Sat at the bar recently one evening and had a cold beer, hot green tea and asian cold noodle salad and never left my seat. My bartender was funny, kind and gracious and made me feel welcome and appreciated RGT&TR is an eclectic mix of folks from 21 and up, a large portion of the room is also over 40. The room is a smaller space with a mixture booths and chairs, a singular bar with about 6 to 8 or so stools, along with a few tables and chairs and also an outdoor seating area. The noodles were really good bar food, and my draft a decent pour. (Warning to straight white men) This place presents itself as inclusive, but I've personally heard complaints from two other straight white men who felt stigmatized here. What I experienced was the most humiliating nightlife situation I've ever dealt with, and it's something I'm still affected by when I go out in this small community. I had been going to The Goat on and off for about a year prior with no issues. No other establishment has ever had a problem with me. I'm sober and respectful. One night I was talking to a woman when a very drunk guy came up to me and asked, "Are you spiking drinks tonight?" I honestly thought he was joking and said, "No... what the hell?" To this day I do not know whether this guy was jealous because he wanted to talk to her, or if he genuinely believed something had happened to someone he knows. Either way, he had the wrong guy. He came back even more intoxicated and wanted to fight me. He was with a large friend group and was clearly the most drunk among them. I went to the bartender (Toss) and told him a guy was making serious accusations I did something I didn't do and was trying to fight me, and asked for help. What I didn't expect was a guilty-until-proven-innocent response. I wasn't asked questions or given any chance to explain. I was told there had been "several reports" that night and I was asked to leave, even though the other guy was the one threatening violence. I followed up with ownership/management over the phone the next couple of days. They told me there was no evidence of anything, that I wasn't banned, and to ignore the people involved and just enjoy my nights as long as I wasn't creating issues. I did exactly that. However, The Goat is a very clicky LGBTQ community, and after that night I was clearly socially targeted. Toss would follow me around whenever I showed up. On Sunday, the only unusual thing I did was leave the crowded karaoke room early and later take a nap in my car because I was exhausted from working earlier that day. I didn't even feel safe driving at that point. Then on Tuesday, I showed up and was told I could not come back due to another "cluster of complaints," including something about me being on my phone, which made no sense. I asked them to check the cameras because I didn't do anything wrong. Later that same Tuesday night, I saw Toss at Everett's, intoxicated, telling the owner I should be 86'd, citing these vague "incidents." I was just playing pool. I have no way to defend myself against false claims like this. No one ever complained about me before that first incident. I've spent years in Chico's bar scene with a solid reputation. False accusations are incredibly damaging. I would never spike drinks and wouldn't even know how. I don't think they realize this is bullying and harmful. I did nothing wrong, yet standing up for myself has gotten me nowhere. read more

This place used to be pretty fun to go to for karaoke night but it seems to have lost its luster. Most people go to the bars at 10-11 but if u show up don't think about getting a shot at singing. It's usually a 3 hour wait, which is weird cause the parking lot isn't even full. You can see certain people singing 3-5 times and so most people that visit for the first time and wanna sing just never get the chance. I get off work late and can't show up super early like some of these folks. guess I'll just find a new karaoke spot with a not so huge wait time. Cause I can't wait till 1 to sing one song. So basically ever since this bar became the designated LGBT bar this is the only place me and my friends will go. Every time we go it's a super fun vibe that you don't really get anywhere else in Arcata. I have not been to a establishment that is a better place to meet singles. I really like this bar, went two nights in a row while I was in Arcata. The bar itself is cool, and has a venue where the show movies and live music attached to it as well. I like the decor, it's strange and pretty. The cocktails are delicious and I love the names. I got the "from dusk til dawn" because I love that movie and tequila. They even have a mocktails menu, which was cool because my bf doesn't drink and we ordered. Few off that, also delicious. Their snacks are good too! We had the curry tots. Suitably amazing cocktails, served with a smile and a slight hipster wink. Seriously though, I'm writing this sitting at one of Richard's Goat Tavern & Tea Room's booths after enjoying a Moscow Goat and a There Will Be Bloody Mary, and sampling my wife's Marsh Fog and Gentlemen Prefer Bourbon. Of all those cocktails the Bloody Mary was the least awe inspiring (it needs horseradish, or salt, or a little more Worcestershire sauce, or black pepper...or something). The Marsh Fog with its earl grey infused vodka was just perfect. The Moscow Goat was my absolute favorite, and it was without the ginger-tangerine infused vodka and it was STILL great (they still used regular vodka). There's a good amount of seating, but it can get loud in here. Local wine, beer, and kombucha (c'mon, it's Arcata) is also available. At the time of this review, they had macaroni and cheese and some sort of vegetarian option for food. You can't go wrong for upscale cocktails if you come to Richard's Goat. Cool bar in arcata. As I was preparing for my trip I found this place on Yelp so I bookmarked it. Loved the decor and set up. It looked like a hipster type lounge serving both craft drinks and teas. Strange combo but it works. It was a diverse crowd with some people like myself unwinding after work, some students studying, some groups of people gathering for a casual meeting and just people coming in for a good time. The bartender was very friendly and drinks were solid. Although I wanted to try one of the special craft drinks on the menu I stuck to my usual, titos and soda ($6) which was very reasonable. There was a calendar on the wall with the different nightly events. Tuesday they have a taco truck and Wednesday (the night I was there) they had a live band. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay to watch. Hopefully next time. They also have a nice selection of games to play (i.e. Cards against humanity, connect 4, and some others). read more

