Odessa Grocery Shop has been a special part of my life for more than 30 years. I've been shopping here for decades, and it's one of those wonderful neighborhood places that has always felt familiar and welcoming. The produce is consistently fresh, and I love the incredible variety of international foods and specialty items they carry. There is always something interesting to discover, along with so many of the products I've come to know and love over the years. What makes Odessa especially special, though, is the people. The staff is always friendly, kind, and genuinely helpful. After more than 30 years of shopping here, I can truly say that this is much more than just a grocery store to me -- it's a treasured part of the neighborhood and a place I'm always happy to come back to. Wow how have I never seen this place out of the million times I've driven past? Talk about a hidden gem in plain sight. It looks unassuming from the outside but inside it was jam packed with all sorts of international but mostly Russian goodies. I must be the last to know about this place because for one apparently it's been around for years and for two they had a healthy line at the counter to check out. Hot to cold food, fresh to dried and everything in between. I picked up some teas, herbs and dried fruit and nuts. I was running short on time but I'll definitely be back! read more

This is a great shop to find Eastern European food and culture. The folks behind the counter are really pleasant. The store is jam packed with almost everything you can imagine from tinned delicacies to frozen comfort favorites. I like the fact that I can find things I enjoyed in my childhood neighborhood out east. I will travel here just to get some of my favorite foods. This is a tightly packed place, so take your time to browse through the stacks of stuff you can't find anywhere else. Do try things you've never had before. I had a very unpleasant experience here and felt that the cashiers were not transparent about the charges. The whole transaction left me feeling misled and uncomfortable. I would strongly recommend checking your receipt and charges carefully before paying. read more

Absolutely love this place! If you are looking for authentic Russian/Ukrainian food, this is the spot. The deli is always packed with delicious options. The service here really stands out. Even though it was almost closing time, Marina the manager was incredibly kind--she helped me open the fridge and even placed the 'Olivye' salad in my basket since my hands were full. Sveta at the register was also amazing; she went out of her way to look through the selection behind the glass to find me the absolute freshest red caviar and also gave me a gift - some Russian dark chocolate for free! Also, I found nuts in shell here - amazing!!! Usually nuts are always sold without shell. The store is clean, high quality, and the staff truly goes above and beyond. Highly recommended! read more

WeHo has many Russian/Ukrainian grocery stores. Odessa, as far as I know, is the most iconic one. It is a small brick and motor, but packed with full of pastries, deli/prepared food items, candy bars and even household items. You can find candy bars and deli foods sold in small amounts, so that you can explore unfamiliar items to find your favorite. I always love getting chocolates, zefir (marshmallow), vareniki (dumplings), and kasha (buckwheat). The store is always friendly as well and gives me a nostalgic feeling to the old days that I shop at a local bodega. read more

The store is small but it has lot of choices. As an Ukrainian, I appreciated the variety. Recently migrated from San Francisco, I was hoping for same quality eg black bread, sverniki, poppy roll, napoleon cake. Quality in San Francisco Russian stores is much better so that's a big minus read more

This used to be a much better store, years ago. But it seems, "Customer Service" has gone to the dogs. Mediocre service (at best!)... clerks with unfriendly demeanor. In all honesty, though: the product variety is great! (that's one positive thing in the store; hence I'm giving 2 stars, not 1). But otherwise... The other day I needed to buy rye bread. But noticed that most breads (from Lithuania, etc.) did not have either a $ price, nor (!) an Expiration Date. (Seriously ?!) This reminds of the former Soviet Union. When asked a saleswoman about the lack of $ price, she got defensive, and did not care about the situation. The owner Alex - I hope you read this message. And, it is in your best interest, to take steps to make sure your products have a $ Price-tag and Expiration Date. Frankly, I haven't seen any other store that would be missing both the $ "Price" and "Expiration Date" tags. P.S. Needless to say, I walked out... -- and purchased the bread elsewhere. Thank you. Going to this place is like being teleported to an alternate, Russian-speaking dimension. There's one woman behind the counter who speaks a little English and that's it. You will definitely find things here you won't find at Whole Foods. The smoked fish was...interesting. Very gamey, and what most Americans might consider past the sell date. The cold smoked sturgeon is the only thing I'd buy again. But what the heck, give it a try, it's a cultural experience, and maybe you'll like it. read more

A number of years ago the foodie magazine SAVEUR had this store on its a best list. It's specialty being smoked fish. Lox , sturgeon and whitefish. The smoked is infact amazing. The employees speak little to no English. But hey, you can point and figure it out. They are not polite or even try to assist you , but for us that part of the charm. The best pelmeni and chocolate for sure! I also love getting hematogen (candy) there. Great location and they have freshly baked pastries there too! I do not eat meat anymore, so I can't get pelmeni, but I like that they have non-meat options such as potatoes. read more

