dark. My favorite part was when we all got to turn off our headlamps for a little bit, and stay silent, and just enjoy utter blackness. Deathly felt like a good way to de-stress a little. Shay was a fantastic tour guide and we are definitely going to be using this to our group again in the near future. Thanks for the memories!

I would bring my own next time) The bonfire was amazing and the goodies were tasty. Nature did her part with a sparkling clear night, brilliant moon and meteor. I will definitely do another tour with Wanderlust!

August 26-29, 2025 - La Pine, OR…read more We've stayed at La Pine Campground a few times over the years, and each visit reminds us why we keep coming back. The campground is divided into three loops, each with its own character. The North Loop offers water and electric hookups, with sites that are more widely spaced than the others--something I really appreciate. That extra room makes it feel quieter and more private, and it's probably where we'll book our next stay. The Middle Loop has full hookups, while the South Loop is the busiest, featuring full hookups as well as some cabins. . There are many hiking/cycling trails (dog-friendly), and the Deschutes River runs through the campground. There is a short hike to a waterfall, and a large dog park. Unfortunately, we were a bit restricted in our outdoor activities because of the smoke from the two fires in the area. There was actually ash falling on one of the days. Also, there had been several sightings of a mountain lion in the area, so that added a bit of caution to our activities. Nevertheless, we will definitely come back.

Some sites are fairly tight, while others had some nice room. The trails here were very enjoyable. Serene surroundings around the river and through the trees. What a beautiful national park!…read more Came here on a day where the weather changed between partly cloudy/sunny and snowy/rainy. The snowy surroundings created a nice contrast against the very deep blue color of the lake. In the early morning, it was very peaceful. There were not many people around, likely because of weather. The Steel Visitor Center's film was excellent to get a sense of the geology and history of the park. The lodge also offered an excellent meal with a partial view of the lake. Because of the snow, we were not able to go on the Rim Drive or hike the trails. I would imagine all the views would have been beautiful. The Cleetwood Cove trail down to the lake is closed for 3 summers, through 2028. If weather is of any question, the NPS website has up-to-date information about the weather, including webcams of several spots in the park.

Surprisingly not busy for memorial day weekend although we started early on a sunday morning and a lot of the park was still closed for the season, there was snow! My 3 year old was very pleased. We purchased the annual national park pass at the front gate, sad to hear that the national park staff keeps being reduced and scary to know that there's only *one* emergency ranger on staff currently so please follow the rules folks! Lot's of cute shops for goodies and campgrounds along the way. We stayed an hour away but the drive felt fast and scenic. A nice breath of fresh air. The large parking lot seemed to fill up fast to see the lake, but super close so very accessible. A few hikes were open but honestly just sitting and admiring the lake does the trick. Would love to come back and visit when more of the park is open!

Once at the bottom, you check in again and wait for your shuttle to take off. Staff are neutral and not overly friendly. There are restrooms, but they were not the cleanest. It appears the old stone doc took some damage and there are construction fences throughout the area where you wait to board. To get on the boat you show your ticket number and pick any seat you would like. I recommend sitting closest to the captain so that you can get out first. They go over a brief safety announcement before taking off. The boat ride was smooth due to minimal wind and we even went past the "old man of the lake"- a log that floats completely upright and has for ~450 years. Once on Wizard island you were given three hours to explore. There are two hikes- Fumarole bay and the Summit. The Summit is the most popular of the two. I completed both and even enjoyed a little swim in fumarole bay. We were unfortunately called back in early to evacuate the island due to poor air quality from smoke. They explained that they would blow a horn three times in a row for us to hear and that we would need to rush back to the boat... and if we didn't make it in time that they would have to send out a rescue boat later which would be costly. We were in Fumarole Bay at the time the horn was blown and could barely hear it. By the time everyone was back at the boat we were only leaving the island 15 minutes earlier than we were set to originally. It felt like an unnecessarily stressful way to end the day, to just leave 15 minutes earlier. I understand there are protocols they have to follow- but perhaps make something so that people can more easily hear on the farther parts of the island. The ride back was uneventful. On return to Cleetwood cove there were many people at the bottom fishing, sunbathing, and swimming. The hike back out took about 30 minutes and there are plenty of spots to rest along the way.

The boat trip itself is great - fast and smooth, over the bluest water you will ever see. Hiking to Fumarole Bay involves many loose volcanic rocks - they are sharp, be careful. Views are amazing and unique. And the hike back up - bring plenty of water, it is definitely a slog but with a view that gets better and better.
