This is one of my favorite commissaries in the VA Beach area. Everything is always well stocked and the prices are excellent. The parking is very easy, and you don't need to go through the gate guard unlike many commissaries in the DC area. This is actually great because you won't have to wait in a really long line to pass through the gate during busy morning hours or get stuck on base because of sudden gate closures. The IDs are checked immediately upon entering the building to verify patron eligibility instead. Every person who works there are very friendly and helpful. Some of the speciality ethnic pantry aisles are really worth peeking through. I've found really good brands of imported Italian San Marzano tomatoes, tomato paste, cans of anchovies perfect for making Caesar salad, Russian caviars, German marzipans, and all kinds of otherwise expensive imported items for less than $7. I thought that was a steal because for someone like me who cooks just about everything from scratch, you get really attuned to the raw ingredients prices and its quality. Both go hand in hand and this commissary location has a REALLY good selection of it. So if you are especially a big fan of pasta anything and really like the kind you can eat in Italy, it might be worth checking this commissary out. And even if you aren't so particular about cooking ingredients, you might still love going there either way due to the vast selections of ready made food, frozen items, and snacks. My husband had a field day getting all his junk food goodies and I had to practically drag him out of the snack aisle. The only thing I wish this location would improve upon is the inadequate lighting in the parking lot and pot holes leading in and out of it. The car lot can be extremely dark at night because of lack of lights and I actually wasn't sure if the place was open at night until I verified by calling. All employees are friendly and helpful. The store has a good selection. The only thing I feel it lacks is that there is not a fresh seafood counter. It's been yearzzzzzzzzzz-zuh since I've been to any Military commissary and growing up as a military brat and later becoming a military spouse/widow, it used to be my first choice (and sometimes only) for grocery shopping! But having a Neighborhood Walmart built next to my neighborhood has taken me away from trips to the commissary over time, sadly. My favorite memory of the commissary are the baggers who bagged our groceries AND brought them out to our cars. Some of them were nice, some of them didn't know how to hold conversations, but no matter what you had to tip them! We, of course, had our favorites. Rule #1 about the commissary is: DO NOT GO ON THE 1st & 15th OF EVERY MONTH! Don't say I didn't warn ya, LOL! You can't purchase anything unless you have a valid Military ID. You can definitely enter with a Sponsor (aka friend or family member) but there's a sign at the ID check-in counter that reads "Guests Must Remain With Sponsor At All Times." (Insert side-eye emoji) I've noticed that available items vary from store to store depending on city, state, and probably country. I really appreciate the ones in the 757 area because they are mindful and cater to Asian families. I've seen many Asian grocery/produce items that make it convenient for us to prepare and cook native dishes without having to make extra stops elsewhere. If you need a specific type of meat, the butcher will gladly make an order for you! Lastly, the best part of the Commissary is the lower price points! I've missed them and it's totally worth the drive especially if you're making a huge grocery trip. If you're only needing one or two items, not worth the drive for me, I'd rather go next door to Walmart. But ever since my most recent visit the other day, I'm going back to my old habits and shopping my local Military Commissary. read more

I like this particular commissary even though it's way out of the way for me because it has a lot of variety than the one closest to me. The prices are fairly good and well for obvious reasons there are no taxes. They have a good selection of deli meats, and have lots of gluten free option products. They also carry "so delicious " Ice cream for a good price $4.09? However they stopped selling the "so delicious" whip cream there for some reason. I tend to notice that with some of their really popular items they will all of a sudden stop selling them. They have great meat prices as well for the most part. However, some things are better purchased elsewhere like Dawn dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, paper towels, blueberries, strawberries and bananas I buy from Sam's Club. read more

