I LOVE THIS PLACE. When I broke a few ribs months ago, the first thing I thought was--crap, I won't be able to take classes at ODC for a whiles. This space is absolutely beautiful, and the classes are filled with serious amateur dancers. This means that the energy in class is focused but not competitive so you don't feel like a nerd for nerding up the dance floor with questions like, "are you looking for weight in the turn, or is it a light whipping motion?" I've taken Ballet, Modern, and Rhythm and Motion and all classes have just been top-notch. The class they hold at The Women's Building is great for non-dancers too. The students in the class make it super fun, and are very forgiving if you accidentally slap someone in the face because you just keep going left after the kick-ball-change when you are supposed to go right. Had a blast taking Angelica's beginning hip hop class! The dance, music, teaching technique and her energy was great. I haven't danced in 8 years so I was really glad to have learned from someone who is an awesome instructor. The only thing I was bothered by was the check-in desk staff. The customer service was lacking. I would think that they would be more welcoming once you walk in as they are students' first interaction and impression of the studio. It just made me feel intimidated as it was my first time at ODC. Nonetheless, Angelica's class helped in forgetting the bad vibes I was getting from the check-in staff. read more

This is THE ultimate dance studio with the large windows, plenty of light, and beautiful wood suspension floors (you will appreciate this in later years). This is key, as this not only attracts dancers, but more importantly, great dance instructors! Elvia Marta and Bayan Jamay, who both teach Modern Jazz Blues, have been teaching for many years. I remember her when they taught at Everybody's Dance Studio in Oakland, which is now Citicentre Dance Studio, where Roger Dillahunty also took classes and is now teaching Fusion Rhythms here. Elvia's sister Cecilia taught at SFDC, had her own dance co. and is in NYC training dancers w/Cirque du Soleil, Alvin Ailey, and for many Broadway shows. Ann Barrett, who teaches Show Jazz, taught at Dancer's Synectics on Monterey Blvd, which is now DSG Studios. She will prepare those that want to go on to auditions. Gabriel Romero who teaches Salsa 'on the 2', is considered to be one of the best Salsa dancers in the country, and has his own performing group 'Mambo Romero Dance Company'. You can tell that he is versed in all disciplines of dance, which is an advantage, because you won't pick up any bad habits. Beginning Hip Hop is a great class that has a thorough warm-up (very important to avoid injuries). You may get the occasional Howlie that will ask, "How do I put the 'Funk' into it?" Amazing classes for every body. I have been dancing with Rhythm & Motion for years and it has been my exercise, entertainment, and therapy. The teachers here are top-notch, and there are classes from everyone from beginners to serious dancers, with a lot of folkloric and ethnic dance classes as well as modern, contemporary, hip-hop, and workout classes. My favorite class is Latin Dance Grooves, taught by Elizabeth Soberanes, who manages to be welcoming to beginners and still challenge her regulars. Her choreography is great, as is her energy and smile. Fun class with salsa, mambo, African dance forms. I also love Gabriel Romero's salsa classes. He and his partner Victoria are amazing dancers, "on 2," with ballroom style mixed with a lot of Cuban soul. The beginning class is great for beginners, but the intermediate class is a bit of a quantum leap from there, with very experienced dancers, so don't try it first. They also host a dance night at El Valenciano so you can try your moves on the floor. The salsa rueda classes are fun, but can get confusing when three classes are taught at the same time in the same room--very hard to hear. Their Sunday salsa workout and rueda classes work better for me, but it's a great rueda community if that's your jam. The signature Rhythm and Motion Fusions is energetic, a great workout, with excellent choreography, and always a pick-me-up. Blanche Brown is a treasure, still teaching Afro-Haitian dance at 80, what a gift to the dance world. Samba! Cuban! Ballet! Anything your dancing heart desires. read more

