As others have stated - the Ocean Grove Lounge is a "Dive Bar." Or at the very least - it aspires to "Dive-Bar-esqueness!" I came in one evening while visiting the area on vacation. I sat at the bar and observed several locals chatting and having fun. The barkeep came over - and I asked about their Bloody Marys. The barkeep advised me she makes the Bloody Mary mix from scratch - but she couldn't tell you exactly how she makes it - as it is allegedly a little different each time. Okay, I'm down with that. The Ocean Grove... this hole in the wall bar/lounge/restaurant is about as Humboldt as it gets, with a unique and eclectic mix of people depending on the time and day of the week you are there. Don't let the outside fool you - pull in, you may be glad you did. Sitting under and within a beautiful grove of old growth redwoods, this cool old bar has been on the scene here for decades. A locals, regulars hang out in the evenings, and often empty during the days except at lunch, my first stop in here was over twenty years ago for a weekend, the food was good then and its still good today. We were recently at the ocean grove for a local festival this past weekend, and they were the hosts for the event. The place was packed with people, overrun at the restaurant, three deep standing room only at the bar, lines at the bathroom(s) and folks everywhere in between; inside on the dance floor, outside under the tall trees, everywhere - the staff and management handled everything as about as flawlessly as could be expected. Our food was again good, and for the sheer volume of people in the place, I have to give the cook credit - he rolled it, we (the wife and I) were between a party of seven and a party of nine, and we still got our food in about 25 minutes. The cheeseburger and chicken strips were both cooked properly and prepared well and the fries were hot and crisp, not soggy - and for diner/ greasy spoon food it was good. There was a line with multi-person orders pretty much the entire time we were there as well and it always rolled over and flowed the entire night, a good job by the cooking staff. The small bar was slammed. Even so, it rolled over pretty quickly with only one to two bar tender(s) at a time. We waited maybe 15 minutes to work our way up to the front, and people were ordering and moving out at a steady pace, again not bad for the sheer volume of people in the place. The beer was cold, they have a nice selection of bottles, cans and on tap. A full bar, you can order pretty much anything you want as well. Our bar tender, though not overly friendly did help us as quickly and efficiently as possible and moved on to the next person. This is a cool old funky Humboldt fixture in Trinidad under the tall trees. My friend and I spent a week surfing up and down this wonderful coast. To catch our breath and eat some lunch we parked behind this bar without knowing it was private property. The owners walked outside and politely invited us in for a drink. Everyone was super nice! We left as fast as we came to catch the surf, but the people were so welcoming that the memory has stuck with us. Thank you to Marco and company for welcoming us into your bar. I'm sorry, but this place is a dive bar dream! It's not much to look at, especially the restaurant side, but the place completely fit the ticket when my husband and I took a road trip from the East Bay to Trinidad for Thanksgiving weekend. We ordered fish n chips and a burger from the gal working in the restaurant and were allowed to go to the bar, order drinks and bring em' on over. The food was honestly good! It didn't blow our faces off or anything but it was tasty and the woman who helped us was charming. Now...for the bar side. It's dimly lit, has a pool table and other games, a jukebox and a VERY large selection of booze. That being said, the best part of the bar, as far as my husband and I were concerned, was Monica. She was the awesomeness working behind the bar that evening. We were just going to have one drink and be on our way, especially after a very obnoxious and loud group started to take over, but she was so great to chat with that we ended up staying for several. You have to be a fan of dive bars to truly appreciate Ocean Grove Lounge. It is a total "locals" bar, but that shouldn't scare you if you are not local to the area. My boyfriend and I stopped in for a drink on our way to dinner, and I'm glad we did. Our bartender was friendly, kind, and open to chit-chatting with us-- very welcoming to us strangers. The clientele was, um, let's say... entertaining (bonus!). And the jukebox seemed to be the only form of music (aka you get to be the DJ)! I particularly enjoyed the fact that people were playing a mix of old school country and the grateful dead. If you are looking for a pina colada with a paper umbrella and plan on drinking it with your pinky finger sticking out, maybe skip this place. Portland Gyal loving the dancehall scene in the middle of this forest. Awesome Monday night jam. Great patio. Loud ass music. Good tunes. Everyone was so nice. Didn't try any food. Just went to turn up. Lots of fun. Stayed at the hotel that shares the same property- interesting evening to say the least. Its a lil shanty shack-like but fun for partying!! We slept on top of the covers because it was a tad too dingy for us, but if you don't mind the grime, its a lot of fun. read more