It is not trying to be anything..... and, therefore, it is so welcoming. It's a great place to hang out and have tea, a cocktail, enjoy Taco Tuesday, see a movie (bound to be good!) or just relax with a box of popcorn. Why is it so cool? It's spacious, the surfaces are "real"---- as in real cloth, real wood. (We care about that sort of thing in Arcata.) And, honestly, I have never had a problem with the "service." The Goat (as it's known) offers a more boho-artsy vibe than the other bars along the plaza, complete with a mini movie theatre (the Miniplex)! Cool interior, open space, a little out of the way by comparison, this is worth checking out. The beer list is pretty good, and they do a great job with drink specials and interesting concoctions. Richards' Goat is the best place for craft cocktails in Arcata and Eureka. I came with my wife as part of weekend getaway trip from SF. I was searching on Yelp for the best bars and at first I was a little concerned since this place didn't have many reviews. So glad I came! The cocktails were great. My favorite was the March Fog (earl grey infused vodka, champaign, orange bitters, sugar cube a twist on the classic champaign cocktail) then I also loved their old fashioned. Simple but good. They have lots of tea infused cocktails, local beers on tap, and a great atmosphere. The infused glass chandelier is really cool, as is the story of why they named it Richards Goat. You will have to check it out yourself! Lastly I should mention we didn't order food other than a PI day dessert special - whiskey butter pie with rose gelato. Wow was this ever good. Probably the best dessert pie I've eaten in a year. The prices were really reasonable. 7 drinks and dessert came to under $50, half of what you would pay in SF! They also had a DJ come in on this Saturday night. Normally I'm not a fan of DJs as the music often gets turned up too loud but this DJ was perfect. It was loud enough that made it a party but not too loud that you couldn't have a conversation. Music was great too. I came in around 6:45 and place was quiet. The lady's were nice but not all "HEY WELCOME TO RICHARDS GOAT!" One thing I was sooooooo happy to see was that they had cider! The cherry cider is incredibly delicious. As it got later, the place became comfortably crowded. They have some pretty fun board games and ahhhhhmazing music. I was really excited to come here because of the offerings for indie movies. Knowing Humboldt is out of the way and isolated I thought I wouldn't get a chance to see some of the films I enjoy and saw easily in San Diego. I was STOKED they were showing Landline (you should see it! Jenny Slate is a babe!) It was a little disappointing that the place was so empty. In fact it was completely empty when we get there to see the film. It was Saturday but early I guess. We had some excellent cocktails. Mine was a Mule which was awesome. I wish I'd had a second. The film room was small and the seats were a little uncomfortable. But the tables in the back were nicer. I would try this place again. Hopefully with a bigger crowd or maybe I'll convince a group to go. read more

Perfect for anyone who likes to leisurely enjoy a creative cocktail, unique local beer (macadamia nut was on tap here once!!), and conversation, the quirky knowledgable staff are quick to offer a smile and unobtrusive service. Relaxed ambiance with a nice lounge feel. The employees are nice too! There's always good local beer on rotation and good tea choices. Don't expect to come for food because that's not their specialty. If you are really lucky though they'll have a few chicken or veggie hand pies left (pot pie finger food). The place can get a tad noisy at peak hours but what do you expect from a nice tavern and tea room? Highly recommended, just don't eat that last hand pie...I called it!
