Nice beach. There was a lot of wind. And a lot of dogs. Had also a very good lunch. We will go back to the beach.

The beach was brisk as it was winter time but offered beautiful views on a sunny days as the sun glistened over the waves. Plus nice views of some rock features that included an arch within the ocean. On the beach we found a selection of shells and remains of crabs. Plus there was a lot of wood that washed ashore. There is a small parking lot by the beach. Otherwise street park is available further out. I imagine during the summer the beach is busy and park is tight. Bathrooms are located next to parking lot. Main Street of this small town is just a short distance away where you can grab so food and/or drinks! Cheers!

But anyways, I came to Rockaway Beach to celebrate my friend's surprise birthday bonfire. The beach is clean with not too many people since it isn't considered one of the more touristy ones nearby like Cannon or Seaside. You're also allowed to have fire pits here which is lovely, just make sure to keep away from the nearby brush. Sunset was gorgeous, and it wasn't wildly cold for an Oregon summer. We did have a strange experience though where someone lost a kid and we did a search party (yes, the kid was found), so that was an interesting way to end the birthday bonfire. Regardless of that, would recommend anyone to come visit here!

Varied winding trails from the parking lot through gorgeous trees. The trails go off in different directions with decent signage along the way. Let's be real, the Oregon coastline is gorgeous no matter where you decide to stop off, and Short Sand is no different. Two creeks emerge from the trees flowing onto the sands and into what feels like a huge "cove" with great waves (at least this day) and a lovely beach. Beautiful spot! I can see why it's so busy during most of the year, but it's sooo peaceful right now during the winter!

This summer however, we drove from Seattle to Oregon along the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Our destination was the beach, specifically, Cape Meares. It somehow never dawned on me, that I would not need my swimwear! I love to swim, couldn't imagine hanging out at this beach house for a week, without my swimwear, so I brought all my gear from Hawai'i. What a different beach experience this was. Even though, it was August! Not only did I not take out my swimwear out of my suitcase but I had to wear my turtle neck sweaters everyday, while exploring this beach . No swimming in these cold waters, not even in the summer! The only reason we had our turtlenecks, uggs, coats, gloves & jackets was we stopped in Alaska before Seattle to go halibut/black cod fishing before our stop in Seattle. So glad I had my warm clothes when we arrived in Cape Meares. It was really cold, funny to me ...because it was just as cold as Alaska. Exploring this beach was very cool. Lots of things we don't see in Hawai'i. Watching the seagulls catch Dungeness crabs, razor clams & fish for dinner was my favorite pastime for the week. I also enjoyed watching the fresh mountain water run off and marry into the sea . Sunrise and sunset walks were mesmerizing. Discovering and plucking interesting things off the sand every morning was also fun. Things like squid, parts of other creatures & Dungeness crab bodies was most common. Loved the interesting colors , shapes & sizes of the starfish & sea shells. Spent time wondering what I would cook using the extremely large kelp that washed up on shore. At night, it appears that wild buffalo and wild horses run on this large wide stretch of beach. We never saw any but the folks around us who lived in the neighborhood told us about them. We did see quite a bit of animal tracks on our third morning. It's foreign territory for me to be at a beach house for a week without actually swimming. Would I return? Absolutely. It was quite different from any beach that I've ever experienced. Opening my perspective of beach life and how others go to the beach.

Nothing but sunshine greeted us. No rain, fog or clouds dampened our road trip. The weather this week where we visited: Coos Bay, Florence, Newport, Yachats, Depoe Bay forecasted rain and wind with even a gale warning in some parts. The Oregon Coast is so beautiful! Thor's Well in Yachats at high tide was amazing to see. At low tide we saw some brave folks walk down towards the edge of that gaping hole. In Florence we descended down 208-ft in an elevator to the Sea Lion Caves... we didn't get a chance to see any sea lions at the time but the cave was cool to see. In Newport was where we saw sea lions bask and roll about at the docks just below Clearwater Restaurant and Port Dock One in Historic Bayfront. FREE! No matter the season, the Oregon Coast is a rejuvenating getaway. We enjoyed visiting the coastal cities, admiring lighthouses, making footprints in the sand, dining on the coast, checking out unique souvenir shops, seeing miles and miles of public coastline that continue to be free and public... captivated by the beauty of the mighty Pacific Ocean. Let's go! Review #3262