In this store you need to know what to get. I wouldn't get things that are cooked by them, but fresh produce there is great. Especially recommend their meats. Varoynaya Kolbasa, Moscovskaya Kolbasa, (forgot in Eng.) I also often get cottage cheese, bread, mayo and candy. Those never disappoint. Don't forget, you can ask them to cut a thin slice for you to try the meats before you buy. Coming on here just bc of people's negative comments regarding Odessa's cooked food, like salads and pastries...Being of the few Russian stores in LA I wouldn't cross it out just because of that. read more

Beware of Spoiled and Expired pre-made food like soups, salad Olivier and Shuba located in the fridge! Buy at your own risk! All the pre-made food doesn't have an expiration date on it nor the date of preparation so you can get Poisoned easily. When I tried to reach out to the store manager and owner Bilana - never received a phone call back or apologies about food being NOT fresh. I had to throw away over $20 worth of food over a week ago, obviously I don't want to eat spoiled food! They also don't cover with plastic pre-made food that sits outside behind the register like fish, meat balls, pirogies etc it's Unsanitary! Oh and they don't wear gloves either when grabbing that food for you yukkk Been a customer for many years but recently this place is just gone so bad in quality and service! read more

Being half Russian myself, I was so excited to find a russian deli on my trip to West Hollywood. I was so startled by how mean the store workers are and how of an unwelcoming environment this place can be. We purchased some beef pelmini and dadu (ice cream) paying up front. The woman working just kept giving us dirty looks and dryly handed over our change on the counter (despite my fiancé holding out his hand politely). I love taking pictures in order to spread awareness of such hidden gems...but got scolded like a child by the women working screaming for me to stop taking pictures. I don't mind following orders, but no need to scream. Overall, unless you are fluent in Russian or a blood relative of the cranky ladies up front...find another Russian store. Positives first. It's big with a big assortment of everything edible and Russian. Unfortunately my visit there today will be my last because I ended up getting some kolbasa (salami) past the expiration date. Pretty sure the owner was aware of the oldness of the product because he was trying to sell more of it - and we ended up buying more. But upon coming home and tasting it I immediately spit it out. It was bad and old and tasted rotten. I don't think I will go and return it because due to the customer service problem there I don't think they'll take it back or exchange it. I guess it's $10 or so down the drain. :/ I agree with some of the previous reviewers saying they upcharge you somehow. Ended up paying like twice the amount I normally spend at a Russian store. I'll stick to shalom or babooshkas stores in the future. Oh and gl with parking around there. read more

I want, and need: - a 64 ounce jar of Ukrainian dill pickles - a16 ounce tin of Russian assorted chocolates with Czar Nicholas II on the lid - a $10 phone card that can be used to call Moscow at .6cents a minute - a CD of a Russian riot-girl band I've never heard of, but want to hear, now - several pounds of make-a-mix Russian candy, in a cellophane bag - a 12 ounce tin of Del Monte peaches, which are American, but become very Russian when purchased from the Russian grocery - a copy of the latest Komsomolskaya Pravda so I'm up to date on the dirt - 2 slices of Russian chocolate cake, one for now, the other also for now - as much cabbage piroshki as the store has - smoked caviar that I will never buy (but want to look at) - an extremely-Russian-sounding person to place my many purchases in a "Thank You, Come Again" bag, and tell me to hurry because "Dat traffic cop outzide iz going to give yoo ah tikett." Spasiba, Odessa. You meet (and surpass) all my wants and needs in a corner store. And, since my car got towed (unrelated incident, not your fault, Odessa dear) I now want and need you to be near my place, too, so I can walk to your door. You pass again, gorgeous. read more

This store is in my blacklist now. Today I walked in with my Russian girlfriend who happens to be black. As soon as we walked in the cashier with a red hair said in Russian " !" ("we don't need any n_i_g_g_e_r_s here!"). She said it in a loud voice, so we all can hear that. My friend told in Russian that she speaks the language and understood what she was saying. The cashier didn't apologize but instead denied that she was talking about her. It's a shame that this kind of mentality can exist nowadays. read more

Another Russian Store in West Hollywood, but one of the better ones. They have a nice deli section, fresh produce, baked goods, a lot of canned goods, frozen food, and nuts to name a some of their items. I do wish that more of the items were priced as many are not. This store is not cheap but I guess you pay for the quality and selection. read more
