This is our fourth treat to camp megunticook and probably our last. Has the camp ground changed no, still nestled in the Maine woods, with a cliff top view you can walk to and see the ocean beyond. However it's been sold out to a corporation and as it's typical they are only after the $$$. You can not pre book for the following year, and the have a season camp manager, who although very nice has no answers to anything other than call the 1-800 number. We met many ppl over the week we were here and most of them repeat travelers who agree this may be their last year due mainly to the attitude and corporate hospitality, aka none. It's a shame, this was a nice family feel and accommodating camp ground. Our family have been coming here for three generations. The campground itself is pretty much unchangeable, the amenities could be upgraded and spruced up, but we come for the feel of the grounds. The cold corporate feel it's already having is making us think twice sadly. read more

Overall this is an adequate camp ground. I felt like the website was somewhat misleading because it seemed like there was access to the sea (if your a rock climber you can make it otherwise it's not safe. The river that is on the property is more like a stream and aside of looking at it there isn't much else you could do with it... You have to pay additional for Internet Access which is typical for state campgrounds but I thought it was included... The site itself was clean and well maintained. Nice campground on the ocean in midcoast Maine. This is the first campground I've been to with my travel trailer that I had a pull-through spot. Unfortunately the sites are very close together and the way the road is constructed we had traffic both at the front and the back of our camper. We found the campers around us had many visitors in various vehicles causing traffic in the campground to get backed up easily. You wouldn't think you would have a lot of traffic in a campground but it really seemed like there was here. That's really the big downside I found otherwise the facilities were very clean, the staff was very nice, they have a lovely spot on the water where they do lobster bakes. You can also stroll down and sit and watch the ocean. They also have trash pickup at your campsite which is very convenient. read more

We stayed here in August 2019. We have a 37' Class A toeing and requested a pull thru site. This place is a diamond in the rough. Great location for local sightseeing and great food. Close enough to walk down and sit by the water with a glass of wine. Peaceful and rustic. Owners were very kind and helpful in providing us with directions to see all the local lighthouses. Don't expect a fancy resort. This is a hidden gem among tall trees near the ocean. I would definitely stay here again. Price was good too. read more

This campground is very expensive. There are no TV stations nor do they have cable TV. At the price this campground charges that is unacceptable. The lady that checked us in was very pleasant and helpful. She told us they were going to do a major upgrade this winter. It really needs it. It is clean. I went on my camping trip early this year to beat the crowds. First one I went to hadn't opened for the season yet so luckily I had a few bookmarked on Yelp and this one was the next closest campground. They had just opened the previous day for the season so it was not crowded at all. In fact only 2 campers and about 3 other people in tents. I loved the peacefulness but I'm sure in high demand season during the summer it's not so quiet. During the day anyway. The lady at the front desk was super friendly and informative. She took time to tell me about the grounds, drive around and pick my own site and tell me about stuff to do in the surrounding area. I went during off season so it was a few bucks cheaper to rent a campsite but it's still a great deal at $32 a night. It's more if you want electric or hookups and runs the highest at around 70 a night if you want a cabin. You definitely want to make a reservation though and not swing it like I did. I bought a bundle of firewood for $5 and it lasted me both nights. My phone didn't get great service but they have WiFi that you can pay for. You get an hour for free but if you want more you can get it for like 8 bucks a night. Not a bad deal. They have excellent showers here. Indoor and out. I loved how big the indoor showers were. Very roomy and water was nice and warm both days. Some washers and dryers to clean your clothes and they have a little store you can buy amenities at. There's a pool too although it was too early in the season when I went so it hadn't opened yet. This was May 16th. They opened May 15th. Dog friendly here as well which is a major plus for dog lovers like me. The best part was the view of Penobscot bay. Incredible!! I was in awe. Outstanding. There's also a playground, volleyball court and a place to play horseshoes. Checkout was easy and when leaving a lady (maybe one of the owners?) came up to me wanting to make sure I had a good stay and to tell me about a few things in the area. Very nice. I'll definitely be back here and highly recommend it. That view by itself is worth it! read more