This review is for the bakery only, as the store itself has always been fine. My husband went in to order 2 birthday cakes a few days ago: one cake for a 24 hour turnaround and one for a 4-day turnaround. Upon ordering the cakes he asked for whipped frosting because the premade buttercream is too sweet. Our family won't eat it. The woman taking the order told him the whip won't hold color or piping, which is a lie. I went to pastry school, and whip may have a lighter color but it holds color and piping just fine. It does, however, have to be made whereas the premade buttercream comes already mixed. In other words, they didn't want to do the work. When he went to pick up the first cake they said they went ahead and made the other cake even though it wasn't needed for 4 more days. My husband had no choice but to take it, since they would have just put it into a fridge to hold (and DRY OUT) until my husband went back to retrieve it. So now we have 2 cakes: both that the frosting will have to be scraped off because it's too sweet, and a cake that's 4 days early. Seriously, guys? It's stuff like this that made us stop buying cakes from the Commissary. $50 worth of cakes: one that will be dried out when it's time to use it, and both will have the icing scraped off because no one will eat it. Today I had the privilege of grocery shopping with my mom in this commissary. I totally miss it (this whole "shopping experience") and coming to any military commissary always reminds me of childhood and my teenage years (Army Brat.) My mom mentioned something when we first came in & I totally agree - "I love the smell of the commissary when you first enter it." (I don't know if it's a special air freshener? It always smells sweet and fresh though, and I've been in many commissaries in different countries!) This one is a-ok by me. Great selection of food, it's clean, and most of all, can't beat the prices! I just wish I could come here more! My dad always said, "Not a dependent anymore? Come here for my weekly, bi-monthly food shopping. Like any other commissary this place has everything you would need. Cheap, good quality produce, and a selection for any type of cuisine, this is the one stop shop to get what you need! The baggers are always always friendly, they always strike up a conversation, and seem to always be in a good mood. The prices and location are the only reason I shop here. It's the closest grocery store my house. Almost all of the employees here annoy the crap out of me. Is it truly necessary to check my ID upon entering and then AGAIN before I use the self checkout register which REQUIRES A VALID ID TO UNLOCK THE REGISTER FOR USE? Plus almost everyone who works the self checkout is rude with the exception of Tony. He is the best employee in the entire store. Stop checking ID's multiple times per shopping trip and go check the produce which half the time has stuff in it that's gone bad. read more

The perks of the military, is having a military ID to enjoy the cheap prices the commissary offers. Out of all the commissary in the Hampton Roads area, Oceana can get the most packed especially with the commissary being the largest in the area. I have been going to this location since they were first built. They revamped the commissary to accommodate the growing population of sailors. Although I hate coming here on occasions with the lines wrapped around especially around holidays and weekends. But it has never stopped me because I'm getting the awesome prices. I totally understand why they get packed, its because the whole Hampton Roads area is swarming with military personnel and everyone from Oceana Base stops here after work. I recommend visiting when they have a tent sale. They also provide coupons so you can save a lot more. I normally come here to grab meat because I can get a family size tray of chicken drums for $3-$4. I can also can stock up on sales and get a good bang for my buck. The coupons at the id check in counter make my day. Sadly, without military privileges and ID many luck out on the great deals. They have a good selection of Filipino essentials on the asian isle and the freezer section. It is convenient for me to come here to prepare my home cooked meals. A complication I've encountered here, are for those women who are in the WIC program. They don't label all their items and unlike other grocery stores with the convenience of sliding your WIC card with the deductions made automatic. You have to make sure you separate your WIC items and be at the WIC cashier isle. There is no sign for WIC only in the cashier line. So you would be surprised just as I did. If you had to encounter these issues. Apparently, there is only one register that will approve WIC items which is register 11. I can't be mad, that their system is disfunctional for WIC holders. I just know I won't be doing WIC at the commissary anymore. On the positive, the lady at customer service gave me a print out of the items to looks for and explained the whole system to me after the fact that I got some of my items..and got diverted to another register. This is why they are rated a 4. But other than that, this commissary is the largest. It isn't connected to the NEX like other stores. It can be a convenience but with the amount of traffic they get of people ..It's good they decided to have this commissary on its own. Also, if you are military. The baggers work for tips only to help you out to the car and load your groceries. It's convenient for the elderly and disabled, military, moms with crying babies and a whole lot of kids..you see the importance of having your groceries taken out for you. I feel it is only right to tip them. Lucky for them I remember being a bagger at Farm Fresh and not getting any tips :(... So I really appreciate the baggers. If you can't tip then let them, just let them know to bag your items in your basket, to take it out yourself. read more

