Specifically I want to review the bakery! I can't believe I forgot to get her name but this beautiful baker helped me find a cinnamon bread that we were looking all over for. They had not gotten some out on the floor yet and she had to package it but she said just give me 2 minutes. I was so happy. We first tried it from a Norfolk location last week and was hoping a more local location had it too. She went above and beyond in helping us out because she noticed us searching around and asked us what we were looking for, if she hadn't we would have left empty handed. These days there are grocery stores everywhere. I will have to say I love the Fresh Market. Every time I am having trouble finding a product. They have it. So I was looking for peanut oil. Just a small bottle to make popcorn the old fashion way. I have looked in 3 grocery stored. I go to Fresh Market. They have it. Prefect. I should have looked there first. I kept trying Fresh Market for years, thinking there must be something to attract others. My family is under the weather right now, so we are ordering our groceries for delivery, usually in the morning during weekdays, to ensure items are in stock. Our last order from FM had 5 items: #1 - out of stock for good (still on the website) #2 - temporary oos (come on, out of taffy?!) #3 - out of stock (not sure the reason, was tired asking) #4 - ok #5 - peach praline pie. I cut the pie for the kids, they pocked into it and asked me "what is this white stuff?" You can see the white stuff on the picture up and next to the fork, it is raw dough. The entire middle of the top crust was completely uncooked. I didn't expect to take and bake, so the pie went into trash. Giving one star for each of the two items that were available, except to be fair, it would have to be 1/2 star for the pie. read more

First let me say I have always been a devoted customer. I buy their rotisserie chicken salad at least 1-2 times a month. The last 2 purchases have been so disappointing. I love love love love The Fresh Market, always have. Always will. We have one of these back home where I'm from (Roanoke, VA) and I used to love coming in here to look at all the exotic items you can't get at the normal grocery store. My personal favorite is the flower section. They have all kinds of fresh flowers and beautiful things to choose from and they also make beautiful arrangements for a very reasonable price. You can select all of your favorites and they will make the arrangement for you also if you don't know how or don't want to do it when you get home. They have a large coffee area where you can select or mix and match your coffee and grind it to your liking (small or large grinds) as well as their fresh meat and prepped meat section and sweets section. Big fan. If you haven't been here yet - you should give it a try. It reminds me of Whole Foods a lot but I have a special place in my heart for Fresh Market so it's always tops for me. read more