Hands down, one of the best rustic campgrounds we have stayed. Scott and Katheryn were fantastic to help us with our travel plans and guided us to local sites and eateries. Thank you, Scott! So much local lore and history were shared by the campground staff including the hosts. All amenities are clean and tended to as are all the details needed to camp including a laundry. Showers were great with nice hot water and room to set up toiletries and lots of hooks. Our site was fairly level and backed up to wooded area. The area on the ocean is a fairly steep walk down and back but worth it. We took a bottle of wine and sat to view the eagles, seals and other birds feeding on schools of fish on the surface of the water. There is a bench swing, tables and other benches to enjoy the scene. Lovely. Though we didn't use the pool, we noted it was being used even after Labor Day and was clean and well cared for. The camp office is so unique with artist rendering of the camp area, lobsters, local sea man and other fun art. The camp store sells canned local beer, assorted wines and other drinks. The only downside, we were charge $10 for using the dump, which is unusual. The staff told us they plan to add more sites with electric and more improvements to come. All in all, a good time at this campground enjoying Camden, Rockport, Rockland and St George penninsula as well as Owls Head and area. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here and we love this campground. It's forested and beautiful in the campground and also has an amazing scenic viewpoint with chairs and benches overlooking the ocean. The campsites are kept well clean and all have water, most have electricity so there's plenty of options for RVs. But you can also pay a tad less for just a tent site, or a tad more and upgrade to a cozy cabin. The hosts Kathy and Scott are super rad people, very friendly and personable. They really care about their campground and work hard to keep it running in such great shape. They keep a fridge of craft beer for sale in the office and have lots of other things to buy in the store, anything that you need and forgot to bring with you. They also care about the environment and offer recycling- actually they pick up their trash for you at your campsite in the morning. We will definitely be back!! read more

Wow, Love this place! There is a change in owners and the new ones are great! Doing some renovations...the new shower reminded me of "spa like"...lol. The view at the picnic area in the back was to die for. Watch out for the Poison Oak in the back (not the property of the Resort) The traffic from the main road was a little noisy...so try to stay away from those campsites. This campground has new owners and they are doing a great job updating. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We stayed here in an RV on site #2. It is one of the few pull thru sites. It was roomy and shaded and a close walk to the seashore! Yes the seashore a short walk down a road in the campground. OMG what a view! The sounds of the ocean hitting the rocky shore. We were there in late October so it was quiet. They added a covered bench swing that overlooks the ocean. So peaceful I didnt want to leave. They also added additional seating and a large firepit near the ocean's edge. There was also a large firepit /steamer and picnic tables where they have clambakes for the campers! Was glad to hear one of the past owners John was back in the area and helping to update the campground. Cant wait to go back next year! read more

One of the best! The staff is very friendly and cool to talk to. They sell a variety of normal camping items including cheap firewood, but they also sell local craft beer!!!! I was amazed. One of the first things I did when arriving to Megunticook was take a shower because I had just come from blackwoods campground in Acadia where there are no showers! The showers at Megunticook are shockingly clean and spacious, they're doing everything right there. Some neighbors mentioned it would be nice if there was another bathroom facility at the other side of the campground (because there is only one by the entrance) but there was a portapotty which we didn't mind using at all. Coming to Megunticook was refreshingly peaceful after leaving blackwoods where there were a lot of loud groups. At Megunticook, it seemed like most people camping were older couples staying in RVs or families with young kids. It was a very wholesome vibe, no loud partying college kids. The staff seems sincere in their no tolerance quiet hours, which I appreciate. The view is not to be left out!!!! It is a beautiful space with seating spread out so different groups can have privacy. The staff did a really great job with this area. We camped in a tent near the brook at spot 47 and there weren't a lot of bugs, what a relief! I recommend this campground endlessly!!! But a tip - try to pick a spot away from the road because you can hear traffic in some spaces. We did hear some traffic at our spot but it wasn't too bad. The spots near the ocean looked the absolute best. read more

My wife and I were initially disappointed with the lack of customer service at the Megunticook Campground. We spent a great deal of time calling and leaving messages to the office during business hours, but not one ever picked up the phone. We were forced to book online since no one was answering (which came with a $5 online booking fee). Having answered the phones or provided the information on their website, we would have known that the cabin I booked did not come with sheets, pillows or a refrigerator. Lucky, we expected the worst and packed those things anyway (minus the fridge). I'm not sure if I would book the cabin again. The bulk of the cabins are located near the entrance of the campsite and are within earshot of the road next door. Additionally, these cabins are right on top of each other and provide next to no privacy. The cabin that we rented was at the back of the grounds and was along the West Penobscot Bay with two other cabins. This cabin was in a beautiful well wooded area and came with a fire ring, a picnic bench and a charcoal grill. Fortunately for us, no one had rented out the other two cabins and we had the area to ourselves. If however, those cabins would have been occupied, I can see our vacation having turned out much differently. Similar to the cabins at the front of the site, the ones in the back are virtually on top of each other. The grounds themselves were very well maintained and the bathrooms were equally pristine. The pool also looked immaculate. Our cabin was well sized and had a single bunked bed and a double bed. The cabins came equipped with electricity and a water tap outside. Make sure to pack chairs and a table, our cabin did not have either of these things (though I think other cabins may have had a chair). The grounds are within short driving distance of both Rockland and Camden and serves as a nice middle ground for visiting both. The area that is on the bay is absolutely gorgeous and is furnished with picnic benches and chairs. My wife and I ended every day here with a bottle of wine. If you are looking to spend some time in the area visiting the numerous sites I recommend this campground for the value and cleanliness, however with it being so small, solitude is something that you may not find. read more