After being put off by the Larrupin Cafe just up the road, we settled in for some fish and chips that had us craving them again long after we left. We were greeted by a nice older lady working the kitchen that made us feel right at home. After ordering, we headed to the bar, where we were welcomed by a nice young lady serving up our new favorite beer, Angry Orchard with a shot of Cinge Tequilla for an apple pie taste. The conversation was comfortable. The music was fun. Watching the people dancing was the perfect ending to our day at Agate Beach. This has become "Our Spot" to visit when we return! read more

Awesome dive bar! Monica the bartender makes a bomb Whiskey Sour and doubles as a stand up comedian, whether she means to or not. My wife and her became friends instantly. Tv for sports, pool table, digital juke box and huge back deck. The burger was delicious served with homemade onion rings. Loved the local laid back atmosphere, we'll be back. read more

I love the OG. It's the only bar around and everyone is friendly. Its a dive bar, for sure, but that's my kind of place. Apparently they sell Mexican food too, but there is no way I would EVER eat it. But nonetheless, it is one of my favorite places to spend a night out with friends. I was really hoping to run into Thomas Pynchon here, as legend has it he may still live in Trinidad, but no luck. I am hardly ever moved to write one star reviews about anything. But wow. I stopped by here while camping in the area. I arrived here a little before they closed (maybe that was the problem???) Initially it looked like a decent diner and dive bar- I like both of those things. I ordered the veggie burger and a soda and sat down in one of the booths. The woman at the counter (who looked super stressed) screamed out customers' names throughout the entire venue in a shrill, angry voice over and over and over again. When my burger arrived, it was thoroughly soaked in grease and had weird hard pieces inside of it. The entire vibe felt like I'd walked in a party with Jesse Pinkman and his pals. If that's your thing, great. It definitely wasn't mine. read more

we didn't know what to expect walking in. there were a couple patrons in the bar, the restaurant was empty. but we sat down and ordered anyway. i had a chicken sandwich and it was very good. tasty, seasoned nicely. hubby had shrimp and fries. his shrimp was excellent. debbie was awesome - she kept my soda glass filled. it's wonderful eating somewhere where the food is good the staff is friendly and makes you feel at home. great place to eat. read more

The bar looks like your typical dive bar. Dark and has a pool table. I was pretty happy with the outdoor seating. It has much more space than I had pictured it having. The bartender was nice and kept checking to make sure we had a drink and ask if we needed anything else. The one thing we did need she couldn't do anything about. Apparently a local "dj" takes it upon himself to show up there sometimes and it seems his only goal is to find the absolute worst techno/house music with no beat and to see how loud he can play it. Driving out the only 3 patrons was this guys mission. I tried to block it out and it kept getting worse and louder. We asked the bartender if she could help and she said she had been trying. So my friend went up to request a song or maybe give this guy some direction, he pretended to ignore her, turned his back to her and turned it up louder. We were offered the excuse that he was only 24 years old. Yes but he has no taste in music. In fact, he seemed to excell in finding horrendous atrocities against it. I am generally open minded about music as long as it's not country. I can find merit in death metal screaming or even Frank Zappa but this was a crime and insult to even call it music. Being young is not an excuse for not having taste nor manners. If the guy just had crappy taste musically that would be one thing but to top it off with a bad attitude and no respect for anyone else makes him a poor choice to be in charge of entertainment or atmosphere anywhere. I like to see silver lining in everyone's clouds and thought of a way to make this work for him. Turn it into a gong show! Then he could invite musically challenged friends to join him and it could be fun picking out which one of them sucks the worst and be the perfect platform to showcase his lack of taste. It wouldn't help with his lack of manners but at least it would offer decent entertainment to the people who have to sit through it. read more

I had to open my car door and throw up before I had even driven out of their parking lot after eating the Mexican food......and there were some very bad vibes in that place on the restaurant side. I later told some friends that we had eaten there and they were upset and told us that "everyone" knows not to eat the food there. Try the Lighthouse in Trinidad for some good and simple food. read more