This is the worst Fresh Market that I have ever been to. For whatever reason it is impossible to order a sandwich for lunch at this location. Today they flat out refused to make my turkey sandwich, and they were incredibly rude about it. They had all of the ingredients but they simply didn't want to make it, and they offered a beat up nasty roast beef sandwich instead. I don't know what is going on at this store. The Fresh Market tends to be my go-to grocery store. Mostly, because while I enjoy cooking and having a home-cooked meal, I often lack the creativity, patience, and/or time to meal prep every week. So the meal deal has been a game changer for me. $20 for a mea that is l big enough to feed a family of four; the menu changes every week. Everything is chopped and ready to cook. Sometimes they even include dessert. I'll admit, some weeks it is a much better "deal" than other weeks. Even if I am only savings few dollars, I know I am saving a bunch of time planning and prepping. The Fresh Market is like a smaller Whole Foods. Most of the store is for the veggies, bakery, and the deli/meat section. They have a nice selection of wine & beer too. I can usually cross everything off my list here, but not always. The produce is always fresh and they have beautiful flowers. I've never been shocked by the price of the items- but they aren't typically "value" prices. Their sales are fabulous though so I usually just take a look at the weekly ad (found on their website) and go from there. One of the specials usually involves a premium cut of steak only available discounted between a certain time on a certain day. They also have a good chicken breast special on Tuesdays. I love their bakery items, the cheddar rolls have a special place in my heart. If they are out when you visit, I was probably there earlier. The location of this store is perfect for me, close to home and other stores I frequent. I usually always have another errand to run in Hilltop, so I feel extra productive when I go. Everything is clean and the only times things don't seem stocked is when I know I am visiting during a peak time, it is like this at every grocery store. No big deal. Unfortunately, it was a running conversation with my old coworkers about how disappointing the customer service is at this location. This isn't just based on one experience or one employee, there are a few of them that are just unpleasant to interact with. On a number of occasions I have felt like they thought I was deliberately inconveniencing them by being a customer ready to check out or get some meat. I don't think it is just me though, the way they interact with each other makes me wonder if they all dislike each other. I've done an extra lap around the store just trying to wait to get one of the more pleasant ones at check out. I know that "good customer service" can be subjective and I probably wouldn't even mention in in such detail, except it is such a consistent part of my experience to a business I visit multiple times a month for over two years. This place always surprises me. I have to admit - I don't shop here often, but when I do, they don't disappoint. First of all, their sushi is delicious! As are all their pre-made meals. I love this location because of where it is at in Hilltop-just a bike ride from my house. I rode up one day and chained up my bike (it was hard to find a place-had to use a table) and grabbed some groceries and rolled on home. This store has been offering gourmet goodies and an alternative to traditional groceries well before Trader Joe's came around. With Trader Joe's now right across Laskin Road, you should hit up both stores for a well-rounded pantry. While Trader Joe's is great for organic options and inexpensive items, Fresh Market offers a variety of European snacks and foods (like Ciao Bella gelato and Cadbury biscuits), fresh food entrees for a ready-made meal, and gourmet bakery delights. They have bulk bins for just about every nut, granola, snack mix and candy. I love the white chocolate snack mix (white chocolate-covered pretzals, nuts, etc). The flower selection at The Fresh Market is unbeatable. I always get myself a bouquet when I shop there. They have unique flowers you won't find anywhere else. A dozen roses usually runs $7.99 and there are many colors to choose from. This is a great place to stop if you want to buy flowers or a plant for someone. They have a nice wine/beer selection too, though I usually go to Trader Joe's for that (no one has ever noticed they are drinking $5 wine at my house). But again, if you are looking for a nicer bottle of wine for a gift, hit up fresh market. After hearing rave reviews from my sister for the past year, I bought the Fresh Market Thanksgiving dinner for 3-5 ( turkey breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry relish with walnuts, green beans, plus add-on butternut squash with pecans and cranberries). It was a sad disappointment. The turkey, green beans, stuffing and gravy had no discernible seasoning and were bland and tasteless. The mashed potatoes were redeemed by adding copious amounts of butter, salt and pepper at the table. Fantastic store. Often, I've found their prices (for fruit & veg) to be comparable or cheaper than the local groceries (and by far, much fresher!). Great selection of hard-to-find items, such as gourmet cheeses, sauces, mustards, chips, butters, etc. They are meant to be a replacement for Whole Foods - they are a totally different concept. I actually liked TFM's more relaxed, dimly lit, nicely decorated environment to WF. The only reason this is getting four stars instead of five is the folks behind the seafood/meat counters are usually unfamiliar with what they are selling and often seem either overworked or unhappy. Management needs to make sure they are just as cheerful and informed as the checkout folks, who always end my shopping experience with a laugh (in a good way!). read more

This place probably has some of the highest quality meats and produce of any supermarket in Hampton Roads but you will be paying top dollar for just about everything. The meat display at the butcher counter will make your eyes pop out even before you look at the prices. The cuts are gorgeous but most of them are only for special occasions unless you are fully loaded (i.e. you live at Croatan Beach or something). What keeps me coming to this store is the bulk coffee selection. They have some fantastic but reasonably priced coffee beans. Almost all of the selections are $9.99 a pound which may sound like a lot but it really isn't. Most bags you get in a supermarket these days will cost between $6 to $8 for 12 ounces instead of the full 16. They even have a Jamaican Blue Mountain Blend which is mostly something else with a little bit of Blue Mountain thrown in but it is still delish. If you want 100% Blue Mountain (they have it), it will cost you $30 a pound. But, hey, at least they have it! read more

Lately I've only been hitting up the farmers markets, butchers and asian markets, but if I had to go to a supermarket, I'd go here. Huge floral section with all kinds of beautiful plants, and a whole wall of fresh cut flowers. Gorgeous produce section which is often CHEAPER than Food Lion and Farm Fresh! The meat and seafood counters are great. Everything is fresh and nothing is pre-packaged. You get to pick exactly which pieces you want. They also have specialty cheeses as well as products from Yoder Dairies. There are the standard fare ridiculous specialty foods ($2.99/gallon distilled water, etc) but I'd much rather shop here than another supermarket any day. read more

I enjoy the Fresh Market for 3 main reasons: 1. The staff are very sweet. Unless it is unaturally and unholy sorts of busy inside the Fresh Market, they will always greet you and check on your needs. I have (sadly) become friends with both employees that work the sushi station - which is the second reason I love it here. 2. CHEAP FAST SUSHI - Real down & dirty like. In the door, grab a roll, check on my sushi chef behind the counter, give thanks & out the door I go. For about 8 dollars a box, I'm there about once a week. It's not groundbreaking, flavor-bursting stuff but it is much better than chicken nuggets with a side of shame. 3. Specialty Foods/Cheese - Mascarpone, the creamy sweet stuff of Tiramisu requirement, is only about $4 dollars a container here. And that's for the made in the USA variety. I sometimes just like to walk around and go "Hmmm, what can I make with this" While Fresh Market may not have the shiny appeal of the new Whole Foods, it's dependable & I like it. read more