This campground is awesome. The owners are very friendly and helpful,...full of great suggestions. The campsites are spacious, newer picnic tables, lots of trees, and nice fire pits. There is a great overlook area to sit and get a beautiful view of the ocean. There were sites without hookups along a really beautiful stream. The bathrooms are very new and NICE! The indoor showers were being renovated but the OUTDOOR SHOWERS were awesome,... spacious and made of cedar. We loved them and the temperature was only in the 50's!! Most of the cabins have to much highway traffic noise..except the 3 by the ocean. Whoever built the cabins sat them on the ground so we could actually hear ants chewing at night,on the log walls....Campground is clean, showers clean...trash is picked up. These are not really tent sites;far to rocky and quite a few are in wet lands stream area with mosquitos as big as a small hawk. Beautiful ocean footage. Several cabins have leaked in the past and #3 had a missing roof section. The door is far from bug tight and light comes in all 3 edges as well as 'light tunnels' thru t and g boards on roof where they overlap the wall. The people are very nice. Firewood???All pine. Get your hard wood elsewhere. Pool was very clean. In some sections the RV's are way too close together. AS a whole, the place looks like it needs attention and some degree of up keep. read more

A quaint campground offering cabins, tent sites and hookups. We stayed in a cabin, which happened to be near the pool and volleyball net,as well as the camp store and bathhouses l. Unfortunately, the closer you are to the bath house, the closer you are to the main road and farthest from the ocean. So, all you hear are cars all night. The view of the bluffs have a sitting area set up with chairs and a fire pit. The camp sites are not right on the ocean but some of the closer ones will allow you to hear the waves. There is no swimming or boating as ylthe campground and land is well above sea level. The cabins are small with a bunk bed and full size bed. Bring your own sheets and pillows-- and I'd recommend an air mattress as their mattresses are hard as rocks! We've stayed at other cabins in campgrounds and we appreciate the mini fridges that others provide, as there is no fridge at this one. Bring your coolers and keep purchasing ice! Each site has a water spigot, so be prepared to wash dishes there as the dish sink at the bath house isnt hooked up. Hot free showers, relatively clean bathrooms, and a large pool! And you are close to hiking areas and touristy towns. read more

This was a nice, clean campground. The wooded camp sites were very nice with stone surrounded fire pits and wood picnic tables. The campground was also very quiet. They also pick up your garbage every day by 10. The staff is very friendly. My only real complaint is that there is no easy access to bathrooms. There is only one central bathroom toward the front of the campground so it is a very long walk for most or you have to drive up and there are only a couple parking spaces by the bathrooms and showers. This causes more traffic in the campground than necessary. That said, the facilities are nice and the showers are very good. They do have a pool (heard it was unheated) and other amenities but we did not take advantage of those. Firewood is overpriced pine that burns in a few minutes. There are lots of cheaper and better options outside the campground. read more

I called the campground with a valid family emergency asking to cancel and for a refund. They showed no compassion for my ailing father in law and no flexibility with their policy. We are returning campers to this campground and were trying to support local Maine businesses during the pandemic. Their kindness was not returned. We are saddened by the declining health of our father and moving our dates will not help us as we need to be here for his remaining days and after his death. What a thing to suggest! We will not be returning to this unsympathetic place and will share our experience with other campers. A little money is more important to them then their customers returning. How sad read more

Megunticook is Beautiful! The campsite is clean. The waterfront view is gorgeous with a cute BBQ seating area nearby. The Pool is clean and goes fairly deep, very refreshing! There is a cute sandpit for kids. The bathrooms/showers are spotless. Certain campsites are larger than others (for the same price), you can call and ask about the sq ft. The BEST part is you can set-up camp and leave it! No one will steal anything! So awesome! TOTALLY different than camping with the Bears at the Adirondacks, but that's fun as well. Love this place! Hope there's one like this closer to NYC. MAJOR WARNING: Do NOT give them your phone #, you will be put on this call list and they will call you (automated) over and over and leave 5 min long messages on your voicemail. Tent camped for three nights. This campground is very cool. (For tent camping I recommend the lower sites as they are further away from the RVs.) The waterfront is magical, the owners are super great and the campground is well run. Bonus: free showers, pool, and a very cute common area/lodge. The campground is very close to Camden, Rockport and Rockland so if you want dinner out it is a quick jaunt into the "city". Perfectly located for exploring and way better than spending a bunch of money on hotels. read more