My friends and I checked this place's hip hop and modern dance class recently. I liked my hip hop class; the studio was big and filled with people ranging from great dancers to not so great dancers. People were enthusiastic and the instructor patient. My two friends, both trained dancers, took modern and gave me good reviews. This place offers tons of classes. After a 10 year hiatus, I finally decided to stop lusting after my good old days and living vicariously through SYTYCD on youtube, and get back into class. I took two consecutive classes on Wednesday: Modern Rhythms (with Jessica) and Advanced/Beginning Contemporary (with Todd). Modern Rhythms was interesting and fun at times, but I had a hard time getting over the fact the class was a constantly moving series of combinations that everyone else already seemed to know. Jessica seemed nice, but the music was really loud, so I could not really hear the verbal instruction she was offering. Only a couple of short sections were broken down, but the class was so big (around 30?) and the class fast-paced that I don't think I digested much. The big room it is in is so fucking wonderful - I'd like to take more technique oriented class in it. It was good for a one hour heart-rate pulser, but not good if you are interested in improving your lines. Granted - I'm not strong at picking up combinations quickly - this is in fact my weakest area of dance training. (Embarassing, in any class I am in.) But I couldn't help but think that everyone in the room was "marking it" out of uncertainty, rather than dancing full out. Challenging - but in the wrong way (for me). The second class with Todd, was an ODC class rather than Rhythm and Motion. This resonated a lot more with me and what I personally was looking for. The warm ups were physically challenging, but not that intricate - so I wasn't overly focused on 'what am I supposed to be doing', and more focused on actually doing it. Going across the floor was at the end, after a mini-combination, so that kind of threw me off. But what I was seeking in an Advanced/Beginning Contemporary class was delivered and I was happy. Todd was warm, friendly, funny and talked a lot about the shapes we were aiming for, even breaking down some of the vocabulary. The room (on the right side) was clean, well-lit, and a nice size for our 10-12 person class. I would definitely go back for Todd's class and look forward to other ODC classes. I knew that Rhythm and Motion was 'untraditional' going in - but it ended up being a little TOO untraditional for me. read more

I really like ODC! The staff is super friendly, the facility is clean, and the instructors (Tuesday's beg. salsa class) were very nice! Keep in mind that I've only been here once, but the experience gave me a feeling of wanting to go back! It's so nice to have a dance program in the city where you don't feel intimidated. I lived in San Francisco for 3 years and ODC was my home away from home. The studio itself is beautiful, spacious and very well maintained. I enjoyed each class I tried, but I became addicted to Micaya's hip hop classes. I went every Saturday and Thursday, and I don't have enough words to describe how much I adore her. She's an incredible teacher and makes everyone feel comfortable - from absolute beginner to seasoned dancer. She does an amazing job at breaking down the movement into the fundamentals and explaining how to give it that little extra flavor. But above all -- her class is just plain fun. Her assistants are also really nice and helpful. The choreography is a blast to perform and by the end of class you'll be drenched in sweat in the best possible way. This is the most fun you'll ever have working out. If I could fly back just to take her class, I would. Sigh... read more

I must admit that I have not been to Rhythm and Motion since it relocated and paired up with ODC. However, I do know that most of the teachers remain the same...and it's the teachers who make Rhythm and Motion so great. The routines are a bit challenging at first, but if you stick with it, you'll have it in no time. I always loved Nancy's, Essential Rhythms class which caters to the beginner. Whether you have a dance background or not, the routines are fun and complex enough to capture anyone's attention. read more

This is a great place if you are looking to get a good workout or try something new. I am currently taking the Modern Rhythms class and I love it. The instructors are great. They are encouraging and friendly. They make it easy for someone without much experience or skill to have a good time and enjoy themselves. The space is great; it is exactly how a dance studio should look and feel. The classes are affordable and there is variety to choose from for all levels of experience. My sole complaint is the desk staff doesn't do ODC any favors. They look bored and are not very friendly. They come across as standoffish. For such a welcoming place, these women are the exact opposite. read more

ODC is my home for dance classes in San Francisco. They have an incredible schedule with variety and great instructors! You can drop-in or buy a class card and the prices are extremely reasonable considering the value and their reputation. Sometimes the front desk people seem to be having a bad day, but don't let that deter you! Once you get inside, it's a welcoming environment no matter what your skill level is. I haven't seen the classes completely fill up so dropping in is no problem. You can even request to observe a class first if you're nervous about keeping up. It's comparable to Lou Conte/Hubbard Street in Chicago if you've taken classes there. I've taken contemporary, ballet, and hip-hop at ODC and can't wait to try more! read more

