Please do not repeat the mistakes I made when I lost my middle school years here. I am a former student of Fairhaven School (2016-2023). In my time I found that the school suffered from quite a few issues. I do not recommend it for kids with ADHD, Autism, or learning disabilities, as it is fairly sparse in any structured or dedicated methods to help people with those issues find out how to function. My primary issue in this school was liability and safety. I had two friends and classmates who were sexually harassed and assaulted. One was a transmasc man assaulted by a cisgman. In that case the school ejected the perpetrator. The other case was a cisgender man being sexually harassed by a cisgender woman. The accused was not suspended or ejected from the school. In neither case were authorities contacted by the school on the issue. In my experience, the school is fairly obsessed with money and liability. The staff is less concerned about student safety and more-so about legality. In addition, due to a student lead democratic judicial system, kids are often subject to callous judicial proceedings, with jurors often being disinterested in the process, and intentionally speeding along hearings. Furthermore, many punishments given by the judicial system were, in my opinion, outsized and often drawn on ideological lines. The school was very intolerant of certain transgressions, which is fine for a school to do, but I find is inappropriate, as the school advertises a fair and rounded judicial system. I also once again find that student lead judiciaries were often very lax about prosecuting sex-crimes. I have been able to flourish after transferring to my local public high school, and thanks to my time there I've been set on a college course, but I undoubtedly have holes in my knowledge and am behind where I could be. I seriously suggest looking into other options, as for the high tuition, this ecosystem is not worth it. I will admit I have felt jaded by my experience here, but without touching the culture of the school, I simply think the model doesn't work. Kids should have freedom, but I find that if young kids aren't forced to learn, they typically will not build skills that will be helpful later. It isn't fair to have a 6 year old decide their future all the way out to college, because all they want is to have as much fun as possible at that age.

We didn't need "accomodations" in their environment, we needed a completely different environment.

All these years later, Lanham has maintained their reputation of not only educating young minds but also discipling young souls.

Even high school, I was in eighth grade, but felt like I learned more than the ninth graders when I was in 7th grade. Because even their work looked very ez. 4. Clubs: they don't have that much to offer for again, academic kids 5. Rules: they have stupid rules like not having your phone in your pocket. Like that just wild. Or other rules like can't wear a RIVERDALE jacket in school. It ruins the point of having it. 6.lunch: now the lunch is good, but fast food everyday is not good, especially for a mostly sports school. I love how there is an emphasis on the LORD and I love that they have chapel every week. They have the opportunity to go to church activities and my teens get to be involved in sharing the Gospel with the community and being involved in Youth Group. The Fine Arts program is growing which gives the children more of an outlet to find their talents. The administration truly wants what has best for the students. We have moved many times over the years and this is our fifth Christian school and mine/and my children's favorite one.

All summer classes are held at Wee Lad, and our girls had wonderful experiences the past two summers. The school has a huge, fenced backyard playground, and the classes make excellent use of it, weather permitting. My older daughter now attends the pre-K during the regular school year, and has continued to take huge strides in early learning. The teachers keep the lessons fun. The staff and team work with families to offer schedules that seem to be more flexible than the other schools that I considered before choosing Wee Lad. The school has been excellent to work with in regards to food allergies and maintaining the safety of my child.

