    Parking spot for me!
    Tami C.

#32/2020 Wow! It's been yearzzzzzzzzzz-zuh since I've been to any Military commissary and growing up as a military brat and later becoming a military spouse/widow, it used to be my first choice (and sometimes only) for grocery shopping! But having a Neighborhood Walmart built next to my neighborhood has taken me away from trips to the commissary over time, sadly. My favorite memory of the commissary are the baggers who bagged our groceries AND brought them out to our cars. Some of them were nice, some of them didn't know how to hold conversations, but no matter what you had to tip them! We, of course, had our favorites. Rule #1 about the commissary is: DO NOT GO ON THE 1st & 15th OF EVERY MONTH! Don't say I didn't warn ya, LOL! You can't purchase anything unless you have a valid Military ID. You can definitely enter with a Sponsor (aka friend or family member) but there's a sign at the ID check-in counter that reads "Guests Must Remain With Sponsor At All Times." (Insert side-eye emoji) I've noticed that available items vary from store to store depending on city, state, and probably country. I really appreciate the ones in the 757 area because they are mindful and cater to Asian families. I've seen many Asian grocery/produce items that make it convenient for us to prepare and cook native dishes without having to make extra stops elsewhere. If you need a specific type of meat, the butcher will gladly make an order for you! Lastly, the best part of the Commissary is the lower price points! I've missed them and it's totally worth the drive especially if you're making a huge grocery trip. If you're only needing one or two items, not worth the drive for me, I'd rather go next door to Walmart. But ever since my most recent visit the other day, I'm going back to my old habits and shopping my local Military Commissary.

This kind of looked good to me but had way too much sugar like 22g? I think. So I opted against it.

I like this particular commissary even though it's way out of the way for me because it has a lot of variety than the one closest to me. The prices are fairly good and well for obvious reasons there are no taxes. They have a good selection of deli meats, and have lots of gluten free option products. They also carry "so delicious " Ice cream for a good price $4.09? However they stopped selling the "so delicious" whip cream there for some reason. I tend to notice that with some of their really popular items they will all of a sudden stop selling them. They have great meat prices as well for the most part. However, some things are better purchased elsewhere like Dawn dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, paper towels, blueberries, strawberries and bananas I buy from Sam's Club.

    Always packed parking lot...

I was thrilled to see the TJ's sample station offering their graham cracker squares topped with their whipped carrot cake cream cheese! Uh, yes, please! I mean, who doesn't like a sample? Needless to say, I picked up a container of the whipped carrot cake cream cheese. Then, after moving away to continue shopping, I decided to turn right back around to grab another container! The nice young lady serving the samples smiled at me and told me she completely understood why I grabbed another container. Lol TJ's is always so clean and the staff is always so friendly at this location. I like finding new items every visit, and I picked up lots of sweet treats for the holiday. Big thanks to all the IG followers who post their Trader Joe's finds and their reviews of their favorites. My cashier, Melissa commented on the additional (3) reusable regional shopping bags I had in my cart. Hilltop had the bag for North Carolina! Yay! But I've got to say it may be worth the additional distance after a few visits the past month. Let's go through some highlights as related to compare with other area Kroger's, first they are a Marketplace which means they carry more than groceries. They have a good home goods selection. Something I found unique was the amount of Carhartt merchandise. I mean a lot! They also have the third largest wine and beer selection in Virginia Beach, it's massive! They offera larger inventory in every department and seem to have items I cannot find on Republic, or Shore stores. I had an interaction with the manager regarding a specialty beer they have had in the past, but did not have. She was helpful and apologized. Overall the store is impressive. Although my update remains neutral, it been seven years. The grocery ishuge, it's organized and clean. I will likely work the Holland Kroger store in my rotation.

Plenty of parking and the parking lot is well lit at night. It is typically well kept and inside the store is clean. Bathrooms available and a Starbucks inside. The one thing that annoys me about this location is that at night they solely rely on self checkout and will only have one employee there and everything moves so slow. The line gets so backed up, it's painful so I always try to avoid coming here after 8pm. It is also hit or miss with the staff's helpfulness/friendliness. Definitely way better to shop here first thing in the morning but that's typical with most grocery stores.

The new location has only half of what I bought at Jefferson Avenue in Newport News (not the other store on Warwick blvd.) E-Mart was relocated virtually overnight and without warning to Virginia Beach from Newport News. Did an army of marauders lug everything south or was it quantum tunneling and computer modeling that displace matter within space...? World Market in Newport News is the new E-Mart and has only furniture, not the Asian food I was looking for. Instead, I went next door to Fresh Market and bought two bags of red, white and blue potato chips. The woman of color behind the counter knew I understood what they had done. She said something out of context with my shopping trip: "It's my turn now." As if reparations are my duty to the world and I have to hand over the American legacy on a silver platter to make things right. Oh, so that's why you keep moving things around. Okay! Don't look at me if you want 40 acres and a mule because thanks to the local radical left politicians and reverse discrimination I have neither. This is a shell game. Someone is practicing psyops.

The initial pickup didn't match what was advertised: kids' tray wasn't as advertised with the smiley face presentation making it part of the kid-friendly menu and the chicken was *barely* lukewarm and packed in a thin, flimsy cardboard box (which had no chance of holding in any kind of warmth) instead of the foil catering pans shown online. With the party starting in 45 minutes, it was a stressful moment because my whole setup was planned around keeping the food warm with a buffet warmer. What turned this into a 5-star experience was the stellar customer service. When I called, the Assistant Grocery Manager, Gregory S., was calm, kind, and immediately took ownership of the situation. Rather than just offering a refund, he asked for the chance to fix it so I wouldn't have to scramble for last-minute food for the party. Within minutes he called back to confirm they could remake the order and he would personally deliver it on time. He arrived with everything *exactly* as advertised. The chicken was hot and in proper foil catering pans, so it could be put on my warmer, and the kids' tray was arranged with a fun smiley face that the children loved, and wanted to eat. He was professional, apologetic, and genuinely focused on making sure my daughter's party went smoothly. Mistakes can happen anywhere, but the way this manager and his store handled it was exceptional and went well above and beyond. They completely turned a stressful situation into a positive one, and because of that level of care and follow-through, I would absolutely recommend them for catering. If you have specific setup needs, it may be helpful to call ahead to confirm packaging but based on this experience I have a lot of confidence in how they take care of their customers. Thank you to Gregory and to Publix!