I am a couch potato, but I've always been curious about how dancing would be like. Having never danced in public before and spending my free time as a homebody, I decided it was finally time to check out dance classes at ODC Rhythm and Motion. Even for a complete uncoordinated novice like myself, I found that the atmosphere was very welcoming. The staff at the front desk are great resources to ask about different types of dance classes offered. You can also watch a class if you want to check it out before. Their new student promotion is a good way to try out the classes. I started off with the Beginning Hip Hop class and was a little intimidated when I first got there and compared myself to the others dressed in their cute workout outfits. However, I ended up having a fun time even though I was totally uncoordinated and two steps behind other people. Quickly get over the fact I was the worst in the class. Since my first class, I've also tried their Fusion Rhythms and Modern Rhythm classes--which are their dance workout classes. These dance workout classes combine all sorts of musical and dance styles and I've found them to be more physically demanding than the hip-hop class. I'm out of shape, so I have a hard time keeping up, but it doesn't matter. One can always adjust as needed to pace oneself. The instructors I've had so far have all been very down to earth--no attitude or snobbiness. There's a sense of exuberance and celebration in the classes. As a beginner, I appreciated that I didn't have to worry that someone was going to yell at me for my mistakes. I can go there to have fun and get some exercise on the side. It's also nice to see these instructors dance in class. Really helps one to appreciate the beauty of dance. read more

Not just a dance class - incredible movement and attitude class. Stopped in at the recommendation of an acquaintance who is a pilates instructor/dancer. Expected it to be very good. But did not expect a cohesive, flowing, well-choreographed, but also impromptu, highly energetic, journey through at least 5 musical/dance styles - gay pride parade choreo, funk, salsa, New Orleans parade, Jewish wedding dance, and probably some other styles I didn't perfectly recognize. I've been taking Iddy Thompsons EFR Rythm and Motion class, super fun! Aaaand...it's a great work out! I do an hour of yoga at a different studio then I head over to ODC and take Iddy's class. She's really sweet and upbeat and is easy to learn from. This was my first time taking a group choreography class. I brought a friend with me and now she's hooked too. It's our crack =). read more

This place is my home away from home. I mostly go to Emma's classes. I lover her energy, she's so much fun to dance with. Other instructor's I've had have also been wonderful. It's not in the best part of town, but the facility is like a dance sanctuary. People that attend classes regularly are very friendly, which makes the classes a perfect atmosphere to learn and have fun. Classes can be pricey, but the more you purchase, the better the deal, and unlike a smelly gym, you'll want to keep coming back. I hate conventional exercising. I get bored. The R&M class is an awesome alternative if you dread the monotony of gym routines. They offer opportunities to rehearse for flash mobs, carnival, and other fun community oriented events around the city. I've never left a workout not smiling. read more

This school is extremely nice and artsy. I've only tried one adult class, I didn't realize until class started that it was "basic hip-hop" I didn't break a sweat. However, I look forward to trying out a few more classes. I wished they had a jazz class without the hip-hop technique. I also wished they offered more classes for adults. I tried Modern and Modern Rhythms here. I didn't realize that the Rhythm & Motion classes were basically aerobics. If you're a girl interested in dance aerobics, this could be for you. The modern class I took was okay but I didn't realized that they mixed kids and adults in the same class. Also while the main studios look new, some are out-of-the-way (Fisher) and not that new. I do recommend modern with Bliss though; its too bad she just teaches intermediate/advanced. Also, I was hoping that SF dance was more gender balanced, but so far no luck... read more

I have had wonderful experiences at this school. It's a great place for beginners and for old timers trying to loosen up the bones. The beginning ballet workshop will gently whip your sedentary office job butt into shape while teaching you all the fundamentals of strength and alignment necessary for strong and emotive movement. read more

I have been dancing here for more than 5 years--mostly Afro Brazilian and West African-- but I have also taken their Hip Hop, Afro Cuban, Afro Brazilian Modern and Rhythm and Motion classes. All superb. They have some of the best teachers and the space is pretty awesome. The price, thankfully, hasn't risen much-- $14 per class! Not bad! It's a space for all level of dancers and all ages. If you keep coming, you'll see the sames faces and it becomes a little like an extended family. Definitely worth checking out! read more

I totally learned how to dance here, though not well. Ultimately, that's MY fault, not theirs. Teaching a klutz like me to dance is a near impossibility. The stunning instructors are in incredible shape, and it was a blast to go have a drink afterwards with fellow students. The samba is really hard, so I'd recommend signing up for the preliminary class in tango to ease into it. Not that pricey. read more

It took me a while to get turned on to ODC, I was schlepin through the t-loin to SF Dance Center, but I have really been enjoying the Fusion/Modern Rhythms classes. I work up a pony-tail-sticks-to-your-neck sweat and enjoy being able to dance without worrying about my tendus and turnout. read more
