    Peach praline pie
    Lisa T.

I kept trying Fresh Market for years, thinking there must be something to attract others. My family is under the weather right now, so we are ordering our groceries for delivery, usually in the morning during weekdays, to ensure items are in stock. Our last order from FM had 5 items: #1 - out of stock for good (still on the website) #2 - temporary oos (come on, out of taffy?!) #3 - out of stock (not sure the reason, was tired asking) #4 - ok #5 - peach praline pie. I cut the pie for the kids, they pocked into it and asked me "what is this white stuff?" You can see the white stuff on the picture up and next to the fork, it is raw dough. The entire middle of the top crust was completely uncooked. I didn't expect to take and bake, so the pie went into trash. Giving one star for each of the two items that were available, except to be fair, it would have to be 1/2 star for the pie.

Lots of fresh, good for you food at a premium price. Kiefer, kombucha and the like can be found here. Need vegan cheese. They've got it. Need awesome fruits and veggies they've got it. Also lots of different pasta sauces. Several varieties of juice. The deli section has a vast array of cheeses, potato salad, chicken and more. The rotisserie chicken is pretty good. The bakery/dessert section is stocked with the most beautiful delectable looking treats.

I love love love love The Fresh Market, always have. Always will. We have one of these back home where I'm from (Roanoke, VA) and I used to love coming in here to look at all the exotic items you can't get at the normal grocery store. My personal favorite is the flower section. They have all kinds of fresh flowers and beautiful things to choose from and they also make beautiful arrangements for a very reasonable price. You can select all of your favorites and they will make the arrangement for you also if you don't know how or don't want to do it when you get home. They have a large coffee area where you can select or mix and match your coffee and grind it to your liking (small or large grinds) as well as their fresh meat and prepped meat section and sweets section. Big fan. If you haven't been here yet - you should give it a try. It reminds me of Whole Foods a lot but I have a special place in my heart for Fresh Market so it's always tops for me.

The Fresh Market is foodie porn in action. Dark and cool, there are aisles and aisles of rich, gourmet goodies and produce. When you walk in, gorgeous fresh cut flowers and complimentary coffee greet you. I was putty in their hands from that point on and it got even better. They have rows of candy, nuts, dried fruit and even dried veggies that you can scoop into bags to take home. Green bean and okra chips?! Phenom! Totally left overloaded with all sorts of snacks that won't last a week. The Fresh Market also has sushi to go, cheeses, wines, anything you can imagine salivating over. If the regular grocery store is my wife, this place is definitely my mistress from now on. Yum.

They have been named a Century Farm in Virginia, and now also a Bicentennial Farm and are proud to still be actively farming. Sustainable farming is a way of ensuring that the land, and all its resources are maintained for future generations. Promoting soil health, managing water runoff and using natural fertilizing techniques are all ways that they are being good stewards of the land. This has always been a way of life, but the business of Coastal Cattle began as an idea of their then12 year old daughter in 2014, and has expanded since then. She wanted to use her knowledge of cattle gained through local 4H livestock club and start a herd. Her very first project steer at the age of 10 was a Hereford and she instantly fell in love with the breed. They are docile, easy to work with, great for children to be around and of course beautiful! She and her sister helped to pick out the first bred heifers and cows that started Coastal Cattle. The original idea was to start raising pure-bred show cattle to be used for our local area 4H Livestock shows as well as other regional livestock competitions. Showing cattle is a lot of work, and a lot of fun, but eventually they started thinking bigger. They were hearing the desires of so many people who want to know where their food is coming from. People want to be in control of what they put into their bodies, and they quickly saw and understood the need for a good product. So expanding into the direct marketing of the beef produced by the ever expanding herd was the natural progression of the farm. Incorporating rotational grazing, and the herd into other farming practices has proven beneficial for the land and the farm. They go hand in hand, crops and livestock. Not only are they producing a good product for the consumers, but they're protecting our natural resources as well.

From Chesapeake it was about a 25 minute drive out to this farm in Pungo. We went early, around 12 , on a Saturday afternoon. We wanted to be the rain. You have to purchase and choose available pick times online. You can arrive anytime but can't do the u-pick until your designated slot time. We arrived and there was plenty of parking. We looked around the market first. It wasn't huge but they had a great variety of different jams, jellies, salsa, baked goods and fresh fruit and veggies. Everything was reasonably priced! We went directly outside the market to a little table to check in for blueberry picking! There young lady was polite . She scanned our qr code and gave us arm bands. She did let us know that there were a couple blackberry bushes out there as well that we could pick also. It isn't advertised because they're aren't a lot of plants. A short walk to the entrance to the patch and there picking began!! It was nice because there weren't a lot of people out so the rows weren't crowded. The bushes still had lots of ripe fruit on them! We picked for about 20 minutes, Paid 8 dollars for our pint and went to the car to take a much needed cool off break. We were told that we could walk or drive over to the orchard. It wasn't a long walk, but in the heat, and if you're carrying a box of peaches, it could be a bit much. We drove over to the orchard, parked and checked in at a little shed nearby. we picked peaches for about twenty minutes and even noticed that there were a couple nectarine trees as well. the peaches were not ripe. However, that did not deter us from picking. A simple trip home and storing them in a brown paper bag would ripen them up perfectly in about three days! We paid 20 for a half peck box. It filled up very quickly. Overall great experience!! We are going back to try the ice cream and to pick apples during that season!

How they have you walk to the stand, pick apples, then walk back was a bit backtracking, and a little much for my disabled self. It is a farm and I dealt with it. It's early in the season so they only had 2 rows of the orchard open, also not their fault, it is still early. The worker at the stand didn't know which apples were in which row which wasn't helpful because we were looking for a specific one and of course murphy's law, we went down the wrong row first. That said, we had a blast! The apples we picked were delicious and I've already made a large batch of apple butter which turned out perfect. Unfortunately I do think we will travel to a different farm next year.