Just moved here from the west coast and used to regularly go to the commissary back there. This place is great! They literally have everything you could need even for my son who is vegetarian. If you can come here, you come for one reason only and that is you save anywhere between 30%-50% on most items compared to Harris Teeter or Farm Fresh. Over the course of a year that equates to a huge saving. The chunk of change I save helps me support my restaurant habit. So in a way the commissary is kind of like my methadone clinic. However, I find coming here a chore. I normally only have time to do it on the weekends (i.e when its busy!) and since my wife often works on weekends, the chore is mine to endure solo. I actually prefer it that way since my better half is something of an impulse shopper. That normally equates to an extra $30 everytime she is with me. But cool things do happen here sometimes. One Saturday I realized I was in line behind Rudy Boesch of Survivor Season 1 fame. Also, its fun to watch retired senior officers have to stand in line with everybody else. I actually saw one guy try to pull rank and get denied head of the line privledges once. As he began to pout I casually strolled by and mentioned (loud enough for others nearby to hear) that I think the adult diapers are in aisle 11. I had saved that one liner for years for just the right situation and this was it! A guy does have to amuse himself while doing the chores afterall. read more

Definitely one of the best & largest commissaries in HR. Our previous favorite was Little Creek. Produce is often the best here but definitely is a hit or miss. Little Creek was our previous favorite for best produce. They have a pretty decent organic produce section if that's your thing. But again, it's hit or miss. The meat & poultry sections are pretty good. Between Little Creek & Oceana, they have different cuts of cow (ie. LA kalbi & skirt steak can usually be found at Little Creek). Only negative is the lack of a seafood department. They do have some seafood next to the pork but no real department. Of course, stay away on pay day (& during the holidays)...unless you totally forget it's pay day and show up, the lines are daunting up they do a pretty good job about making them move. read more

The quality of food you get here is about right for what you pay. Even though I'm in the service, I hate to bash a commissary with a 2 star rating. But like every other review has stated. It is infact a very large commissary; one of, if not the biggest I've shopped in. However bigger doesn't always mean better. The few times I've been in here it seems like every-time ALL of the produce is bad. The onions had flies all over them the last time I was in here and the lemons were also very squishy. DOUBLE CHECK before you buy! Also don't ever count on using you phone in here either, whether it be for looking at recipes or making any calls. Heck there could be some dire emergency and your totally screwed cuz the whole place is a cellular DEAD ZONE! I know it's located in a hurricane prone area but Jacksonville, FL gets more hurricane action and you still have service all over in that commissary. Also it would be nice if they offered "Early bird" shopping at 0600 for 15 items or less. By the time you leave work and come back your better off going to Walmart or Farm Fresh For groceries. ** Overall this place needs to step up their FOOD QUALITY CONTROL. It may be unfair to review this place since it's not available to the general public. But as Virginia Beach is very much a military town, I feel that commissary is a necessary and useful review. As a former Navy brat (my daddy is retired) I never realized the awesomeness of the commissary until I couldn't go anymore. The commissary is a huge grocery store where only military service members and their dependants can shop. The prices are ridiculously low and the selection is unbeatable. And there's no tax on your purchases--Double Bonus! If you're lucky enough to be able to shop here--do it. If not, find yourself a nice military person and beg them to take you with them on your next grocery trip. read more

