As the father to a car-crazy teenager, when it came time for my son to begin his behind-the-wheel training, TRTS was the only solution we considered. Each two-hour lesson with Steven Unland and Jim Sewell was thorough and my son enjoyed conversing with Steven and Jim as he drove. At the end of each lesson, I was given a session review sheet containing the things they covered during the driving lesson and feedback for any areas that my son needed to work on before the next lesson. Thanks to the training that TRTS provided, my son confidently and effortlessly passed his CA DMV behind-the-wheel driving test with only a one point deduction.

From purchasing the sessions, to scheduling the sessions, and to scheduling the CA DMV test, it was such an easy process. Our daughter really felt at ease and comfortable with instructors Catherine Steveley and Dan Younger. They really understand how to instruct/connect with a new youth driver. Thank you! When Bob came to our house for my son's first lesson he was kind and knowledgeable, letting us know what to expect. My son had a great experience and at the end Bob spoke with us and gave us things to work on with him. All three lessons were amazing, he even gave us tips and tricks for the test and suggested which DMV to go to. Our son passed with flying colors and has a great driving record (he has been driving for 3 years). I am writing this a few years later because we moved away from Irvine and had to find another company for our daughter. Her experience was not as good and we did not feel that she was ready to be driving on her own even after that company signed off on it. I immediately called Varsity and they found her a time to work with Bob and we drove down to Irvine for it. In just two hours he taught her so much, he went through everything and corrected her previous instruction. She is a much more confident and safer driver because of him. I have heard good things about the dealer on San Fernando Rd in Glendale, as well as the one at Mt Sac. But I have some problems with the guys in Pasadena/ Altadena. 1) The classroom time was useless. They were just filling up the time. 2) The bikes were in poor operating condition. 3) Two of the three coaches were rude. Karl was not rude, he has a lot to offer. Classroom time: Prior to the class we got an email link with background materials; we were to review them prior to class. I read the Rider Handbook cover to cover. During class time Friday and Saturday afternoon we read the same Handbook. The instructor assigned groups of questions to each table and we read the book to each other and to the class. This is great if you have trouble reading and writing, but it was really just to fill the time. And the movies: several movies that lasted several minutes each. The verbal instruction: Covered in a few minutes. If you subtract the fill-time reading the handbook to each other, the movies and verbal instruction could have been covered in one hour total. The written test was Saturday afternoon; I got 48, which is 96% correct. My bike didn't operate properly; (unstable, out-of-control idle) At first "W" tried to adjust it, then gave up and decided that "nothing was wrong with it". And then "W" told the whole class that nothing was wrong- in other words, I was stupid. Rude coaches: I told coach W that I was having trouble hearing his instructions (over the unstable, out-of-control idle). He told me "well, we don't hear as well as we get older" Initially Coach W told us that he isn't rude, he just has a gruff sound to his voice. Well actually, he really is rude. Coach G is very nice, charismatic and knows his bikes. But I really hated the way he was making fun of another student who was using the restroom a lot. Coach G held up the class and said "did you have too many hot wings last night" Hot wings. I would expect that kind of potty humor in high school. Sunday morning I arrived, heard that the class was full which means that I would be stuck with the same cr@ppy bike. There was a young woman that showed up, probably on the standby list, she wanted to complete the Day 2 course. They told her that the class was full. From reading other reviews I knew that once you get on the standby list you are scre*ed. She was all dressed up in her riding outfit, ready to ride. I gave her my spot; it was worth every bit of my $250 to see her smile. She got to ride. And I didn't have to ride that Cr@ppy bike for another day. Summary: These guys get a lot of good reviews because they allow you to cheat the DMV test. You pay them; they pass you- you tell your friends. It sounds like a conflict of interest to me. I went to the DMV and got my learners permit. I passed the road test at the DMV on a motorcycle, not a scooter. I now have a class C with M1 license. BTW, I'm 54 my hearing is excellent, I've been working on cars all my life and now-proud owner of a vintage Honda bike! 11/1/15 I purchased my Honda Nighthawk 750 over a year ago. Do you know what? THIS SCHOOL IS A