Well, for now anyway. It's mind blowing how much the beach landscape changes in just a year... Every low tide, the remnants of an ancient spruce forest emerge along the beach to the left of Proposal Rock. These historic tree stumps are over 2000 years old. My first visit was in early June 2022 and there were so many stumps - many of which were well over my head and I'm about 5'3"! But they're almost gone now - I visited again July 2023 and most of them are buried by sand now. Apparently this is a cyclical thing along the Oregon coast. These ancient relics were buried completely for many years - only to be unearthed by a series of coastal storms back in the late 90s. So anytime there's a series of coastal storms causing big waves, sand gets washed away and more of the stumps are revealed. It's about 1/2 mile walk to get to the ghost forest from the parking lot. Most of the walk is through deep sand and then you have to cross the tidal river so you're gonna get wet - highly recommend some decent water shoes. Back in June 2022 on my first visit, at low tide, this river was super fast flowing and deep - came up to my knees and calves at the shallow parts. Definitely a little intimidating - I had to do some rock scrambling at the base of Proposal Rock first and then make my way to where the river emptied into the sea where the waves slowed the water down lol. It didn't help that I was recovering from a broken ankle though so it's probably not as bad haha! But this time, in July 2023, the river had shifted, was about 2/3rds smaller, only came up to my ankles and was completely still - not flowing at all. Really crazy how dramatically the amazing natural features of this beach change over short amounts of time. The stumps are absolutely covered in barnacles - goosenecks, acorn barnacles, thatched barnacles - I tried to find the fabled Giant Barnacles but couldn't lol. The tide pools had so many starfish and I even saw an adorable harbor seal swimming up the river as the tide came in searching for fish - and I saw some Bald Eagles around Proposal Rock - just so much to see here! There's a tiny little village area at the trailhead with a great little cafe and a general store with its own little cafe. Plenty of parking in the beach lot if you come early - but it was completely packed by 10am. There are clean bathrooms with changing areas at the parking lot. On the other side of the lot is a wildlife preserve where salmon migrate through seasonally - just so much nature to see here - it's awesome!

The only downside is beach access. If you follow Google Maps from downtown, it may lead you to a stair-heavy entrance with no ADA access and very limited parking -- not ideal for strollers, wheelchairs, or anyone with mobility needs. Tip: skip the default route and go to W. Gower Street instead. It's flat, easy, stroller-friendly, and takes you directly onto the sand without stairs. Also, expect strong wind along the shoreline. A hooded windbreaker is highly recommended -- even on calm-looking days, the wind can be surprisingly intense. Overall, Cannon Beach is a 5-star destination. Just knowing the right access point and coming prepared for the weather makes the experience even better.

I loved walking through the artsy streets filled with galleries, specialty shops, and cozy cafés. I was able to slow down away from city life, shop for a handmade memento, and sit with a latte watching the waves. On a breezy afternoon, I saw people flying their kites and took advantage of the open beach breeze, so fun to watch. If you want a beautifully scenic beach getaway that's both peaceful and inspiring, Cannon Beach is absolutely worth a stop.

Well, Neskowin looks almost like Redondo Beach in comparison. I know! Ewww, huh?!?! The saving grace is that unless it's a summer weekend it's just never all that crowded. You can meander north out of the Lilliputian parking lot and reach the Nestucca flowing into the Pacific, that is, unless it's a winter high tide. Then you run the risk of getting trapped on the north side of the group of rocks shown in the attached photo, that is, if you can get through at all. It's a decently long walk (20-30 minutes) up to the Nestucca. The landscape is always undergoing changes due to the Pacific Ocean pounding away, so keep your wits about you.