I'm from California but never shopped at the commissary on camp Pendleton. This one was a delight to discover. They have vegan cheese, veganaise, and all sorts of vegan meat substitutes here that are as affordable as any other products here at the commissary. Plus the whole store is huge, always clean, and while I've seen the line literally wrap around the store, I can usually get my stuff and get out fast. The ethnic food section leaves much to be desired, but that's to be expected in any standard American grocery store. The produce section is terrific, and they have an incredible frozen section. Although I can't complain too much since it is a commissary and not a private consumer driven grocery-but people can be slightly aggravating here and also the workers are usually preoccupied when going through the self checkout and take forever to respond to issues that arise. The selection is not too bad-I get almost everything I need, and they recently expanded to carry a couple items I use regularly and couldn't get there-so that made me immensely happy. Their organic foods and fresh fruits and veggies selection is improving a lot and their deli is great. I love the Sushi that is available in the store and the convenience factor of it being there is great for me because I grab some right before shopping if I arrive hungry so I don't end up buying a bunch of no-no things (BWHAHAHAHA!) The bathrooms are hit or miss...sometimes they are clean and have toilet paper and towels and sometimes they are out. The produce is normally on point-fresh and a large selection, although I have purchased a rotten winter squash once without knowing. One of my main staples-Natural Peanut Butter- is available for CHEAP here-Cheaper than prices in bulk at the clubs. Smuckers Natural Creamy is $2.18 for a 16oz jar. Yes, I know the exact price because I went to the club to buy the Twin Pack of 28oz jars for $10.88. If you do the math the commissary is exponentially cheaper-and this is just one of the many price comparisons. I personally use the self checkout aisles so I can dodge tipPing the baggers (mostly because I don't carry cash), and that contributes to me not having to wait in lines as often-but oh my gosh, let me tell you...Sometimes the lines at the commissary get INSANE! Wrapping all the way into the dairy section. Overall, reasonable amount of choices for healthy options and an acceptable selection on everything else. Could use some interior updates perhaps, and maybe some more attentiveness on the employees parts. read more

Great prices, great service-especially at the meat counter, very knowledgeable about which steaks are best for grilling. They recommended a rib-eye steak. The size of the store allows for plenty of selections of name brand grocery items. And when they have a sale---they have a SALE! Their sidewalk sale is currently going on now. There's always a lil something something for everyone. They always have items on special promotions and sales. The best time is stock up is during the tent sales, I bought 5 cases of Coke products for only $10 dollars. I came here last week and they had Thanksgiving out already during Halloween time. I really enjoyed seeing all the stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, etc out and ready. Since Thanksgiving is my favorite Holiday, I ended up stock up on some of items. Bought a bunch of stuff and only ended up paying about $30 for my entire purchase. Lines can get pretty long sometimes, so try doing self-check out if you can and you save some money and time if you don't feel like tipping. Buying meat here is a must, cheap and affordable. Again, another place not everyone can go to. Too bad. Its annoying as shit most of the time anyway, ESPECIALLY on payday weekend. DO NOT EVER go here right after payday. You will wait forever and ever and be irritated, I promise. Also, people can get CRAZY. Fighting over oreos and shit.. I'm not into shopping cart bumper cars either so, go like, 3 days before payday at 10am and you' ll be good. Other than that, I love this Commissary. Very nice commissary. The prices are alway pretty good and the store is clean. Sometimes the meat selection could be better and the expiration dates are almost to the day. However, most of the items in the store are well packaged and stocked. There is not a better deal as far as groceries around. This is by far the best Comissary in the Hampton Roads area!!!! Not only are their hours of operation VERY convenient, the layout of the comissary is very open and easy to get around. Even when it looks like a lot of people are there, I still managed to cart around with wife and son without bumping into another person. The aisles are very wide and always stocked. The produce is the best I've seen at any Southeast/Mid-Atlantic Region comissary. The people that work there don't walk around with disgruntled looks on their faces, plenty of parking. The customer service isn't the best and it's such a pain trying to hunt down a store worker to help you locate an item. All the people that I've encountered seem "blah."