Fresh Market at Hilltop has the best produce, deli and bakery. We also buy very good meats and seafood too. It is just the right size store that you can find what you need quickly and not spend hours doing your shopping. The employees are very helpful and friendly. The store is very clean and they all wear masks and customers are requested to do the same. They clean the carts too! We purchased the best crab cakes yesterday and they are the Friday special! Our cashier was Brenda and she was very good and had a very helpful young man bag the groceries to expedite our checkout. The store employees are the best! What else can I say that hasn't already been stated in previous reviews? This place is great. I enjoy just walking the aisles, looking at the great stuff and taking in the great smells. And, we do occasionally buy something! The first time we went in, we walked out with a bunch of baked goods and some granola. Alot of unhealthy stuff but great. Big cupcakes, a great brownie, and a pecan bar. Yum. We went back today for a few things and the bakery items again were the main haul. Yeah, we like our carbs. The croissants were the big hit today. I was hoping for more, but compared to the other grocery stores around here, I'm ecstatic!! I've really had problems with produce since I moved here in March. And the selection of groceries has been less than I'd hoped for as far as ethnic items, speciality goods, etc. The produce here is the best that I've seen in Hampton Roads. The meat counter was nice and the bakery selection was very good -- the breads smelled wonderful. I was a little disappointed in the bulk items, I was hoping for more. No oats here. And the spices weren't all that special. The one thing I needed was Garam Masala and they don't carry it. I did think it was weird that when I checked out, the checker bagged everything and then just left it all on the bagging area. She didn't load it back in my buggy or anything. So, I had to load it all up by myself. Not perfect, and not a huge selection, but it's a good start. read more

This place seemed like a Whole foods on steroids! Could've been the price hike too. Needless to say I didn't shop for anything in this store but it was AWESOME looking at everything in here. It just felt like a step above whole foods as they have ALOT of stuff. Would I shop here? yes and no, given that other reviews have stated that prices are about $2 higher than whole foods. I personally wasn't looking hard at the prices of the different products when I stopped in to look around. It kind of felt like being in a high class candy-store. My friend however did find a Japanese green tea she hasn't had since she was in Japan. She was excited and happy to know where she can come back for more. **Overall the ambiance and feel of the store makes you wanna stay and look at everything. The Fresh Market and I have been dating for about a year, I'd sort of like to break up- but I don't think anyone better is coming along anytime soon. Here are my reviews by department: Produce Department: 3 stars. They lost stars because in the past year I've bought a lot mangos, pineapples, etc.. that have accidentally been frozen. I get home, cut them open, and they are brown. 3-5 bucks in the trash (not worth the 20 minute drive to return them) Dry Foods: 5 Stars Dairy: 4 stars. Shopped a few days ago, noticed milk set to expire in two days on the shelf. Luckily I looked this time before placing it in my cart. Seafood Department: 2 stars. When I first started shopping at TFM I had no issues with the seafood. About four months ago spent 18 bucks for a pound of fish. Opened the package 24 hours later and thought it smelled funny. Decided to cook it anyway (maybe it was me?)- threw out the whole dish. To TFM's credit I did email customer service and they sent us a gift card. I purchased seafood a few more times after this and had another issue. Stopped buying their seafood. Meat Department: 4 stars. Again, when we first started shopping I loved the meat department. Last week we got some chicken cutlets. I went to cook them 24 hours later and they smelled foul. Threw them out. Deli Meats/Cheeses: 3 stars: We've bought lunch meat almost every week. They are ridiculously slow at this counter. Yesterday it took 14 minutes to get a 1/2lb of turkey and 1/4 lb of prosciutto. I was the only person in line. (Update: Went the other day, service was normal speed) Bakery: 5 stars Customer service: 5 stars. My advice, be diligent about asking what's fresh behind the meat counter. Very interesting and high quality supermarket. They offer all the exact same things that a standard supermarket would offer, but the key is the high quality of what they offer. Their produce, baked goods, butcher and deli options are very good. On occasion I have gotten a few things from the deli section or the prepared food section that were either a day old or too plain (sandwiches or a holiday squash dish I purchased) but overall, they are very good. Worth it for special occasions or a treat unless you make a lot of money. This is not the place to go for standard family grocery shopping. You will walk away with lint in your pocket if you do this! Go to buy good cuts of meat, freshly baked pastries and cakes (with high quality ingredients) for special occasions like Valentines Day or Christmas OR go to get yourself an ex$pensive / unique treat from one of their bins of nuts, candy or freshly made nut butters... their whole bean coffee selection is very good too.