One of the biggest problems that I had was with the kids who went there. A lot of them acted like…read morelittle children (in the same manner a lower schooler would act) and were extremely immature and annoying. I remember the teacher telling students to walk down a hallway without acting out, which we had to redo. At lunch period during my senior year, they were running around & were completely out of control. When we read Shakespeare, some of the kids in my class would read it in a Jamaican accent & they would start laughing. Almost everybody would constantly laugh at things that were said & certain words in Hamlet which weren't funny. I don't think it was fair that I had to be in the same classroom as the rest of them. One of the most embarrassing things to deal with was at my time at KTHS was going to field trips. Some people would laugh at us because of the way some people acted. They also seemed to have never grown up. A lot of them liked to talk about things that I stopped being interested in when I was 11 or 12. When I was waiting at the bus stop, my classmates would throw Cheetos & sticks on the road & laugh when somebody ran over it. And don't get me started on the outbursts during class. I gave specific examples of what I had to deal with, but it was all day, every day, a lot all the time. For most of my day I had to deal with either somebody acting out, being disrespectful & rude, or just being annoying. The staff were almost as bad because they were unable to properly discipline students. I don't remember kids being kicked out of class, which should have happened all the time. Sometimes support staff came into our classroom to support other students & would sit there & stare at me. They & other teaching assistants would go around the classroom & look over my shoulder at what I was working on & make sure I was doing it correctly, as if I was too stupid to do work by myself & was a little. My math teacher would yell & get angry for getting a question wrong, for not understanding something, or for other things without good cause. Everybody got very little out of math classes due to the way we were taught. During classes, I was pulled out to speak with a therapist even though I didn't want to. One of them came up to me out of the blue and angrily told me that it was my fault for my social situation because I didn't interact with the students enough. I was also taken out of the class with another student to watch tv shows to comment on what was going on as if I was too stupid to understand what was happening and one semester, most the class was taken out for speech class. During my last year, I was taken out of lunch once a week to participate in an awkward group therapy session, which was almost as bad as dealing with the students at lunch. The academics were a complete joke. A lot of the work was the same type of work that I did when I was in middle & lower school & was completely dumbed down. For instance, in my health class, the teacher gave us a paper with a human body & 4 major organs and our assignment was to label the major organs. A couple of years before when I was at a different school, I had a health teacher who taught us at a high school level, & it was extremely frustrating to go from a high school level of being taught at a lower school level. In English class we barely wrote anything and in my government class, everything was too simplified. For my history exam & quizzes there were questions such as "find California on the map" and "who made the I had a dream speech". I did not do any studying for exams. In some instances, I received high grades without trying. I remember getting a 99 percent on one of my history exams. The only exception was my math exam, which isn't surprising since I wasn't properly taught math & felt uncomfortable all of class. BTW, I really enjoyed taking Geometry & Algebra II while my younger brother (who was in middle school at the same time) was doing the exact same thing as I was. The only class that I felt was somewhat at my grade level was chemistry. I remember getting a B on my exam without studying but I don't think I received a decent chemistry education. I studied so little at KTHS that I felt guilty I passed without doing any work. I had to take a math test to graduate high school and while I was taking it, I was angry & stressed out about what was going on around me & was unable to focus and think properly. I ended up failing & had to retake the test. Thanks to KTHS, I was robbed of a high school education & a high school experience. I do not believe that I deserved to have graduated from high school because I didn't do the proper work. When I look back & think about my time at KTHS, I regret that I didn't quit high school. I now know that quitting high school would have been a better route for me, because there was no point in sitting there & not learning anything while dealing with annoying students & staff.

I love this place for being my chrysalis at a time when D.C. was the murder capital of the world and my life and my academic advancement felt so precarious. Carroll saved me by providing loving guidance in my journey to walk with God and academically over preparing me for college and law school. Generations of my family have graced the halls at great financial sacrifice for our working class parents and grandparents. I found God and myself at Carroll. I made lifelong friends and fantastic memories that lift me up when I feel down. I still get goosebumps when I walk onto that football field just like I did when I strapped up that gold helmet in high school. I owe Carroll much more than I could ever hope to repay. Carroll students reflect the light of Jesus Christ in all of their undertakings. Founded in 1951, Carroll was one of the first racially integrated schools in D.C. to defy the de facto racial segregation that was the law of the land in those pre Brown v. Board days in America. Today the school has a special calling to engage its students on issues of social justice, economic justice, racial equality, gender equality, and religious freedom. Make no mistake about it, Carroll is a college preparatory high school where academic rigor, love for man and womankind, and love of God through good works is at the center of the community.