We recently gathered here for our family reunion.We absolutely love it here and plan on returning next year. The owners,Scott and Catherine went out of their way to make sure our stay was enjoyable and our reunion went off without a glitch.Due to rain,we need to rethink our plan & location.....We ended up using the recreation hall at their sister campground,so with much gratitude to them,our reunion was a success.....and so much fun. The campground is clean & the new outdoor showers are beyond amazing!!!!The Ocean walk area is amazingly beautiful,peaceful & serene.We can't wait to come back here next year.I camp a lot & this was by far the best experience overall that I've ever had!! read more

Beautiful and well laid out campground in the deep woods but just off of Highway one. One drawback was site 87 was a healthy 20 minute walk uphill from the nearest bathroom. The bathroom and shower block, use the outdoor showers as they're excellent, are located by the entrance to the campground really far from the other sites. An added bonus is the pool and all the offerings of the main house. Would recommend. read more

My friend and I arrived late at night in a storm last May, feeling tired and wary from treacherous travel. Scott and Catherine welcomed us in and out of the rain, and set us up with an amazing cabin for the evening. The following morning was quiet and foggy, but the cliffs and ocean were still beautiful, and Scott's coffee gave us a great boost to continue on our way. Thanks guys! Stumbled in last night because we needed a place to sleep. Found a beautiful little campground with very welcoming friendly hosts. Turns out they were having a pig roast and band which were both loads of fun. And we got to finish the night with a campfire right down at the shore with the owners. I enjoyed the stay. Pros: Best facilities in my life, and I grew up going to campgrounds. Showers have the usual, bit minimal dinge, which is what comes with having a campground shower. Definitely kept to a minimum though. Very well cleaned. Outdoor showers are a nice treat. Bathrooms are VERY clean. Immediate access to Rt. 1. Sites are at are very level. Spent no time leveling the pop-up. Nice pool. (I didn't have time to use it, but the place was sunny and not too cold) Cabins if you want them. Nice, large cook area by the water. All in all, the best maintained site I've seen in years! Cons: VERY close to Rt. 1. Harley's sounding out at 3am. Construction trucks at 6....Not sea sound, but diesel sound. No direct shore access. While there is still a nice view, dipping the toes in would have been nice. Given how good the place is, it's a small sacrifice. The whole site is on a bluff, so they can't possibly be faulted. The sites are cheek-by-jowl, so there is only privacy at a few spots. As usual with campers, most people were very nice, but don't go expecting privacy. All in all, I'd recommend this place to others, and return there again. read more

We rented a waterfront cabin for two nights (with pretty short notice) and couldn't believe how affordable it was-- Megunticook is an incredible value, especially given all the amenities and the views. We unfortunately had a short stay, but Scott gave us a ton of recommendations for how to spend our time locally, and everything we did was absolutely amazing. The cabins are clean, charming, and rustic (and individually themed!) The bathrooms are pristine. The showers are in their own individual rooms rather than stalls-- it's very evident that this place has received a lot of love. It's also worth noting how accommodating the owners were when we told them we wouldn't arrive until late at night-- they made our arrival absolutely seamless. And as for the proximity to the ocean... it was pitch black when we got to the cabin, and while we settled in, we listened to what sounded like strong wind in the trees. When we walked out the next morning, we left the cabin and realized that the sound was actually waves! Incredible views. Recently stayed with many of my family for a reunion the staff and owners were wonderful. Made us feel like we were staying with family. They offered us the use of their lobster pots and boilers. I stopped at the store for ice and realized I had forgotten my wallet they let me take the Ice on a promise off paying when I could. very beautiful ocean view, Clean bathrooms and awesome out door showers. highly recommend you are in Rockport you stay here! read more

We have a 37' class A Motorhome. The sites in the Campground are very tight. Expect to do a lot of maneuvering to get in. Some of the pull through are not really pull through sites. The roads are very rough, especially after a rain storm. Sewer system needs to added for all the RV sites and the cable system needs upgrading read more

Perhaps the worst customer service for a campground we have encountered anywhere. It appears that this campground is under construction. The sites are wooded and very tight. Most are not very level and include tree roots and stumps. No attention to the size of your rig. Not suitable for large RVs. 2 stars is for location only read more

I was sad to leave this campground today. I have been on a week long road trip that has already logged 1000 miles and this campsite was the best one I stayed at by far. The new owners were the friendliest people who shared amazing insight on the local area. They also maintain the campsite to a high standard by keeping everything very clean and peaceful. To top it all off, this campsite has one of the best views of the bay and it was the perfect way to relax after long days of hiking. I have the full intention to stay here the next time I'm in the area. read more