SCAM…read more Take warning. This is an unlicensed truck driving school. The owner, Normand Pineault, is currently being sued for fraud, breach of contract, and sexual misconduct. Here is what you can expect in return for your $3,800 enrollment fee: INADEQUATE TRAINING Federal regulations require truck driving schools to teach you certain skills like how to drive on the freeway, how to couple and uncouple the truck from the trailer, and how to dock the truck in different Positions. This school teaches none of that. They spent a few hours teaching me how to back up the truck straight and they had me drive circles in the parking lot of Westminster mall. State regulations require all commercial license applicants to complete at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training before you can take your DMV driving test. The owner scheduled me for three 5-hour lessons, but my instructor typically showed up an hour late and left an hour early. He did not let me drive on the freeway because the vehicle is only covered by the insurance policy when the owner is driving. After 3 days, the owner told me that I had received all the training hours I paid for because he includes the instructor's driving time. He will submit false certifications signed under penalty of perjury to the DMV so that you can take your exam without being properly trained. BEFORE you start your first day of training, you will be required to sign the form stating that you've received 15 hours of training that you will never get. If you fail the test, he will offer additional training for $1,000 per day. UNQUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS Federal regulations require behind-the-wheel training instructors to have 2 years experience driving a commercial vehicle. My instructor was hired only 2 weeks after receiving his license. It was very obvious that he did not have any training or experience because he couldn't answer my questions and he routinely put himself in danger by doing things like standing in front of the truck while I was driving. The DMV form that lists your training hours had the owner's name pre-printed in the space for the instructor's name. The name of the actual instructor was not listed. BUSTED EQUIPMENT The school promised me that I would use the same truck for my training and testing, but on the day of my DMV test, they swapped the trucks and I had to take the test on an unfamiliar truck with mechanical problems. When we began the exam, the truck would not even start, and I had to call the owner to do his special trick with jiggling the keys in certain way so the truck will start. The mirrors are improperly mounted and one of them was missing, so I was not able to see where I was going when backing up the truck for part of the examination. The truck I was given for the exam also had a busted transmission, and the gears would grind whenever you try to shift. You will lose points on the exam each time this happens. I have been driving cars with manual transmissions for more than 25 years. I know how to shift. The truck I was given for the test also had some extra pieces of metal sticking off the back of the trailer, and the examiner failed me because these were sticking out beyond the test boundaries. NO TRAINING FACILITIES There is no actual training facility for the school. The business address that is listed is actually the owner's home address in a gated community in Irvine. You can't even drive a truck on those narrow streets. Instead, you will meet your instructor in the parking lot of a storage facility in Irvine where the trucks are kept. There is no room to drive there, but you will practice backing up the truck in the small parking area between customer storage units, so you will need to watch out for people loading and unloading their Ikea furniture. The owner does not have permission to operate and remember that you are not covered by his insurance policy, so try not to run anybody over, because you will be held liable. For additional training, I was driven to Westminster mall each morning (30 minute drive. You will ride in the passenger sear and you can send text messages to your friends while your instructor texts with the owner). Then you will get to practice backing up in the parking lot behind the Best Buy. Delivery vehicles, security guards, and mall patrons will drive through the alley during this time, and you will need to stop to let them pass. Federal regulations require the school to provide a private range to practice your maneuvers uninterrupted. Oops! You wont get that. Try not to run over the Korean man who jogs through the parking lot every morning. Remember, you are uninsured. The parking lot is nothing like the DMV test area, so this will not prepare you at all for your test. Normally we would test with 2 orange cones, but sometimes the instructor will forget to take the cones out of the other truck, so you will practice with only 1 orange cone. Sometimes we used orange hockey pucks instead.
